      lol I enjoyed the book well enough (thought Recursion was more interesting though) but I also enjoyed your review!
      ultimately I think a reader's enjoyment will come down to how well they're able to turn off the analytical part of their brain and just enjoy a schlocky sci-fi story.

    The part of the book where Jason was freely interacting with the plague infected version of his wife had me almost tearing my hair out. I for sure thought the twist was going to be that he ended up spreading the plague to his own world due to his stupidity and (ironically) ends up killing his own family.
    But nope. Apparently this highly infectious super virus that makes you bleeds from your eyes just didn't infect him for some reason?

    Parts of the plot you described reminded me a lot of the tv show Sliders, but worse. They had an episode where they end up on a planet with its own "super" pandemic, but I think it worked better because: the main characters didn't chose the destination, and they didn't immediately understand what was going on... so naturally they all started getting sick.
    Then; they were forced to come up with a cure before they were forced to Slide into a different universe and potentially infect & destroy that world.
    If you're not going to properly deal with the ramifications of your character visiting a world with a pandemic / plague or whatever... then just don't. Sounds like it could have just been a world where Jason's wife was suffering from a incurable illness that took that universes Jason. Just force Prime Jason to observe from the other side the glass at a hospital... and you got all the main-character-suffering ya want without any dumb decisions being made.

    I’m on episode eight of the Apple + show, and I’m impressed by the changes that have been made so far. Amanda stays in the utopian world, the pandemic is explained as a non-airborne virus (Jason hands his wife the morphine instead of injecting her himself) evil Jason makes some more intelligent decisions, essentially Blake Crouch made improvements to the show to clarify or rewrite elements that were questionable in the book. As for multiple Jasons, they went from hundreds to maybe a dozen. Plus there’s a follow up on some of the other travelers as well.

      It's the most frustrating part of his books, like it's always the family man thrown into a whacky/extinction level event and the family has no effect on the plot whatsoever. They are ways for the male lead to self actualise in like a oh my god he's literally me way. And for someone who doesn't care that much about romance, like I can stomach romance sub plots but they're so dry it annoys me. They serve their purpose as a way to give the reader some down time but there are better ways.

When we discovered the twist of the Jasons showing up, that was the first time I thought, "well this is cool! I haven't seen this before!" I could rant but I think all my issues boil down to the book treating Jason's wife as a McGuffin. Everyone wants her; we never really get to know her. Make it a rule that he could only die by natural means and that becomes a huge delima for 1st Jason who was displaced. Also, there should have been rules for interaction at some point - like what could he not do because it would upset the balance of the space-time continuum.

    I gave it 2 stars on Goodreads when I read it back in 2019. I agree fully with this review. In my review: "This book is like one long episode of the 90's TV show Sliders. It was clearly written with adaptation in mind--the protagonist is a cookie-cutter hero archetype (he's a genius! But also a great dad/family man!). The entire first half of the book is simply waiting for the protagonist to realize something you figured out in Chapter 1. And again, a lot of the plot of this book seems to be waiting for the protagonist to make inevitable decisions."

    I literally went out and bought this book after watching the first part of this video because I was like, wait it’s bad? So many of my friends like it tho, I wanna know for myself.
    So thanks for getting me to finally read this cuz I loved it hahaha. You definitely have some criticisms here I agree with. Pandemic world is one of the stupidest things I’ve read. But I don’t agree with all of the complaints you had. One that stuck out to me was the why Jason2 didn’t kill OG Jason. The book actually explains this a couple times with both OG Jason guessing and later Jason2 confirming he sent OG to his timeline with the logic of it giving that Jason everything he’d want. It’s dumb and is pointed out that it was really just a way for Jason2 to justify and cope with his horrible actions.
    I think you and I also had slightly different interpretations of the themes which def colored our takes on the conclusion. I didn’t feel it was so much that the book was saying Jason2 choices bad more than it was saying stop thinking about how things could be different because it’s more than just the binary of one decision and the two possible outcomes. I also didn’t think the book was saying protagonist Jason was best Jason morally more that he’s one of an infinite amount that make up the composite that is Jason and he’s the one who happens to come up with the plan that gets him with his wife and son alone.
    I also loved the “Confederacy of Jasons” twist. It was a twist that simultaneously had me going “Holy shit wtf wow” and “Oh duh, how did I not see this coming?” It makes sense to me, in an infinite multiverse, other Jasons that branch off would survive and make it back, and it made for what was to me the most thrilling part of the book. How do I now need with all these other mes and also what justifies me being the one to win over others?
    Anyway, still loved the video now having watched the rest of it. You make your points well and are very entertaining to watch and listen to. I’m glad you got me to pick up this book off my TBR even though you hated it so thanks hahaha

    I spent the last few years since reading this books thinking I read a differente book from everyone else because I hated it and everyone else seems to love it. I'll admit, a big reason I didn't like it was because this is 80% thriller and 20% sci-fi and I don't like thrillers. But even the sci-fi part comes off as dumb. Maybe in a different story I would have enjoyed it more.
    And I agree with you. The characters are terrible. They don't make good decisions and are incredibly unlikable.

