adults in general don't think of kids as people. they are objects, property, like pets. of course they wouldn't care about giving kids shows they actually connect with. just something to distract them like throwing the dog a bone.
I'd argue children are more cruel this days is because kids media doesn't show bulling, bigotry etc. I remember being disgusted by the treatment Quasimodo received because of his disability in Notre-Dam cartoon. I may not have known the word for sexual assault but I've known that Esmeralda was uncomfortable by Frodo touching her.
I absolutely loved the darker elements of the story when I was younger, it made me spooked in a good way. It got me pretty sad when I realized how BAD Winx was getting... Art can inspire even at a young age, where is that now?
It’s a shame that executives can ruin artistry just for their greed. Like imagine how many cartoons/shows we missed out on just because it wasn’t “marketable” 😭
And what's worse, Zaslav and those Elsagate content farmers are hurting animation badly. 💀 I can see why people miss the Golden Age of Animation alot more. They didn't had to deal with stuff like this...
I love the old Winx. I grew up on it, Totally Spies, Sailor Moon especially. 4kids had an odd hand in a lot of my early childhood media. I remember one of the biggest mysteries of my childhood was wondering where the heck Winx Club went and my pretty fairy characters. I loved Flora and Stella. I also grew up with free reign of the TV, and whereas there are absolutely things kids shouldn't watch, it's so dumb to play the safe game. Especially here in America, where it's still somewhat expected to just release your kid into the real world once they turn 18. In the case of mind-numbing nothings they grow up on, the child will quickly learn how to go behind their parent's back and find all of the terrible things they can, or they'll be so sheltered from the real world that they won't be prepared for adulthood and a Coming of Age will be incredibly late. It doesn't have to be that way, of course, but it's very very common. I grew up with a fantastically large imagination and everything I watched "for adults" on television aided to it. I love mystery because of X-files, I love space because of Star Trek. I grew up sheltered in a different way, but I at least knew what the world was like outside because I wasn't completely shunned from everything that wasn't "safe" for kids. And continuously watering down kids shows with actual depth to opt for something "safer" has resulted in... Spiderman drives Lightning McQueen to meet Elsa. Which is one of the dumbest sentences, that isn't even ironic, I've ever had to write. LET CHILDREN FEEL EMOTIONS. I love the content. I didn't realize how small of a channel you were based on the quality until you mentioned the 20k thing. I wish you the best of luck! Now on to watching more of your content
unfortunately i've met many of the first generation of overly sheltered kids (who are now 26 ish, because this started when i was around 5), most of the ones i've met are so disturbed my everyday disappointments and struggles that they struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts-- i'm friends with one of those people, he literally said to me in a conversation: "If life is always going to have difficult times, whats the point in living? I just want to stay in bed and watch tv all day, i dont want to have to work or be uncomfortable at all." this is someone who also refuses to learn some things that are required to succeed in their career choice because they think their gross. its just sad. my mom was always heavily against participation awards, now i see why.
I remember rewatching Winx Club on YT with a 9 yr old cousin during quarantine, and I was in my late 20s who grew up with Winx, and I'm a man. But even I was shocked to find myself tearing up during that scene in Season 1 when Mike and Vanessa showed how much they loved Bloom when they revealed to her that she was adopted, and Bloom came to treasure her adopted parents even more instead of resenting them, despite that same episode showing Bloom inclining to resent them at first for not revealing this secret to her way earlier since she came to discover it first through a vision rather than through them. The way this was executed, and Bloom still made her choice to love Mike and Vanessa anyways was so profound in my adult brain, but this flew over my head when I saw this on TV for the first time when I was young. It's one of those golden moments from OG Winx Club, amongst several more, that touched even an adult audience member like me who had grown out of the show, and it reminded me of how good this show was, bringing me back as a fan out of respect for the quality it used to have.
Making things too "safe" actually hinders a child's development and results in a poorly-adjusted adult. Winx Club was never a particularly "dark" series, but it had some moments. Most particularly, for me, was thinking about what happened to Sky: drugged and made into a puppet by Diaspro, apparently aware of what was happening but could not regain control of himself, as if he was hijacked or possessed by Diaspro and without any ability to exercise his free will. He was basically drugged, held prisoner, paralyzed, and r----ed (although the show denies this) by someone he never wanted anything to do with in the first place, forced to watch himself attacking someone that he actually did love. The audience's complete lack of empathy or understanding of the male characters caused me to look at other women quite differently. It revealed a very one-sided trait most of them possessed that caused me to be more suspicious of them; so I have never been burned by other women the way most have been at some point. Seriously, do you trust women that defend or identify with Diaspro? How about Queen Amentia, who was going to have Stella abused to death if Brandon did not agree to marry Amentia, do you trust her or people that remind you of her? These types of themes force us to confront uncomfortable truths and from there we can grow as people.
