    Just to clarify, when Walt told everyone to hold when the train was about to move, he had _already_ gotten the methylamine. He was holding because they hadn't replaced all the water yet, and that weight difference would've given them away. It was risky but not necessarily greed, just keeping Homeland Security off his ass.

      @doctaflo 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      i don’t think that’s right.
      haven’t watched the whole thing in a while, but I had the impression water was going in while methylamine was coming-i remember it bugging me, like aren’t they diluting their own methylamine? -but yeah, the counter Walt is watching is going up, and it starts BEFORE they turn the water on.
      i think Walt just wants the even 10,000 gallons bc that was the plan, and he’s incapable of compromise

    • @1080lights
      @1080lights 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@doctafloI don’t think they diluted it very much. Even though water is denser, they were filling it from the top while methylamine was emptied from the bottom. Actual mixing still requires time. And this is still methylamine in aqueous solution. A small amount of a bit more water won’t change much.

    • @doctaflo
      @doctaflo 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@1080lights yep, that’s exactly what i ended up telling myself to make peace with the scene - just seemed out of scope to bring up in my original comment;
      really i mentioned the “dilution objection” as a way to say, “hey, i do have a specific memory of this ancient scene, so maybe my take on his rationale for the cutoff point is also accurate.”
      so do you agree he was waiting for the methylamine counter to hit 10K or do you think they were only filling water at that time like OP says?

      @ReelToScreen 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@KyleBaran90 The split of Season 5 into two parts was largely a business decision aimed at maximizing revenue, building hype, and maintaining the show’s visibility for a longer period. It also gave the writers more room to create suspense and set up a highly anticipated final run of episodes. splitting the final season of major TV shows had become a common practice. Other series like The Sopranos and Mad Men also adopted this strategy, partly because it kept fans engaged for longer and allowed networks to capitalize on popular shows during their final runs.

    Everything from before is called back in episode 8: The fly. The ticking watch. The same painting is in the hotel that Walt saw in his therapy session after the "fugue state" in season 2. The damaged paper towel dispenser. Lydia repeats Tuco's line: "We're gonna make a lot of money together." Walt repeats Mike's line: "Learn to take 'yes' for an answer." Walt repeats Jane's question to Jesse: "Who's we?" Uncle Jack repeats Jesse's "plan" about shooting Tuco: "Boom, boom, boom." Skyler repeats Gus' line from before the superlab reveal: "Take a drive with me." Walt and Jesse reminisce about old times. At the end on the patio, before it shows the family, the shots are staged and shot in the same exact way as the season 2 Pink Teddy Bear flash-forward. Walt jr. does a peekaboo to Holly, like Jesse did to the methheads' kid. Walt Jr. gets called away by Louis when he's with Skyler and Marie, just like in the third episode of season 1. And, of course, Gale's book of poetry. The past is not gone. The sins are not erased.

    I love the juxtaposition of starting off the season with the birthday bacon compared to starting off the show the same way. At first, he's a character we sympathize with, and he makes some bad choices. Very quickly, he starts to do questionable things. It becomes harder and harder to defend him. Then, in season 5, at the _peak_ of his vanity and avarice, he's just an irredeemable, rampaging villain. It's a cool arc to see a main character go through. It's a constant vacillation between "he needs to get his comeuppance" and "I really wanna see how this continues to play out."

    27:00 In my opinion, Outcome 2 wasn't Jesse tells her the truth, so now Walt has "permission" to kill her and her son. As terrible as you think Walt has become, he's still not that far gone. Instead, I think Walt expected that, if Jesse were to tell her the truth, she'd leave. (Don't forget her recent history with her young brother.) So, in both scenarios, she's out of the picture.

    57:50 I actually don't agree with Mike, that Walter blew it up. Walter went against Gus to save Jesse's life when he ran over & shot those dealers. Let's not forget Gus and Mike wanted Jesse dead at first, and Walter stopped that from happening. After that, Gus wasn't gonna let that go, so Walter acted in self-defense

    The sad thing is that people very much still rode hard for Walt into this season and it shows from the amount of hate Anna Gunn received, despite the fact Skyler's worst crimes are...being a little bit of a Karen? And trying to escape an abusive situation and protect her children? She's literally still voted as a "most hated character" in polls to this day alongside characters who are serial killers and child abusers. It drives me crazy.

      I was late to the whole breaking bad thing and I was aware of the Skyler hate. I was like "she's not...bad?" In every other scene. The worst thing I could say is in season 2-ish scenes with her meant I'm not watching the more interesting stories in the show. I think it just speaks to how gullible audiences can be that they can't see past the top layer of what a show wants you to experience. Show is from Walt's perspective, she's his mildly nagging wife and he's going through life or death situations. I can never understand the people who think she's controlling just cause she's like "veggie bacon to watch our cholesterol". It's like...have you guys had a mother?

    • @EdenMB-w3x

      She’s still a criminal. She deserves prison time.

    • @MJKeenan30
      @MJKeenan30 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Her worst crime was being controlling and self-absorbed, which ground Walt down over time, leading to him lashing out and becoming the monster he eventually became at the end. It's demonstrated in the pilot with the veggie bacon and the half-hearted hj for his birthday. She is hated because tons of men are stuck in relationships with controlling harpies just like her.
      Oh, and there is the cheating with her boss too.
      People who send hate to an actor for portraying a terrible person are idiots, but there are plenty of reasons to hate the character itself.

    I pretty much align with Simone’s reactions to morally ambiguous characters. I don’t care that some characters are “bad people” - people have good traits and bad traits and there is a LOT to admire with Mike. It’s not just that he’s entertaining on screen - he clearly cares about his family, he has a personal strength and control about him in dangerous situations that we would all love to have, he seems to be as loyal as possible, and he’s straightforward with people. I can notice these things and like it while also acknowledging that he’s done horrible things for personal gain lol

    When Mike mentioned shooting Jesse James it's a reference to Robert Ford, the man who was obsessed with and actually killed Jesse James and that is depicted very well in a film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck called "The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford", which is an excellent film.
    And of course Jesse James was famous for robbing trains.
