What a display of pure class from John Stockton.
So many people, their playing days long behind them, would have leapt at the easy opportunity to pad their legacy a little by effectively saying "it took deceit to beat me when I was at my best". Not only did Stockton decline a first chance to do so, he turned down two more from someone clearly not out to judge him for inflammatory commentary.
I am not saying that Dan Patrick is wrong to seek out the words which would gain him so much publicity, nor am I criticizing the choices of anyone who would have felt the need to share that they were robbed of a sporting contest. It might even be true that Stockton was indeed robbed in such a way.
What I am saying, however, is that it was a sign of great integrity that he chose to let the past be the past. By allowing the score against him to stand in a decades-old rivalry, he affirmed the [EDIT: VALUE] of a worthy opponent's victory, and he seemed to indicate that he was not himself bitter or stuck in the past in any way. That, to me, is integrity.
On top of that, Eisen's memory of his interaction with his son at the time makes me feel as though this is a man who deserves whatever accolades he has garnered by virtue of being a human being of character where it counts the most - in educating the next generation. John Stockton did his job without complaining, and did not stand by when others tried to cheapen the cause he stood for by trying to complain on his behalf.
I could do far worse than follow his example here on not letting ego take the lead, and hope it has led him to the life such behaviour deserves.

Stockton was not only a phenomenal player, but so intelligent and had such a natural feel for the game. He always reminded me of a smaller, slightly-faster version of Larry Bird. I love listening to his interviews. I think he interviewed better than any player I've ever listened to.

Swaggy Jee I have to disagree. John leads the league in steals and assists by far, no one comes close. John has the stats to prove it. He was selected over Isaiah in the Olympics. John Stockton is the greatest point guard to ever play the game.

Samson I agree about Stockton being better than Isiah, but the reason Stockton was selected over him for the Olympics is because it was during the rivalry between Jordan and Isiah Thomas, and Jordan refused to play with Thomas.