I'm a 31 year old man now, and i still tear up at moments in the early Seasons of Winx Club. Bloom finding out about Sparks/Domino, Bloom finding out how her parents adopted her, Musa's mother, Baltor/Valtor blinding Aisha/Layla. etc. etc. The early Seasons had some beautifully done moments like this. I still smile like a tool when i hear 'Feels Like Magic,' from the 4Kids dub. (I know its controversial to like that dub but its still my favourite version.) Fun fact, i was babysitting my nephew a couple years back and even he was fixated by the show. Bearing in my he wasn't even 2 yet and nothing had heald his attention yet. Odds are he just liked the pretty visuals, but nothing had ever calmed him down like that before. Even when i was feeding him he was trying to keep his eyes on the screen. I'm well aware he was a baby and probably just liked the visuals but we'd tried him with Lion King, Pokemon, etc. etc. And he barely acknowledged them, but with Winx he got annoyed if one of us got in the way. Me and my sister can't wait until he's old enough to watch it him properly. We're planning on doing special 90's/2000's nights with him, where we watch old shows we loved as kids with him, watch a couple of episodes weekly and then wait a week to watch more. I think it'll be a nice way to spend time with him. I really hope the reboot does a better job with the writing. Like i hope they get back to that level of writing, the writing wasn't always perfect but there was a clear effort to not treat the audience like idiots.
@@natbatlightwood5288 The version I saw was the FoxBox/4Kids/American version and for me it is the only one that really brings life to the characters; the Rai dub felt very hollow and flat comparatively. And it is the continuity in which each season had a greater threat than the season before it; the villains getting stronger alongside the heroes, rather than stagnating halfway through. Given how tame people think kid's shows should be these days (we live in a time that treats 15 year olds as more similar to 10 year olds than to 20 year olds) I am not optimistic about the upcoming reboot.
One thing...season 4 wasn't co-produced with Nickelodeon. Premiere of season was 2009 and Rainbow started work with Nickelodeon in 2010. There's also two english dubs (Cinelume & Nickelodeon) because of that.
@@keetard I feel like the puppet rigging in that season was pretty well-made compared to later on. Kinda reminds me of Wayside's early episodes in a way.
I'm sorry to hear that :( This kind of lonelyness is the worst; I absolutely relate. I also didn't do anything for Halloween other than work on this video, so let's say we spent Halloween together in a way^^ I'm glad my video could cheer you up and hope that in the future there will be more possibilities for you to spend time with lovely people rather than a silly video essayist.
I loved magical girl stuff when I was a teenager and I enjoyed watching Winx Club. I remember my mum criticising it though because it was "for babies" - it was, of course, the English version. I do envy those who got to enjoy the original European versions but I'm glad I got to see what I did 😊
I was born in 2011 but I watched winx a lot through me childhood and it will forever have a place in my heart The og one not the new one I watched it so much when I was younger bloom is my favorite and will never stop being my favorite
Oh! You´re the same age as my little sister. I´m glad you could enjoy the show as it should be enjoyed, in the original and without this weird subliminal merch advertisement. Sincerely, a 2002 girly.

Also...if Amore hadn't used a true love blossom in the bouquet the whole Princess trio of Princesses would have been doomed and they were not doing so well anyway because Stella was drained to the point of...demise...and if that had happened...well we would have found out about whether or not villified fairies is a thing.
actually season 4 was not coproduced with nickelodeon, it was made in 2009 by rainbow and rai, nick started coproducing the series at season 5 with the nick specials from the first 2 seasons and season 3&4 having a new water down dub, i’m really sorry for people from english speaking countries cause the european dubs are so good and faithful to the original and to this day there’s not actual good english winx dub…
The sad thing about it? Nobody has ever attempted to do what would really be best here in the English regions. Redub the first 4 seasons and two movies using the original script with the 4kids actors and touch-up the animation quality to match season 5 and 6's animation. They could also make some fun what ifs too, since despite the edits 4kids didn't edit Winx nearly as bad as everything else excluding the raw footage airred for Shaman King....I mean it would be nice to have a "4kids What if" for SOTLK, MA and Season 4...and also in MA...edit the Believix graphics out and replace it with the initially intended Enchantix since it's clearly meant to set up Season 4. Also 4kids probably would have given a real reason for Bloom being the leader of the band instead of "because main character" since the whole "can't sing" without in-universe lessons by demand doesn't apply to Liza Jacqueline. I could see that version going "Musa, I'm happy you're getting to sing a lot more this season, but you should really save your voice for your solo nights and if your solo career takes off, you need a replacement and it's either Stella, Flora or me" and Musa picks Bloom because Flora's too shy and Stella's too...indignant.
ahh, winx...a show that had me in a chokehold for the first few years of my childhood. my country also dubbed it (slovenia) and i watched it in that language, tho i do speak italian as well. fun fact, a slovenian music group, foxy teens, made a song called "Me Smo Winx" (we are winx), inspired by the show
I'd assume the later seasons having more of a preschool show feel might be due to how some of the writers from those seasons are those mainly known for working on preschool shows. Seasons 5-6 have writers like Janice Burgess (creator of The Backyardigans), Adam Peltzman (creator of Wallykazam), and Sascha Paladino (creator of Miles From Tomorrowland).
I heard that Janice Burgess just died recently. I'm sorry to hear about her death and I think Backyardigans was a cute show for little kids, but I don't like the idea of trying to make a show meant more for teens and preteens, more preschool-like. To tell you the truth, I don't like the reboot for Backyardigans either... it feels more like Cocomelon type stuff from what is used to be. Even though the stories were more simple and silly than Winx, it still had story
That and also a general presumption that tends to happen when you work with Viacom and Disney and not Yakko, Wakko and Dot. At least Yakko, Wakko and Dot would have allowed more intriguing stories to have developed that pushed farther than seasons 3 and 4 did and they pushed pretty hard too.
