Driver wiper quit working. Saw your video on possibly the bolt is loose. That's what it was. I'm a full time college student and broke. You saved me some money. Thank you!
Thanks for this amazing video. My wipers stopped working on a rainy day and after watching your video, I had the confidence to fix it myself. My motor was ok but the extra info you provided helped me. Thanks again.
Eric you give the best and most professional ways to repair a vehicle with a nice slow explanation.I use your videos to repair my vehicles all the time.Thank You Very Much.
Thanks very much Eric. This is at least the 4th time I've found one of your videos helpful after watching more than a few by other folks that were either unhelpful or hard to watch for one reason or another. I'm still grateful to anyone who puts videos up, but next time I will check EricTheCarGuy first.
At 14:35, listen about the ice on the wipers. Even after installing a "new Linkage with new motor", the wipers still got out of sync in Canada from frozen thick ice. Simply very bad luck, and it happened only 2 months after installing new parts. I never new that this could be so complicated. So guys, get a real mechanic if you don't wanna lose any downtime.
You can sometimes find those plastic things in the Help isle at the auto parts store... sometimes they'll even fit your car. The biggest and most annoying wiper problem I've had is with my old Ford Crown Vic. The wipers would either park vertical or on a random place on the windshield. I rebuilt the motor, replaced the motor, swapped the switch, and even took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts to no avail. Eventually I traded it in for a Jeep.
Great video Eric except for one small detail…. YOU NEED TO REMEMBER WHAT POSITION THE OLD LINK IS IN WHEN PUTTING IN THE NEW ONE now my wiper goes down before it goes up and stops in the middle of my windshield. Thanks man now I gotta start all over again!
Thanks. I have a C3500 Chevy truck. Pulling or installing the wiper transmission is awful. The mounting is awful. The electrical connector latch is hidden. This design was not well engineered. Just means a lot of grief for repairs. Thank you. Your video showed me what to do. I just have to deal with the bad layout of my particular vehicle. I am 75 YO, so hard is really hard for this old guy (LOL). Getting the linkage in/out is terrible! OK, now I am whining!
I like your style in this video. You have the same attitude like you had in your earlier videos. Your direct and you get to the point with what you doing. Very nice video.
Yeah I see people been really bashing him lately with his lack of doing repair videos.. Might not have the work coming in his shop I imagine. Can't fix it if it's not there. Or he has just been getting burned out?
Quick tip: 1. If your wipers failed in, or can still go to the parked position - put down some masking tape on the glass to mark where the blades sit. Also make note on the tilt of the blade, this can make up an inch on some cars - and an inch off the adjustment mark may mean your wipers will hit the A-pillar when going up. Quick tip 2: Be very careful when pulling the wiper arms, especially if trying it the way Eric did here (by pushing them down). On many cars, the transfer mechanism to the wiper arm goes, -through- the windshield glass. VERY easy to crack the windscreen if not using a wiper arm puller - and replacing your windscreen is going to cost quite a lot more than buying/renting/borrowing a wiper arm puller.
Saw your video, did exactly what you said, and viola, problem fixed in 15 minutes! You Mainers are so resourceful. If anyone says to me, "Mainers are resourceful" I will say "I guess maybe!"
Love your repair videos, Eric, even when they address problems I'm not currently experiencing. I have had wiper problems in the past, though, and know they're not usually too hard to fix. Bravo!
Too bad these videos weren't released before December. It would be like you were holding our hands. But i suppose these kind of issues are pretty easy and self explanatory.
+EricTheCarGuy Having and issue where mine only run on the high setting. Replaced the switch for my 2010 Avenger SXT already. The arms seem solid. I'm thinking I need to replace the motor. Any thoughts?
Hey Eric, I love your videos very very much! Especially because you think about other things that may go wrong, and always suggesting an alternative. This is just AWESOME! Nobody else even tries to give additional info, Just about the specific issue. That's why you rock, ERIC!!
You had given a tip to use Silicone Spray on the door seals(in another video) in the winter time so they don't freeze the door shut. I ended up trying it on my wipers and my wipers haven't stuck to the windshield for the rest of the winter. So that's something that people can try too if they are having issues with their wipers sticking to the window.
