Daito Ryu Techniques for BJJ: Te Makura & Shiho Nage

  • In this video I demonstrate two old school Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu techniques and how their principles can be used in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Te Makura is a technique that folds the elbow inwards while Lully the opponent downward. Shiho Nage is a technique that folds the elbow inwards while raising the opponent. In BJJ it is possible to utilize the principles and pins associated with these Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu techniques without much modification.

Great analysis! I've been doing Daito-ryu for about 15 years and have been doing similar research as well. I will follow your channel with interest. Thank you!

Thanks for the message. I have some material that is more jiu-jitsu, but I try to add the Daito Ryu aspects that I see.

Did tomiki aikido I have notice from the arm drag I can set up alot of the techniques that I was taught. Also my teacher told me that with Shiho nage there is a small twist on the wrist and that I should expect pepole twist outfit if they are flexible and to flow into another technique.

He doesn't know how to do aikido. That is why the person escaped. He is a mcdojo. What do you want to know about shihonage? I know aikido and can you it correctly.

When they do-si-do, just do the shiho nage again a little faster. Uke cannot keep up with their foot work the second time and you do not have to torque their arm. Also I have found it is easier to keep newbies from twisting out of the throw if you add a little forward or backward movement with the throw to simulate them pushing or pulling. Of course if they actually push or pull it is super easy and they are not going to do-si-do out.

In judo we do a version of shiho nage, but instead of the wrist we grab the lapel

That’s right! Reverse seoi nage. Is that the one you’re referencing?

You need to drop your hand like a sword strike. Your bending your arm as you bring hers down. These techniques are designed to emulate weapon attacks. your hand should drop directly between your heads...your bending your downward arch and giving her room to bring her head into the circle. In other words take out the curve of your drop hand and make it more linear and direct to your center line....your droping way outside of your center.

These two thecnics are very good but I notice that in the shihonage have a little mistake when You executed, and not It' s your partner fault. When You move to execute the shihonage Its need move your head down the uke's elbow and mantein the moviment lower than your partner (your belt lower than her hip). Yes, It's very dangerous. Thanks!

@@Aiki_and_Jiu it’s true that’s it’s Daito Ryu aiki jujutsu but more commonly practiced now in aikido

@@Vengeance888 ah I see. Yes aikido is likely more well known compared to Daito Ryu. I am representing Daito Ryu techniques used in a BJJ setting here though. Aikido does have many similar techniques, but my training is Daito Ryu.

@@Vengeance888 100%. The vast majority of the time, BJJ is practiced in positions favorable to suwari waza. Learning how to apply certain techniques or principles against resisting opponents is the goal.