I watched and loved the Nickelodeon version when I was younger but I had no idea they changed so much! I would love to rewatch it but the original European version
18:48 this line is especially funny when you remember that nick worked with jakks pacific who made the dolls and Musa and Tecna never got a harmonix release despite being shown in the first commercial 😭 they were also excluded from the enchantix and charmix line along with Aisha
Well the Musa and Tecna Harmonix were intended to be Holiday specials at the time, but it didn't exactly work out due to Season 5's weird airing schedule having gone from a decent double-play in season 4 on the weekends (after a nice weekday afternoon special in season 3 because "if it isn't Spongebob...not even Bloom can avoid getting roasted" especially since she almost roasted the Sponge during the 4kids/Cinelumè days...and Viacom can't have that any more than WB can admit that someone besides Batman exists at DC...I mean WB just recently remembered that Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Captain, Green Arrow and Flash exist, but really WB still only cares about Batman.) and so there went that idea. I mean really...especially since they tried to just burn through the first half and airred episodes 505 and 510 out of order.I mean I get that they're special episodes, but it works better to not mess up a show that has continuity to it.
I had the onor to grow up with Winx club in Italy (im italian, 23 years old rn.) I was a little kid when winx club was coming out and I watched a lot of tv, due to the fact that I’m an only child and my parents were a lot out for work, and I watched the normal tv because we didn’t have optional tv channels (the one that you had to pay, like all the Disney channel one or Cartoon Network. I basically grew up with only the basic one). I grew up at the same pace of winx and I had every dvd, I went to the cinema to see the first movie and I have seen also winx on ice. And oh boy what I have to say. Watching it in the original version, with everything was magical. To this day the third season holds a special place in my heart. I watched also the fourth, but I was in middle school when it came out and I didn’t watch anymore a lot of winx… and also it hadn’t the same feeling to it. I dropped completely when Nabu was killed. The broken marriage of Aisha was too much for me. Here in Italy was a FENOMENON. Literally everyone watched the winx and knew what it was. When I discovered that the English version was butchered… I was horrified. Layla? No marriage? Terrible jokes? Wtf. I’m so sorry that you couldn’t see the real magic that was that show. There are no more cartoons like that. P.s. if you loved the winx you would love also w.i.t.c.h. And code lyoko!
Not gonna lie, I love the fact that nickelodeon introduced me to Winx as a kid, but as I got older and manage to access to internet, I tried finding the episodes I watched only to find the original series and got very confused. Mostly because I noticed the different voices on some videos and didn't know about different English dubs at the time. I actually realized the censorship with nick because of season 4 not only because of the forever boyfriend line but one time I watched the RAI English for some episodes knowing that the next day nick Winx was airing a new episode in its dub. It was a crazy coincidence the same episode was one of them and I noticed the dialogue changes. Did the same for 4kids in some episodes. As the seasons, I always watch them when they aired, and I kept watching. While there were some elements that annoyed or confused me as I grew (you mentioned some of them, going back to alfea in season 5 as students was one of them), there was always something in each season I liked. The only season that annoyed me the most was season 7 honestly. Just fell off episodes after Roxy's crystal was stolen, and I didn't see the rest until again by complete coincidence, I change the channel to nickjr and saw it airing that very season. The episode was the last one. Such as life. Anyway, Happy Halloween. My first 4kids episode was the Hallowinx one.
I understand some of the outfits were kind of short and Nickelodeon did some censorship, but judging by what else they had on that crappy channel **cough cough Ren & Stimpy** **cough cough iCarly and other perverted Dan schnieder sitcoms** it was so unnecessary! Winx didn't really need to be censored! Like, as someone who grew up with Nickelodeon, I also have some trauma from it too. Also, as someone who speaks English and wants to give Winx a try, I might watch both English dubs to compare them because I can not do subtitles, it's too distracting. btw Happy Halloween to you too
@@jocelynecupcake I actually tried looking for English subtitles with the original Italian but couldn't find it. I might consider rewatching season 1 for the comparison since I never watched it in full. You know where to find eng subs for Italian dub by the way?
I had admittedly never heard of Winx Club before you first announced this video, but I love the points you made - especially about not underestimating children’s ability to comprehend nuance and emotion. I couldn’t agree more! Kids can be so emotionally intelligent, and media should nurture that! (Btw. that point really reminded me of Jacob Geller‘s video essay called “Every Zelda is the darkest Zelda”, one of my all-time favourite video essays). I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and anyone else with a love for Winx that the new series will be a return to good television!!! 🤞🤞🤞
People now a days have a black and white view of age, we treat 12 year olds the same way we treat 3 year olds, some people seriously think a 9 to 12 year old kid wouldn't know what death is.
i loved this video, i agree with everything!!! i will miss the old winx and the potential it had for the rest of my life. i genuinely hope one day it gets the reboot it deserves. and what i loved about it when i watched it at 5-7 years old was the scary parts, the deep parts, the amazing plotlines, the dialogue, the worldbuilding, the intrigue, the fashion, the unique art style etc. like i could still tell it was interesting, unique, well thought out, and had real meaningful messages even though i was so young. its like people think kids cant tell the difference between good quality or bad. kids are still humans with brains and emotions they can still percieve and sense so much and watching winx was one of the most beautiful experiences in my childhood. i am not traumatized from the scary scenes, those were some of the scenes i loved the most and they were memorable and made a real lasting impression on me. i dont get why that is so difficult for some people to understand these days.
