In a closeup on the stream thought I saw some wintergreen,would improve the flavor of your water.
My wife and I own an outdoor adventure company and we watch a lot of these kinds of videos just to see what people are doing (and because it's better for your mental health than watching t.v. or news, etc!). We both agree with your "rant" on the side of the cliff -- you are by far the most professional and thorough instructor out there. Great videos, great instructional techniques and a lot of useful tips, tricks and techniques anyone can use in almost any situation. Well done, Sir.
I rather have a longer video than short one's. Everything he or you do is educational. If people just stop and thinks about what he builds might save your life one day.

I like the fact you show what can be done with a bare bones cheap AF “kit”. As far as watch time goes, you are one of a few people I don’t skip through the video so 10,20 or 30 minutes I watch it all.

@@maryistulsafox I kind of agree… I like inexpensive! But it needs to be dependable! I actually think the cold steel GI Tanto is great bang for the buck. It’s also very nearly scandy (sp?) grind. Needs a bit of tuning. Take the scales off& it’s easily lashed in different configurations for different tools. I also have many knives for all my pockets. I also feel a cheap knife has a place… to use in that job you would damage the good knife… the sacrificial knife…
I personally like the longer videos but I watch all your videos no matter how long. Like a bunch of the other comments you teach skills that probably 95% of the population doesn’t know how to do. I enjoy it all. Keep it up your videos are awesome

I watch it all.... 20 minute or 30 minute... 45 minute...(as long as the content is educational - which it is so far) I would watch it all
30 minutes is the best length. I always back up and rewatch the knots and shelter log arranging. No matter how many times I watch, I always go back and rewatch the rope and cordage knots.
That lighter trick, was very handy and potentially lifesaving.
I wouldn't stress too much about people skipping through your videos. There's a lot if people who are impatient or can't relax. As a new viewer to your channel and this being my first video, I didn't skip at all. Great content keep it up
I think your videos are awesome whether it be 20 or 30 minutes. Many people are more interested in living in fear rather than being free and enjoying the outdoors. Keep on keeping on brother.

For me the longer videos are better because I'm not only watching for info, I'm going on a little virtual campout to relax. I fully enjoy the methodical nature of your content.

Me and my son went on a overnight outdoor stay this weekend. We only took what we could carry to site in one trip. He is about to turn 18. It was one of the hardest work we have done together and had the best time doing it. We Love your videos. There are millions of trash videos on utube. It's a rare video that actually helps family bond and teaches thing that can actually save your life. With skills that everyone should know. Keep your video the way you like to make them. No fluff, funny, and very informative. Thanks for all your hard work and service.

The only thing I would do different, if I had to go cheap on a knife, is buying a fixed blade paring knife. A very cheap folding knife is likely to just fall to pieces. I love these challenges. Gets me thinking. Thanks for posting!
If people are skipping through your videos they are idiots. You do great videos with excellent quality shots and info. I am an experienced camper but I learn something new every time. Folks watch to the end.

The shower curtain just absolutely blew my mind. How has that never crossed my mind. It’s a good size. You know it’s going to be waterproof. It has grommets. Incredible.
Honest opinion as a new sub & someone serious about wanting to learn your vids are perfect in every way. The info is vital, the timing of illustration is perfect (I like to rewind n watch to make sure I'm seeing exactly what you're showing). People skipping are looking for fluff. You cant cater to everyone. As your new student, i dont mind more detail n slower illustrations even!!

