    I constantly wonder what runs thru August's head as far as spirituality goes in real life, not while acting. Tho he's practical, he's deep & layered. This is 1 of many reasons I wish to meet him, esp to discuss spirituality w this beautiful, intelligent man. 💙

    Truly can not wait to see this. As a longtime admirer of the cinema of Malick, I can't explain how glad I am he is working in a linear fashion again. I think this films themes are perfect for this time of growing fascism in the West. Let's hope that art can remind the world of history's lesson.

    Both are ideal choices for their roles in the movie. They seem to belong to the natural world in the Alps. That open valley and the mountain range overwhelm the sensations of any city dweller with a constant noisy background and lack of natural lines. The couple lives happily and without many needs: " we had our nest up there in the mountains".
    The evil that reached them...well, we have seen it in lots of mainstream movies; but not creeping up to an idyllic mountain village, which, for us, city creatures, is Paradise itself with an Adam and Eve sharing an apple that a neighbor offer them in the first scenes. Is that a normal event or has a hidden biblical meaning?
    The answer: it doesn't matter, because the movie is about millions of " normal people that build the good in the world and pass unnoticed... and rest in hidden graves that nobody visits"
    That's how the final quote of the movie from George´s Eliot "Middlemarch" erases the frontier between the popular movie hero and the normal person.
    It´s very important to stress this: the movie is about the importance of actions of normal people ("lidden lives of people who lie in graves no longer visited"); and not about the sacrifice for a cause of a heroic figure.
    In the movie the bishop´s sermon on the metaphor of "the hammer and the anvil" is a literal quote taken from one of the "forbidden sermons" of the famous archbishop August von Galen: a pain in the neck for the regime, that could not touch the archbishop-count (Graf von Galen) a member of the oldest German nobility and make a martyr of him. The impact would be disastrous. Though someone in Hitler´s inner circle wanted him hanged, they were no fools: the "Von Galen problem" was put off ; they would settle accounts with him after "the final victory" .
    Von Galen was also beatified, like Franz Jägestätter.
    I think this movie tries to compare both cases and serve as a voice for the less known farmer. Von Galen, "The lion of Münster" was, of course , more famous and a member of the institutional Church; unlike the Austrian farmer.

      It is about saying NO to evil; it is about not cooperating with evil, no matter the pressures, the justifications; it is about standing up to and not caving no matter how much the heart cries for the other choice: to 'keep' life as he, Franz, had it - the love of his wife and children and place in a community he knew so well. So, it was not a 'cause' he died for, it was the truth he loved, and his conscience could not choose to betray the Truth, to go on and live that lie. Evil has no part with the Truth, and we all have to make that choice in our life, and sometime the price will be our life.

      Malick is a very very very private person.
      From wiki :
      While the common conception of Malick as a recluse is inaccurate,[92][93][94] he is nevertheless famously protective of his private life.[95] His contracts stipulate that his likeness may not be used for promotional purposes, and he routinely declines requests for interviews.[32][96]

    one of the best movies i ve seen so far. incredibly moving, great performances and a message that everyone should think abt.
    what was irritating watching the interview was how valerie emphasized how simple the farmers were. Maybe she didnt mean it that way but although the farmers worked all day long and spent time outside i m sure they had their thoughts and knowledge - they had to be intelligent to live a life this life with forces of nature, growing their corn, raising children etc. ..+ thats one of the topics of the film, the intelligence of the ppl of that time period, imo.
    also both actors mentioned how the characters were connected to each other by their love the connection to the farmland but why not mention the unity of ppl + nature? of course they were connected but its about unity! + its such an important message of the movie, the unity that gets distroyed by a terrible idiology + ppl being complicit.
    will need to read german interviews of the actors to find out if their thoughts abt the film are more complex than when interviewed in english.

    • @Ryan_hey
      @Ryan_hey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually do remember they did talk of their connection to nature at one point in it this. Also, I don't think they meant simple as "dumb" but in that they led simple lives, and that's what makes their actions so palpable as a normal person. In other words, they weren't superheroes performing grand deeds.

