When you pulled out the colored fabric, for a moment my brain was like: wait, you can do that?! 🤣 These videos are sooo addictive, so pleas keep them coming.
And the pattern on the dress fits so amazingly with the curves of the body! I'm dramatically fainting over here.

Thank you Olga! The best thing about using a colored fabric is no white spots 😂

The mystical splitty part-y dye is what dreams are made of!!! I feel like it'd make gorgeous curtains or pillow covers, especially in a hidden nook somewhere! Imagine reading a fabulous book, with a hot chocolate and a furry friend, hidden behind curtains dyed with such a magical dye. You could even have the lining dyed with the special dye, and a normal fabric on the outside, so only the nook inhabitants know of it's glory!

Have you considered playing around with over dying on the t-shirts that didn't come as amazing as you wanted? I'm just curious what would happen... But not sure if that is a good idea or not. It could be a new dangerous rabbit hole.

You can definitely overdye! I re-dyed a piece of cotton sateen fabric, becuase while I looooved the pattern (scrunches with dye over ice) the color turned sorta peach when it split apart, which was too close to my skin tone and I wanted something with more oomph. I overdyed it using the exact same technique with some orange colors and now its a fiery dream 🔥

All of these came out looking really pretty!
I have a lot of solid color shirts that are several years old and could use a refresh, and also a bunch of soda ash. (But no dyes yet - I went only partway down the tie-dye rabbit hole during COVID, not far enough to buy all the supplies, because chaos-brain.)
I think I have no choice but to try this.

    • @TheClosetHistorian

Hi! I'm a silk painter and I use acid dyes on all of my art on silk, but they are silk dyes.
Anyway, Habotai, the correct pronunciation is "hah•buh•tie" or "haba•tie".
If you want to try silk again get a thicker momme. You probably bought 14"x14" 8mm and 44"x44" 8mm. The 8 momme(8mm) is almost the thinnest in Habotai. Next time try a 12mm and the cost is not so different.
At 30:31 the patterns on the cotton scarf look like a photo of four diamond and precious stone rings that have been put through a few filters. The 'white' parts look like the light that's bouncing around the cuts of each stone. It's like you've got a large gem in the middle and then smaller round-cut and baguette-cut gems around the large solitaire. Looks cool!

rinse your protein-dye projects in vinegar. i suggest the channel chemknits tutorials for dying wool and silk, they use the same chemistry. oh wool is easier and when fullu=y dyed there is no run off.

Bianca, I dye lots of yarn -- using natural dyes, and like you have to "feel" the yarn so I don't use gloves. I find that toothpaste and rubbing alcohol works to get the color out. You have to use the "old school" tooth paste, however, as the gel type paste, I find, do not work so well. The scarf is exquisite, just beautiful.

I really loved the green one you did early on in the video, and I'm really enjoying the surprises from the splitting dyes. • @diefledermauschen
    @diefledermauschen ปีที่แล้ว +1

Acid is a better mordant for protein fibers; it holds the dye fast and doesn't degrade them like soda ash can. You can use citric acid or just white vinegar. You can use dharma's fiber reactive dyes with acid as well, so you don't have to buy more dye if you want to try it. Interestingly, nylon dyes with acid dyes just as well as wool does, so if you wanted to you could do tights or underthings like slips too.

    Eheeheeehee, forbidden casserole....
Things on the list to try next winter... cause let's face it, realistically there's no way I'm gonna get my butt organized enough to try this myself before the snow's gone this year. Even with another 8" coming tonight. Though I can't help thinking how gorgeous a white flannel nighgown/housedress could be doing this... and I may set aside some of my "destined for tie-dye" shirts. Those look so similar to the agate slabs I've collected over the years at craft sales... love it.

There is some kind of cream that is supposed to be like temporary gloves and protect things from being absorbed into your skin - we had to use it instead of real gloves in biology lab. I'm not sure if something like that would protect your hands from being stained but it may be something to look into if gloves don't work for you. Glad you're having so much fun with this process

I find cuticles stay stained the longest. When I had a job tinting paint, most of us chose to simply wear dark nail polish. The perma-stained cuticles weren't too noticeable that way.
Yeah... you wear gloves to work directly with the tints where you can - but accidents happen when they happen, and sometimes you really need to feel what you're doing.
