Orchid Grow Space Tour!

  • This week Plant Lovers, a somewhat EPIC tour of all the various orchid growing spaces I have both indoors and out. I was always so keen to see exactly WHERE other growers kept their plants to see if I could replicate the conditions and grow similar things, and so after a few requests, here's mine! We're in a rental while we're renovating so I've had to make do and find spots for specific things all over the place!
    I'll time stamp this video below with links to my other videos that have relevance to what we're looking at at each location.
    And I do mention our new house and my channel that was about that, you can see that here if you're curious about where my orchids and I will be going!: / @hellohouselovers1747
    And for an aesthetic introduction this is a link to my old apartment as featured on The Design Files: thedesignfiles...

    I loved seeing how you grow your orchids. I have the same philosophy, I keep mine in my living space, no extra equipment, and they're there for me to enjoy looking at. I live in a very different climate with a lot less space, but it is still very informative and delightful to watch your videos!

    this reinforces the idea that there's an orchid for every location, you might struggle finding just the right orchid, but there is one. I too live in a "zone 9" (san jose, CA), so I'm going to try starting with Australian Dendrobiums, they seem to be pretty hardy.

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's said....Melbourne is closest to a Zone 9...but we don't have a zonal system system in Australia and everything is subjective! That said I'd say you will do fine with them outdoors! Good luck!

    • @MostlyIC
      @MostlyIC 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@helloplantlovers the main difference seems to be that here in San Jose, CA we do get frost, so I'll have to plan to bring the outdoors ones indoors on occasion. would be a problem with a collection as large as yours, but my space is very limited so I think I'm good !

    Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room with us plant lovers. Aesthetically Pleasing Displays. I’m aiming myself that direction and have them at least on 2 decent pieces of furniture but I refuse to (and I know it will ruffle feathers) set ugly shelves in front of windows then hang lights over them. We grow similarly I am in the opposite hemisphere though and grow nothing outside. Keep up your interesting, informative work and for being charming and entertaining as you do it!❤

    Hi Matthew, would love to see a series of videos of how you transition to the new house! Wondering how that’s going. Would love to see how you manage to move all this many orchids around… Do you shrink wrap all of them…? Of course the new grow space too!

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I might.....it will be quite a task and videoing it might be a bridge too far! I move plants in large plastic storage tubs from a hardware store - just without the lid on! Keeps them all upright and contained. I weirdly love packing/unpacking and moving ( a result of a childhood with a father in the services and so constantly moving). It should be some time towards the end of next year. Watch this space!

    Hi Matthew! I have just paused the video! I'm like you, I like to place plants according to the aesthetics of the room. So, if the area is not well-lit, I try to choose a plant that can cope with that but (hopefully!) still creates the look I was after. I too do not use grow light or humidifiers (although there are some gorgeous overhead grow lights out there). I love my plants but it's important, for me, that they work well with the rest of the space. Now! I'll continue watching your video!!! (I love your background bookshelf area 😍).

    I most admit that I got several dead orchids on my conscious, it's just recently I figured out. Living in Sweden is not the ideal place to grow tropical epiphytes, the humidity, warmth and sun is a challenge. I got my little collection of mostly seedlings in a small indoor greenhouse, with a lightbulb giving the amount of light they need ( I can't offer special treatment ) So far they are doing good. The best I did to them, was giving them a clay pot, the risk of having rotten roots is not going to happen anymore

    Beautiful indoors and the outdoor space is incredible! I'm not sure that you can get away with claiming amateur status with a successful collection like yours :) I also put many orchids outside out for summer here in Canada. However I put them where they can get rain so I don't have to worry about watering them as much, I'm more concerned about wind so I have them where they get a little protection from the Southwest where most of our storms come from. You mention protecting your orchids from the rain. Can you please explain the reason why you don't want the rain on them? I also have to worry about creatures disturbing the orchids, but here it is squirrels. I put lots of cacti out around the orchids and the thorns help keep the squirrels off the plant table.

      Squirrels + cacti! there's a solution! The rain protection issue for me is that here, in summer, the temperatures can be quite variable so we can get more warm, almost tropical like rain - which is fine as the ambient heat causes evaporation and great humidity, but we can also get drenching, cold rain which sets in for days and can be problematic. So that's my reasoning!

      @@helloplantlovers Thank you. That explains it! We get very hot humid summers here in Southern Ontario.

    I grow mine indoors, so I try to always think of appearance also.

    Another question on watering. How do you go about properly watering all of your plants that you have in the house while not getting everything else wet, such as tables and the floor?

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Firstly - I have a very laissez-faire attitude about watering outside! I use a hose in warm weather and a can in winter so I can be more targeted - or with-holding! Inside, I just use a small watering can with a fine spout and carry a tea towel with me just in case of drips. But having surfaces that can't be damaged by water really helps! And if the plant's saucer is sitting on timber I put felt pads underneath the saucer to lift it a little and stop any damp transferring to the timber below. Probably takes half an hour every 4-5 days in summer to water everything. And I mist things as I pass them at least once a day. There you go - not that much of a hassle.

    Some indoor gardeners think that misting plants does no good, but you obviously do

      Well...it would depend entirely on your location, micro climate and what you're growing. Each to their own.

    Mathew, Pulcherrima, we in Aus. say “pull-ker-imma” Loved your tour! What are you going to do with all those Doritis when they grow up a bit? There don’t seem to be many individual plants available at nurseries around here.

      Oh thank you - pronunciation is NOT a strength! Well - I only wanted one! And no, I'd never seen them for sale. So we'll see. Either swap or sell or giveaway. So far 100% success rate!

    Thank you Matthew I think the reason my orchids don't bloom as well as yours is my orchids are too shaded I will have to move some. 🖐

      Thanks for watching - yes light is always the key and the most common reason for a plant not flowering - good luck!!

    Do you take your inside plants outside at all? Like for watering or just a bit of fresh air ⛅️

      I try to in summer and give them a good hose down on a warm morning.

    As you don’t use fans If you get long periods of still weather (hot or cold seasons ) with very little breeze does it affect your plants re lack of ventilation ?

      If it does...it does! Not a lot I can do about it. But there is always some air movement.

    Can you tell me anything about the painting looks like Madonna and child at 18 mins .

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a Madonna and child, possibly cut down from a larger painting and is 17th century Spanish.
