I homeschool my children most of their educational years , also my 8 grandchildren had been homeschooled. They all have been very successful and well balanced in social life. I wished I had been home schooled. So I love your plan to homeschool. Can’t go wrong. Best decision I ever made. . Tara I too have fought anxiety but plenty of b complex ,and c excerise and be creative and prayer makes I big difference. I am 75 and loving life and your channel. Smiles every time I see your children.
I think exposing them to different cultures and experiences is a good thing. Although the school space may be smaller than what they are used to, it gives them the opportunity to grow appreciating what they have. Not to mention they’ll learn to speak the native language of where they’re growing up ❤
Dear Newbys , I am French , married in Greece for 50 years , and I learnt Greek when my child went to school ,I was doing his homework together with him ..Hope it will help you too ,I am so happy to follow you every week ...Your small kitchen is so beautiful.
@@annievlachos7880 I lived in Greece on skiathos the schooling system has no funding the education was terrible hours and hours if homework they didn't learn anything st school as they had no equipment so I had to come back to the UK my son hated it I don't know what ots like in Portugal but everyone parent is entitled to choose what they want for there kids
Hi Family, I wanted to bring your attention to Portuguese laws regarding education. While homeschooling is an option, it comes with a lot of requirements that make traditional schooling a more practical choice. Additionally, socializing with peers is crucial for a child's development. For those of you struggling to find time to learn Portuguese, I recommend immersing yourselves in the language. Watch Portuguese TV shows, movies with Portuguese subtitles, and practice speaking every day, even if it's a mix of languages. If you plan on staying in Portugal long-term, becoming fluent in Portuguese is essential. Best of luck in your new home!
The ‘practical’ choice is not always the best choice for every child though. Traditional education is not right for a growing proportion of children, which beggars the question Why? I think Tara & John are wise to put time & thought into what is best for their boys, even if it means taking a route that is more difficult in a traditional country. I speak as a former Early Years teacher and the grandmother of several neuro-divergent children for whom the school system simply does not work, and induces severe anxiety. John clearly struggled with the constraints of traditional education, so I am sure he & Tara will do what is in the best interests of their children from a place of love ❤
The factor of socialization within the own age group and adjacent ages is pretty much as important as the schooling itself and substantially underrated. It can also not be replaced or hardly be compensated later in the development process. Thank you for highlighting this!
It seems like the main requirements are to enroll in an umbrella homeschool and that the parent educator has to have a university degree, and then you have to show evidence of academic progress. This isn't that big a deal, really, and there are usually homeschool communities that arrange plenty of regular meet-ups with other families for socialization and so forth.
The best way to learn Portuguese is to put your kids in public school..I had my kids in Mexico so when I put them into pure Spanish speaking kindergarten as they learned the language from the alphabet up, so did I ,from helping them with their homework and being involved with the local mom's helping at the school. I wouldn't worry about the playground so much since they have the balance and room to roam at home.. Plus making friends for life is really important...
I was born in Argentina, lived in different countries and settled in USA and married an American . It was very import to me that my boys learn Spanish, as newborns and toddlers only spoke to them in Spanish. When they were in 2nd grade and kindergarten I took them to Argentina for 11 months and they attended a small rural school, cinder block with stone floor. They went for 1/2 day, spent the rest of the time on a farm. We returned every other year. My boys are now 21 and 19. Best decision I ever made. Although it was not the outdoor school you value, the relationships they made and invented games in the stone courtyard with their friends are remembered fondly and continue to this day.
{Since you asked} I think you should give school a try. For one thing, it'll give your kids regular exposure to the language, and kids to socialize with kids besides just one sibling. I hated school myself, but didn't want to foist my attitudes on my kids. If it turned out my kids hated school, I wanted that to be on them, not due to me. In any event, it it turns out rubbish, you can pull them out, right? So I say, give it a go!
Dont worry about the concrete playground! Theyve got all the space in the world at home. Life is about balance & im sure being part of a different part of society will make more rounded boys.
