Do you know what causes the play online viewer to launch just as a black screen. you can hear the sound but the box area stays black and you can't see anything?

@@shperax Im having this issue also, just did it for myself with no issues, trying to do it for my gf who has FFXI through steam, the launcher is just going to the black box.

Well done sir. I have been dabbling around on FFXI private servers for a few years now and was curious to try the improved graphics. It's absolutely worth doing and it's like a breath of fresh air for a game I still love. Thanks for the guide/easy install process!

Thanks for this. Immensely helpful in getting this set up. Was losing focus because of how, uh, unfocused and blurry all the vanilla textures are from the detail limitations they had to struggle with back then in development.

Issue: FFXI Closes right after PlayOnline closes
Solution: Try changing the adapter DGVoodoo uses. Try the All Adapters option.
Issue: Slow FPS?
Solution: Try disabling the GloomA0 and RadiantGI shaders in Reshade by pressing the ~ key and unchecking the boxes.

i encountered an issue. my comment on said issue keeps getting deleted not sure if its getting deleted because of the screenshot or what. I narrowed the issue down. DGVoodoo/Reshade will corrupt your registry files if for some reason you have this game installed through steam. (i had installed it years ago, when i built my new computer, before their new installer had been released). you will want to do a full reinstall using the new Install files from Playonline's website instead. Copy your FFXI User folder before you do to save all of your settings.

Thanks for the graphics upgrade package. I'm now able to use the resources of my PC to make FFXI look great! These upgrades fully brought FFXI off the PS2 and onto a PC for me.
Great guide! Using the config plugin to uncap fps and using the Nvidia control panel to limit the game to 60fps improved frame consistency for me

9:25 I appreciate this change from last year's video. I use a high dpi monitor so setting my UI scaling for everything on Windows 10 to 100% was a no-go for me. I wouldn't be able to read anything. This is a much better way to exempt an application from UI scaling.
Very well put together video. I've been watching more videos regarding modern FFXI, but unsure if I want to come back. I played on Eden (a private 2007-era server) for about a year and a half and thoroughly enjoyed myself. That server is what I remembered of the game since I originally quit in 2007. Everyone I've spoken with who plays the game now or recently played say it's nothing like that game from 2007. So, this gives me pause even though I am curious about how all the old jobs play now. I know I could just sub for a month or take advantage of a call back campaign, but we all know this isn't a game that's easy to jump into.
As much as it's true that it's "nothing like the old game", it's also not true in many ways as well, especially these days.
Yes, a LOT has changed. But also a lot hasn't, and I would honestly say the majority of the game is more enjoyable and better today than it ever was back the past.
The vast majority of what you likely considered the high points of the game - The combat system, the exp parties, the difficulty of endgame fights, the social aspects - are all still generally there.
What's gone are the things like competing over a once to twice/week pop. Dynamis scheduling. Being unable to do literally anything by yourself. Excessive time gates for every little thing.

One thing I would like to add: with the laptop I am currently on (Asus ROG G14 2023), POL would fail to load into FFXI when the best GPU option was manually selected. Selecting "All of them" solved the issue, and the correct GPU was being accurately assigned by Nvidia/Windows when the application opened. Took me a bit of trial and error to sort that out!
Yep this is something new that has started happening on some machines that have been released in the last year. What you've done is the correct work around.

Is the Reshade version based on 5.00+ Series? Since there is one big improvement compared to 4.00 series which has no screenshot freeze whenever taking a reshade screenshot.

It should look like it does in the video. Make sure you did the XIVIew step properly. You should be getting an overwrite message when you try to paste the rom folders. If it's still not good, try reinstalling again from the source here github.com/KenshiDRK/XiView

Took alot of trial and error but your videos helped alot getting this to work on the Wings private server. The steps are very similar except anytime your modding pol.exe you are in the wings ashita bootmod folder. And Plugins like xiview and xipivot, etc have to come from wings friendly sources in their discord tech support channel. Mip mapping on is required to not have the millions of dots texture look but then you get performance dips near auction houses. I know the videos were made for playonline version, just commenting to say that with some tweaks I did manage to get just about everything on Wings.