  • @Raymics
    @Raymics 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    while I do agree with most of your thoughts(especially the ending), there are a few points that you pointed out as bizarre that do have some level of logic in them. I'll try to explain them but some of these are copium as my mind tries to find reasons for some of the choices.
    1. The Zombie Virus: was it dumb to visit your wife? absolutely. but you have to keep in mind, the man saw her getting shot right in front of him, he cannot think properly. the author knows the visit is stupid and tells you about it but jason visits her anyways, it just shows how much his mind is messed up right now. I do see how stupid it looks that the virus didn't spread, especially considering how lethal and contagious it was shown to be. my head canon( read: copium) is that is the dna of humans in that world is slightly off in a way that people from the OG can't catch it. well it is certainly a stretch, it is a possibility which is why I included it. yes, it's stupid. (edit: there is also a possibility that our jason DID get infected but we don't know that yet. remember, they never mentioned the incubation time for the virus to begin with, or if it was possible for some people to be immune to it and so on. it is a copium to a highest degree but you can't deny it is a possibility. i feel like that is one of the points that the author is trying to make. that its left open-ended because YOU can decide how the story ends, and provided your argument could theoretically happen, it probably did happen in an alternate timeline)
    2. About why Dani thinks her Jason is real: I am pretty sure the reason that it feels like Dani suddenly declares how the real jason is is because she's trying to grasp reality and thus chooses to ignore the complexity of the problem. that deep down, she knows she might never know who is real so chooses to declare one and hope for the best. I don't think I articulated my point exactly but i hope my point came across.
    3. if Our Jason is THE Jason: I can understand how annoying it can be to not get a definite point, I feel like that was the point? truth is, we can never know who is real as they are all equally real to themselves. its not meant to be an answered question, it was meant to be a rhetorical one.
    4. The Ending: yes, its stupid. I don't like it either. Felt like a cop out to me as well. the way I think of it, it is A ending, but not the ideal one. a story typically ends in an ideal way, no strings left hanging. the author chose one possible ending, partly(in my opinion) to make the readers question it themselves. as in what could be the ending? we don't know who's right, who's wrong. the story feels muddy and that is intentional. I'm aware that I'm grasping on straws here but that was how i felt when i read it.
    5. Sending Jason to Scientist World: you mentioned how Sc Jason was willing to kill other jasons later but couldn't kill them before. the way i look at it, he wasn't willing to kill himself at the time due to guilt. hell, the therapist tells you that when OG jason questions it. the reason he was willing to kill later was because he was doing it for his family, at these, that was his justification. the guilt he would feel is no longer there as he found a reason for it.
    overall, the story is an 8/10 for me. I have my qualms with it. there are parts of it I didn't enjoy at all. like when the Scientist dude from the lab realized that it was a different jason, why did he want to immediately kill him? he is literally living proof of the experiment, they could have checking how different the jason's were, what changes were there in their respective timelines and so much more. the author didnt explore that so that was a disappointment. i know that the chances are low, but I would recommend reading Recursion before Giving up. Personally, I felt like it was much better, more coherent and less convulated than Dark matter. Hope my copi- I mean, my arguments make sense

    I also didn't really like this book and thought Jason made incredibly stupid decisions for a "smart" guy. One of the dumbest decisions in the book was when they walked out into the deathly frigid world with normal clothes and exactly zero plan; at some point they just turn around and realize they have no idea how to get back to the box. How could you possibly be any dumber?

    Dark Matter is good for those who are completely new to reading and to sci fi as a genre. It's much too dumbed down if you are already familiar with the genre. I personally found it a pale imitation of And Then There Were N-1 by Sarah Pinsker, which has the advantage of being shorter, not dumbing things down, and also free on Escape Pod.

    I hated recursion by the same author, and I’m always amazed by how much other people love it. The thin veneer of “science” he uses right the beginning of his story, just to throw it all out and make it all basically nonsense by the end, is incredibly frustrating. It sounds like it’s the same with Dark Matter. Completely agree on the “tonal clash” between the nonsense, cartoonish science and the plot being played up as “serious” or “realistic”. How are we supposed to take the science seriously when the author clearly didn’t care enough to worry about its internal consistency?

    My issue was that just as Jason splits into more Jasons, Danni will split into more Dannis. There IS NO ORIGINAL / PRIME DANNI, or for that matter there's no original Jason, just many versions. So there should be infinity Dannis to match up with infinity Jasons, and/or whoever they want. When a binary decision splits the multiverse, neither of the 2 new ones is the original, or both are.

    • @fnw100
      @fnw100 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The other Jasons could have travelled to different universes to find alternative versions of Daniela instead of murdering each other. There must be infinite versions of Daniela at that point, each branching from the original Daniela Jason knew in his native universe. Perhaps in one universe, Daniela chose a different meal or slept in an hour later, yet still followed the same path as the Daniela we knew. In that case, she would essentially be the same person.
      It was frustrating that the book didn't even acknowledge this especially considering that Jasons are supposed to be geniuses.

I saw a few episodes of that and figured it might make for a fun read. I mean, you can't really tell from the cover. So I downloaded it from the library's website and the disappointment began.
    I think I must have blocked out most of my experience with the book. I forgot most of what happened. I remember thinking the wife is a really uninteresting character, but the author really wants you to think she is interesting. Like why does he like her, besides the fact that the main character married her. And every alternate version of him wants to replace him so they can be with her. I'd say he can do better, but he doesn't make smart moves.

Whether it makes sense or not. But I was already annoyed with the pathetic mess, becaıuse actually Crouch is a terrible writer and the guy's life felt so... I don't know, his relationship with his family felt hilariously fake and setup-y to me, all this bogus sentimentality with not much behind it AT ALL, like "my expat girlfriend got knocked up, time to dump my career and have this family, I guess. I guess I love this woman and this surprise child unconditionally now. wow. oh just HOW HOT is my wife with the Spanish eyes, huh. huh! mm I wanna jump her and vice versa." but then: evil!Jason 2.0." And everything rolls into nonsensical motion, chopped up diction, fast-paced action. Hey, maybe it will all work out if I mindlessly beg this mystery man for my life, surely he'll spare me!