I'm absolutely FOR local schools for the first few years, they'll learn the language FAST and become part of the community.... tutors can't do that, other kids do. That doesn't mean it has to be forever, but I can intuit that it's actually you adults who want more flexibility to go when and where you want and not be tied down to a school year. 🤣
The best thing that ever happened to me was to be immersed in a USA Army school in Germany when I was eight. My mother language was Spanish and I knew only a few phrases in English. Let them have their own experiences. They will be bilingual in two months and they’ll be with other children and gain a lot from the experience. Let them have the adventures Crusoe and Sawyer had. What an advantage.
@@TheNewbys My parents were so anxious since I loved books. They packed a popular encyclopedia called, El Tesoro de la juventud, so that I’d have something to read and I thank them for that. Two or three months after I begun school they were talking to each other in English so that I would not understand and I told them, I understood everything you said. Had to tell them what they’d said. 😂
I think homeschooling and a Portuguese tutor is a great combo. It’s great to hear that the boys have started speaking Portuguese which will be hugely beneficial. Tara, hopefully you and John will start to pick up more as you go along. I’ll be here for everything
Thank you for being so open in your answers I, too, think your channel is the best...I am sure it wi continue to grow, and flourish. I am so excited that you are building your beautiful dream house..and that we will he part of your journey. Sending hugs to you all and pats to Obie
Children are great teachers. I learned much of my Spanish by interacting with my students. I taught them English inside the classroom but once we got out I learned from them. Muchas gracias mis niñas. Saludos!
@@TheNewbys 🥰 I saw a previous vlog where your family immersed yourself in a community - harvesting grapes and making wines. That's good for you and the kids. You will know the language little by little. And in the near future you could come up with activities for the children inviting the children from the community. Example a birthday party where the theme is butterflies. Children will learn everything about butterflies, having a painting contest ... Just remember that in all these you use the Portugese language.🥰 Obrigado
That's what happened to me. I spoke Portuguese and then came to America very young, and we taught our parents, and l still speak Portuguese, and l am teaching my grandson.
Hello loves. I'm in the USA. I home schooled my kids and it was wonderful for all of us. We used unschooling and it wasn't isolating at all. They went to after school theater programs. We had lots of play dates. They got to interact with people of all ages throughout their day. And it makes traveling easier because you don't have to work around the school schedule. We started homeschooling because we met young adults who were homeschooled and were very self-possesed and interesting interesting people. My kids now both have college degrees and are self-supporting adults. And still are really glad they were homeschooled.
People outside of the US & Canada home school too. In today’s world of technology it is possible to find others and build a community. Sure it means you have to actively look and seek. There’s lots out there in the world benefiting both the children and the parents. Having witnessed a few in different countries I’d dare to say it’s more of a community feel than the family gets involved with.
Ola beautiful family. You go learn Portuguese with your children’s, let them go to school they love to be together making friends, go to party birthdays . See you Sunday 😊
I love that you are managing to get so much done in Portugal without speaking in Portuguese! Home school and a Portuguese tutor for the boys sounds like an epic plan! As an adult, I can see that that would have been an awesome upbringing, you may have to navigate a little FOMO from the boys as they grow up, but they will thank you when they can look back with adult heart and appreciate everything you both have provided for them!! I’d love to see the underground room! I love that you both have a fabulous root base in the farm, but that you love to explore too. As a family you are everything that I wish I could have been, had it not been for significant health challenges that keep me from being able to travel as you do. I have only ever had spaniels and I can’t leave the door open without my current two disappearing into the distance!!! I love that Obi stays close and my next dog will be a pack breed!! Your authenticity is everything - it’s why I have never missed an episode. ❤
Hi there John and Tara. As usual I wake up on a Thursday morning and your newest video is waiting for me. I absolutely love your channel and have been a subscriber for years. Really enjoyed listening to all those questions being answered this morning. I was quite surprised though that John hasnt been to New Zealand. So if you ever get down this way we would be honoured to have you and the boys stay and point you in the right direction re an epic holiday here. Your honesty and transparency is rather refreshing and so is your philosophy on life. I think thats one of the reasons I always wait in anticipation for your next episode. Just so you know I am now also subscribed to your travel channel and am finding it incredibly inspiring. As for learning Portuguese, I guess as the boys immerse themselves in the language, it might be easier for you and John to pick it up as well. Dont be hard on yourselves, you can only do what time allows and Im sure when the time is right you will go hard like you do with everything else. And Tara, the garden will always be there next year. I am a horticulturist and believe it or not I too have had years where my vegie garden certainly has cost more to put in than produce. So lovely people, I am looking forward to watching the next chapter in your lives being the building of your beautiful new house. I know I dont comment often, but know that by being on youtube you touch other peoples lives in a really beautiful way. Have a fabulous week Newby Family.
