The firefly bush is such a good implementation of fireflies, giving players control over the effect! It even gives a small light level. Really makes me wonder why the torchflower doesn't emit light, being 100 times harder to obtain and having TORCH in the name.
I don't think it was ever that simple; in one of their youtube series, Mojang implied that they shelved fireflies *temporarily* to come up with something else for them to actually do, since being frog food was fireflies' *one* use. The spawning mechanics for them we got in this snapshot make them a lot easier to use in builds, so it seems like Mojang settled on ambience being their use.

Anyway, a visual pixel of texture (texel) is not tied to the size in world or the emissiveness. So it can be any number of texels and still be tiny, just having more interesting visual nuance.
8:24 Well, they're sensitive to light, so that means they only emit particles when THEY are in the dark. It doesn't exactly matter what day it is. It just reacts to light levels it's in, which means if you place one in a dark cave, it will be active 24/7
For some reason, I thought the cow's snout always stuck out. Mandela Effect. And Keralis finally gets his Booshes! (I've been wanting them for so long, too). Also, Firefly + Bush = The Glare. In bush form. It would be great, though, if you could capture the lightning bugs (fireflies) in a jar as a variable light source. Another use for the particles - snowflakes. They're mostly white, so in a snowy biome, it can mimic snow blowing around.
Idea: you should be able to take a glass bottle to the firefly particle effect and use it (like you do with dragons breath) to collect a bottle of firefly's. You should then be able to use it to brew a bottle of glowing. Also by crafting four bottles together in a grid you should get a jar of firefly's which you could then place and rotate (like a head) and it would be a light source.
It would work better if you did this by clicking the firefly bush, rather than the particles. Maybe it would also work as a way to turn a regular bush into a firefly bush and vice-versa.

The firefly bush could have some very cool building applications, the big one that I can think of is making planetariums with black concrete, and then the fireflies will look like stars!
this isnt an issue with realism, it's an issue with communicating positives and negatives in a realistic setting you can feed a cookie to a parrot to kill it instantly because it's bad for parrots they arent afraid of letting mobs be harmed, they just dont want to say animals doing plausible things that are encouraged mechanics being bad irl there also wasnt any reason to add fireflies that kill frogs naturally since they both spawn regardless and would lead to emptier swamps and fireflies were already a performance nightmare so no reason to try and make it work bees being poisoned by eyeblossoms are a recent example that ppl bring up but its not comparable tl;dr, mojang doesnt want gameplay to encourage harmful behavior, not inaccuracies or harming mobs ingame outright
Glad to see they finally added the Wooly Cows from Minecraft Earth and Dungeons! I just hope the texture is tweaked to resemble it’s Dungeons/Earth counterparts a little more, the top fur should look a bit more like a bright Orange/tan to me.
I think it's actually even better on bedrock cos it makes new flowers in a radius instead of directly adjacent, so it looks natural and you can click one flower more (which is useful on the pocket edition)
It's crazy how they put the firefly block at the end of the video on the Mojang channel. Like "oh by the way we've also got this", as if we haven't been asking them for years
i think they edited the mushroom cows texture because of the uv maps, not because its going to have new variants. They use the regular cow 3d model, so the textures needed to update.
100% this. The cold pigs had an extra layer of textures wrapped around them and I'm pretty sure the new cold cow is the same. Probably keeping the textures for both the body and the "shell" in the same texture file which means they now have to use double the height if they're storing both in the same. Also means there might be an untextured shell on top of the normal cows/pigs as well which could be textured by resource pack creators. Maybe the same for the mooshrooms.
I don't even know how are they possibly gonna add new cold and warm variants to those as well, since, well, they can't even spawn in cold and warm biomes in the first place
Hopefully with the addition of more ambient particles and sounds, we'll get windy weather and more water particle animations. This update is looking great so far!
imo the Firefly Bush shouldn't glow when it can't spawn particles... That way players can use it as a second regular bush option without the glowing lights messing with the vibes.
Making them simple particle effects is the best choice they could’ve gone with, since it’s unlikely the fireflies as mobs would’ve had complex ai to begin with, nor would really drop anything important. Best to not clog up the entity cap with them so now more can be shown alongside other mobs. Only thing I’d like for them to add is the ability to craft the bush into a firefly lantern, perhaps a slightly different color to the other two and maybe a lower light level but most importantly having the pixels inside go between lit up and unlit for a cool animated texture.
OMG the firefly bush is AMAZING!!!! we've needed something like this for a LONG time!!!! This is SOOOO nice ^_^ I'm excited, this will make building magic themed areas so nice, we've been missing something like this for a LONG time.

