Common Issues and Solutions:
Having issues with FPS Changing? Make sure to go into Windower4, Addon's and click the down arrow next to Config just like we did with DressUp. Sorry this was somehow missed!
At 58:49 there was an audio issue. All I was trying to say there is if you load your own texture mods, make sure you load them FIRST in the order.
Windower4 has been updated!!! It is now an MSI installer. Simply run the file and install it to the same directory I speak of in the video instead of copying the .exe into it.
Is your DGVoodoo Crashing on Open? Make sure Windows Scaling is set to 100%!

I tossed all my money away :( I still need a new PC but with part shortages I did not want to buy a machine I'd not be 100% happy with. BUT . LOVE everything about this video and I'm going to be looking at machines in the near future based off this video, I got a tiny taste of beautiful FFXI before my pc died. Also did you need a hand with Katana DAT or did you get lucky with one yet with the right one for you?

Your instructions are damn near fool proof. I'm an engineer but software has always been my achilles heel and you make it so straight forward as to be simple. Seriously the only thing that could make this simpler is if you had created an install-wizard for all of this. Also, it is worth noting that the Windower 4 download now comes packed in an installer, so copying/pasting to a directory is no longer necessary.

I followed this guide today and it was amazing! One small thing you may have forgot to mention (maybe you did say it but I definitely missed it). In the init.txt file you're editing to enable to texture packs, DON'T FORGET TO TAKE OUT THE SPACE AND // BEFORE lua load XIPivot. I was stumped for a few minutes as to why my textures would not load. I was looking for typos and everything but could not find my error. Then comparing your txt file to mine, I saw that small difference and realized XIPivot needs to load duh!
Excellent and most detailed guide. My system specs are similar so I'm running the same things you are. The only change I had to make is UI scaling set to 2x in the windower settings, because at 4K the font and and everything else was just too tiny to see properly.

The game actually runs smoother for me now after doing all these steps. I had to turn shadows off but I'm getting 50-60fps in combat, where before it would slow down to 34ish for some reason.

Also, for any notepad editing. I recommend MS Visual Code rather than Notepad++

Due to the fact that Visual Code has color coded on. Meaning, if someone made a notepad file with color codes, it will display properly so you can easily track any coding to fix/edit.
Not to mention it has some QOL features like bookmark tab on the left. So if you open a lot of notepad files. You don't have to click all the way to the right to see. Everything is displayed on the left bar and you can open up to 100 if you like (I have 30 files open).
It has Dark Theme and other appearance features you can customize. It just works so well like MS Office. Very fast, clean, no ads or any of that BS.
But probably one of the best features that it has an auto-backing feature. So everytime you save, it can make backups for you. I had a power outage 2 years ago. I opened a Notepad file back then and it got corrupted. So I lost the notepad file and had to resort to an older saved version.
Also, there have been news about Notepad++ uploading user files when they got hack a few years ago. That's how I knew I had to switch.
Visual Code is just better in every single way. Plus, this program is use by various programmers. So the more you use this, the more you get used to the functions and who knows. You might need some coding to do in the future.
Definitely recommend it above all notepad programs!

I would like to point out a glitch with using Dressup and changing your race (at least couple years since i last used it) when you change your race from say Taru to Galka - despite being apparence only it lets you wear gear specific to that race, like a Galka switch to Taru could wear Wonder gear
Awesome video, thank you for making it so detailed. I had a question about computer specs. I'm assuming the need for the recommended cpu and GPU are in part due to the texture packs. What cpu and GPU passmark would you recommend, if someone had no interest in using a texture pack?
Passmark of 3-4k on both should easily handle this. Less could possibly handle it but I don't have expereince with anything lower recently. You are correct that the vast majority of the resource need here goes to the new texture packs so if your lower then this give it a try, it will probably work just fine.
Thanks so much for making this video. This was the tipping point for getting me to give FFXI another try.
A little tip though for TH-cam time stamps though: if you put the time stamps in the video description in this format "5:04 - FFXI Install" instead of "FFXI Install: 5:04" then it will actually show up in the player HUD as well as a side panel with a GUI to navigate the timestamps, which is a much better user experience. I keep having to scroll down to compare the current time stamp with the list of time stamps to find out which one I'm currently at and how long until the next one, meanwhile, I'm not watching the video anymore because I've scrolled down the page.