For ages now you've been my favourite TH-cam Channel. Is it really 2 years since you did the tiny house?? it seems like yesterday! Anyway, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying the Newbies have a very special place in my heart and watching you create a beautiful home for you and Crusoe and Sawyer is such a privilege. If I could subscribe a thousand times I would! Subscribe people! It helps!
I lived in Germany as my husband was in the army and I only learned the basics and I got by. The boy's will pick it up as they learn. Just got to love you all ❤
I about spit out my coffee when I heard him say 47. I could not believe it. I look at them as the age of my children and to find out he's ten years younger than I am blows me away. Rock on, John, you make 47 look like 37!
Great Q&A. Thanks for your honesty. The one thing that surprises me the most is you have only been together 5 years. You have done so much in such a short time. I love it.
It's so very important to tune out the voices and opinions of others when choosing schooling options for your children. Only YOUR heart knows what's right for the boys and for your entire family. My boys went to very small private schools, online schools at home, etc. and they grew up to be well-adjusted and PERFECTLY socialized and successful young adults (spoken like a very proud mama). You know what's best for them, and eventually, they, on their own, will walk the path their own souls have laid out for them. ❤
My experience with home schooling is that the children battle to mix with children as they get older, please think carefully before you home school. I worked at a school and saw children who were home schooled, they really battled later in high school life.
I’ve homeschooled all three of my children, they’ve managed to make friends with no problems, what I will say though is that my children are more in tune with their own needs and desires, they don’t just follow the crowd or do something they don’t feel comfortable with just because everyone else is. School environment is not like real life, once kids leave school they’re faced with diverse ages, challenges and decisions that numerous studies show homeschoolers excel at, they’re independent learners and thinkers which sets them up for success in life.
I’ve also worked in schools, and met many home schoolers. Mostly high school. It really depends on the child. The ones I have worked with were at a much higher level and well adjusted and made friends. If done right, many home schoolers thrive and are more prepared for university and life in general compared to their counterparts.
A thought on homeschooling (coming from a retired public school teacher who is generally not a big fan): are there other expat families in your area? You can plan some co-op activities together (e.g. sports, field trips, enrichment activities like cooking, etc.). And there’s bound to be vast homeschool communities and resources available online, too!! 💕❤️
Hi Sandra. Certainly for John the sports aspect is so important. Rugby, cricket, athletics, rowing. All spots John was heavily involved with and captained teams of as a teenager. We need to really consider hard these sport issues.
Hi Newbys, thanks for the Q&A. When we moved to France my eldest went to an English speaking school while the younger ones all went to local French schools. My eldest never fitted in and left France as soon as he could whilst the youngsters fully integrated and even helped me integrate and learn the language. Having said that school can be a psychological torture and you have to be very aware and involved in your childs education!
Listening to you talk about how John knows so much about building and making things made me think you need to take some of that to heart Tara. You should not be ashamed of how your gardening turned out. You may not have harvested much but you learned lessons. I think the biggest lesson is don’t give up keep doing it, you will get better. And it’s proven to be not only good for your physical health but your mental health also. Keep m looking for to seeing your garden next year!❤❤❤
Most of my grandchildren are home schooled and they are doing very well. My daughter has 5 children is a school teacher and home schools. All of them are flying through school, go on field trips, interacting with friends. Have been on road trips through American States learning the history and explored beautiful places. So much one can do with home schooling. And they are safe.