8:46 Yes Xisuma, firefly are considered bugs 😜
I am liking this fresh coat of paint on all the existing content
This video is so much better put together and far more informative than the one released on the official minecraft youtube channel
2:06 IRL the babies never have full-sized horns. The horns should be removed from the textures of the baby cows.
NOOOOOOO
They can just hide the horn part of the model on the baby cows
Minecraft isn't supposed to be realistic
Yeah. the baby goats doesn't have horns.
I think no horns would look odd but you did say full sized horns, i could def see them making the babies have single pixel little horns
I like the cow variants a heck of a lot more than the pig variants.
i know right. i love the cow with the hair
The firefly bush could have some very cool building applications, the big one that I can think of is making planetariums with black concrete, and then the fireflies will look like stars!
Omg I didn’t like that they’re white but you just changed my mind completely 🤩
They stole half of the firefly from us
Mojang HQ while discussing fireflies: We cannot give them 2 pixels, that is excessive, outrageous!!!
1 pixel and it already seem too much to me...
The ender eye pop sound is the join and leave sound on my server pitched down when leaving, sounds great.
Im loving the fact theyre finally adding more ambience, absolutely fantastic
Frogs don't eat fireflies say the people who give you apples from oak trees.
Or how does meters and tons of materials, trees and buildings just float
Not the same people actually
Fireflies are poisonous! No fireflies for you! Now stop complaining and eat your delicious fly agaric mushroom soup....
Technically Notch did that before leaving ;)
this isnt an issue with realism, it's an issue with communicating positives and negatives in a realistic setting
you can feed a cookie to a parrot to kill it instantly because it's bad for parrots
they arent afraid of letting mobs be harmed, they just dont want to say animals doing plausible things that are encouraged mechanics being bad irl
there also wasnt any reason to add fireflies that kill frogs naturally since they both spawn regardless and would lead to emptier swamps and fireflies were already a performance nightmare so no reason to try and make it work
bees being poisoned by eyeblossoms are a recent example that ppl bring up but its not comparable
tl;dr, mojang doesnt want gameplay to encourage harmful behavior, not inaccuracies or harming mobs ingame outright
Love these variants. Adds so much more detail and immersion.
First thought has to be about the horned baby cows - OUCH!
Glad to see they finally added the Wooly Cows from Minecraft Earth and Dungeons! I just hope the texture is tweaked to resemble it’s Dungeons/Earth counterparts a little more, the top fur should look a bit more like a bright Orange/tan to me.
3:21 I hope they port over the fact that you can do this with flowers in Bedrock Edition over to Java Edition...
I think it's actually even better on bedrock cos it makes new flowers in a radius instead of directly adjacent, so it looks natural and you can click one flower more (which is useful on the pocket edition)
Thanks for giving a good comprehensive update without being loud and flashy
It's crazy how they put the firefly block at the end of the video on the Mojang channel. Like "oh by the way we've also got this", as if we haven't been asking them for years
I'm really liking these details they've been adding recently. Finally making the nature fresher and more lived in in this game.
as a scotsman, highland coos lets go
I’d love to see black-faced sheep variants and an ability to turn the beacon beam off but keep the beacon on
i think they edited the mushroom cows texture because of the uv maps, not because its going to have new variants.
Moobloom or glare might be added and maybe the the sniffer gets more plants?
I love highland cows so Im happy they are finally in minecraft
i didn't realize how emotionally attached i have gotten to the 2 pixle firefly, these little ones just look sad and gray
appreciate you dropping these updates
imo the Firefly Bush shouldn't glow when it can't spawn particles... That way players can use it as a second regular bush option without the glowing lights messing with the vibes.
this is the real wild update
We got an alive version of dead bushes, now we need an alive version of rotten flesh.
Harvested from villagers, of course.
Fresh flesh

Making them simple particle effects is the best choice they could’ve gone with, since it’s unlikely the fireflies as mobs would’ve had complex ai to begin with, nor would really drop anything important. Best to not clog up the entity cap with them so now more can be shown alongside other mobs.
Only thing I’d like for them to add is the ability to craft the bush into a firefly lantern, perhaps a slightly different color to the other two and maybe a lower light level but most importantly having the pixels inside go between lit up and unlit for a cool animated texture.
Hooray for the firefly!
OMG the firefly bush is AMAZING!!!! we've needed something like this for a LONG time!!!! This is SOOOO nice ^_^ I'm excited, this will make building magic themed areas so nice, we've been missing something like this for a LONG time.
Finally, the wild update part 7
This drop is turning out to be one of the best game updates ever
I wish they added a more generec cow variant like the white cow with black spots
Thank you for talking over the whole section of the ambient sound within the sand biome xD
I hope we get variants for hostile mobs as well, a zombie wearing a t shirt in a snow biome makes no sense
zombies dont exactly feel much now do they
i mean we have strays and husks so we could see the inverse both ways!
they're adding all of the fun little extras which I rely on texture packs for to the base game, very much appreciated
Now we just need fireflies in a jar as a light source.
I can already hear and see this ambiance in all of those creative builds
This drop is going to be The Wilder Wild
Hope they make the bush bigger, because it looks more like a shrub right now
Still salty we didn't vote for the Moobloom......
Highland cows for the cold! Perfect.
Fireflies!!
So excited! Lots of fun new things :D