Had to replace the wiper motor on my mom's '94 Saturn once. Had to take the upper part of the dash out to remove the bolts, and even getting to them from there was a challenge. That's not to mention getting the motor out of the tight pocket it sits in up above the firewall under the hood. Other than that, it's been a nice reliable car, barely had to do any work to it its entire life.
Thank you for this! 4 people have 'fixed' my wipers, INCLUDING my mechanic. After watching this, I feel like I can fix them myself! They crossed once, causing the driver side wiper bolt to become loose. My mechanic tightened the bolt, then put some type of goop on it to keep the bolt from coming loose again. Needless to say, they worked one day, then they same problem happened again. I'm guessing I need to replace that bolt, and possibly the arm, then make sure they are positioned correctly before using them, or they will cross and get hung up again. Thanks again for making me feel like I can do this, or at least direct someone else HOW to do it.
i have a ford probe with the same engine in it that this car does. i'm having to change out the starter motor in it now. from what i see so far it's quite an adventure to get to. love the videos, keep up the good work and stay dirty
another important thing when it comes to visalibility,if you use one of those sunshades to keep the heat from your car in summer,be sure to remove it before starting your trip.
The little plastic joint thing can be found in an assortment at Autozone. They are very cheap but they are a pain in the ass to get them into the hole they need to go in. They are used in wiper assemblies and window regulators but they will be labeled for window regulators. Again they are a big pain in the ass and you save a lot of time by just replacing the whole assembly as you have mentioned here.
Thank you very much for making this video. I watched it myself then fixed it myself it took me 3 hours though but saved me 474$. ended up that the wipers motor died. :)
Sometimes this works. I had a 1985 corolla. The wiper motor quit and I just happen to have a good used one on my spare shelf. I needed to get to work. So, being in a hurry. I just removed the motor and unplugged the actuator arm joint. Grabbed the arm through the hole and socked it on the new motor unit. Put the bolts back and plugged it in. Fixed it in 10 min. Got to work on time.
Any more wiper videos? I'm looking at a 2007 civic with non-working wipers. The motor has been changed but they still don't work. Just wondering if there was a typical problem with the 2007 civic model in terms of wipers.
Do you know how to remove the rear wiper motor and grommet from the rear hatch of a 2004 Ford Taurus Station Wagon, I have removed the fasteners holing the motor in place and it won't budge.
Hi Eric, I got a 2002 Dodge Caravan. The wiper doesn't work or move when I turn it on. What do you think I should do best? Replace the wiper motor or check something out first? Thanks.
Been plastic gears in the wiper motors since the late 60's. Another common problem is the transmission arm on the motor. They strip the splines and you lose the wipers.
BIL has a Kia that has stripped the arm 3 times. Took the MIG and welded the nut to the arm then welded the nut to the motor shaft!! Bet it doesn't strip the arm again!!
Never had this problem on my old 59 Bug, didn't have a park on the wipers, you just pushed the switch in at the right moment! Can't expect drivers to perform such manual tasks these days.
Eric do you have a recommendation for a wiper that works normal on low/high but stops in random locations and intermittent mode doesn't go full cycle??? Thanks for the great video!
hey Eric,..i have an Toyota Yaris 2012 HB France made Manual 6 gear, and am facing some issue with accessories current, basically the symptom are that the electric steering assistance, touch radio, electric windows front and back, safety belt indicator all of thus are not working also the front and back wiper , it great if you can advise if you faced this kind of stuff
Informative video, thanks. Will have to do this for my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. The motor works, but front wipers don't. You answered the question whether it may just need the bars replaced. Also, I have a 93 Nissan pick up that seems to work in overdrive with one speed. How can I slow it down? Have a feeling lots of things were removed on the this pu while painting for the previous owner. Would it have a park switch? They never seem to go down completely either. Had one before and it seemed to work normal.
I have a 2004 Nissan Sentra and I'n not getting power at all from the switch to the motor. the fuse is good. so i replaced the wiper switch and motor and still no power at all. the motor connector looks good and not burnt out or anything. do you think the wiring to the wiper switch and motor went bad?
Hey Eric! From your video it looks like there isn't a "measurement" that needs to be done when putting back wiper arms. I recently removed wiper arm(driver side) from my car as I needed to access the cowl. When I put it back, I just did it from my memory and don't know if I aligned it properly as it was before.

