Because you are responsible for your company's transportation and logistics, you need
to be aware of the international regulations concerning shipping materials if you
    export your goods.
Over the past couple of years, pest outbreaks have been traced back to transport
packaging, which has led governments around the world to crack down on non-
manufactured wood packaging materials such as wooden pallets and crates.
Numerous countries have established restrictions to stop the introduction of foreign pests, creating a complicated maze of regulations.
Wooden pallets are economical, effective and easy to use in your company's transportation process. The challenge is you don't want to be forced to use a more
costly and cumbersome shipping material in order to comply with the international
regulations. You are under pressure to keep your shipping costs as low as possible.
The good news is you can still use wooden pallets for international shipping.
In this video you will learn what types of wooden pallets are acceptable for
international transportation and what treatment processes they must undergo and how
you can easily recognize a treated pallet for international trade.
What are the two Treatment processes for wooden pallets and crates?
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a treaty among more than 115 countries allowing for two treatment methods - heat treatment and fumigation with methyl bromide. While fumigation is effective, the use of harsh chemicals such as
methyl bromide is declining in popularity due to environmental issues.
The heat treatment process is more environmentally sound and we will look at this a bit closer. Here we are in L'Assumption Quebec at the site of Mailhot Palettes Inc. where they use the heat treatment process. For over 35 years, Mailhot Palettes have been supplying Montreal manufacturers with skids destined for international trade.
This is the dry kiln where the pallets are loaded for treatment using natural gas as a heating fuel. Co owner Mr. Alain Mailhot will explain the treatment process in more detail. Once the pallets have been properly treated, they are then loaded onto transport
trucks for delivery to the customer.
How can you easily recognize a solid wood pallet suitable for export shipping?
Every pallet has the appropriate stampings and manufacturing number so the pallet can
be traced back to the pallet manufacture and production run for quality control purposes.
Are all wood materials subject to this regulation? Only solid wood structures both coniferous and non-coniferous materials are subject to the regulation Engineered wood products such as corrugated, plywood and OSB, are exempt. Foreign bacteria and insects sometimes found in shipping materials poses a threat to a country's natural resources. The IPPC treaty is designed to protect against such a threat. Solid wooden pallets can still be the international shipping material of choice if the pallets are treated properly.
Make sure that all of your wooden shipping materials have the correct markings indicating the proper treatment has been performed.
This video has been created and produced by the Continuing Education Department of Champlain College - Saint Lambert. We would like to thank Mailhot Palettes of L'Assomption, Quebec for offering their time, production facility and guidance in the heat treatment process .

I made it by myself. I used WoodPrix scripts for that.

The best rule of thumb, I think, is to not burn used pallets as a general rule. :-)