Watching winx content is very difficult at times. I can watch the unicorn of war all day, but this video is pulling on my emotionally for reasons I don’t understand.
Very well made breakdown of the history of Winx Club. I was a W.I.T.C.H. fan first and it's safe to say the all of us W.I.T.C.H. fans don't agree with what Disney did with both lawsuits, the one where the creators of the W.I.T.C.H. magazine losing the battle to keep the rights to W.I.T.C.H. and the second being Disney and the W.I.T.C.H. vs. Winx Club plagiarism claim, as if two or more shows of a similar idea and concept and belong in the same genre couldn't co-exist. I'm a fan if both IPs and it's a shame that all companies care about is competition and profits and end up ruining things and then blame the fans instead of themselves.
I kinda argue against season 4 being the downfall we need to remember that s4 was still mostly produced by rainbow and tbh i don’t think they aimed it at younger audiences id say the opposite they established the girls were graduated adults and showed the transition from normal high school antics to some experimental storylines u even have the Winx questioning about what they want to do afterwards what path that wanna follow weather they want to spend their lives as guardian fairies or go after their dreams so i think it was more of an experimental series to see where they could take it with mature storylines just for Nickelodeon to kill it all by sending them back to school and any thought of them maturing or growling killed
While it’s not fully the downfall of the show , it still feels like the beginning of the end of the show , I mostly say that as it would have problems the later seasons would have, like bloom becoming a Mary Sue , more stupid romance drama , especially with musa and riven , it’s funny how season 6 managed to break these two off for good, while season 4 managed to break them up only for them to get back together in the same season and it didn’t help that till episode 12-13 , the season‘a first half was not good and while the second half improved it still had its issues with it being where the show introduced dual transformation in Sophix and lovix , I mean that’s why we get two new forms every seasons, and honestly Roxy didn’t feel like much like a winx because, she has almost no dynamic or so with the other girls and bloom
I've always hated the phrase "it's for kids" as an excuse for poor quality in a film or show or really anything made for younger or all-age groups. Sure, there is a level of simplicity you need to maintain in children's media so that children can actually understand and appreciate it, but kids aren't stupid; they're just inexperienced. I mean, what would you rather your kid have for lunch: a bowl of chicken soup, or a jar of cake frosting? A kid would happily eat one or the other if they got it, but one is clearly better for them and made with more effort.
I greatly enjoy your videos, started watching when you only had the weirdcore and the ones before uploaded and I am glad I stuck around !! ^^ The weirdcore video helped me explain the reason I gravitate so much towards it to many of my friends and also my headmates [I am part of a System/Am Plural due to childhood trauma] and I am glad to have found your channel ! ^^
Great videos, informative with a good thoughtful commentary. Subbed immediately. I totally agree regarding the quality of kid shows… the shows I have seen as a kid formed me and contributed to make me who I am today, it’s sad thinking there is less and less good quality shows for children nowadays
It's frustrating how companies are making shows to maximise their profits and not actually shows that are so interesting and good quality that they are bringing profit because people actually care about them. Look at gravity falls Alex make it so that both adults and kids can enjoy. This show is so good that after so many years the fandom is still pretty big, the book of bill is a bestseller. The creators put a lot of care and love to this project and it was worth it. Companies are so busy on making profitable kid shows to sell toys but underestimate the audience of teenagers and adults who buy merch too. It might not be as big of a profit as kids but still dedicated fanbase is not only profit source in my opinion but a quality on itself. Fans "market" the show by making fanarts, cosplays, animations. It shows that the project is good. But obviously the only people who care about it are the show creators and fans not the company managers...
As a 2006 baby, I’m glad I grew up with the early 90s and 2000s old cartoons as my parents used to play old DvDs of old cartoons which I had an amazing time watching. Even though I might not understand the darker undertones of winx club I still understood the general concept of each episode and I resonated with flora as well! And now that I’m 18 and rewatching winx club I understood why I resonated with flora too. I just don’t understand why companies dumb down plotlines and just make them all the same with no consequences most of the time it just makes every show look the same.. I am so grateful to have grown up with the golden era of cartoons that had actual plotlines 😢 I loved this Video essay of yours as well as your EAH one!! You gained a sub
The only seasons I've watched all the way through were the first three. I've been trying to make my way through the whole show, but I have yet to manage.
The original series basically ended after S3 and the first movie. Everything after that feels more like various "what if?" stories to varying degrees of success. The second movie and the World of Winx spinoff were the best things that came post S3 & 1st movie.
I find it ironic that Nickelodeon decided to "water down" Winx by having season 5 underwater, which makes me wanna cry because Aisha's my favorite and having a season that focused on each non-Bloom girl and their respective worlds and character arcs would have been hype (like season 3 extended edition). I remember when MLP: Friendship is Magic first premiered and I initially didn't like the art style and thought they were going to cocomelon the whole franchise, but I gave it a chance and it lasted seven seasons and multiple films. This is what I'm seriously hoping for with the Winx reboot, so long as it's faithful to what we know and love about it I can deal with the change in animation.
Saw in the opening with u scrolling through Yr TH-cam feed, and saw so many of similar creators that I watch too ❤❤❤. Wasn't expecting to see Faline on there, n Lisa
Some corrections Season 4 wasn't made with Nickelodeon, not sure where you got that info. Season 4 and the second movie was all Rainbow and they came out in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The Nickelodeon deal started in 2011 and the recap specials and Season 5 were the start of Nickelodeon co-producing.
i remember the nickelodeon debut of winx club where they had the one hour special that basically had to condense down like the first one or two seasons so they could catch up to the original :")
I remember watching Land Before Time and Loving that movie even if it made me sad. Kids will be okay dealing with things as long as their parents are there to TALK with them about it.