Thanks for the updated guide! Question, though: I've had Ashenbubs for awhile, and don't love what it does to the character models. However, I really can't go without the awesome detailed zone maps it includes. Do you know if there's a pack specifically for those, or which specific dats they are? (Or are they included in yours? Going to try yours later today.)
I have included one in mine so see if that one fits your needs.
Im the opposite, the filter used to increase the res smears together colors when upscaling, it gets rid of all the grittiness ground textures have and makes it seem like an oil painting, while characters and armor, who have solid colors and smooth gradients, the filter works very nice for because it isnt removing any detail, though pupil shine is heavily distorted.

There is, you can type //pivot status to see what's loaded //pivot load FolderNameHere to load a texture pack and //pivot unload FolderNameHere to unload. You have to zone to see the changes and note there are some textures that only get loaded on bootup and those won't change until you reload.

LOL, No worries. This guide was mainly to cover issues people had and the changes to the new tools over the last year, if you made it through recently then you are all set as you should already have these new versions installed! I would skip to the 42:35 part and go from there. That's going to be the new part for you that will introduce you to three new texture packs that you can choose from (if you wish). One of them being an updated version of the one you downloaded yesterday.

Thanks. PoL can look a little unusual on some setups depending on some factors. If the reshade effects and such kick in before the actual game loads it can make playonline look a little unusual. You should still be able to easily navigate through it to the game. You can try disabling the reshade feature during pol load but most just leave it as its only up for a few seconds.
Coming back to the game after 9 years, going to try this guide. Scripts folder didn't exist under windower4. Not until I launched playonline using windower launch button.

Thanks for the updated guide! I followed your previous guide and have a few questions.
1) I run multiple characters. I found when zoning from the Abyssea teleport to the maw, most of the time it would load black and I could only see the maw and any other players. I could not move at all but could cast, ja's, etc. I had to unload XIPivot and warp. Are you aware of this issue and, if so, has there been a fix for it?

2) XIView would crash my game in any of the 3 zones with the A.M.A.N. Liaison NPC. I had to alter it so my master stars and menu fonts were the originals. Is this still an issue?

3) I have dgVoodoo and ReShade installed from your previous video. I have not updated anything since I followed that video about a year ago. Will reinstalling these bring any added value to improving the look of the game?

Again, thanks for the update! I shared your last one with quite a few friends who followed it as well.
1. The black screen is a known issue and occurs only on some setups. It seems most often caused by zoning and textures not loading in before the zone. I've seen this occur due to people running in slow hard drives, slower pcs, multiple characters and even have instances where none of those explain it so understand it's not a complete list. Sadly this is just something the people who have the issue have to deal with. I can say that I offer 4 different packs in this updated version and the different packs have drastically different sizes and people who use the smallest one have the least issues with what you describe so maybe try out some of the packs I suggest here and see if helps this issue for you.
2. This is an odd one, started happening for just a few people (similar to the above issue) when the npc's were released and the fix you describe is also what i've heard they do. However, i've not heard of anyone mention this issue with my updated video so I'm hopeful it's now behind us.
3. Eh, no I don't think they will make much of a difference. Note they have been updated since so it's possible there was something updated in them that fixes issues like #1 so it couldn't hurt for you to do it. The big change from the last video is when I go over the texture packs toward the end so make sure you take a look at that and see how they work for you. Let me know how it goes!

1) It is random when it happens to me. I just unload Pivot and warp and conduct business circa 205 graphics. As I am thinking about it, I recently spent a lot of time in Abyssea during the last campaign and it did not happen once. It did happen to me in Reisenjima as well (not recently, though). Again, I just unload but was hoping for a possible solution.