Hi NextG! A question: why you replaced DAT files instead of using XiPivot to "temporarily" overwrite them? You can load multiple packs with it (view, vision, HD pack)
And, did you have the chance to try Mapster? It's great!

Hey! Thought I'd give an update from when I last commented a month or two ago. Turns out the integrated graphics card was the issue with Reshade. After getting a dedicated GPU and installing ReShade 5.0.0 it's working perfectly! Thanks for your help!

You would need to increase the UI scale in windower, note this will increase the size of all parts of the UI and not just the macro boxes.

Thanks for the wonderful guide! I was wondering though, you recommend a 1080 graphics card. Do you recommend it for playing at 1080p or 4k? I would assume that you would only need that kind of GPU if you plan to play at 4k, but unsure as I am, I decided to ask, even though the question might be dumb to begin with. There are no dumb questions so no worries. 1080 graphics card is recommended for 1080p or 4k. It's mainly needed for the reshade effects and bigger textures. Note though this is just the minimum I've tested it on, I've heard of people running it on far lower GPU's without problem. A 780 card for instance I've heard runs things just fine.

However, I've run into a small issue where my Home button doesn't seem to do anything other then reset my camera to default behind position, everything else works fine so any tips/ideas for fixing this?
It does share the key with camera reset so the camera thing is normal. However if your not seeing any difference that tells me reshade isn't working. To confirm this, press the ` or ~ key next to the 1 in the top left of the keyboard. This should make the reshade menu come up, does it?
Thank you for this very good guide. I got a question about the XIView though. The link pearl icons next to the character names look as if they are a bit stretched (compared to the ones in your video, which look perfectly round). The names look fine to me, but I think I notice some stretch at the stars too. I am playing on 2560x1440, aspect ratio 16/9.
Make sure your setup to run 16x9 in the ffxi in game menu and it should look fine.

Has anyone encountered an issued with your characters gear not changing when switching gear or changing jobs in their MH?
Thanks, Yes this is normal and due to the dressup addon. This makes it so you don't blink as you change gear which can be annoying, it also means you will only see a visual change in your gear when you zone.
Love the content... wondering if there will be a variant in regards to the Private Server Horizonxi that drop 17 Dec 2022? wondering if your "all-in-one-" pack works with the packs they have implemented as well. Just a thought. Thank again for what you do!
Sadly no intentions of playing on private servers. Whether or not these things work is normally based upon the creators of the servers. If they don't allow the use of windower 4 that will limit what you can do and you may just be left with having to overwrite the actual game file textures.

No watermark, no Reshade and no way to activate it, no HD textures, no anything, it's as if i've spent the last five hours doing exactly nothing. I do not know where to even begin troubleshooting.
The only anomaly i noticed during install is that the widower folder had no folder for scripts to place the init.txt into, i thought creating one would bypass that issue but i'm not so sure now.
I hope someone can help me fix my mess, i'll check back in eight hours or so when i had some sleep.
*Edit* And lack of sleep was exactly the problem.
I was so tired yesterday that i missed a crucial step in your video, which was to launch the game from Widower instead of the vanilla launcher. Everything works as it should and it does indeed look gorgeous. Thank you for making this video!