I remember woundering after them getting their 4th or 5th transformation type, why they always need new ones and "forget" the old ones existing. I got really annoyed over the sudden new types that seemed to simply pop into existence and never got spoken about before.
While the nick era have its issues and sabotaged winx in the end , there are some positives to it: -For one thing , it’s one of the few dubs that made the show more known to a newer audience and introduce said audience to the show -The Nick dub has the best cast of voices that brought more umph to the characters than cinelume dub (Romi dames is the best) -Season five, despite its issues , is the last truly decent of winx and the last time the writers tried to make engaging story transformation and gave some characters some time to shine (This season deserves some love) -Season 5’s soundtrack is among the best So yeah the Nick era and dub have it’s flaws but it’s not all bad that came from it
4kids or bust! The voice acting was my fav, even if the script changed way too much. I'll always wonder, though: ehat if Disnry aired Winx Club instead of Nickelodeon (assuming they never sued Iginio over W.I.T.C.H.). I imagine it'd be bigger in America, and we'd probably get good additional seasons.
I remember Winx getting really weird around season 4 and now I know why, I don't know how old I was when s4 was airing in my country but everybody just stopped talking about it and it just became this one goofy show I'd watch when there's nothing better to watch which were extremely rare occasions, heck even s4 was somewhat enjoyable with the change of pace on earth but after that I just didn't understand what the show was about anymore
After reading some stuff about the reboot ( yes some were leaks) it already sounds 10 times better than season 5 to 8 so there’s hopes Winx will be able to shine again
I do wonder if the creative choice of having Bloom under Darkar’s control was because of how powerful Bloom is. She’s at that point, the last fairy from Domino and the fairy of the dragon flame. Darkar could have gone after anyone, but he chose Bloom.
Another thing in the miss magix episode that some comments said is kind of wow was when the trix are laughing stormys outfit kind of shows a lot and they changed that. That was also a common complaint about the outfits and a few were changed through the series
I grew up with 4Kids Winx Club - still was one of my favorite shows despite all the narrative changes But what it turned into was so sad. I am hopeful for the reboot because Winx deserves its story to be told with love and authenticity! ❤
As someone who was smart for a kindergardener I think many modern shows are too stupid to gain an audience. I watched old shows as an 5-9 year old that were filled with deaths or other themes in every episode and did I get it? Heck no, maybe a part of it. But I found the same shows being entertaining later in live or atleast I could tell they have charm that is beyond my nostalgia. While many shows for kids kids when I was the targeted audience used to have some kind of lessons and not complicated plot. Now I feel like they are just annoyingly overstimulating, otherwise boring and the characters are made dumb on purpose as if they were all Cat Valentine from later seasons or if they are smart then there will be 1 total nerd character talking crap that kids won't understand anyways. Honestly Paw Patrol used to annoy me but when I have Paw Patrol that my young cousins love and the other option would be whatever crap on nickelodeon. I will just play them paw patrol that they wanted. Eventually start indoctrination with my fav shows. Now excuse me but you put Buka there (or whatever the name is in English) so I'm leaving to watch some Moomins, I want to hear that harmonica that's been stuck in my head once again.
One of my big winx club memories was trying to watch it and realizing the version i was watching was from a different dubbing company- I sat there like “well wtf is this- Tecna is supposed to be British it just makes sense why isn’t she British anymore???”
I remember as a child that I loved the show at some point it was not possible in my country to watch the early seasons so I watched loops on 7 and 6 and rare occasions also 5 I didn't connect to the animation of 8 so I didn't get to see it but I always remembered that Musa \ has a more significant role in the previous seasons that Lila (Aisha) felt like a woman. A minor and characterless character and the series is still remembered as a good
I miss the winx a lot. Fate - a winx saga was so disappointing I didn't even attempt to watch season 2 and everything past season 3 has always felt bad to me and for a long time I couldn't tell exactly why, even though I loved seasons 1-3. (as a ginger) I always looked for ginger characters in media that were cool and with urgency and in the early 2000s there was only a handful of them. So naturally I flocked to Bloom. And I loved her. I loved the entire cast. I remember a couple of years ago I heard about Layla's (Aisha's) Boyfriend dying and I was so confused, because I couldn't remember that had happened. And well... it happened at a point I had long since broken with the show. Also, I grew up with the German dub and that one was actually really good
Weirdly enough, my first exposure to Winx Club was the RAI English Dub when the first 2 seasons were up on Netflix, only to eventually get a DVD from a local library with episodes of Season 4. I didn't even know about any 4k dub until I found TH-cam videos that brought up how bad it was and how annoying some of the 4k-exclusive songs were. Coincidentally, I was trying to figure out if there was any method to the madness of why I preferred Season 1 to any of the later seasons I had seen or heard about.