Hi, Eric. Excellent video. What kind of gloves do you wear? Are they anything in particular? Been a mechanic for 16 years and recently started to suffer from contact dermatitis and rubber gloves are the problem.
I guess one exception to the universal wiper mechanism constructions are those Mercedes that have those over complicated single wipers that extend and contract. I think some other luxury cars have this same mechanism but only on the passenger wiper.
Hello EricTheCarGuy can you give me any pointers on a problem I'm having with the wipers on my 97 Toyota Glanza turbo.. I've been having issues with the driver side windshield wiper on my truck, bout 4days ago it started moving out of sync with the other wiper and it would go to the far left of the driver side completely off the windshield and it would just wiggle back and forth til I pushed it back. This happened during a pretty heavy rain while I was driving and has been doing it since which has lead me to stop driving while it's raining (it's always raining) so it's inconvenient... my arm isnt attached. i opened it, attached it, everything was fine for a couple days until i put it on high/fast. it snapped out again. motors fine like i said how do i fix this or will a mechanic charge me alot?
I rember when my mom's nissan quest had a failure... it was due to the rivet attaching the arms to the motor crank. The arms, pivot, and crank were on a single giant plastic frame... I fixed it by replacing the bad rivet with a stainless bolt and nut.
Hey ETCG im having a problem with my wiper motor i think, searched everywhere and havent found anything. i have a video on my channel showing the problems. Thanks!
Hi Mr Eric, my Subaru Legacy 02 has a problem with the wipers, they hit the plastic wind shield bottom cover and the one on the left side hit the left wind shield cover, and they don't stop at the rest location, they stop any where, what it could be?
I opened the motor, all gears are in good shape, the grease was thick, I cleaned up the gears and put new clean grease, still not working properly, the three plastic parts which is holding the moving arms are causing some play, do you think they are the reason for this problem?
I've heard leaving the wipers up overnight is not a great idea since it stretches the springs that hold them down and therefore makes the wipers less effective.
I have to do this on my 95 Maxima. It looks like the same exact motor just reversed orientation. I tried to get it out but I had to much snow and ice built up on the cowell ( spell check thought I was trying to spell cowbell so I’m sure I misspelled it lol) anyway I’m going to have to pull it in the garage and let it thaw out first.
Driver wiper quit working. Saw your video on possibly the bolt is loose. That's what it was. I'm a full time college student and broke. You saved me some money. Thank you!
I'm not mechanically inclined, but this was really easy to follow. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for this amazing video. My wipers stopped working on a rainy day and after watching your video, I had the confidence to fix it myself. My motor was ok but the extra info you provided helped me. Thanks again.
Great timing on this. My wife's driver wiper just went limp. This will help me navigate the repair with a little more confidence.

