Pro tip! Use yellow teflon gas tape on the threads of the 1 lb. propane tank before twisting on the butane to propane adapter to prevent leaks

When this isobutane model Thermacell first came out, lots of folks were using the adapter hack to attach the 1lb green propane tanks as demonstrated here. Big mistake. Propane isn't filtered like isobutane and contains numerous impurities, including a black sticky oil that will plug and destroy your isobutane Thermacell. That's exactly what happened and was reported in numerous reviews about this product, which had the deleterious effect of significantly lowering the star rating and scaring people away from purchasing it. My strong recommendation is to only use isobutane tanks and DO NOT use the adapter to run propane through this device. I've had mine for over 5 years now and it's working as good as the day I bought it. Great device, but only if used per the manufacturers recommendation with isobutane. Otherwise, get ready to replace it when it stops working.

Good to know. I have a couple of those green propane canisters that have been sitting around for years. I was thinking I might be able to use them up with this in my backyard, but I don't want to ruin this device just to use up those canisters.

Hello. Your information about the recommendation of isobutane cartridges worries me. I had a question about the suitability of the gas composition in the cartridges at the dealer and I was told that the composition does not matter. Could you post a link here where the manufacturer recommends isobutane cartridges?? Thank you

    • @THerd-um5tl

@@martinsefr1394 Hi Martin, when these first came out I immediately bought one, because like most folks, we were tired of paying for the expensive butane cartridges required by the previous model. I saw many people posting comments on Amazon in their reviews, that they were adapting this for use with the 1lb green propane bottles, and one by one, they started reporting failures of the device, saying it would no longer light. I regularly reload my 1lb propane bottles for use on my blackstone griddle and know there is a black oily substance contained in propane. You'll see it if you've ever reloaded these. It's my conclusion that oily tar like substance which doesn't affect the propane regulators and devices its designed for, is detrimental to the tiny orifice used in many isobutane devices such as the Theracell. And again, that concern was confirmed - at least in my mind - by the numerous Thermacell failures being reported in the Amazon reviews by people who used an adapter to run propane through it. To be clear, I don't believe there are any additional health risks by using propane over butane, but the impurities will eventually clog your Thermacell. These are designed to fit an isobutane cartridge, not a propane cartridge. That's by design - for a reason. I guess you have to ask yourself, if you do it, are you prepared to wind up throwing away your investment?

that's cool about the pyrethyrin I wanted to know what they use on those pads. I wonder, can you leave the pads in the Thermacell Backpacker, then make a 1 part to 5 part tincture of that pyrethrin in a dropper bottle and just add a few drops at a time with out having to remove the pads and just keep refilling it that way?

I saw your video and I needed another thermocell. I had the blue adapter because I sometimes use a mini backpack stove that has that small screw on the port and it worked great with regular propane bottle. I bought the thermocell backpacker like in the video used the light blue adapter with a green bottle of propane. The flame in the thermocell isn’t strong enough to burn the blue pad. With the backpacker style thermocells you need a Colman can of a butane/propane mix that luckily my neighborhood Walmart carries at a decent price. If that doesn’t work I got a new defective out of the box thermocell.
Update: I had to return the thermocell backpacker because it got damaged using the wrong fuel. Luckily Amazon exchanged it at no charge and got the right fuel and it worked perfectly. The compatible fuel is the one shown attached the to thermocell backpacker in this video. Coleman brand mix of butane and propane. Stay away from the green bottle using that adapter or you might damage the thermocell like I did. There’s only a couple of dollars price difference between the two types of fuels .

Great video, thanks for making it. I’ve bought the thermacell mr300 and will most likely buy the backpacker also. Your video got me wondering if I’m onto something and I would be interested to know if you’ve had any dealings with ‘no see ums’ and using specifically permethrin to repell them. I’ll explain… I’m in the u.k. and looking to visit Scotland but the Scottish midge (scientific name Culicoides impunctatus) is a problem, it belongs to the same family known in North America as ‘no see ums’. Thermacell tell me their regular pads are made specifically to repel mosquitos and will do horse flies, deer flies. And that- it is their multi insect repellant pads that contain prallethrin that repel mozzies, black fly and ‘no see ums’. But they tell me these multi pads are not available internationally atm. (Don’t know if that means there’s some international restriction or they’re not ready to market them globally yet). So that’s a problem for me since I’m unable to test if they work on the Scottish midge. I’m not certain what prallethrin is or even if it’s their twist on a licensed version of permethrin and I need to look into it further, because if it’s simply permethrin (as in your video) then I could buy it here and soak used pads and try. Is why I had to ask if you’ve had any dealings with the ‘No see ums’, maybe you could shed some light on it for me? Any advice appreciated, thanks again,Stuart.

Hey did you end up trying the propane tank? I read in the description of the Thermacell Backpacker "Note: Runs on a backpacking stove fuel canister (not included). Pressurized self-sealing (iso) butane and propane fuel mix. Product will not function with 100% propane fuel tanks." so I am curious how it turned out?

  • @eezyclsmooth9035

I have watched all types of Thermacell videos. Let me just say, skip the other videos or watch them if your curious.
Here is the Thermacell Zen Master. I've done the check valve canisters. The 1lb. Coleman. Reloading the Thermacell pads.
This is the easiest and Best (my opinion). I use the "Backpacker". Refillable 1lb "Flame King" tanks are a breeze to refill. When reloading
the pads with Pyretherin, which is colorless, use harmless blue food coloring to paint them Blue! Looks and preforms like new.
