  • As the AIDS crisis worsens, gay men in New York City improvise a response, forming alliances and drawing battle lines.
From the co-creators of Slow Burn, Fiasco is a narrative podcast that transports listeners into the day-to-day reality of America’s most pivotal historical events. Using original interviews with dozens of key players, host Leon Neyfakh brings to life the forgotten twists and turns of the past while shedding light on the present day. The new season of Fiasco goes deep on the AIDS epidemic in America, with a special focus on the early years of the crisis, when a diagnosis was tantamount to a death sentence. The eight-part series looks at the mystery and missteps around identifying and treating a new, contagious disease, and what it took to get the public -and the government- to care.

There's so much detail, so many stories, about the epidemic in this podcast, compared to anywhere else. Excellent.

I thought I had seen/heard/read everything there is to know about HIV/AIDS, until this amazing podcast showed up in my feed. The research & interviews is incredible! And the candidness vs strictly clinical talk of the virus truly makes it captivating.

Michael Callen was a truly beautiful man. How to have Sex in an Epidemic was important work. He did get caught up in ‘HIV does not cause AIDS’ pseudoscience. But I think that was him trying to cope perhaps. He wanted to believe in the bombardment theory, and that safe sex and a healthy lifestyle would help him be cured of AIDS. Sadly he died in 1993. RIP Michael.

When Larry Kramer says 'no cause' 36 mins - he was either lying or ignorant or in denial. Cause had been established by Sonneband and also the CDC who for whatever reason covered it up.

CDC and Cancer institute knew damn well what it was as they were paid by biowarfare Dept to create the damned thing.

I think he meant where it came from. I think it was from that Hep B trials. How it got to the Africans could be the vaccines, and then it made it way to the Haitians. Moat definitely man made.

Joe Sonneband was not wrong, he was 100% correct.

He absolutely was wrong and even eventually acknowledged that he was wrong. AIDS was not caused by a hedonistic lifestyle but by a transmissible virus. That's why hemophiliacs caught it.

    • @ArohaStill

He never dismissed that there could be a single virus as the cause and he basically advocated for using condoms...definitely not wrong and cofactors are still important for determining health outcomes and longevity for HIV patients. He accepted HIV to be the cause when the science was proven. He was a scientist and proceeded with caution even in AZT treatments.