Just one note about DgVoodoo2. I had the old 1.63.1 version which works fine but I tried updating anyway to the newest release. I copied the new files onto the old ones and deleted the DLLs I didn't need according to the video but it doesn't work (tried with the logo check). I tried running the new version with the old DLLs present and still no dice.
I then copied over my old version and it works fine again; this version includes the d3d8, D3DImm and DDraw files into the playonline folder. I have no idea what is causing this but I do remember having to copy some file into the system folder maybe? Could that be the issue with the new version? I don't remember which fil was it anyway and really don't want to mess anything up so I guess I'll just keep using the old version.
Just curious if anyone has had the same problems updating to a newer release of DGVoodoo2.
EDIT: So I pasted all the (x86) dll files from the new version into the playonline folder along with the exe and config and now it seems to work? I guess I needed all of them? Hopefully this helps someone else who's confused!
Same issue for me. I tested it on my Win11 PC. The watermark doesn't show with just the D3D8. If you copy all the rest of the files (9, DImm, and Draw) it loads up just fine. I'm not sure why and I haven't had any crashes either.
Im glad it worked for everyone else, but this left my game stuck on a black screen at launch. Followed the instructions word for word.
This can at times happen when your laptop has special display adapter needs. To resolve go into DGVoodoo settings and try to select other display adapters, one should allow your game to load without black screen.
Any chance you refresh this or windower video for 2024? Or more job guides? I know not a lot has changed but would love to see this from a fresh build startup with some many random single new players coming in and getting sent to look at this for game setup~
Thank you so much, what a wonderful video. I'm a returning player and found this to be an amazing upgrade for the original ffxi game. I have only one question and I'm sorry if you covered this in your video, if so I did not see it in multiple viewings. I'm a bard (yay) and following Funkworkz and his guide. In his guide he says that Xipivot and Xiview do not work together. Is there a fix for this? It's either one or the other it seems. Some of the icons are updated through the ffxi config I'm guessing if you choose #2 for icons. The icons for bard songs are the same as always. I'm considering reverting back to the original game graphics and re-installing everything. I wanted to see if you would recommend this or if you know of a solution. Again, thank you so much for ALL the hard work you have put in for all us who play ffxi!!
So what is meant by saying XiPivot doesn't work with XIview is that parts of XIview load before the XIpivot addon loads. This means if you try to load xiview through xipivot not evererything will load (such as icons). This is why XIView is the one thing we install manually into the FinalFantasyXI folders. Doing so should allow the icons you want to show. Note there are a few different icon packs out there other then xiview so if your looking for specific bard icons you may be looking for icons in a pack other then xiview, such as jean pauls icons.

Fantastic, sir. Very thorough. So now that my eyes no longer hurt, I was wondering if you knew anything about connecting a controller to the game. Despite going into the settings and getting my controller mapped out, it doesn't work through windower. Halp?
Hmmm, unsure on that one. I know the controller does work for many but I personally have never used one. Only option I see in windower for it is the always on controller option, which I don't think would have an effect on this. Enabling it in ffxi config should work as far as I know.
Hi thank you for doing this. I've installed everything up to Reshader. I find that my game can really be laggy now especially in parties in Crawler's Nest S. Do you have any suggestions?
If you have only gotten to the reshade part then the only thing that could really be slowing you down, is reshade. Try pressing the Home key which should turn effects off, does that fix the issue? If so we then need to turn off the shaders one by one and see which is giving you problems. Press Home to turn effects back on and then Press the ~ key to bring up the shader menu. Anything with a check mark is on, try turning them off one by one to see if it helps the lag. If it doesn't turn it back on and move onto next. Some setups have a hard time with some shaders.
That's a very great work! I just want you to know that I had a problem with my controller. Like everything was working fine in game before installing the addons then after that, my controller was working in FFXIConfig, in PlayOnline Viewer (if I activate the controller in POLConfig) but not in game.
I ended up following your 2021 tutorial and realized something. You doesn't have the D3D9.dll in your All In One Pack DGVoodoo folder. I'm maybe wrong but I think D3D9.dll is tied to Direct X 9 who I think is necessary for the controller to work ingame.
D3D9.dll was removed in the 2022 version specifically because the Windower team identified it as causing crashes in the game and they stated it was not needed. So no I'm not aware of any limitation directly related to this but if somehow your controller does require directx9 you may have an issue. I know many have gotten controllers to work with my 2022 without issue so confused as to why this is now an issue unless it's something specific to your controller setup.
Hello! I am running through the install process now and the NextHD setup does not have the patcher executable in the folder (or the credit.txt file) but the next lore does so I am using that instead. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Thanks for, super easy to follow! Just one question about the Ashenbubs stuff. Is that much different, is it worth doing? I've downloaded it but a bit confused on where to put the download file?
Ashenbubs will simply change the textures I haven't changed in this pack so it can make a difference in zones where not everything was updated, such as zones in the past. If you want to use it you want to put the folder from his pack in the same folder you put my NextHD or NextLore pack, make sure the folder is called Ashenbubs FFXI-XD or FFXI-SD depending on which of his packs you downloaded and then remove the // from before the pivot a ffxi-xd or pivot a ffxi-sd commands in the init.txt. This should allow it to load the next time you start the game.
@@NextGamesGuide Apologies for bothering you once again, but your All In One pack was so easy to get working when I have historically been horrific at modding XI, that I've now gotten greedy and I am interested in adding in Ashenbubs textures for the WoTG zones as well. Can you expand on this explanation? I downloaded the Ashenbubs pack from Nexus but it's just a single rar file, so no folder or init.txt file to edit. I know it's probably much simpler than I'm making it out to be, and for that I apologize for the 2nd time.
@@CurlyJohnson1992 No worries. So you will need to download an application called winrar as that's what he used to package his files. It will unzip those files into a folder for you. That folder should be called FFXI-XD or FFXI-SD. Move that under your xipivot/data/DAT's folder alongside the NextHD pack. Now the last thing you need to do is go into the init.txt file under scripts and remove the // from before the line at the end for the pack you downloaded, either FFXI-XD or FFXI-SD. Next time your game loads it should load his textures as well, you can confirm by typing //pivot s in game and it tell you which packs are loaded. Hope this helps!

