I wouldn't so much say that this is an answer to Streets of Rage so much as a blatant parody of Final Fight, and the entire Capcom Beat 'em up library up to that point. Everything right down to sprite size, the color pallet, even the fonts and energy bars. And if there isn't enough proof that Konami isn't throwing shade at Capcom, one of the henchmen is even called "Ryuken."
Agreed. This has nothing to do with Streets of Rage and everything to do with Final Fight. I do love the game though, that level three rap song is the greatest thing ever.
Eh, the answer to Final Fight would have been Crime Fighters and Vendetta, both of which were released before Violent Storm after the success of Final Fight. SoR2 however was being released around the time Violent Storm turned up. Although looking similar, the speed, controls and responsiveness feel different from FF to this title. Also have to remember, a lot of sprites were this size by 1994, which was pretty saturated by arvade beat 'em ups. The colours, which were mostly pastel shades, were also a lot brighter and more cartoony (Konami beat 'em ups were well known for their cartoon style humour).
In a roundabout way, indeed correct. Without Streets, there wouldn't be a Final Fight, so there wouldn't be something directly ragging on the competition. I also kind of, but not entirely, find Monster Maulers sort of an answer to Capcom's fighting competition games. Only through the lens of taking Street Fighter type mechanics and applying them to their sort of formula for Beat'Em ups. All the while being a gentle parody of Japanese kids' programming the game designers clearly grew up with.
Idk man this game seem way more in line with final fight than streets of rage. This are clearly Cody hagar and guy clones and the story is basically final fight meets double dragon
This game was at my local pizza shop and I would play it every day after school when i was a kid. I could never remember the name of it years later. The only thing I remembered was that it was fun and the music kicked ass. I finally found the name after a lengthy online search and played it on MAME. Konami was damn near untouchable in the 90's.
Wouldn't consider this a Streets of Rage challenger, more of a Fist of the North Star parody than anything. One of those franchises where the licsencing was so bad, that developers that were interested made parodies of the series
I think the "giant scissors like weapon" wielded by the boss on the train is supposed to be a giant version of the hole punch used on tickets by ticket collectors.
I own a 4 player Vendetta machine and have a Crime Fighters board which I swap in and out every once in a while. Vendetta is my preferred beat em up of that era. Such a great time!
This is what I was thinking way more. Violent Storm is really considered the third part of the trilogy of beat 'em ups Konami put out, despite not being an actual sequel to them.
Never played this one. But Konami definitely delivered something unique. Amazing how many beat em ups existed over time. Main thing is the experience it delivers when you "insert coin", then choose player one or two.
Between the quasi-futuristic setting, the character designs and that opening cinematic, I’d say this was waaay more inspired by the Double Dragon franchise than Streets of Rage 2.
Now this video is a treat! I already tired out crime Fighters and Vendetta (Or Crime Fighters 2 in Japan) and i love them both (Cant wait for you to talk about a certain something that goes on in the Japanese versions if you catch my drift lol) And you shown other games i would like to try out too! But yeah about Violent Storm, This game looks fun and also how you explained it, it also seems hilarious to some degree when looking at this as a parody of Beat em Ups (While missing the lift section). I can also see why it can be considered a "Crime Fighters 3" as well. I would too honestly. I can also agree maybe the sprite are a bit too big (The sprites was what i noticed first) and im curious about the music. Definitely trying this out!
Crime Fighters was definitely an underrated beat 'em up! I wasn't aware of Vendetta being connected to it as well as this game. Thank you for sharing! You might check out the arcade game Brute Force some time, as it is another underrated beat 'em up, also for 3-players.
For a one-off game, this title has a lot of nice little things happening in the background as well as a moveset that rivals the one Streets of Rage or even Final Fight 2 has. Plus extras like cartoon effects too, like getting actually flattened or spun around and dizzied, various little blink and you'll miss it expressions from the cast and enemies, and there's actually a convo that's voiced, something that's rare in games of that era!
Haha, I am not quite sure to be honest as Sunset Riders and Cowboys of Moomesa were less popular videos on my channel. I'll probably cover it anyway at some point though lol
Always thought of this game as a parody of beatemups in general. Glad I actually played this in the arcade, if only for the silliness on the train where you pick up the piglet... and it turned into a football to throw
Thank you very much for another really interesting video.....haven't ever seen or heard about this game before. And i spent my whole teenage years in the arcades, from maro brothers to dance revolution. So you can say i have seen a lot of them. Good work man you have my respect 😊.
I have seen this in arcade emulator game lists but this is the first time I have seen it in action. The in game sprites are huge like Martial Champion. Speaking of Martial Champion, can you cover that game next? I believe it was Konami's first foray into fighting games during the Street Fighter craze.
I loved the games Crime Fighters and Vendetta. It's likely I'd have loved this game, too had I found an arcade machine of it. Crime Fighters had great sights of characters being shocked by signs and squashed by signs and steam rollers. Vendetta had weird items like cacti and flour bags to use as weapons. Both games featured kicks to the balls and the pained reactions of the characters. FWIW, when I played this game a few years ago with two teenage girls, they loved it when I showed them how to do the kick to the balls.
Definitely a wacky beat-'em-up mashup... I've played a little of this; it does seem primarily SOR2-inspired, but also contains visual elements from Cadillacs & Dinosaurs - and even a little Alien vs Predator (my initial impression, at least).
This game is awesome. Only found out about it like 6-months ago, never heard of it before then, certainly never saw it in arcades, but man is it awesome.
This game is a Final Fight clone - power bars are similar. Cody has his blue color, Mike Haggar was color swapped with Guy's color. Guy's knock off still does kicks while wearing Mike's green color. Stages look similar. Even have to rescue Cody's Girl.
This is easily one of my favorite beat-em-up arcade games. Its so silly and over the top, and the cheesy music is the icing on top. Picking up a pig makes it become a football you can throw. I thought that was a funny touch.
It Would be Awesome if you did an Arcade Documentary on other Konami Arcade Games like Lethal Enforcer, Astrix, Vendetta as You Mentioned & Bucky O'hare.
Years in a Pizza Hut in Yazoo City MS, they had a Violent Storm arcade game. The version I've seen and I kid you not, buckets of blood would spew from the characters with every hit.
Boss RED FREDY looks like a boss name Zephyr in Castlevania Dawn of sorrow who has the ability to stop time. That is also developed and produced by Konami.
Hello! Big Daddy TopHat, YEAAAAA So October is around the corner, and is a really spooky one straight out of a Geroge A Romero film, if you know what i mean. Although my poorman's economy wont allow me to support your excellent work on patreon i will dare to suggest anyways a few horror themed beat em ups that probably you already have on your list, like the excellent and underated Night Slashers or even the Splatterhouse series, would be really cool to cover on your channel. There are probably a couple more horror BEU's but those are the only ones that come to my mind at the moment. Greets from Mexico. Keep it up mate. Have a nice one.
For me, it's GOAT (slightly better than Warriors of Fate) in the category of arcade beat'em ups :) Many coins spend on this arcade machine during my childhood. Great game I play to this day (on the phone using Razer Kishi controller).
Nice. I never heard of Violent Storm until people started covering it on TH-cam. Oh! Any chance the Street Fighter II fan port I learned about 8 hours ago either has been touched upon in a video I missed, or could get at least a brief look in a future video?
I only recently played this game and was surprised by how great it was. IMO, Capcom made a mistake in shrinking the sprite size in games after Final Fight. Crowding the screen with large sprites really ups the energy of the experience. I’ll take this over Cadillacs and Dinosaurs any day.
Bid daddy should review GANG WARS or BURNING FIGHT , simply because back in the day, BURNING FIGHT was claimed to be SNK answer to FINAL FIGHT and that is an interesting topic.
There's technically 3 James Cameron references in this game, the aforementioned mech suit boss, the industrial plant with the presses and the metal smelting plant are both Terminator references. Or maybe I'm reading too much into this.
This is Final fight ultimat, I dont see similarity with Streets of Rage. I used to make it to the final boss with 1 coin but it was hard to defeat with one coin, if you finish the game you start over. I don't think it was Konami's answer to Streets of Rage, but to Capcom (their main arcade rival in the genre). I can see some similarities to Cadillac & dinosaurs (style and gameplay) and Hokuto no Ken (post apocalyptic world).
It would be nice if they put all these games in one collection and put them on the Nintendo Switch. A physical version would be nice too but I know that won't happen.
Still rate this as one of the best beat 'em ups ever. Not much to look at, but the gameplay is just so good it's untrue. I was really taken aback by it.

