I watched the movie for the first time last year while recovering from an injury. I felt I hadn't given it my full attention - nodding at points because I'd had a long day. I wondered when I'd see it again. Thank you for this video on Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. I've known of him and the failed attempt for decades - that he was considered a fool - and his failure was celebrated in Britain around Halloween. I had not made the connection that he had threatened the rule of King James I, the king associated with the publishing of the 1611 translation of the Bible in England. Well, I forgot that fact. Fawkes is a fascinating character. I do not condone violence or terrorist activity - yet I can see how persecuted believers passionate about their faith might consider ways to end the oppression they suffered. And in today's World, I can see individuals fearing the continued erosion of their "rights" - and fearing the prophesied One World Government - would seek ways to avert the tyranny that is to come. "Remember, remember, the Fifth of November...."
I’ve heard this story recounted by several great story tellers, none doing it so much simple understandable justice as you. so glad I found your channel, currently in the middle of plumbing through the years of quality posting 😁✨
Here in South Africa we celebrate a day called "Guy Fawkes" where we light fire works... remnants of our british colonization and influence... I always wondered what the story truely is behind it all... Now, I can draw an informed opinion on the day, thanks.
In New Mexico, in early September, we have a similar burning, only I don't think Zozobra represents a specific person so much as an ideal. He is called Old Man Gloom, and he burns away the negative influences before we get shut in for the winter (though New Mexico winters are very mild so we rarely get shut in for more than a few hours). It's a cathartic thing so having a figure representing a common enemy is a good idea. Give us an outlet and a target for our aggression and you can prevent some group acting out.
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever...be...forgot." A line from one of my favorite movies V For Vendetta. One of my favorite monochromatic movies (black and white films) is shown in part in the movie, the original Count of Monte Cristo from 1934 starring Robert Donat as Edmund Dantes. The original Count of Monte Cristo can be watched for free directly on TH-cam. I definitely recommend watching it for those who also love classic monochromatic films.

And in today's World, I can see individuals fearing the continued erosion of their "rights" - and fearing the prophesied One World Government - would seek ways to avert the tyranny that is to come. I’ve heard this story recounted by several great story tellers, none doing it so much simple understandable justice as you. so glad I found your channel, currently in the middle of plumbing through the years of quality posting 😁✨
Plot twist : Guy Fawkes was Thoughty2 all along
Always has been.

Awesome video as usual... Love learning more history of Guy Fawkes. Very interesting
V for Vendetta is dedicated for this whole plot!!😊
That movie is full of fantasy as well.
Here in South Africa we celebrate a day called "Guy Fawkes" where we light fire works... remnants of our british colonization and influence... I always wondered what the story truely is behind it all... Now, I can draw an informed opinion on the day, thanks.
In my neck of the woods we've always celebrated the night as a valiant effort.

This is a misquote, he didn't say his name was "John Johnson", he actually said "Don Johnson".
Miami Vice? Crocker was so cool, he had a super unique gun at the time called a Bren 10 in 10mm because reasons.
Long Johnson
he who has the last laugh wins, guy fawkes has amassed more remembrance then any royal in history.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November. The gunpowder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.
Probably because two of my relatives were involved. lol
I can't believe they had "Flat Pack Furniture" way back then.

Riddle: Who was Guy Fawkes?
Answer: The only man who ever had a good reason to enter Parliament.
Think it's meant to be ... he was the last man to enter parliament with honest intentions I believe 🤔
Guy is a hero
... Im sorry but this is just calling for my harry potter addiction... "that's a phoenix" riddle said exparastedly
I kinda can’t believe that the entire plot fell apart because one of the men sent a “don’t come to school tomorrow” note

Fabulous piece of work. Cheerz for that.
Can't help but feel like we need another Guy Fawkes to sort out the current state of the government
Especially in Eagle Town (America)
@@your_dad_on_vacation Excuse but we demand only the *biggest* descriptors. It's *Planet Eagle* _tyvm._
Says the average, firearm-wielding American citizen. I'm merely a citizen; an extremely disappointed one.
His name shall be Fuy Gawkes
You meant a successful Guy Fawkes right? 😜
We would call that a terrorist... right? I mean, i don't like the government but I'm not gonna say we need terrorist. What's the solution? Labour take over and... the same repeats? All politicians only care for themselves and screw us (the people) over daily. Wishing death one a group of people seems pretty bad, to only have them replaced by more of the same.
"Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot"
When I was a little kid growing up in Nigeria (in the 60's) I enthusiastically participated in the Burning of the Guy (even though I had no clue about the meaning or its origins).
"Ideas are bulletproof, Mr. McCready"
So glad someone finally explained this
There is a documentary on this that explained it perfectly not just thoughty.
This will make your toes curl.....I worked at an elderly care home several years ago now & the same week as bonfire night a really popular resident passed away. Not only did they actually have a Guy Fawkes made up & perched on top of the wood pile then set on fire (which I haven't actually seen that done for maybe 20 years) but they'd dressed the Guy Fawkes in the residents actual clothing who'd died that week.......
Fun fact; I live in Newfoundland, Canada, which was a British republic until 1949. We still celebrate bonfire night here, though we don't burn effigies of Guy Fawkes. In fact, most people here don't even know the origin of the holiday anymore
I watch all your videos, this one was really good. Keep it up 2
That's the problem with involving too many people in a secret plot. Someone's gonna slip up somewhere
Also, "hanged, drawn and quartered"... Talk about excessive violence