I don't think school shootings are an issue in Portugal... And there are much less people that homeschool their children, so it isn't easy to have play dats or trips with other kids.
@@Strooisuiker you would be surprised how many people homeschool, I just did a brief search on homeschooling in Portugal and came up with so many groups, activities, events, learning groups etc. Portugal seems like a very accepting and flexible country in regards to education. Also you can still have play dates and trips with schooled kids.
Great Q and A. You have all come a long way. If you enjoyed Finland, you would love Labrador. Cold snowy, sunny winters and hot summers. If you don't like mosquitos or black flies, late May and September is a better time. If you love winter, you will love it there. Newfoundland and Labrador are one province but culturally very different. Either of them would be fabulous. Newfoundland has some pretty amazing icebergs and whale watching. I always loved traveling but my favorite places were rural areas. The welcomes were always better. I look forward to seeing your next travel vlogs.❤
Sandbags to hold down your tripod is standard film industry equipment - you can buy them, make them or just use plastic or other bags full of sand. It’s a great pro tip!
Please do send the children to school. It is so important for them to socialise with other children and learn the language. Their brains are like sponges at their age (I'm a retired primary school teacher). Also try just using duo lingo every day to learn Portuguese. It only takes a few minutes a day and really works. I moved to Spain 7 years ago and use it every day. I have had lessons as well but I am now pretty fluent in Spanish. Also did you sell your house in the Cotswolds?
Homeschooling mother here, please do what you feel is best for your own children, homeschooling is far more rewarding than people think. Kids can join sports and recreational clubs, as well as homeschool groups and get their needs fulfilled.
@@pumpkinpiex As a teacher I totally agree with you. Some children thrive at school environments but others don’t. Nowadays there is plenty of opportunities to socialise, school shouldn’t be the only option. I sent my three children to school but only one thrived the other two had a very traumatic experience. I now home educate my youngest and he is doing really well. English is my second language, 😮so please excuse my grammar errors etc
My wife and I moved to Portugal a year ago, and we both work online. The income can be really unstable, and there are times when we feel stressed, especially being in a new country. We’re starting to think about big life steps like buying a home and starting a family, but it’s scary at times. Watching you be so brave and building all of this from your TH-cam channel is really inspiring. ❤ 🇵🇹💚
I have absolutely enjoyed this episode. Not so much because of all the interesting questions and answers but 100 % because of your relaxed joyful attitude. I know you have been under so much stress and it seems that maybe som of that stress has been lifted or realigned. As always sending Love from my little island here in Florida. ❤
Homeschooling is great! There are so many opportunities for children to socialize. When I homeschooled, the challenge was finding time to do school work with all the social events. My sons got to meet state representatives and the governor, something that would not have happened if they attended traditional school. They also spent time not only with children their own age but also with younger and older children. A very well- rounded social experience. Here in the US, there are homeschool groups that teach specific subjects, so another resource for socialization not that it's needed.