    The film is a work of art that grows from another written work of arts and the history of the unknown peasant who would remain a "Hidden life" if the local popular culture and, later, the Church and artists would´t have spread that events. We don´t need to still go back to old and classical figures, masters or gurus. The point is that story is always on the making and thee are anonymous "heroes" around, but we won´t see them: why? We are told constantly that legends and admirable persons belong to past times; the present is "no longer what it used to be" . That's the same refrain repeated by every generation...even ourselves and our grandchildren will repeat it. "All in the past times was better" is, indeed a literary theme. "That woulnd´t happen in the (my) good old days" ...You were a rascal like your children are! Don´t yo remember when you ....? And the troubles back then: the same if not worse than today! Just open a book or old journal and see the facts documented, not though your memory!
    The movie adds sound and image. It´s like Michelangelo´s reading biblical stories and Greek myths and paint the Sistine Chapel, carve the "David", the "Pietá", the "Moses"...All that old revered but unknown dull stories became real in the XVI century. Otherwise they may have faded away.
    The sound of the film is amazing, even more than the images. Without its quality the film would be lame. But also the story is overflowing with references to the Bible, the history of those days, the present history, ethics and hero models, ideals of living, ideals of how a couple can be happy in a rural spot, paradise, the "less is more" of Buddhism or Christ´s figure...
    It´s important to watch it as not a religious or Christlike figure, although the storyline sometimes seems to reflect directly Christ's passion...The court trial and the following conversation with the judge Lueben (Bruno Ganz) is like Pilate´s talking to Christ, but Franz Jägestätter does not answer haughtily and convinced, nor does he resort to a religious reason. "Are you judging me?"- "I don´t judge you..It's just that feeling ...."

    Valerie... why are you so afraid to say God? Pretty disappointing, especially because the character you played is Catholic, and definitely believes in her saviour, who is NOT "nature"... indeed he is above nature, because He created it. He is supernatural, and these people believed that, and many people today keep the faith, even if it's alien to you. It's pretty disappointing that you won't even acknowledge the truth of the real-life character you play. Don't be so cowardly, full of human respect and political correctness. You betray the spirit of the very person whose existence brought you to this production. You and August both... just because you yourself have no faith shouldn't prevent you from honoring the truth.

      @Ryan_hey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is not political correctness just because they do not choose to use YOUR word. Whether Franz acted morally due to his Christian beliefs or moral compass, Valerie meant that anyone can do something as Franz did, regardless of what thought process arrived at it. You don't need to qualify yourself under a specific religion in order to be applicable for moral actions. Period.

    • @alphaclam
      @alphaclam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Ryan_hey "anyone can do something as Franz did, regardless of what thought process arrived at it"
      Oh really? What exactly would an alternative thought process look like? If you watched the film carefully you will have recognized that the motivation of Franz is constantly attacked on a logical basis. It is outright explained to both him and the audience that there is legitimately no practical reason whatsoever for him to choose death, and he is repeatedly offered ways out of his situation even after being sentenced. Why wouldn't a person that doesn't believe in God agree to just go work in a hospital, for example, in exchange for their life and the happiness of their family? I would love to hear a single explanation as to why such a person without faith would choose this path in face of all the other options. As the actors said his journey isn't about 'fighting back' or 'resisting', which anyone can do. it's about simply saying "no", I will not betray who I am.
      In other words, you seem to be forgetting that the choice he made was far greater than simply "I will not kill" or "I will not support the Nazis". Don't you remember the priest telling him something to the effect of: 'it doesn't matter what you say out loud, only what you believe in your heart.' A person who does not believe in God doesn't even have to face this internal dilemma in the first place, which is the entire crux of the story. In the material world his decision was pointless; in the realm of spirituality it meant everything.
      The reality is the choice he made was to be a martyr. In fact he was later recognized by the church and beatified -- an extremely high honor. The concept that somebody without faith would choose to be a martyr based on a "thought process" is not only bizarre it's inherently contradictory!

    • @louisalevine3711
      @louisalevine3711 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@alphaclam Yes, so true. It is impossible to say 'no' to the Nazis and die for it, without the overwhelming conviction, in Franz's heart, that he is being true to his conscience, a conscience formed, and inseparable from his Catholic conviction, ie,his Catholic Faith! It is quite deplorable how both August and Valery take such pains avoiding the Catholicity of Franz, as if that was just a minor detail about him, and not the glaring truth about him, what gave him the strength (of character) to die for Christ. Franz J., pray for us to Our Lord, that He may mercifully help us when our time comes to say 'NO'!