2) I -just- downloaded an updated XIView (which was updated 3 hours ago at the time of this message). The NPC is no longer crashing me! :)

just a heads up, i found config in plug ins tab, NOT add ons tab. everything else worked perfectly though, amazing guide! only thing i wish about your own textures was that the escha zones stayed monochrome. made them more unique even if color wise it's a bore. but i love your texture changes way more than ashen's :/

Somehow in full window mode. Check ffxi config, windowed, and even changed the general settings in voodoo. All set to borderless window, but can’t windows out to other programs. I’m not too savvy. So I need guides.
@@brad2932 Thanks so much! In regards to your question. Are you sure you have another application open? For instance have your web browser open and then launch the game. Once in the game hit Alt-Tab, does it switch you to another application quickly?
SE needs to work on upgrading textures for XIV. Some of them are horrendous. If I was still playing XI I'd do this for sure.

Glad to hear! Sadly I have not, I don't really have the ability to separate the packs as it would take research of pretty much every texture to know which pack to put it in.

I have a silly question. Say I wanted Windower, its add-ons and plugins, the new init file, and XIPivot for the HD texture packs; is it at all mandatory to install DGVoodoo2 and Reshade, or can I skip past them to get the HD textures installed? in other words, are XIPivot and the texture packs reliant on DGVoodoo being installed, or can they operate stand-alone?

I'm glad to see the system requirements I'll need, I haven't played since October 2020 because my old PC is toast, but I plan on returning when I am able to buy another PC. Also I have been on the server Valefor and I don't seem to be having any luck, most my friends are gone, I would like to find a server and a decent group for Aeonic weapons. Any ideas?
Edit: I was always curious if it's possible when running two characters and playing with a controller, is it possible to hotkey an alt tab function to the controller? I haven't been able to figure that out
I would probably go with one of the more populated servers if you want to play with others, Odin or Asura. Sadly I have no expereince with controllers or multi-accounts so I am unaware of how to hot key the ALT-TAB function to swap between them. I know how to easily do it with a mouse/keyboard but not on controller.
So I am up to the Reshade menu in POL. You say just log in to POL but I can't reshade has taken over the POl window and I have way of clicking my POL account.... How do you get past this bit. In your video you just skip to FFXI. Please send help
Is there a purpose to installing DGVoodoo if you don't plan on using Reshade or Texture packs? Does it improve the performance?
It does help but if your not using any texture packs or reshade I do think the benefits would be small. From what I understand you wouldn't see much benefit in this situation.
I have a question: does init have to be init.txt because mine isn't. Is that the reason why the textures aren't working for me? I thought they were.
For anyone using this guide with ashita, where pivot will load Xi view from it. I was getting crashes in the main city's at the Aman. The next game Dat pack already has the Xi view dats in them (I think a older version) I had to remove those 3 dats. And then install the updated Xi view as normal.
Still not through doing all my setup but I got stuck for a while with "Pivot a AshenbubsHD-Prime" not actually loading the overlay, it turns out the '-' caused an issue so I just renamed the folder and this line to not include it. Thanks for the Guide!

Absolutely. Just make sure there aren't any settings I'm changing that are in the settings you are adding or there could be overlap and only one will win.
I think I saw you using in one of your videos a ui mod that makes I guess one of your dialogue screen basically a box with sprites and chat bubbles. I’m not sure if that was in windower or ashita or if it was even your video at this point. Do you know the mod that I’m talking about?
Sadly I think that was someone else's video as that doesn't sound like anything I've used before.

I like to take my time and farm items, try to solo, etc. I haven't played much since last year around this time when my concentration was thrown off, I'm still doing the 'ulbukan travel guide' quest line but I don't know exactly where I left off hehe. Obviously I'll never find the origins of this mod, but I will hopefully get back into the game soon enough. I have been working on some computers putting them together and have been also learning more about that which is good, but this game is the test I use when I am done always. I just got an old 15 year old mac to boot 64 bit windows with refind and I upgraded the cpu to 2.8ghz and the ssd and ram and now I can play ffxi on it! Hey there NextGames! Thanks for this. I seem to have an issue where using the HD texture packs (have tried Amelila's and your own) there's a really noticeable grain effect on the textures that makes them look not smooth. I'm on a 1440p display and have followed the steps diligently. Any ideas? Thanks! EDIT: Jeuno in particular...
Try turning off super sampling in windower menu, I know that has helped others with that resolution.
When I do the dgvoodoo step it makes my playonline not work. As soon as i remove those files it work fine again
Specifically once i take out the files in the MS folder my launcher works again. Something about those files is messing with my launcher.
Edit: It was my desktop scaling. Weird little quirk and not the first time something has given me a problem.....guess i should never change it
This should be added to the next updated guide that is done. I was getting desperate, loaded all the comments and did a Find search on voodoo to find this. I run a 4K display and usually have scaling at 250%, had to drop it to 200% to fix the issue.
Hi thank you for the video! Reshade menu(home key) only works for in me in the PoL viewer and I cannot access the reshade menu(home key) or see the effects once loaded into the final fantasy xi title screen. Any tips on how to fix this?
Make sure you are running the game through WIndower4, NOT through Pol.exe.