Hi The Newby's great episode I really enjoyed hearing your answers from the Q&A. It's a good insight into your lives. I watch you every week and you answered a few questions I was wondering about. Im currently in the coastal town of Mablethorpe visiting my family but I can't miss my favourite TH-cam family 🥰
Hi. Since you live rural and there is not a lot of Portuguese children for the boys to play with I think you need to send them to school. If you lived in England it would be different. The boys will get to know the nearest children, make friends and learn the language so fast. If the boys get unhappy at school you can reconsider but I can not imagine they won’t. They are so social. If they have learning difficulties you can do school and a tutor. But that depends on whether you want to have Portuguese boys with roots or traveling international boys I think. Good luck. ❤
Also just wanna say that I think this is one of the best AMA’s I’ve seen. Most are boring with the hosts just answering questions, but popping in B roll was a great idea. And the music. Thanks again
I can’t believe you’ve only been together 5 years! You seem to have lived a lifetime already. Love you and all that you do. Thanks for a great episode, love that you’re so honest and open. ❤❤❤
Hey guys, usually I do not comment but i will leave a little of my personal feedback. I was born in Portugal and raised there until i was 11, and from my experience the school there was super important. I understand you want the boys to live in nature (which i also grew up in a place similar to your boys) and school will be a little opposite to that. Personally i think it will be a great place to socialize with other kids, learn the language and learn more about culture. I am not sure if school is still like on my time, but i remenber also doing theater and big parties at school where parents attended and it was so fun. I learned a lot during that time (even if i did not had the best grades in had fun and enjoyed the time there and made really good friends). In the end it will be your decison and i trully believe you will make the best decision for your boys. Also not sure if it was just my school but on the first grades someimes i missed school to go on trips and the teachers allowed it, i just needed to complete some extra work and bring it when i would return to portugal 😅
School is important for socialising. If they have great teachers, it wont matter that the playground is small. Just like a house, it's what happens inside the walls that make it a home. They will make friends, possibly life long friends, that they will have great adventures with on your farm over time. You will make friends with their friends' families and become more involved and welcomed into the community. There will be time for home schooling in the future if the local school doesnt ignite curiosity and joy into their learning, Volunteer some of your time at the school (I used to help kids with their reading and we helped with working bees, gardening days etc). This will help your Portuguese and sense of belonging in the community , Give it a go and see what unfolds 😊
I live in Colorado but when I was in 9th grade, we moved to Brazil, which is the only country in South America that speaks Portuguese. I learned that the younger you are, the faster you learn the language. Definitely let them go to a Portugal school. I have also found that most foreign countries have a lot of people that speak English.
We homeschooled. It was a great adventure!! BUT - you will make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time. Each child is different, each season has its own needs / opportunities, and the options can be overwhelming. Either way, with supportive and involved parents such as yourselves, your boys will learn amazing things!
Things will work out - they always do. When I reflect back over the 33yrs (since my husband died suddenly ) things have always worked out - never, ever, ever when Ive wanted them to, they have. Just keep the faith. You are both hard working and work together to make it work. I love rushing home from work at the hospital, here in the Deep South of New Zealand, and watching your latest TH-cam clip - so uplifting. Considering Im really fussy as to what I watch each week, you’re worth every minute! I only give my “like” and “Subscribe” to weekly updates like yours ❤😊
My daughter is having the same problem as far as school is concerned. My granddaughter is 5 years old. She is reading 2nd grade readers. She knows her addition and subtraction. The schools in our area usually don't advance kindergarteners. Therefore my daughter decided to home school her. She is very friendly and has lots of friend where she lives so I think she will do ok. It's hard to decide what is the best for your child but you will figure it out.
Hi guys, great Q+A, my advice re schooling is that its essential to send your kids to a standard school, they need social skills for their future success in dealing with the world around them, school will expose them to the world outside their little farm world, we all need friends, connections, diversity of personalities, language, I don't need to say any more, you both went to school and it has made you able to be tolerant and socially interact, like others have said, at least give it a try,, day 1 will be a heartbreaker but time makes things easier, good luck with whatever you choose to do because "the best laid plans...." cheers !!!🥰👍👍👍
Please don’t feel pressured to send your kids to traditional school, I started out this way, my youngest particularly, was a very free spirited, deep thinker, he struggled immensely with the rigidity of school, within a year we ended up homeschooling as I could see his light, his desire for knowledge, his unusual way of seeing the world disappearing. I’m so glad we took that leap from the “norm” because it has been immensely rewarding and successful, all 3 of my children have flourished beyond any expectations. People often don’t understand homeschool and give their opinions based on little to no experience.