The length of the video I think is dependent on what you're doing. A 20 minute is great for a minimal gear episode but your more involved stuff needs longer time. The critical thing is keeping it interesting and in that you never fail. Keep it up.👍👍
Good point, for the more involved builds longer videos and/or multiple episodes is probably necessary to get in all the details.
Don't limit yourself to a time limit make the videos as long as you feel they should be,
The information you provide is great and has helped me a lot in understanding basic survival I honestly can't understand how anyone could be putting a dislike on your videos to be honest.
It is apparent they have not put time off the land. I grew up in the far north in Wisconsin.
Back in the woods you have to learn to survive.
In Grand Forks AFB ND they would drop someone off in the woods to see if they could make it. A black friend of mine grim Alabama
got sent out. Had to rescue him. Almost died.
I can build a fire on very wet ground. But you have to be ready if that time comes.
lol the fact that you admitted it sucked immediately, first thing in morning, is the kinda honesty that keeps me watching your content. Oh yeah also all the stuff I've learned how to do over the last couple years of watching your content. Keep em up, damn near a million subs.
20 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. No matter how long you're video is you put out great content and always useful information, so you keep doing what works for you and I'll keep watching and learning. Thanks for sharing.
I'm personally a fan of the 30 minute videos. There is so much more that you show during those extra 10 minutes. I know it's a pain when people don't watch the entire video but a lot of us do. People will complain no matter what you do. Cut it to 10 minutes and they'll complain you aren't showing enough. Keep it the same and they'll cut to their favorite parts. Some of us actually like the teaching elements in your videos, and watch it in it's entirety.

I am utterly AMAZED that the crappy knife made it through the overnighter. I understand that it is sometimes a challenge for you to use less than ideal equipment, but WOW that was really taking a chance.

I’ll pretty much watch any length video that you care to post. I imagine the editing still takes several hours no matter the finished length of the final product. I really appreciate the effort!

Most of my kit is budget items from Walmart. That ozark trail cup nests perfectly into the Stanley cook set they sell. They also have a decent steel mess kit. One of their Hart multitools works ok after putting in the time to properly sharpen the blade. The garden center you can find a fiskars folding saw for about 10 bucks. Often you can find the exact same thing in different departments for different prices. Paracord in the outdoors department costs almost double what paracord in the hardware department goes for.
Did it work? Yes.
Was it horrible? Yes.
But did we get through it? Yes.

The way you tied the Bolen, in this video and others, was my "Aha" moment for that knot. Seen you do it that way before and was practicing and tied it that way as if I'd been doing it for months. Now I have NO problems with that one. Now to work on the Truckers' Hitch, your version.

Ran into some line called 1100 Paracord at WalMart. It's thicker than the 550 sitting next to it. Bought a hank and am testing it out as my ridgeline.

I like the 20 minute videos... I miss the 30 minute ones... but these are still awesome. I always watch them start to finish. The people slamming the fast-forward are missing the fine details, and the how-to. Do what makes YOU happy. You’re a master at your Bushcraft AND your video production... your legions will watch whatever you put up. Just my 2¢. Keep on crushing it, brother. This was a great challenge and video.
I like the simpler videos - like this. Showing survival skills vs building a mansion in the woods. Yes, nice kit helps make it more comfortable and enjoyable, but there's always less expensive alternatives. Start inexpensive, and when you can UPGRADE to the good stuff. Thanks for a great video!

I like the longer videos my self but I really like these survival videos especially the budget videos.
I like the longer videos. I find myself wanting to skip sometimes but I’m not sure why. It’s usually the parts like when ur throwing the rocks out of the crick to make a fire pit. I’d rather see more of the technical stuff, knots, wood crafting, all the crafting type stuff. The skills of the trade is what I’m watching for and I like you because u think outside the box and let us know there’s more than one way to skin a cat

@@recall5811 I honestly don’t have a good answer for you, I rarely skip, but I usually watch when I have nothing else to do, I sit down and night or during the day when nothings going on and watch ur videoes to get my relaxation on.
Plus I like to learn the knots and other skills. I’m not sure why people skip. maybe they are just quickly scanning videos for something interesting, I bet they skip multiple videos and hardly ever watch a whole video. Maybe their adhd needs something extreme in the first 2 minutes of the video LOL. Idk brotha

The reality is that most people who watch and comment on videos are living vicariously through the content creator.
Most viewers dont practise these skills themselves and are only here to watch, expecting to see the “taj mahal” every time. That, or its onto the short dudes that make mud huts with the swimming pools. Not that theres anything wrong with that

