- By the start of 1983, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 1,221 people had been diagnosed with AIDS in the United States; 748 had died. Many thousands more had symptoms that would prove to be the early stages of the disease. At the start of 1983, Eric Marcus was lonely. He was single and didn’t want to be. Eric didn’t feel a connection to any of New York City’s gay communities. And he hadn’t yet found a professional community. Eric didn’t belong. But he longed to. This is chapter two: “Not Alone.”