Give yourself some grace on the Portuguese. It is one of the hardest languages to learn. My husband is a migrant from the Azores (to the US), we visit Portugal several times a year for about a month’s time each trip, my in-laws and extended in-laws almost ALL speak only Portuguese AND I took 4 terms of Portuguese at University and somehow, I still don’t speak it… It is one of the most difficult and frustrating things that I still haven’t picked it up - although I do understand quite a bit. Keep on and over time you will continue to pick it words little-by-little. Can’t wait to hear how the trip is going!❤
completely understand about your fears about education. All my four children went to small independent schools for the same reason. I would say, that if they don't go and mix with the local kids at school and go into their teenage years with them, then their whole feeling of belonging where you are will be affected. Growing up with other children is really important for socialisation and the occasional sleep over just doesn't do it. what a dilemma for you both.
With the amazing freedom you provide for your boys at home. I feel in my view, that them attending a local school would help with language for them and yourselves. The socialization the boys will have with children of there own age and other adults will help them become well rounded young men. ❤
One thing you can easily do for the boys only allow screen time in Portuguese for now. They will pick up pre school language quickly and you might as well if you join them at times. Kids love screen time and it should be limited so I’d use it to your advantage. I used that strategy with my kids when they were little and I needed them to speak and understand German to be able to communicate with their grandparents eventually.
My family lives in the countryside of southern Indiana. But I am so very lucky to have a school 10 mins away (in the tiniest “town”, no stop lights, just a few houses and a school) and they are actually a Finnish style school! My kids love it! So much outside time, so much hands on learning, no homework and the STEM education. Canaan Community Academy. I hope you can find the right thing for your kids when the time comes. Love the q & a. Thank you for being so personal!
As a teacher and parent I would say don't underestimate the fact that parents have so much more influence than you give yourselves credit for. School is an amazing place for social skillls and learning, children spend the majority of theirs lives at home, outside school you can give them all that you hope for them. You live in the perfect place to mitigate any worries you have. I tried.
Dear Tara & John It was wonderful to listen to all the questions being answered. Glad you are going to still build the underground rooms, some time in the future. It will be a very safe place to be, when there is extream heat in Portugal, and also a safe place when there is a threat of fire. The whole family would be safe there. Portuguise will gradually just develope as children grow, it will be very naturally, gradually just developed. I love watching your holidays so ....looking forward to Bornio and Thailand adventure.
Lovely Q&A… Come to NZ! It would be a perfect winter getaway for your family. Either spending the month in NZ or splitting it with Australia. Enjoy a southern summer and the beaches, the wildlife… a new country for John…. You will love it… but I guess I am a bit biased 🙂
John, 47 is young, my husband and I turned 77 this year so we are slowing down. For almost 15 years we took out Harley around the country and Canada. You will never be sorry you took your children traveling. Time flys, it so nice to see you both spending so much time with them. They are like little sponges soaking it all up . Bless all of you
I teach you Tara und John Portuguese and you can teach me more English than I know 😊. The boys in no time will speak Portuguese soon. Keep well,be happy...Beijinhos ❤
Someone told me that if I wanted to learn a language, I should take children's books in that language out of the library. How about reading in Portuguese to the boys at bedtime?
Thank you for sharing your precious moments with us. With parents like you any children will thrive at home or school all they need is love and someone to be interested in them. They have both by the bucket full. Love from a troubled uk you keep me sane and give me hope for a better world ❤
I taught for many years, and my thought regarding school for the boys is to send them to a local playgroup, if available, and see how they fare. They might be thrilled to speak Portuguese to their peers. Truthfully, I think your boys are probably ahead of most children their ages, due to having traveled and being exposed to many cultures. I know this from first-hand experience. My parents took me traveling often, and I skipped a grade, learned three languages, and always found school quite easy. Homeschooling can be tricky in terms of children learning social skills.
Hmmm this is so true. John also found school pretty easy, which made him, in his own words, a very lazy bad student. Getting school right for the boys is so important to us both, especially John. ❤️❤️❤️
Thankyou for your honesty and sharing. We would have loved ( and still would) to have had the adventures that you have had and are making. As 60 something Grandparents who are also still caring for elderly relatives, it is unlikely! However, if we could take the caravan on a months tour of Ireland or France, we would love it. The dream lives on!!
