    Scout: "This Stockton dude looks pretty good, we'll take him"
    Jazz fans: "Who the hell is that? Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"
    Jazz fans 20 years later: "Stockton and Malone are legends of the NBA"

      Jack Gardner (former Utah Utes coach) found him and told Layden to draft him if anyone wants to know how he was discovered. He also was a last cut on the’84 Olympic team (along with some guy named Malone). The one chosen by Bobby Knight.

    That draft class was loaded: Micheal Jordan, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton, Alvin Robertson, Otis Thorpe and Kevin Willis. Damn.

    • @1survivor566
      @1survivor566 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sam Perkins, Sam Bowie, Michael Cage, Vern Fleming, Jerome Kersey were other notable players in that draft to have solid NBA careers. Rick Carlisle who went on to become an NBA champion coach was also selected that year. And the greatest Brazilian basketball player ever and possibly the best player to never play in the NBA, Oscar Schmidt was selected with the 131st pick.

      @FF18Cloud 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1 Survivor surprised no one questioned you saying Bowie had a solid career...
      like, he was a solid contributor despite the injuries but he was injured a lot...

    • @1survivor566
      @1survivor566 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FF18Cloud He was injured often but he had a solid career when he wasn't hurt. Career averages of 10.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG and 1.8 BPG over 10 NBA seasons. That's not bad. And he had a few seasons where he averaged 15-16 points, 7-8 rebounds and a couple blocks. Those are borderline all star numbers. He just had the misfortune of being drafted before Michael Jordan. If he was taken in any other draft in any other situation he would have been looked at differently.

    That was a cool video, but I do think Sackton plays the "What who me" card a bit too much. I saw the 30 for 30 doc about his draft class and he said how he was surprised he was drafted and that he was entertaining thoughts of playing in Europe. In this video he clearly states that he was expecting to be drafted in the first round by the Blazers. He averaged over 20 ppg and was invited to try out for the Olympic team, so I think he had a pretty good idea of how talented he was. Also in this video he talks about just wanting to be a good back up to the starter, when in actuality I think he knew he was gonna run that team and leave the other guy looking for work.

    • @cpdurham
      @cpdurham 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +steveditko1 Serious? I think if someone consistently plays the "what who me" card for several decades, then it ceases to be a "card" and denotes actual humility, gratitude, and incredulity. In the video he said "rumors were flying" about Portland in the first or second round-he never said he "expected" to be drafted in the 1st round. Every year people fall out of the first round, or fall out of the draft completely, despite "expectations." Sure, he wanted to be drafted early, but it's only smart to have some contingency plans (Europe). The bottom line is, the guy's demeanor and attitude NEVER wavered, from when he was a just-drafted kid out of college (to this video), all the way to when he was a perennial all-star, dream teamer, all-time assist/steals leader, and hall of famer. He never changed, man. I just don't see how you can imply that the guy is inauthentic.

    To this day, I don't understand how a guy who looks like the 40 year old virgin went on to break records in the NBA. I regret so much that I never watched this guy play.

    ranked #2 stealer in nba history for steals and top ten for a lot of others.. Stuck with a losing team his whole career..

      +egje EORWIJ 1st all time in assists and steals, plus the jazz made the playoffs every year he was on the team, including making the finals twice. so everything you just said is bull shit.

      I spent 10 minutes researching the guy.. go figure. I'm not a sports fan was just interested briefly.
      Sticking with a losing team his whole career isn't BS. Jazz never went anywhere and still haven't..

      +egje EORWIJ So he was stuck with a losing team his entire career because he hasn't gone anywhere? You're basically saying he and Karl Malone (teammate), Reggie Miller (Pacers), Patrick Ewing (Knicks), and Charles Barkely (76ers/Phoenix) were all stuck on a losing team because they couldn't win a championship? Fuck off, they (list above) were all great and outstanding players that could've easily won a championship, but it's because of these 4 teams that defeated them and everyone else, Pistons (89-90), Bulls (91-93, 96-98), Rockets (94-95) and Spurs (99). If you're going to research into a sport you don't know, while others are passionate about it don't make half-ass statements you don't know jack shit about.

      championship is the whole gole of the game and stats come second. It's not to maintain a salary or stay in the game..

      +Camren Hansen "would the Jazz " Nice try. I bet money you rely on a spell checker but your grammar still exposes you.. The Jazz still haven't done crap the stats are everywhere go look. Argue all you want it doesn't take knowing the game to understand fourth-grade statistics..