At the 35min mark it says to check the "legacy" box, I don't seem to have that available. I believe this adds the "Clarity" option talked about soon after, as it also does not seem to be available to me. Did I miss something?

I know some of this works in ashita as I've heard others state they have done it, however I have 0 expereince with Ashita so I sadly won't be very helpful with troubleshooting any issues with it.

Whenever I use amelila's HD pack/the next games pack, my client hangs in specific spots in bastok and sandy. any idea what the cause/fix is? Thanks for the guide. I've switched to Ashenbubs to avoid the hanging for now.

Not sure if this was mentioned prior to this post, but you will need to launch Windower once first before the scripts folder is added. At least that was my experience.
Also wanted to add that the Config option is in Plugins and not Addons. Not sure if this was moved since the explanation in the description about why the framerate doesn't change

Another question.. For equip viewer, the pos I have assigned in the Init file triggers on only one of my accounts. Other accounts I log in with default to a different pos. Do you know why this may be?
Hmmm, try typing the equipviewer line in when in one of those other characters, does that fix it for that character the next time you login as them? Command is //equipviewer pos 1650 748

This most common cause is you are launching your game through PoL, make sure you are launching it through Windower4.
is it possible to use ashenbubs texture pack and use your map texture? So far I like ashenbubs texture style but that doesn't include detailed notes on the maps so I was wondering if that works and if yes, how can I do it?
Sadly no you can't do this. About the only way it would work is to find the original map texture pack and to use it as the second texture pack instead of mine.
Awesome video! I ran into a hurdle when I was looking for the script folder. If anyone else is having this issue you have to run the playonline viewer through windower by double clicking windower. This might have been said in the video but I missed it.

I had to reinstall everything to troubleshoot some problems I was having in ffxi. I am not getting the dgVoodoo watermark and wondering if that will be a problem with how it runs. I tried re downloading 3 times and going through the all the steps and get the same thing and also my resolution under the directX tab will NOT stay on 1920 x 1080. It goes goes back to unforced. I'm at my wits end as everything was going so smoothly and hope you can give me a suggestion to fix this problem. And once again, thanks so much for all the work you put into this!
Try to right click on the dgvoodoo file and run as administrator to get the settings to save.

Followed every step and everything was working fine until I got to the reshader section.
Now I can't even get past the checking ff version to launch the game.
I'm launching through windower4 and uninstalled both the reshader and dgvoodoo and I checked Pol and ffxi version with no errors.
Guessing I'll reinstall and try again without these steps.
Edit: Also there was a bit of screen shake after this step during my log in process in Pol.

I have one question, when i copy and paste XIPivot rom file, the master job 3D effect icon didnt change, how can i do? 😊
3D effects are from XIView which must be manually installed. Do these steps again. 40:02

What does it say after that? Normally it says "The specific module could not be found". If that's the case then it's not been put into the correct location. Make sure it's under windower4\addons\XIPivot. Make sure the libs folder is at windower4\addons\xipivot\libs and that _xipivot.dll is inside of that folder.

In your moghouse is a globe with what looks to be a galaxy. My Son says it looks like a Star Globe, but it is unlike his star globe.
What is yours called? How does one get it? If it is a Star Globe, how did you get it to show a galaxy? (instead of its cover?)