Let the boys watch Portuguese children videos and listen to Portuguese nursery songs. That is how my children learned English al though we do not speak English at home.
The best relationships came out of friendships , no matter how long it lasts before love story come around .My hubby and I have known each other for few months and been dating for only three months and in April next year we will celebrating our 20th anniversary ( three children ) . So excited to see The Big House progress , so far you have done a wonderful job on your farm 🥰
I think, as a teacher, my concern is language development and socialization for the boys. Home schooling with a tutor is easier when children have experience with time management and focus towards lessons. A classroom will teach a bit of self-discipline, language development, and let them make friends. Home schooling isolates a child. That worries me.
Couldn’t disagree more. Homeschooling allows the parents to put a lot of new, fun experiences into their curriculum. There are wonderful home school groups that meet and do fun activities..sports…and just to play together. Our grandsons were home schooled until 8th grade. They are well rounded, well educated, well MANNERED men now with full college degrees in their chosen fields.. if I had young children right now, here in America, the public school system is the LAST place I would put them. Lots of changes needed to say the least.
Were you home schooling in a foreign country? I imagine finding a home schooling group in English is a little more difficult if the community is in Portugal.
@@AbigailGerlach-zt1shit’s only as difficult as you make it. My sister is currently doing it in her country. The children are learning language from each other. They’re doing home schooling activities and even shared specialty classes. There’s a range of ages. It’s beautiful and the older ones take care of the younger ones. They’re learning more about culture and life.
I think homeschooling is a great idea! I agree with your perspective on school and the outdoors. Bring your kids to extra curricular activities and they will pick up the language SO quick.
since you said you want our thoughts.... I sent my daughter to school through 4th grade, when she had her reading, writing and maths firmly started...as well as language - and THEN homeschooled her. The important part if you choose to homeschool is to pull them out JUST prior to losing that 'sense of wonder'.
Private Portuguese tutor, yes! How are the experiences of the Scotters’ children with the school? It can be quite important to play and speak with Portuguese children too. Learning a language is sooo easy for a kid! I am so endlessly grateful for my 5 languages. But after living in Ireland so almost 25 years I feel a bit ashamed that I only know a few words in Irish, it’s so special and complicated! - 🛌 „Depending how we sleep“ 👶 good answer!!!😇
Hi Newbies, I think the boys would benefit much more if they mingled and learned with other local children, with additional out of school activities in the farm, sports, etc.
Being a father of 2 myself, I would advise you to send the boys to a local Portuguese School, they will learn the Language in no time, they will make friends and learn the culture, and you could always teach them your own cultural habits the same way you preserved yours by growing up in Africa with your parents. Let them interact with other kids their age and it would be a plus all around. I respect your opinion, but I personally think that home schooling is over-rated and over-protective. They have the whole farm to enjoy and be out all the time, but going to school will teach them discipline and a sense for order, skills that they would need when they grow up and move on into society, they might not want to live on a farm when they grow up.
I have had a long time not being able to follow all your achievements ....our internet connection not working, and just got able to follow all your last achievements were a real joy being able to see all you have been working on...and in Portuguese for you....verdadeiramente adorei te reverer 💯🥰💫
Whaaaaat? Five years? Those years of friendship really show, what a great foundation for your romantic life. I really thought you'd been together for 10 or so, and just waited to have children. That was amazing, thank you for sharing all that information which we are so nosy about.
One way to really help the Newbies is to interact in the comment section, and interact with other commenters. The more comment interaction, the more their channel is pushed by TH-cam to more viewers who are unaware of them. Often I comment as I'm watching the video because things just make me laugh out loud.😂
Homeschooling witj a Portuguese tutor sounds like a wonderful solution. Both our kids went to Waldorf /Steiner schools and did well and our daughters boys have had both a Nature school experience for a year and now are in a local school which the eldest likes. He is struggling, because of being bilingual ( they live in italy) and the youngest really doesnt like school , although he speaks more Italian than english. So, choose what suits your family and dont worry what the viewers say. I know lots of adults who were homeschooled and they are all amazing, well rounded, accomplished adults.