Yes, he even laughs and says:
_"Tickets please!"_
I hope you cover the Battletoads arcade game soon. That one was loads of fun.
Check the archive he covered it weeks ago
I like the latest one too
Oh WOW!!!Battletoads was my game 🎮
How about an episode on 'Crime Fighters', or it's sequel, 'Vendetta'. Both of which predated 'Violent Storm'.
I own a 4 player Vendetta machine and have a Crime Fighters board which I swap in and out every once in a while. Vendetta is my preferred beat em up of that era. Such a great time!

maaaan i remember the music in this game being truly amazing!! Konami really smashed it with the soundtrack
Never played this one. But Konami definitely delivered something unique. Amazing how many beat em ups existed over time. Main thing is the experience it delivers when you "insert coin", then choose player one or two.
YES!!! Please cover CRIME FIGHTERS! I am still disappointed that Crime Fighters was never ported to a home console or a dedicated handheld system.
Nothing compliments a new upload quite like a "YEEEAAAAAAAAH!"
And I have to mention that Violent Storm was the final arcade beat em' up by KONAMI.
I'm glad I got to play it while it was at my local theatre.
@@joshfraley8019 LUCKY GUY ;)
@@captaincommando2602 You can play it via MAME nowadays.

I love looking at huge 2D sprites.
Me too... Gotta love those huge double-D's. 😆
Same here. I especially like when the bosses say their silly one-liners.
I love this soundtrack collection... EPIC Game ! 😳
Played this game good few times worth playing Violent Storm great fun and hilarious with some cool tunes you will enjoy it if you love fighting games!
Looking forward to your coverage of Crime Fighters and Vendetta. Keep up the fantastic work!
Konami had TMNT, Simpsons, and X-Men so they certainly had their share of beat 'em ups.
He clearly mentioned that you must’ve ran to the comment section with the video on pause.
Duh
I hope everyone is having a bless Sunday we at PLC just wanted to send positive vibes to everyone in the comments

The sprites seem really washed out too. I had never heard of this game. Thanks for the great work as always!
I never heard of this game. I would have played the hell out of this game.
My local bowling alley had a Violent Storm machine and I sunk many a coin into it.
I like how the chefs are shocked to see people fighting, but the belly dancer continues her routine like nothing is out of the ordinary.
It's like a cluster fuck of things going on all at the same time lol

This was honestly the best beat 'em up Konami had made. It's such a shame it never left the arcades, though.