Thank you soooo much for your help! Just had to tighten down the nut! Saved me a trip to the shop and probably a few bucks! My man!!!!!!!!!!
These are the kind of videos I like to watch.

Sorry for the puns.
Love your work.

+Kamar , probably, that's what I had to on my mercury.(only worked on high) It was a beast of a job. you can hardly see the motor
Totally helped man! I had one moving and one not and all I had to do was tighten! Awesome

Pretty disappointed to find plastic gears in there like some child's toy. Especially on something important, like being able to see.
There's no end to the plastic junk on cars any more...
Been plastic gears in the wiper motors since the late 60's. Another common problem is the transmission arm on the motor. They strip the splines and you lose the wipers.
Oh yeah.. always fixing those in the shop. Grab a flat head and a 13mm and head to the lot lol

Lol Yep FIXED haha
Eric you are a clever man! thanks so much, now i shall fix my wipers!
also doing the struts its easier to pull that all off toooooooooo.... great video
Never had this problem on my old 59 Bug, didn't have a park on the wipers, you just pushed the switch in at the right moment! Can't expect drivers to perform such manual tasks these days.
mh. Ford Puma's wipers are perfect for scraping ice from my windshield and/or freeing it from snow :D

Sir Eric, I want to see a video. How to overhaul the engine of VW beetle 2000-2001 yr model
I have a Mazda 626 1995 & i can see my driver side wiper is detached from the mont in the center. how do i connect it again or mont it back?
hey Eric,..i have an Toyota Yaris 2012 HB France made Manual 6 gear, and am facing some issue with accessories current, basically the symptom are that the electric steering assistance, touch radio, electric windows front and back, safety belt indicator all of thus are not working also the front and back wiper , it great if you can advise if you faced this kind of stuff
had one wiper not working. tightened the nut and presto. thanks for the post super helpful.
You can use masking tape on the windshield so you can mark the spot where the wiper are supposed to go
Informative video, thanks. Will have to do this for my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. The motor works, but front wipers don't. You answered the question whether it may just need the bars replaced. What is it called with the white clip u popped off with the crow bar?? It broke in my lancer and i cant find the name for it??
Excellent clear instructions.Thanks.
How timely, I'll be doing this next week!
The wipers on my 99 f150 are not getting no turning, I checked the wires and they have power, what do you think is causing this issue? thanks
i am looking for a windshield wiper transmission linkages compleet or the plastic bougie for mazda 626 sedan 1988 right stear
Great, informative video. Thank you.
Hey Eric, I see a new type of gloves. Nice! :)
Hey Eric! From your video it looks like there isn't a "measurement" that needs to be done when putting back wiper arms. I recently removed wiper arm(driver side) from my car as I needed to access the cowl. When I put it back, I just did it from my memory and don't know if I aligned it properly as it was before.
Every time I watch one of your videos I feel the urge to go and fix something
I once had a 99 Ford Taurus that I made the mistake by turning the wipers onon an extremely cold morning, the wipers ended up being frozen to the windshield and the linkage(transmission) snapped. It was a hard job to repair but being out in the freezing cold sure does suck. Sometimes things dont work well with gloves on.
try to link the wiper arm to the throttle cable, this way you can either rev the engine from outside the hood, or when you accelerate you can wipe your windshield
EricTheCarGuy hey, could you do a tutorial or video on how to take out an engine? Im wanna take mine out to look over things and know where everything js at but i dknt know how, its a 1978 F150,i doubt you have that truck sittjng around but would it be possible to do the vid? Thank you!
Another great video!
Slick gloves, sir :)
Thanks ETCG! This helps me out.
Eric ,, have 1 question, my Acura legend wiper do not turn off,, once you active the wiper it just would not turn off, I disconnected all the really and the power wire from the switch yet it will not turn off, when I disconnect the power to the motor then it stop, but why its not working good, the really are good, and I have a lot of really for that car, the intermittent do not work , and it dose not turn off?? need some help thanks ...
I tried to do a shallow stream crossing that was unavoidable and the engine bay got very wet, the car stalled out and wouldnt start again for a good hour. Everything was fine after this but now the wipers come on intermittently when i'm driving (without the wiper switch being turned on). Sometimes they stay on until i stop the car and sometimes they turn off after a minute or so. Any ideas??
Great job explaining things.
here's one; would it be possible to replace the motor by not removing any of the plastic trim pieces?
I've been having issues with the driver side windshield wiper on my truck, bout 4days ago it started moving out of sync with the other wiper and it would go to the far left of the driver side completely off the windshield and it would just wiggle back and forth til I pushed it back. This happened during a pretty heavy rain while I was driving and has been doing it since which has lead me to stop driving while it's raining (it's always raining) so it's inconvenient... Do you have any idea what may be the cause or what steps I need to take to fix it?
Thank you for the video, I was able to fix my wiper blade.
If you change one wiper arm do you have to change both wiper arms that's what I'm asking
have a 94 toyota 4x4,wipers sometimes will not turn off until you turn the key off...any ideas?
my arm isnt attached. i opened it, attached it, everything was fine for a couple days until i put it on high/fast. it snapped out again. motors fine like i said how do i fix this or will a mechanic charge me alot?
Mine stop working, hopefully its a quick fix that doesn't require me to buy a new motor but if so, oh well. nice video!
Have an 03 Accord LX. Wipers slam down when there in operation. Any clues on how to fix that?
How much did that set you back? If you don't mind me asking
Lol I used to own a 95 YJ...you always see your wipers :-p great video as always sir.
ETCG1 ur the man no really its true, the man.
Thank you -- very professional.
What should I use to lubricate the wiper linkage? WD40 wont stay there long...
Thanks for the pointers...
mine won't turn off. They are always on medium speed, unless I put them on high. I just replaced the switch but it didn't help. 97 civic ex.
Thanks for another useful video
What about when on level 1 the blades go up but don't come down yet on levels 2 and 3 they go up and down with no issues?
awesome video very helpful
Eric! Can you do a video on a rear wiper assembly? I have to fix the one on my moms trailblazer lol
Thanks!
I just replace my linkage, why its moving down a little bit first before moving up?
Hi Mr Eric, my Subaru Legacy 02 has a problem with the wipers, they hit the plastic wind shield bottom cover and the one on the left side hit the left wind shield cover, and they don't stop at the rest location, they stop any where, what it could be?
I opened the motor, all gears are in good shape, the grease was thick, I cleaned up the gears and put new clean grease, still not working properly, the three plastic parts which is holding the moving arms are causing some play, do you think they are the reason for this problem?
+thesniperofcs I mean by the moving arms the on are connected to the motor not the ones are holding the wipers
"Silicone spray is your friend when installing rubber stuff" -9:35 that's what she said

"Hardest part is probably gonna be fishing this through that hole" -10:15
Reminds me of my speedo gears, one tooth missing, and that's the last km it counted for a while.
great videos, but you should remove all leaves or you may have to do another drain video!
De ice spray on windshield might prevent this
Is de ice spray bad for the paint?
I've heard leaving the wipers up overnight is not a great idea since it stretches the springs that hold them down and therefore makes the wipers less effective.
On my '02 Focus was pretty difficult to pull the motor off.
What brand of ratchets was that guy using in the Pixies-Bag Boy vid?