I hope I'm not sounding like a broken record but does this work with Ashita? Or is it just windower? I tried to get this to work before but I failed, it was just too hard. I want to try again, can I achieve this?
Sadly not, this walkthrough is specific to Windower. Now some of these things will also work in Ashita but the installation method and which of these are available for Ashita will vary. If you can let me know what your problem was before I can let you know if there has been a known solution found for it.

FFXIAH.com is the main one I am aware of but it really focuses on retail servers. Unaware of much that has to do with private servers.

Just did a fresh install on a new computer today. 1 adjustment to re-shader. "Legacy" is no longer an options, you need to select AstrayFX now... this is the package that include Clarity.

Is there an add-on or plug in for bigger text and everything else of text? Like Players name in the party box or your own items in your inventory, quests and chat. I have really bad eye sight and everything getting bigger but the chat staying small hurts my eyes trying to read.
You will want to increase the scaling setting in windower 4 which will boost how large all that stuff is. Note this means you will now fit less of it on the screen so I recommend boosting it by small amounts until you find the setting that works for you.

Checked recent comments, but when I hit the home key in ffxi the reshade menu doesnt appear. It appeared in the play online executable but not in game. Any idea whats causing this?
nvm I found another comment after posting, the video says to launch the play online, so I launched it directly through the PoL.exe using windower fixed it.
Ok well I did all the steps (most of it) do I have to get the AshenBubs texture pack? I thought I already had it with the FFXIBeauty file thing. What do I do with the tetxure pack then?
Ashenbubs is a unique texture pack so it's your choice on if you use it. Look at my examples at the end for which you want to use.
This no longer works as I have tried up till 33:27 the POL no longer loads fully it just get stucks then closes itself, is there any way around this?
First off, try the newer video which has many fixes from this. Thanks for the amazing guide! My system doesn't do anything when i enter the frame rate divisor 1 config setting. Any thoughts on why that would be?
What do you mean it doesn't do anything? Do you mean FPS doesn't change? What is FPS both before and after you enter the command? also make sure you type // before the the framerate command if your typing it in and not simply activating it in the init.txt.
@@NextGamesGuide Looks like one of my accounts is running at 50+. The other one (through the same windower profile) stays at 29 however. Also, my game window is now locked into the top left corner of my screen, unable to move it. Curious why that would be. Thanks for the assistance!!
Hmmm, so it's definitely working on one. It may be something to do with multiple accounts. Are you typing the command into the one that's stuck at 29? Haven't heard of a locked position game screen before, should be able to move it freely though most people play fullscreen.
Any idea on what I should use now that legacy standard effects isn't available on the new reshader?
A new video we be out Monday that addresses this change as yes some of the legacy packs have gone away so I had to configure a new setup.

Would an Asus Strix 1050 TI suffice for this setup? Passmark gave GPU a 6331 and my CPU 7493, I know says otherwize on you're video but im still curious as this game is super old lol.
Yes that will be enough as long as you do NOT use scaling. There are specific parts in my video where it mentions the scaling of windows and the game, if it's anything but the lowest setting that I recommend you may have problems, otherwise no you should be good. Enjoy the beauty!

I did your instructions by the letter, but when I installed Reshade my Play Online viewer says "cannot acquire version information", then i'm not able to login anymore. Trying to re-install the game if resolves the issue. But any idea why I can't login anymore after installation of reshade? I don't have this issue with Final Fantasy XIV, only with XI.
After re-installing everything seems fine. But now I have another issue. Reshade works only on PlayOnline, and it does not work on the actual game itself. How can I make reshade function inside the game? Instead of only working on PlayOnline screen?
This normally happens when your not launching the game through windower. Are you sure your launching the game through windower 4.

Hey man, I encountered an annoying issue after installing the NextGames texture. Whenever I zone, there is a small chance that the screen just stays black, the chat menu loads, but no background, character model, and I can't interact with the menu. Is there a way to fix this issue? So far I've needed to /config terminate and restart the client every time, and it's quite annoying.
This is sadly an issue that has been happening with many textures for years. Happens to only some people and it seems to be regardless of system specs but it does seem to happen more often with the more textures you load. Are you just loading mine or are you loading others as well? You can try turning super sampling off, some have reported it helped them but other then that this is just an annyoing glitch that some people have when using some textures. I can say amelila's pack doesn't seem to cause this near as much so may want to give that a try and see if changes enough of your game to make it suit your taste.
This is pretty trivial, but is there a way to configure this so the ambient lighting (F11) is auto-enabled upon startup? Currently I need to hit F11 upon login.
Try changing the "game_forceambientlight" line in the init.txt file under Windower4\Scripts to have a 1 at the end instead of a 0.

