    I'm from Munich in Germany and thought that we need to help the refugees but that the problem is far away from us.
    This summer I realized how small the world really is as each day thousands of Syrians, who left their countries just a few weeks ago, "suddenly" arrived at our Central Station where I used to pass by nearly everyday the last years.
    It show's that there's nothing like their problems anymore in the world and we have to help these people as ONE world.

    Dear John Green,
    I know you will probably not get this, but I, for absolutely no reason, wanted to say that I just got the book Paper Town's at my local book store, and I turned to the second page, and it just so happens that you signed my book, that is not the only reason why I am writing this, I would like to take the time to tell you that you are the best author ever, the first book I read of yours was the fault in our stars, which is most likely the best book I have ever read, that book is so heart warming, and it makes you fell like a new person, I my self would like to give you a round of applauds, not only for your brilliant books, but because of who you are, you have inspired me and many others, you have this amazing gift, and you take the time to write books for other people's enjoyment. I hope you get this,
    Sincerely,
    your #1 fan.

    John, for a school project we had to pick a global political issue and write and present a report on it. I chose the refugee crisis. I am very passionate about helping and welcoming refugees into our country as they are just helpless people fleeing for their lives. I find it quite horrifying that I was the only one in my class who had this perspective, most of my class mates wanted them to "piss off back to their own country" and asked "what're they gonna do for us if we let them in?" For most of the past few weeks I've been almost in tears trying to explain to them the idea of compassion and what these people are going through, but they just brush it off like it doesn't matter. Because this issue doesn't exactly affect them directly (as in they're not refugees) they think its just another crisis and people will get over it. They don't seem to get that these are real people that are suffering, its like they just see the people as data, just numbers that don't mean anything. Its times like these when I feel scared for humanity, when a group of 14 year old kids don't get that this stuff does affect them, that these people do need help, they are welcome into our country. They all laugh at me when I'm in tears, completely infuriated trying to explain to them that, no, not all of them are terrorists, and no, they won't give us all diseases, and yes, they are humans just like us. Trying to survive, escaping their life- threateningly unsafe countries for refuge, its not as if they had a choice, they're are JUST PEOPLE.

    Excited to do some watching and voting for P4A. I'm always extra interested in the videos john makes with information on Ethiopia specifically. That's where my boyfriend is from and one day I'm going to travel over with him to visit his family. What he describes is nothing like the poverty shown in your videos so I'm sure his life was very different but it's still an entire new world for me. His name is also Yohannes, like the great children's care man you showed. Since that specifically effects me I can absolutely say "those boys are my boys too, just like my boyfriend." But I shouldn't care just because I have a personal connection. I should care because they're people.

    Fantastic work - Of course I already gave at the office... no, really. I actually did. I took a break, got on my phone and donated to the UNHCR (so I'm kinda tapped) but thanks for doing what you're doing. And keep on making amazing videos cuz I'm selfish and find them really helpful for my classes, so like, less work for me. Yay. But really, you guys are awesome!
    Side note, the stories of Canada accepting Syrian refugees (only 25000 but it is a start) and how the Prime Minister himself met some of them personally as they came off the plane is worth the glance if you haven't had the chance.
    And now, back to being virally-nerdy, and virally-awesome. Is virally a word?

    • @ThatMrTC
      @ThatMrTC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      trillion? sorry buddy, check that math. (over 6-10 years it will be approximately 1.2 Billion - that's B - and that's likely offset by the fact that new citizens pay taxes... and in canada, a fair amount, so that 1.2 billion ends up being significantly lower, especially considering that over time those citizens create more citizens which together have a collective input into the society (to say nothing that their value goes far beyond simplistic monetary value!) but even from that limited scope of dollars and cents these choices will more than certainly offset the initial costs. 25000 people paying 30% tax throughout their lives, and then their offspring paying 30% tax, and so on. And should you attempt to say they'll be a drain on welfare, social services, etc. sure, some may be, but most won't.

    • @ThatMrTC
      @ThatMrTC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, I see, I misunderstood. I believed (not surprisingly) that you meant the decision to bring in refugees would cost us 1.2 trillion. Understandable given the touted price-tag of 1.2 billion. However you meant our total national debt to pay for everything from education, national defense, healthcare, etc. is around 1.2 trillion. I see. fair enough. lots of debt isn't good. I still believe that bringing in refugees and immigrants is generally a positive that can't be weighed merely in terms of dollars.

    I found the movie The Good Lie to be very helpful in better understanding the Syrian refugee crisis. Even though it is a drama it gave some good info and personified the refugees that I think so many people forget are humans.

    P4A took place over my birthday and I missed it?! I've never been so disappointed with myself. Hopefully, I'll be caught up by this year's Project for Awesome, so I can go around liking, commenting, and watching a ton of P4A videos :)
    Saying DFTBA on a P4A video is just unnecessary for obvious reasons, so everyone continue with your awesomeness and generosity!! :)

    John, thank you. With all of the hate in the news it is easy to think in terms of "us" and "them". However, while there is some sense in thinking that way (we shouldn't act like people who hate us are our friends for instance; not making a political statement about any particular group there just an observation) it is important to remember that we are all more alike than we are different and great people and thinkers throughout history have come from all over the world. They still could if given the chance. Therefore, it is important to consider any random person, or group of people, as "us" until they prove otherwise. It is easy to hate "them", but easy to love and help "us". Thank you again.

    To all the people claiming educational or P4A exemptions to the 4 minute punishment rule, fair enough but consider a few things: 1. John knows how to make and edit videos under 4 minutes. He's been doing this since 2007 and has to deliberately stuff up in order for his video to be too long.
    2. John knows that punishment videos are some of the best videos of vlogbrothers and nerdfighteria wouldn't be where it is today without them.
    3. John actually enjoyed the last punishment (getting an inkless tattoo) and knows nerdfighteria will set an interesting challenge.
    4. By mentioning punishment in the video, John is basically waiving his right to exemptions.
    So come on guys, let's get creative and suggest ways for John to be punished!

    +vlogbrothers I'm in Ghana and my internet is too slow to see the P4A livestream!
    Can some of the P4A livestream get saved in some 10min parts, so I can let them load and watch them? I can see these videos after about 5mins.
    I want to take part - loads of people are talking about Africa but we can't see it!

    I think it says a lot about John that this video was uplifting and hopeful. I was partly expecting a hardcore rant on Donald Trump, but in hindsight all the stupidity and negativity isn't worth obsessing over. Rather than being angry at the world, we should fight prejudice and fear with hope. Only light can drive out the darkness.

    I can't get into the live stream because I don't have the current version of flash, and the P4A server is down. I can't find any 2015 P4A videos on TH-cam that work on my computer. Other than Indigogo is there anything I can do to help P4A?

    2:08-2:15 so true. I'm glad I'm not one of the people who say that this isn't our problem. I took a class when earning my bachelor degree, it filled a requirement but I was looking forward to the class none the less. International Agriculture in Developing Countries. It was my favorite class by far and just opened my eyes to the struggles of these developing nations. And it isn't just their struggle, it is a struggle of the world and the living population. We were assigned a project with the Millennial Development Goals, and it was amazing to see John's video earlier this year about how much progress has been made and ugh. It's just so reassuring. I'm not sure what my point is anymore, I've rambled a bit. I just love to see people continuing to fight against world suck.
    Totally unrelated but I cannot get over the shade of brown of their skin, it's so pretty.