You can replace the files we put inside of your windower 4 folder with the ones found under the backup folder in the following link and I think it should work. Note this will make the fonts go back to standard definition. github.com/KenshiDRK/XiView

Sorry to have to ask, but I just want to be sure of the HD Textures I'm downloading. I got Amelias "MegaPack" awhile back(Looks amazing btw, kudos). Is this HD pack link download you've included in this video a compilation of Amelia AND the rest? I only ask, because I noticed everything from Sandoria to South Gustaberg was def. HD Textures, but when I got into Bastok it was not. Did I do something wrong, or was the pack downloaded previously not the full Vanadiel pack? Sorry for the dumb question. ^_^);
Yes, the HD Pack includes Amelila's HD Textures (not the upscale pack) as well as the work of others such as Radial Arcana on FFXIAH.com. You may have different packs loading on top of eachtoher. Type //xipivot s in game and it will tell you which are loaded and in which order. Note that even with all the textures I change, there are still some in game that are not changed by my HD pack. For those you want to load Ashenbubs pack after my own to change those textures my pack does not. All that being said there is no reason Bastok shouldn't be HD, that's definitely in the pack.

Great guide, easy to follow. I'm having an issue that I hope you can help with. The character selection doesn't. After I log into POL, and get to the screen just prior to character selection (where you actually hit "Play", the first non-blue themed page on POL, with "Play" above Information, Developers Room, etc...) the game/character selection doesn't pop up. I tried switching the FFXI config/DG config/Windower config to a lower resolution, but that didn't solve the problem. I switched them to a bordered window mode too, which it does show a border pop up like the game is going to load in, but it never does. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Sounds like your game is crashing as pol.exe loads. This is normally due to the display scaling setting you set on the pol.exe file not saving or by DGVoodoo needing to be set to another display adapter, try all the other options available to see if any allow the game to load, even if they aren't your main card.
What's the difference between the Kenshi and Caradog XI Views? They both updated recently and when I went to install them I noticed some overlap with the DAT files. Is one preferred over the other? Just curious, still new to all this - apologies if this is asked often. Thanks for the videos, they have helped me out quite a bit!
It's a good question as it is confusing. Caradog's includes a lot more than Kenshi's including things like fonts and backgrounds. I actually used both in the creation of the packs. I normally start with caradogs for the extra benefits and then overwrite the files inside with Kenshi's. For a while there Kenshi was the main person updating it every update and Caradog wasn't so that's why I had gotten into this practice and it's what I still currently do. That being said if you just use Caradogs, I don't think you will have any issues or even see a difference.

i have followed your guide second by second and i can see a difference in the game textures and play. however i cannot execute the commands you executed (the show fps and pivot commands) nor can i see the voodoo logo on the right lower corner of screen. the only different thing i made was to replace the XIView with the newer one on the website and i did that according to your instructions. i am confused as i can see a difference in textures and play but i cannot see those things and cannot execute commands. i used the lore friendly pack

11:00 Should this be set to 4096 MB max? Because I have a GPU with 8192 MB but I don't know if that will cause problems with the system RAM usage being limited to only 4 GB after the patch.
You can set it that high, but the game doesn't have the ability to utilize that amount so it really wont change anything.

