I discovered Gojira and Mario Duplantier in 2015-16 and as a drummer of 40+ yrs he redefined for me syncopation double bass and tasty ride and cymbal work!!! LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY GOJIRA LOL 🖤🤘
Been metal drumming since 1982, been to 400 plus shows. Took my 16 year old son to his 2nd only show at our local venue to see LOG. Knew nothing of openers Gojira. Not long later got to see them on the smallest stage @ Rock on the Range, here in Columbus, Ohio Snuck him backstage got great pics and conversations. We both chuckle about the Olympics. Well deserved
This is amazing!!! Mario seems like such an incredible guy. I would love to see Carter Beauford or David from Electric Callboy on here one of these times
Mario's English is getting better year by year, I love it. You can hear the enthusiasm in his talking because he can better express his playing style and his gear of choice
@@konstahavukainen5852 During the final section when he’s playing live and he stands up you can see the left pedal is a DW 5000. Before that scene I recognized the beater as well lol. I used 9000’s for 16 years so I know DW beaters when I see em.
For anyone wondering, the thing attached to the drum throne is called a Buttkicker. It is used to transfer low end energy into your throne when stage volume is controlled.
For Lars haters: take note of what Mario says at 6:43. Being a point of reference in arts does not necessarily imply being a technical Maestro. It’s more about inspiring future geniuses.
Mario is also a very loyal guy. He has mentioned other drummers that he likes, but Lars Ulrich was the one who inspired him as a kid. Mario was an avid soccer player as a kid and Lars was a tennis player in Denmark. Hyperkid energy translates really well into drumming.
I remember an old Metal Injection interview where Joe and Mario were interviewed in the back of a U-Haul truck, they must have been touring the states on FMTS. 2006. Mario didn't speak English, so Joe had to translate for him. Man they've come such a deservedly long way 🥹❤️
Great interview! This is the Modern Drummer that I would go without dinner to buy, back in ye olde college days. Like every young drummer I read and reread each copy of MD, interviews with drummers I had never heard of, but I would track down the records they were on and try to figure out what they were doing! I still have 5 years worth of my MD's stored in the drum room. Now I can download 5 more years! Thanks Guys! M
I agree 100% with Mario...that dang Ride Bell is definitely part of the main Gojira sound...and even though I'm sure lots of other drummers out there are using the same ride, my brain only seems to recognize it and align it with Gojira! Great stuff~!
Mario Please bring more Polyrhythms on Your Next Album & not just 1 Song, multiple Songs. All that Speed, Fills etc. are Fire, but Polyrhythm just escalates a Drummers Level to a whole another magnitude. 🙏🏻
His approach to click tracks is the same as Mike Portnoy. Interesting…. Very talented and humble drummer. Had the chance to see them front row last year and at the end of the show, Mario came and gave us a hug. What a moment . His morbid angel shirt pays tribute to another great metal drummer Señor Pete Sandoval.
I've always appreciated that, even with the extreme nature of Gojira's music, Mario's kit always has a very natural, organic sound to it. Most drummers of his ilk go with that overprocessed sound and, as a result, none of them stand out like he does. His creative approach to playing helps, too.
His whole schtick is to interrupt and stand WAY too close to the interview subject. I find it annoying, I can't even imagine what the various drummers are thinking. Like, dude- take a step back and allow for some personal space.
he is using DW 5000 pedals on the kick during the performance video. you can see clearly the left footboard when he stands up at the 53 second mark. those are not dyna syncs.
He's been using dw5000 for atleast 20 years.. when I saw them back in 2003, he was playing dw5000 with tama. Maybe because he's sponsored by tama now he has to show the dynas or cant show non tama products during rundowns? Gojira isn't on the level yet of someone like Lars Ulrich and Metallica who have deals with Tama and ESP but can play whatever they want because they are legends lol.. some day Mario will be on that level. I know the drummer of black daliah murder Shannon Lucas who was sponsored by tama but still used pearl drum racks said tama is okay with their drummers using other products as long as the competitors products logos not showing during situations like this.
Well tama dyna sync is like 10 grades above DW5000 so it's strange why he would prefer a lower quality pedal. Maybe because he is used to chain drive and not direct drive
I saw these guys play back in October 2024 with Korn. All I got say is Gojira knows how to put on killer show. Mario Duplantier you’re a beast and inspire me to improve my double pedal skills. 🤘🏼🥁🔥

Eloy is far superior.