Winx clubbbbbb❤. I loved to role play with my friends everybody had their favs like aisha, musa, flora and so on and itwas sooo fun. I think i even had winx club stickers
As someone who grew up on the 4Kids version, I loved how genuine and heartfelt it was. I thought that a lot of its moments with the villains were terrifying and led to a lot of identity crises which were resolved with pondering and reconnecting with one's roots and loved ones. Granted, I never saw the original version, so I don't truly know what I'm missing, and when I tried I found an unbearably shallow French dub. Still, I was looking in the post-nickelodeon era, so I'm hoping that said French dub wasn't the original. Does anyone know how to find the original? I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I'd like to see it. I can speak a bit of French and Spanish, so I have options if the original versions are scarce.
I remember that when the first seasons of Winx aired in my country, many adults would critique it online for neing inappropriate for kids, mainly because they considered it too hyperfeminine and promoting anorexia. Oddly enough, as I grew older I noticed that they began giving their more tomboyish characters (Techa, Musa, Layla) a lot more feminine traits than before which I really disliked. The art style change that eerily resembled the Top Model drawing books too was horrendous to me. It all seemed way too softened and bland while they could've made impactful changes to the narrative that were more progressive and suitable for a younger audience. I also hated the fact they didn't stick to the obvious ending to the show of Bloom finding her birth parents, but instead dragged it out and revived Daphne for crying out loud. It's always unfortunate to see corporate issues get in the way of the creation of a show, especially when the creators seem so passionate about what they want to bring to the table. I would love to see a complete retelling of the show with a stronger, stable narrative steucture honestly!
One thing that I don’t see anyone really mention was that around the time that Nickelodeon picked up Winx Club (September 2010) they also acquired another franchise, Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles. These two franchises were the first shows to be considered Nicktoons that were developed and aired outside of the Nick umbrella. They were developed simultaneously at Nick Studios where unlike Winx Club, for their version of TMMT, Nick also acknowledged a secondary audience of teens and adults. TMMT also had an advantage over Winx since it was more established and successful as an brand in the US. Nick would have to less legwork in terms of marketing because it was already well known to at least the older viewers they were targeting. It’s unfortunately not surprising why Nickelodeon dumped the show with infrequent airdates starting in Season 5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a massive hit for the network. Winx Club’s ratings never met the promise of the early specials.
This is why I would 1. Never make anything for kids 2.NEVER work with another company, especially a big one. All independent. If I'm going to make my art, it's going to be MY way.
I didn't know that there was also such an aspect involved. I only knew that Nickelodeon has not been the best host for Winx Club because they have tried several times to DMCA takedown Winx Club Nordics' official TH-cam channel, which has been the archive of the Nordic dubbings of the series that are worth preservation because they are translated directly from the original language of the series and not from an English dubbing as is usually the case with animations. Although most of the takedowns have focused on the episodes of the first season at least as far as I'm aware. But still, what makes those takedowns weird is that it's an official channel.
You know how you go into different internet aesthetics? I was wondering if you could go into internet "age regression" and how it's perceived; i know it's not labeled a "core", but i feel as if it's on its way there, and it also has lost some it's meaning throughout it's small internet popularity. You don't have to at all, just an idea for what i think would be a good video. If you read this comment, thank you for reading it, i know there are a lot of comments on your videos and i appreciate your videos so much!
I remember being around 10 - 12 and watching winx season 6 and thinking "What is this? This is so boring" and just stopped watching and just completely forgetting the show after that. Kids need media that will entertain them and make them think and that wasn't it. As mentioned earlier I also just forgot about the show until a few years ago and seeing how much it lost of what made the old seasons work saddens me. I think the new seasons could have worked if it continued in the same tone and the winx growing up along the audience as season 1 - 4 did. If you want to see an example of what I mean I'd suggest watching Unicorn of War's rewrites of season 5 and 6.
While I'm excited to see where the reboot will go I am a bit scared of it as well bc of the designs (especially fairies) as in my opinion they are not that charming. And as an artist myself I'm scared about the rumours that they have used AI for the concept arts and the "fake drawing" they did in the reveal trailer. This is all just my personal opinion though and just like Fate I will give it a shot
11:58 they probably wanted it more straight up because it undermine the low-key sexual tension that was building up to that low-key BDSM looking ahh moment (that they probably got more sanitized to) making a more direct message on grooming
One of those shows that I used to watch religiously as a kid during the heyday but would never even let anyone else know (it and Totally Spies because obviously boy's aren't supposed to be into "girl stuff"). Of course, being at that age where girls stop being "icky" at the time factored in because I've been surprised by how many times in 2000s nostalgia groups you'll see guys gushing about the show and admitting that they never told anyone else they watched them. Actually went back to rewatch a couple of years ago, and the dub is absolutely painful at times. I tell you this much, no ten year old boy, assuming he even watches television and isn't glued to an ipad, would be caught dead even knowing the later seasons existed. It's not every day you make a show aimed at girls that boys actually want to watch.
Im sorry but i fisagree. 4kids us much more enjoyable snd fun. Lord darkar is much more iconic. Hes threatening znd he has a witty personality. The original lord darkar has no charisma. I also don't think adding romantic ploy line with lord darkar znd bloom isn't much of a big deal. Heck avalon and Bloom get shipmates in the original. So why is lord darkar and Bloom different?
Wasn’t season four produced solely by Rainbow as a means of capitalizing off of the first movie? It basically served as an unplanned epilogue. I believe season five was the first season co-produced. It was the first season to be solely dubbed by Nickelodeon (season 4 was only dubbed by Cinelume in English speaking regions prior to the Nick dub). Season 4 still follows the storyline of the first three seasons (the members were growing older). Season 5 is where they started both retconning and incorporating the older season plot elements. Like, things were supposed to have happened and yet they didn’t… This carried on for season 6 and I believe season 7 (it’s been a while since I watched that one).