I tried adjusting the UI setting in Windower, but it won't reflect it ingame.
The UI Scaling setting inside of windower is really what is supposed to do that. So when you raise the meter you do not visually notice any difference in game?

It's not absolutely necessary no. You will lose a lot of sharpness and color vibrance but the look of the textures will be present.
I already had Windower set up before viewing this video. The only new elements I installed were the 4GB patch, dgVoodoo, and ReShade (with the scaling fix). Now the text in my chat log is tiny and the font colors are a bit washed out. The Windower scale setting is correct at 1 and hasn't changed, so one of the above programs modified the font somehow. Increasing the scaling in Windower just makes the rest of the UI look wonky so that shouldn't be the issue. I didn't touch or overwrite any ROM files.
My monitor is 1080p and I've confirmed the dgVoodoo and ReShade effects are working. Not sure where the issue could be?
Sadly this doesn't make a lot of sense as none of those 3 items have anything to do with in game fonts. Therefore the only thing I could think it could be is the scaling fix, try setting that back and see if that fixes it. That setting is supposed to make it so your systems scaling doesn't mess with your game.
I'd followed one of the previous vids some time ago, but the 4gig and high DPI stuff is getting added to my setup after work lol
So I did this install last month, but honestly was too excited to get back into the game to finish the video so I missed all the init file edits. I went back and did them today, and while the game looks significatly better, if feels like everything slowed WAY down. Like I'm constantly moving through syrup. Is this normal? Or, is there a setting to adjust this?
Also, I couldn't get the watermark to go away at all no matter how I ran the dgvoodoo program. I ended up having to go into the settings folder and manually adjusting it to force it to go away.
Try pressing the Home key to turn off your reshade effects, does that help? If so we need to determine which of the reshade items is slowing you down. Let me know.

I used your int.txt.file, for the //config FrameRateDivisor 1 and it works once the game loads up. I change zones my fps drops back down to 30fps. Any way to fix where fps stays at 60fps?
I stopped using Dgvoodoo and switched to the version the Ashita dev made for windower back in December and it made my lighting effects look better. I have not installed reshade as 60fps alone seems to strain my gtx960m.

Really like the guide but I continually run into an issue with my FPS doing about a 5~8 frame dip every 5ish seconds which creates a continuous lag bump so nothing stays smooth. Only dropping it back down to 30fps does it ever disappear. I've tried every which way disabling bit by bit and even with reshade/dgvoodo/texture packs off the bump in fps is still there. This is with a nvidia rtx 2060 card & amd 3600 cpu. Total head scratcher for me.
This is really just an issue with the game itself and probably why it runs at 30FPS capped in the vanilla game. Your not going to see any sustained FPS above 30FPS in my experience, it will always be bouncing a bit depending on many things. I was going to suggest disabling a few things to make sure that wasn't causing your issue but it sounds like you already did that and realized it still happens. Sadly there is no fix for this I am aware of regardless of system specs.
Awesome video, thank you! After playing for a random amount of time(could be hours could be minutes) my game goes to black screen and switches to my desktop, and I am unable to tab back to the game even though it says POL is still running.
Hmmm... this is an odd one I've not heard of before. You were sure to do the 4GB patch yes? You may need to shut things down to see what's making it occur and then we can try to address what's causing it. Start with pressing home to turn off reshade, see if that makes it stop. Next try unloading the textures only to see if that helps, you can do this after logging in by typing //pivot r NextHD or //pivot r NextLore depending on the pack you use.

You should have a ~ key, should be 1 key to the left of the 1 key, this should bring up the reshade menu.

That was strange. Closed the window, went back into properties and now compatibility is there.
Thanks a lot about this guide and files, but I need to put disclaimer here. While Ultrawide background ratio isnt available in in game menu, for some reason with my fresh install and my new ultrawide monitor background is set perfectly and it looks amazing in 3440x1440. Changing background ratio in game doesn't even do anything, so I believe there must be some fixed setting in Windower that auto-detects ultrawide monitor and sets optimal background ratio.