It's November fifth, funny this played after todays episode

Hey Thoughty2, eating nettle has been in the customs of the people living in Darjeeling, India (it's the place where I come from). Now if the Brits eat nettle like the people here in Darjeeling, I was interested whether the custom in our Nepali Culture of eating nettle plants came from the Brits, or was it the Brits who took a fancy in our custom?
Big fan of your channel. Just wanted to add that Guy Fawkes night is also celebrated in Newfoundland….Englands first colony. We just called it Bonfire Night. We don’t burn the Guy though.
I so love this. You kick ass Thoughty2. Guy Fawkes is quite familiar to me. Thanks for your show and sharing a great piece of 🇬🇧 history. I think that’s a bloody good job 👏😂🤣😆.
Guy Fawkes was a hero
i was a US child when i did a school report on him...i got a good grade but more important....he became a HERO to me....
Thank you for a highly informative video. I knew some of this - but not the whole thing. I've often found myself wondering what the aftermath would have been if they had gotten away with it!
i thought there was some kind of big pistol battle musketts whatever
@@ibrahim-sj2cr I saw a documentary on it many years ago but not sure, unless that's referring to when the rest of them were caught.

Brilliant! "The last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions." Or any other government official anywhere for that matter.

i want to re-watch v for vendetta now
it was a very good movie
My favorite movie. Re-watched it so many times I know the script like a song.
I was thinking the same thing.
It's currently on Netflix, great movie
Hey...thoughty 2, you sure make history and those little lockdowns we had more pleasurable plus the fact I suffer with osteoarthritis and cant get out like I used to and you even make the painfull days go a little less dark by keeping me focused on something interesting (under statement there ) lol keep up the great work..👍✌️🇬🇧
Hi mate, I hope you’re doing ok now :) sending best wishes. I saw your comment and it made me smile :))
I'm related to John and Kit Wright and not many people know they came from a Royal bloodline of Wrights and that same family had actually helped overthrow a King long before this event even happened and how my very distant great grandfather became Knighted. After that they held high titles for centuries. Knights, Lords, etc. Sir Thomas Wright, Lord of Kelvestone Hall, Norfolk England was the last descendant before we moved to America for religious freedom. We were Quakers at that point.
Guy Fawkes night is one of my favourite childhood memories. Hard to believe it's from the 1600s and made it all the way to Australia 🇦🇺
Remember, remember, the 5th of November.... Poor Guy had a tough life and a horrible death.
Just listened your podcast 👍
I remember as a child chanting: "Guy, Guy - string him up high. Hang him from a lamppost and let him die." Ahhhh, such fond memories of childhood innocence
😂😂😂😂 are you kidding me?? That's gold

One of the more interesting videos you made recently. :D
the most fascinating and fun history lesson i have enjoyed in quite some time (excluding the other Thoughty2 videos, of course)
ancient stone circles
Most inspiring place I went to, the stones represented a *ton*
This made me realize that the whole plot of South Park during the season when Kyle's dad joins up with random trolls to stop an all powerful AI machine being built in Sweden called Troll Hunter is just a very accurate analog of the Guy Fawkes story.
Skankhunt42 is just an analog for Guy Fawkes.
I learned about Guy Fawkes back in the 70's when I had a crush on a certain British pop star.
That led me to research him. Down the rabbit hole I went. The 70's before any pocket encyclopedia. Real books...so many books.
Then came the 90's & the vendetta masks. I thought, this seems familiar. Oh yeah, that 'guy'.

All us kids in the 70's used to go round our village, dragging a Guy behind on a hand cart. Knocking on doors and saying "Penny for the Guy", and if the person who answerd the door did'nt give you a penny, someone would put red paint on their doorstep.
Happy days.
That's vandalism. In America we would have shot at you with potatoes guns full of eggs.
Do it as an adult and the rounds change up.

Extortion even for a penny is wrong.
Vandalism for being told no is why the world is fucked up.
So asking for a penny and vandalizing is the same as asking for 100billion dollars, and when told no you vandalize.
Thug mentality in adults gets them bodied. It is best to scare it out of the children and have them respect common law.

Bonfire night is also celebrated here in Newfoundland and Labrador
In Greece, we have a very similar custom where we burn the visage of Judas every Easter.
LOL can't be many people named Judas in your country then 😄
@@Toastrackman Considering our naming customs (basically; name your kids after Orthodox Christian saints or whatever their grandparents were called -which is often the same), I don't think we have anyone named Judas.
Then again, we have a male name for "Bull" so... there can be exceptions.
Some of our names are from ancient times too like Apollo, Agorasti and Dionisi to name a few

Cool video! Super interesting, as always. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the US who think that Guy Fawkes is a fictional character made up for the movie V for Vendetta lol
We aren't without culture here is the U.S. We know he was real and what he did. Loved the V movie though.
I think our narrator is adorable! Plus he has a great mustache! And he does a fantastic job of narrating these stories. 🥰🥰
Your map is a little wrong.. Ireland didn’t join the union until 1801 and they left in 1920 so it doesnt make sense to show northern Ireland and not ROI
Not to mentin all the "British traditions" mentioned, all English.
It's weird people celebrate his death... here in America he would be celebrated for his efforts, how blind and stupid can a population be. When presented the opportunity to break ourselves away from that monarchy we stomped tf out of them and became the undisputed strongest world power in the history of all mankind. Goes to show what you can do when you learn to think for yourself instead of cowering in fear.
Funny thing is, I'm British and knew of the gunpowder plot, guy fawkes and obviously bonfire night but it never actually occurred to me that we are the only country to celebrate it... I always thought everyone celebrated bonfire night 😂