I can definitely see why Nickelodeon decided to screw off the show once Harvey Beaks and The Loud House came in. The show was failing and failing in the ratings compared to their other animated content (especially SpongeBob). Plus, the show's artstyle didn't fit in for the brand. Also, airing the show during the afternoon was a bad move.
Maturing is realizing that even though I was honestly kind of embarrassed as a child for liking Pretty Rhythm, an anime about figure skating that focuses on three girls who are school age, was honestly not a terrible show, considering the fact that I liked the characters, the fashion was good, dark topics were touched at times, and the plot was interesting. And even though the show did have a game/toys, it wasn't constantly shoved in your face and they were honestly kind of cute.
I swear every early 2000s and farther back kids know that the whole “it doesn’t have to be good if it’s just for kids” is utter BS. I am so sick of hearing that lamebrain excuse for not making quality content anymore when most of these… people -_- are fully capable of doing it. And seeing how many not good reboots or remakes of some of those really good old cartoons nowadays it’s making me fear for this winx club reboot even more. Want a good example of butchered reboots look at monster high.
One of the biggest issues that kept Winx from hitting as big in NA that it did in Europe was, simply, our execs & taste makers just... don't respect media for girls. It's why 4Kids dumbed it down and Nick ran it basically as a pre-school show. Ours is just not a culture that appreciates magical girl media, and it's an uphill battle to change that. At least the Winx reboot looks to keep the magical girl roots of its original better than the W.I.T.C.H. reboot, with its boring gym wear "costumes". Hopefully it'll be localized by somewhere that at least respects it & its audience, but my expectations are unfortunately low.

Nickelodeon because it was the one that got me into the winx
I swear people *(Cough Hollywood executives and corporations)*act like kids don’t deserve more out of cartoons and animation.
*Zaslav joined the conversation*
adults in general don't think of kids as people. they are objects, property, like pets. of course they wouldn't care about giving kids shows they actually connect with. just something to distract them like throwing the dog a bone.
Yeah because it cost money. It is always a race to the bottom.
They’re making sure to keep em dumb
@@pixieinx Content farmers in a nutshell.
They do tackle these issues but I think it's because kids now have access to anything they spend more time on gaming or youtube than actual cartoons

I can see why people miss the Golden Age of Animation alot more.
I just want to stay in bed and watch tv all day, i dont want to have to work or be uncomfortable at all."
this is someone who also refuses to learn some things that are required to succeed in their career choice because they think their gross. its just sad. my mom was always heavily against participation awards, now i see why.
I’m 23 now
Making things too "safe" actually hinders a child's development and results in a poorly-adjusted adult.
(I know its controversial to like that dub but its still my favourite version.)
Fun fact, i was babysitting my nephew a couple years back and even he was fixated by the show.
And s4 is still 98% hand drawn despite a jarring puppet rigging animation they tried out for a few episodes.
@@keetard I feel like the puppet rigging in that season was pretty well-made compared to later on. Kinda reminds me of Wayside's early episodes in a way.
Season 4 changed artstyles like every 2 episodes but I still love it despite its flaws and the kinda sloggish first half of it

Winx club was the reason I started drawing all those years ago, seeing how far it's fallen is so saddening
I loved magical girl stuff when I was a teenager and I enjoyed watching Winx Club. I remember my mum criticising it though because it was "for babies" - it was, of course, the English version. I do envy those who got to enjoy the original European versions but I'm glad I got to see what I did 😊
Same I like cartoons and girly stuff

Also...if Amore hadn't used a true love blossom in the bouquet the whole Princess trio of Princesses would have been doomed and they were not doing so well anyway because Stella was drained to the point of...demise...and if that had happened...well we would have found out about whether or not villified fairies is a thing.
actually season 4 was not coproduced with nickelodeon, it was made in 2009 by rainbow and rai, nick started coproducing the series at season 5 with the nick specials from the first 2 seasons and season 3&4 having a new water down dub, i’m really sorry for people from english speaking countries cause the european dubs are so good and faithful to the original and to this day there’s not actual good english winx dub…
thank you for correcting me! There are so many different versions of Winx it's difficult to keep up lmao
I could see that version going "Musa, I'm happy you're getting to sing a lot more this season, but you should really save your voice for your solo nights and if your solo career takes off, you need a replacement and it's either Stella, Flora or me" and Musa picks Bloom because Flora's too shy and Stella's too...indignant.
ahh, winx...a show that had me in a chokehold for the first few years of my childhood. my country also dubbed it (slovenia) and i watched it in that language, tho i do speak italian as well. fun fact, a slovenian music group, foxy teens, made a song called "Me Smo Winx" (we are winx), inspired by the show
Omg sem skoraj pozabila na Me smo Winx! S sestrično sve se naučili cel ples za to pesem 😅😂
I recommend you watch the Rai English version (although it's clunky at times lmao) it's like night and day
Fun fact the rai English was made in Quebec company called Cinèlume
The cinelume dub is on TH-cam uploaded by the official winx club TH-cam channel
I will say one good thing about 4kids for Winx was the theme song. It still stuck in my head to this day.
Disney has some nerve to claim copyright when all their Disney princesses originated off of other peoples books!
