  • We have 2 new lambs on the farm! These are 2 new dorper lambs that were born earlier this morning. They are part of a set of triplets but unfortunately the 3rd lamb did not survive for some reason.
    Our sheep are raised on pasture and rotated from paddock to paddock. We expected this ewe to give birth during this time frame. Another ewe unfortunately died during birth earlier in the week.
    Dorper sheep are easy to care for, require low inputs and thrive on pasture. They produce excellent meat and are a hardy animal that does not require sheering. Dorpers are known as a hair sheep.
    This is our first year raising grass fed sheep on pasture and using a rotational grazing method which is part of a wholistic farming approach. We keep the sheep in a paddock for a period of time before rotating them onto a fresh piece of ground. The sheep are moved regularly to mimic the natural mobbing, moving and mowing found in nature as part of natural ruminant behavior. We strive to be chemical, antibiotic and input free as we practice organic and beyond organic practices.
    Sheraton Park Farms practices holistic, sustainable farming and soil building using a rotational grazing model as we try to grow more grass on our farm.

    In Dorper sheep is there genotype difference of homozygous and heterozygous.
    Can all male and female have the genetics of producing twins and more lambs. What about FecB and FecX in Dorper, what precautions needed to take before purchasing male breeder. Please guide.

    Are your ewes suffering from pregnancy Toxemia? Or Thiamine deficiency? We had a ewe get sluggish and low energy...the vet recommended thiamine and multivitamin shots with selenium and iron. We upped her nutrition with Calf manna and a lamb ration. The vet said the hay from 2019 was poor and a lot of sheep producers were having problems. (We are in Kentucky)

      That’s a great question we had a pregnant toxemia ewe earlier in the season and worse than these have been. We are making sure they are getting plenty of alfalfa pellets, sweet feed, we have a lot of grass right now and I keto a molasses tub in with them. It certainly could be a more mild case than we had the first go around. What breed do y’all keep?

    Aww sorry to hear that :( I’m curious what farmers do with the dead babies and lambs? Do you dig them underground?

      We actually compost them in wood chips. Then they will go back onto the farm as fertilizer or garden soil.

    Sir, at what age (months) the female lamb can be used for first time breeding.

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually around 8-10 months. Also depends on their size. You want them at about 75% of their full grown weight. Thanks for watching

      @SheratonParkFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually at least twins. Occasionally triplets.

    Moms and moms to be, need a lot of carbohydrates and protein feed with lots of minerals and a selenium Shot if you live in areas that is deficient of selenium. And a little extra copper 2-5months of the gestation period.
    And youll not be in problems much.
    I feed brome, orchard Timothy and Alfalfa bales with supplementation of rolles oats and Barley during pregnancy, i will be adding minerals mostly cow mineral that has added copper in a couple weeks this really helps in fetus development, especially if they are multiple fetuses.
    Hopefully that helps.

    What breed are your sheep??

  • @markrossi131
    @markrossi131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Should never get close to new born lambs, the ewe spends the first few hours after birth memorising the smell of her lambs, from experience any interruption can cause the ewe to reject the lamb. As tempting as it is wait at least a day so they have fully bonded

      We have a problem of not enough large animal vets in our area and there are complicating factors around that so we do the best we can. We are very dedicated to the health and we’ll being of our animals and unfortunately animals die despite our best efforts. Thanks for watching.