Hey! I followed your instructions; everything worked great, but when I booted up the game through Windower at a later time and typed the //showfps command, it is back to the 30 fps limit. It seems like something was undone. Do you have advice? Thanks!
This can happen when you are using other addon's/plugins that reset FPS to 30. There are a lot that do this, eternity is one of the more popular ones. Another time this happens is when people login with mules first and it ends up not loading the command while they are swapping chars. In this case you just need to run the command manually after you login to the main char. Command is //config FrameRateDivisor 1
Hey I'm a returning FFXI player. Played from 2005 to 2019. I haven't browsed all your videos yet and will do so, do you have a useful link to current job guides with optimal gear for 2022 and also decent job lua's for gearswap. I thought I saved all my lua's but lost all of them sadly.

I assume custom resolutions are still possible with these texture packs within Windower? When I last played, I had mine set to 1920x1040 borderless window with a start position of 0,0 so that my windows taskbar was still visible but not covering up any part of the game's window because I oftentimes have other stuff running in the background (I really wish game developers would make maximized window mode standard!). Also, is XIView really necessary or can that be left out? I find I don't really like the font choice they used, and prefer the original game's font. Is it possible to use XIView but keep the original font and get everything else it has?
Unsure on if custom resolutions like that will work but assume they would. XIView is what makes all the icons and text and such formatted for widescreen so you don't have to use it but if you don't those things may not look as nice. It's not required though. Note my HD pack changes the font as well to my own so you may want to stick with the Lore friendly pack.

I keep getting a "no file: config.dll" error from XIPivot, which prevents it from running.
EDIT: Nevermind, had to reinstall Windower, now it works. Only other problem I notice is the framerate hitching.
Windower loads POL just fine, but once I click play it just closes and disappears. Any insight? Appreciate the videos and the packs all the same, thanks!
This normally happens for two reasons. 1. The display scaling setting we set on pol.exe didn't save. Check it and make sure it did. 2. change DGVoodoo from using All adapters to specific ones to see if selecting any specific adapter allows you to load pol. These two things fix the issue 99% of the time.

hello, after install of everything, my controller stopped working in-game. It works on POL just not working when im in game. Im not sure if you would know how to fix that or not. Odd, no it should just work from what I've heard (I don't use controller). Have you activated the gamepad always on feature in windower 4? That's about the only setting I know of that has to do with the controller. Hope that helps.
sao when i right click on pol theres no compatibility tab so i cant change settings for all users now can i do the high dpi scaling thing
There should be, check again. Right click, Properties. If you still don't find it, check your windows display scaling, if it's at 100% this setting won't matter, if it's higher then you do need this.
One question: Is this all compatible with Horizon XI/other stand alone private servers?

Whether or not this works on private servers is hit and miss depending on how they have set it up. Unsure if it works specifically on Horizon or not.
Once again, you delivered an AWESOME pack my man. I noticed the bard songs are no longer displayed by color (which is severely disappointing as I've gotten very used to them). I tried clicking the link you posted on another reply to jean pauls page, but I have absolutely no idea what I need to do or download in order to get the song icons to change back to color representations.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
You will want to download the file here ffxidats.caarrie.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1353 and put that file into the ROM/119 folder in my pack and it should give you the icons that you are looking for.

Unfortunately I don't think these are the status Icons I used to have from updating the dat files during previous make ffxi beautiful again years. The icons I got from you last year had different colors for the different brd songs. For example, march was a light blue, minuet was red, minne was yellow. Any idea where those came from?
So I've only ever used two icons. The previous ones I used came from XIVIew. But these are the icons that you should have seen by default with my pack so that's why I'm confused. This pack and Jean Pauls are the only two packs I'm aware of for icons. github.com/Caradog/XI-View
@@NextGamesGuide The ones that came with your pack for this make ffxi beautiful in 2022 aren't color coded (marches in light blue, madrigals in purple, etc) the ones that came with your pack were all songs in silver with a symbol representing what they are (so for marches it's the orangish haste circle, madrigal has the bullseye). Jean pauls icons look like they are exactly the same as the ones in the pack from this make ffxi beautiful 2022.
Do you happen to know where to find the icons that use songs that come color coded (also the cor rolls and other icons in that pack I feel were more apporopriate but it's likely i'm just familiar with them)? That is what i'm mostly interested in getting