The weirdcore video helped me explain the reason I gravitate so much towards it to many of my friends and also my headmates [I am part of a System/Am Plural due to childhood trauma] and I am glad to have found your channel ! ^^
Season 5 & 6 were good with flaws, season 7... yeah let's pretend it didn't exist
It’s so bad that I love to watch it lmao 😭😭😭
Great videos, informative with a good thoughtful commentary. Subbed immediately.
I totally agree regarding the quality of kid shows… the shows I have seen as a kid formed me and contributed to make me who I am today, it’s sad thinking there is less and less good quality shows for children nowadays
Flora was voiced by Liko & Sypha from Pokémon Horizons and Castlevania Alejandra Reynoso
The video essay is great and the drawing is so beautiful óvò
I'm glad you like it
loved this video essay, thank you :)
0:12 YES! YES!!! MY MOST FAVORITE LINE OF ALL TIME!!! 🤣
Yeah. The first four seasons were the best. I wish Nickelodeon just left the show alone and stick with their own Nicktoons.
Subscribed 10 seconds into the intro🎉 I felt that
I'm italian, and I remember going to the rainbow park! I know it's off topic, but it had many references to winx :3
also, I used to absolutely love rainbow, I watched most of their shows!
I think they removed the Winx stuff :(
@im_a_simp_for_Daphne i think they removed the park actually☠️
@@amia_rushii noooo I wanted to go :(((((
@im_a_simp_for_Daphne i knoww:(:(
I'm happy that I've only watched the original version of Winx Club
i was born 1995 and the winx club I was I introduced too was the four kids version good times good times
Omg I’m 9 years younger than you I feel so young 😭😭😭
Same…but I was born in 92 😅
Saw in the opening with u scrolling through Yr TH-cam feed, and saw so many of similar creators that I watch too ❤❤❤.
Wasn't expecting to see Faline on there, n Lisa
You have impeccable taste then
@@juno_moth why tq ☺️, you too
Some corrections
Season 4 wasn't made with Nickelodeon, not sure where you got that info. Season 4 and the second movie was all Rainbow and they came out in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The Nickelodeon deal started in 2011 and the recap specials and Season 5 were the start of Nickelodeon co-producing.
2:13 THOMAS MENTIOEND I really do recommend his content he is a great writer and really funny
i remember the nickelodeon debut of winx club where they had the one hour special that basically had to condense down like the first one or two seasons so they could catch up to the original :")
While the nick era have its issues and sabotaged winx in the end , there are some positives to it:
-For one thing , it’s one of the few dubs that made the show more known to a newer audience and introduce said audience to the show
-The Nick dub has the best cast of voices that brought more umph to the characters than cinelume dub (Romi dames is the best)
-Season five, despite its issues , is the last truly decent of winx and the last time the writers tried to make engaging story transformation and gave some characters some time to shine (This season deserves some love)
-Season 5’s soundtrack is among the best
So yeah the Nick era and dub have it’s flaws but it’s not all bad that came from it
4kids or bust!
Woah
I remember this show from my childhood omg
I loved it so much ❤
After reading some stuff about the reboot ( yes some were leaks) it already sounds 10 times better than season 5 to 8 so there’s hopes Winx will be able to shine again
Nickelodeon didn’t do season 4. They made the specials and dubbed over seasons 3+4 and the movies. Seasons 5 + 6 however is Nick
I remember I loved watching this like, a decade ago.
I would have loved both Winx Club and W.i.t.c.h as a kid if they could live together in harmony
I grew up with 4Kids Winx Club - still was one of my favorite shows despite all the narrative changes
But what it turned into was so sad. I am hopeful for the reboot because Winx deserves its story to be told with love and authenticity! ❤
Winx became ugly 3d and monster high became ugly 3d only because of Nickelodeon, it's all Nick's fault
A minor and characterless character and the series is still remembered as a good
as an Italian (saw the original version growing up AND rewatched it later. and then tried to see it in English...) i couldn't agree more.
I want old winx back AAAA HAHAHAH
I'm a little fearful that the new season of Miraculous will get the new animation treatment.
we'll see.. hopefully not :(
I miss the winx a lot.
Despite the English 4Kids version being garbage, this was still one of my and my friends' favorite shows! I hope to see the series get some justice
I love this show as a kid
Winx clubbbbbb❤. I loved to role play with my friends everybody had their favs like aisha, musa, flora and so on and itwas sooo fun. I think i even had winx club stickers
Growing for two decades? Nah, its been forever
This is why I would
1. Never make anything for kids
2.NEVER work with another company, especially a big one.
20 years old WHAT DO U MEAN 20 YEARS OLD?!
Adults ruin everything
Season 1-3 were amazing
great video! ❤
Thank you!!
There is nothing wrong with using ai in concept art💀
11:58 they probably wanted it more straight up because it undermine the low-key sexual tension that was building up to that low-key BDSM looking ahh moment (that they probably got more sanitized to) making a more direct message on grooming
They seriously need to stop 3D from 2D series. It fucks everything up.
I would love to see a video about Huntik. Dose anybody remember that show?
And Aisha is her original tbh idk why it was Layla
Gosh, I still like the Winx Club from 2004. I did like the voice acting from the Winx Club, but I am open to see the Winx club story told right ✨🧚♀
I can definitely see why Nickelodeon decided to screw off the show once Harvey Beaks and The Loud House came in.
4Kids TV once made Winx Club legendary once..
