    The Harlem Globetrotters started out as a professional basketball team and in 1939 participated in the first professional basketball championship, losing to the Harlem Rens in the final game. The next year the Globetrotters won the tournament. They changed the sport when, after spending all day traveling to play a game they arrived tired and worn out. During the game the teams best dribbler took over the game while the rest of the team sat down to take a break. It was 1 against 5 and for an entire period he dribbled circles around the other team, they couldn't get the ball away from him. Eventually other teams started using the same tactic which, in 1950, lead to the lowest scoring game in Pro Basketball history, 19 to 18. The next year the league introduced the shot clock.
    The Harlem Globetrotters had some great players, one of which was Wilt Chamberlain. He played two years (1956-58) at the University of Kansas, after which he joined the Harlem Globetrotters for a year (1958-59). He went to the NBA in 1959, playing with the Philadelphia Warriors. Other outstanding Globetrotters were Reece “Goose” Tatum, Marques Haynes, Clarence Wilson, “Meadowlark” Lemon, Herb “Geese” Ausbie, and Lynette Woodard, the first woman to play for the team.

    They originally started in Chicago. The owner chose the Harlem name because at that time Harlem was like a cultural mecca for Blacks. So the owner of the Globetrotters thought associating them with Harlem would add something extra to the team.

    Maybe you can't respect something that's not your reality..... But those Harlem globetrotters were the best ball players of that day!!! Since white people wasn't letting blacks play in mostly all white NBA they help pave the way like so many....it was a show but the skills was real those shots did go in on time

      There was a time The Harlem Globetrotters were THE BEST basketball team on the damn planet. Many of their players chose to play outside the NBA rather than deal with the racism and humiliation they would have faced playing in the league. Anyone who thinks Pete Maravich and Bob Cousy were the dribblers in the day, I DARE you to compare their ball handling skills to that of Fred ""Curly" Neal, Marques Haynes or Bob "Showboat " Hall.

      +Ms B these commercial films were mass produced, tightly edited. usually 5 min or less with no sound. often times the original box if it's in good condition is worth more than the film. think of these films as edited vhs or dvd's without audio! what would they be worth? Nuthin'. I digitized this film, added the soundtrack for youtube. I sold the film a # of years ago for about 10 bucks.

    It's not that vintage. It's not like the Globetrotters go back to Charlie Chaplin's or Louis Armstrong's best work in the 1920s. This footage, featuring the dribbling of Marques Haynes, wouldn't have been made prior to 1950. It could have been extra, unedited footage from either of the Globetrotters' feature films (1951, 1954).

      Antwan Edwards The Globetrotters were the best basketball team in the world. They beat the 1948 Champions (The Lakers) 61-59. and again in a re-match, 49-45. very cool.

    • @tubengagements
      @tubengagements  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Antwan Edwards It was NEVER about the game but their ability to ball handle. You can't dropkick a ball, line up in a football stance and go long for the bomb, jump on another players shoulders, etc in a real NBA game. It was about showmanship talent & ability, these guys could dazzle the court like no one had ever seen before, especially in the early days, they were are still are goodwill ambassadors, their talent often surpassed most NBA players but they also had some of the greatest NBA players play for them and yes in a real game they could often hold their own.