Hey Shawn, that Mountain House Chili Mac was the first meal on our first backpacking trip in '72. The first time you realize there's no stores around have way up San Jacinto mountain and your hungry, everything taste delicious, well almost. 2 years ago I made my daughter and each a survival kit in a 40 oz. plastic waterproof peanut butter jar. Everything is in it, mylar space blanket, first aid etc. It's about two pounds. Would like to see your take on the peanut butter jar kit. It sure holds a lot. It's a great waterproof container for just a first aid kit alone.
After looking at inventories for well over 100 bags I stumbled onto Canterbury's 10 C's of Survival. Now I use that as a basis for evaluation (or building) of any kit. Plus most of my kits will get some food, first aid, and hygiene/sanitation items.
That's a fun ride down to Palm Springs, so many twisty turns.
Oh, the 40oz peanut butter jar is a great container. Particularly if you wrap a little teflon tape on those threads.
Do one called “Good Trash” and go dumpster diving apocalypse style and use that “good trash” to do an apocalypse survival video. Silly and fun!
I don't skip forward, but I do pause and go back to practice with that easy peasy arbor knot.Gotta know how for my grandson!
20 min is great. Shorter is better specific instructional or informational type video. 20 min plus is more tv show, live through you stuff

I don’t think you’ve done a video that I haven’t enjoyed. Twenty minutes is fine, but make them the length you need to relate the information you want to share. I appreciate the time you spend doing the videos, I know they’re a lot of work, anyone who’s actually done what you’re doing knows it takes time beyond what you’re showing. Hold your head up and be proud of the wonderful job you’re doing, the content is enjoyable and educational.

I'm a huge fan of your videos no matter how long or short they are. They always have something useful to take from them and are entertaining too. I think some people just have shorter attention spans (think goldfish) thanks to social media so they would skip through a vine let alone something twenty minutes long. Your wet lighter solution is the smartest one I've seen on youtube. Bernoulli's principal in action!
In this time of uncertainty these are skills we all should/must learn to survive what is coming.
Great no nonsense instruction with the minimal of gear..knowing what to do and how to do it could mean the difference between life and death.
Also, I always watch your videos from beginning to end and it wouldn't matter if they were 10min to an hour and 10min.
The times are little dicey, but nothing like the USG dropping bombs and machine gunning coal miners a hundred years. Be prepared.
By far the best videos on TH-cam. I have been catching up on three years worth of postings and have been having my Scouts watch many of these. Obvious that you are an instructor, your approach to these videos is terrific. 20 mins -vs- 30 mins ... I like the 20 mins, but either has been great. Thanks for the budget bushcraft approach on these. If you have any suggestions for quality knife sharpening on a budget, that would be really appreciated. I watch for these every Sunday ... thanks again for all your hard work on these.
I self taught myself some survival techniques (Campcraft) back in the 1980’s - knowing that the brain/mind is the most important part of the equation. I was a section hiker on the Appalachian Trail. I just “found” you and I’m loving every second of your videos. At 77, my adventure days are limited to Truck Camping, but I’m still learning a lot. My “rescue and recovery” gear list is growing. YES I WATCH EVERY SECOND OF YOUR VIDEOS! And share them.

G’day, Shawn. I was unaware that you were able to detect when viewers skip along. Interesting. I, for one, don’t need to watch someone gather, process, and stack firewood. Nor as they boil water, sip a hot drink, or eat a meal. Or just walk through the woods.
However, when I’m watching and learning (or reviewing) something that I want to learn - I may well back up and rewatch some portions several times. I don’t know if that appears to be skipping over content, when it’s the opposite?
You’re a good instructor; I learn here. But, I don’t need to rewatch how to learn something that I can instruct. I’ll continue to watch and learn from you, and thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I like your 20 minute videos. The solo overnights are cool to watch. I like camping, fishing, hiking and backpacking. Your low budget approach is a good demonstration to those people who may not know that camping can be very cheap.
