Looks Groovy. I'm probably going to pick up Jackals for my table. My wife absolutely adores that "Swords n' Sandals" sort of setting. This looks perfect.
You may also want to check out Barbarians Of Lemuria if you guys like the sword & sorcery/sandals themes that is lighter on rules. Obviously some Conan style inspiration. It has a cool magic system open to creativity based on easy to understand and implement concepts. No huge spell lists to deal with, just on-the-spot effect creation. PC skills are simply encompassed in a character's past professions, so no big skill lists. Just make a call on whether their few professions would provide a bonus to whatever they're trying to do. I wasn't too enamored with a lot of the art in it, and the included bestiary was hit & miss, but it looks easy to create your own in such a relatively simple system with small stat blocks. I think it's 'universal' system, Everywhen, has great potential for whipping up whatever setting you want, too. Easy alternative to so many other universal RPGs which take too much GM work to fill out and hack.
Oh.. there is also a whole system called "Mazes & Minoutaurs" for free on DTRPG. Lots of freebie splat and such for ancient Greek and near east mythological setting. Can't beat the price! Not another run of the mill d20 system, either.
I've always liked opposed actions for combat, such as in AFF, or even just player-only rolls such as Talisman Adventures and Cypher. Cuts down on some of the round-robin time sink.
Looks like a great little RPG. I do love Runequest, but this certainly scratches an itch for a system which is more easier to get into so might be something which could get my players into Bronze Age roleplaying easily. Thanks for the review Jeff and look forward to more.
Nice review. I can't decide if I prefer an "attack/response" system like typical D100 games, or the Clash system, which seems like the end result will be pretty much the same, but with more abstracted, quicker combat.
This gives me a Jason and the Argonauts vibe, historical fantasy and mythology. Also, I was thinking, that you could possibly reference their historical books about ancient cultures and war that could be incorporated into the game and add a bit of the "flavor / magic" if maybe revisiting historical moments.
really well done. As a constructive criticism: the explanation of the combat system did not came through that well. I still dont know how it works despite the opposed roll and counter actions. The resolution table looked like the one I saw in RQ6/Mythras which is one of the most complicated, most clunky system we ever tried (unsuccessful). So its quite deterrent to see that again (and we played Harnmaster and BRP without any problems).
The original Day of the Jackal with Edward Fox, was a very good movie, though I gather this is a tad different than trying to assassinate Charles de Gaulle…
That's one thing a lot of people feel is very intimidating about trying out Runequest; the mountain of setting background out there. Funny enough, I could see gamers easily incorporating this into Runequest though. ~ Jeff
@@Thegaminggang, I took the financial plunge on the current edition of Runequest last year, but haven't invested the time. I was kinda wondering about how useful it might be to raid & mix. Especially as they've put out a campaign for Jackals. Might that campaign serve as the bones of a more fleshed out with lore and such Glorantha game?
I was a bit astonished that you gave this one 8,5 since as I remember, you gave Paleomythic 8,6, that is, just 0,1 point more, although clearly you had many more negative things to say about Jackals than about Paleomythic. Thanks anyway for another insightful talk.
@@Thegaminggang OK, then I get it. I just received my copy of Paleomythic today and it's really a beautiful book. I look forward to cuddling down and reading it tonight.
Dang dude, is the world run by women? Just about all the art is of women. What happened to Good strong men in the combat poses. All they ever do any more is replace men in the art, not balance it.
This has become one of my favourite channels to watch. Thanks for the review!
Our pleasure! Keep up the great work!

Jackals is really cool.

Good game. The Clash System is very cool, makes the opposed roll and situational aspect of combat a lot of fun and player driven.

It is a very alternate Bronze age but a great new setting also RQ is not really Just Bronze age Airships Guns Pool Tables and so on

I'm sold!! Sounds great and can also be house ruled easy if someone really wants to play a monk lol. I'm getting and checking it out!
Boy are you about to get way more views on this video.
Do you think this would be suitable for solo play?

This looks pretty cool. No shade toward RuneQuest, but it might be a bit easier to tackle a game with a less massive load of lore.

It's actually split evenly through the whole book. It just seems uneven, as it's not something we're used to with rpg books. Long may it continue.