You need to reinstall XIView after some updates that overwrite the files. You will want to redownload it from here and copy the rom folder over again. github.com/KenshiDRK/XiView
Even after downloading config, whenever I use a teleporter my FPS caps back to 30, using a command line (config FramteRateDivisor 1) get's back at 60... is it a known issue? Any fixes? Thank you so much for the guide, really. Love this game.
This is because you are using another mod that is resetting your FPS each time you zone. None of the ones I suggest in my Addon's video cause this so I'd start with seeing which you use that I do NOT suggest and disabling those. Then enable them one by one to determine which is causing your issues. Note that mods that affect cutscenes in any way are most commonly the cause of this.

PS: can I transfer my character into a full world paying for the World Transfer Service? Or I need World Pass Code for that (I honestly don't even know if you can apply a Pass Code in the World Transfer to begin with). Seems all the crowd is in Asura. I went to Bahamuth and starting areas and cities are all but deserted, thought I'd see many groups of friends starting over from zero and grouping together for low~mid level content, refraining from uses trustes too much or at all and not using sparks all that much either (you know, trying to play it somewhat classic but not so, so, spartan still. A middle ground, if you please)... but, alas no. None of that, sadly : (
Hi, i am using your texture pack, with the lore modifications, but i dont want to spoil me or my friends about hidden stuff and the like, so i dont want to have the modified maps with markers and stuff, could you explain how to remove that? i still want to have an adventure with my friends and get lost.
Sadly this is not easy to do, you would need to discover all of the textures that touch maps (there are probably a hundred) and replace those with originals. However, I'm about to release an update to this video. One completely lore friendly and the other pure HD Textures. The lore friendly version will not have the maps so that may fill your need. Video is being put together now and should be out in the next week if there are no delays.
My game often crashes (freezes and throws me back to windows) in the very spot in lower Jeuno (right before entering the junction part that leads to other maps of the town, passing the AH.
That is happening currently in two computers, both handle the game at 60FPS all the time and are modern machines more than capable of dealing with the game.
Please, any ideas what it could be?
Don't hear about crashes often so this is pretty unusual. Which Texturepack's are you using?
@@NextGamesGuide problem was with Amelila textures, it seems. When I disable them, crash is gone. Don't have the same problem with Ashenbubs pack. Waiting for your lore friendly pack : )
Do I need to do anything to make Windower work with my gamepad if I already configured the gamepad for FF11 in the game config?
My init.txt maps F11 to something else so that MAY get in the way, not sure. If you find F11 no longer works for your controller you may wan to remove the line entry in the init.txt that maps F11 to another function.
Great video, i've followed step by step but i'm at the DGvoodoo part and when i try to launch playonline it crashes before going into the menu! I don't know what did wrong. Edit: It seems when i copy and pasted those four files from dgvoodo into my playonline it crashes before it fully loads. When i remove them i can start it up again, is there a fix for this?
This occurs because your windows display settings in windows 10 are set to a scale mode other then 100%, make sure you are set to scaling of 100% in display settings
So everything was going perfectly for me up until the dgvoodo and reshader steps. When I log in following the finish of reshader, i can't open the reshader menu with home key?
Any idea where I messed this up at? Lol
Edit: whatever happened at that point seems to have undone everything prior. Frame is recapped at 30. All my plugins (mini map, etc) are gone. I've gone over it a few times but I got nothing. Don't see where I could have messed it up at
Are you sure you are running the game through Windower4? Someone else yesterday had similar issues and it was discovered he was running pol.exe directly.
@@NextGamesGuide that may be it. I did open pol straight from the directory to make sure the dgvoodo worked and did the same with the reshader check. I'll try again with launching windowed instead lol