Growing up bilingual and learning two extra languages I assure you that sending your boys to a Portugeese school is going to be the best language learning you can give them. Having a teacher come to your house is not going to work. I have been that teacher. Please, please, please make it a priority for them if it's not a priority for yourselves which honestly makes me sad but I know life gets buisy.
Det är så kul att följa allt ni gör så jag ser fram emot varje gång som ni lägger ut en ny wideo. Jag tycker att ni är så rara emot varandra och en så mysig familj. Önskar er all lycka i framtiden.❤
Please send the children to school. It is important for them to speak the language and navigate the culture. They have a whole farm to play in...A school environment is essential.
Send them to school. This builds character and social skills. I remember being in uni with a guy who was home schooled. He just couldn't cope. Where you can please send them.
There are many kinds of support groups in homeschool. My daughter's did well in social places. My daughter did 2 masters at a Christian University. Hope this helps you. Thank you.❤
What a nice and cozy Q&A with that wonderful view in the back! Looking forward to some new exciting content on the other channel soon! 😊 Oh and also, education in Portugal is free and compulsory between the ages of 6 and 18. Homeschooling is quite strictly regulated and complicated to legalize, so even if you didn't quite like the playgrounds, I would still recommend to let the boys attend.
Learning Portuguese is the Last Thing you needed to do these past 3 years! I am so annoyed by these couch critics! You've been Really Busy, Really Productive! ❤❤❤❤
You have both been so busy establishing your farm and building & travelling. And! Most importantly & successfully! creating & parenting 2 wonderful little boys. What time would you ever have to learn a new language as well!? I think in the near future you will have more time to devote to learning Portuguese. All in good time. Same re maintaining a veggie garden - some seasons there is time for that; some seasons there is not. Next year is another opportunity.
When I would struggle with a task and I would tell my mother, “I can’t do it”, she would respond by saying, “Can’t never did nothing”. Her response taught me to try again, it is a motto that I have always lived by. And google has made it much easier too.😊
Don’t condemn your boys to an isolated life as strangers in their own country by home schooling them. They live in Portugal. Allow them to develop the skills and cultural knowledge they willneed to make their way in their homeland, even though it’s not your own. Enroll them in the local school
I am sorry to say it but I couldn’t disagree more. It’s none of our business and so far I trust the Newbys 100% Apart from that, all the best from Chile 🇨🇱 🤗✨✨✨
I totally disagree that homeschooling is isolating. Our five adult grandchildren were homeschooled and they are amazing selfless individuals they are productive members of society and they are compassionate people. Homeschooling is a very viable way to educate children. Making sure that your children are happy and healthy is the goal of raising children. There is no way that the Newby children will be isolated. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦
I loved this segment. I feel like now i know your family better! Great story of how you both met! Thank you for being so open about your life! I will see you wonderful people on Sunday 😉 much love from Michigan ❤❤
Borneo was on the top of our bucket list but doubt if we will be able to do it now due to health reasons. I am more than happy with the variety of places we’ve been lucky enough to visit. You go for it while you are able to.

❤
I think exposing them to different cultures and experiences is a good thing. Although the school space may be smaller than what they are used to, it gives them the opportunity to grow appreciating what they have. Not to mention they’ll learn to speak the native language of where they’re growing up ❤
❤️❤️🙏🙏
I don’t understand how y’all don’t have triple the subscribers! Your channel is the best.

Hi Family,
I wanted to bring your attention to Portuguese laws regarding education.
A good advice regardless of where you wish to move.
But is it really an option though? I thought attending school was obligatory between ages 6-18 in Portugal?
Thanks Caroline. ❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Dont worry about the concrete playground! Theyve got all the space in the world at home. Life is about balance & im sure being part of a different part of society will make more rounded boys.
❤️❤️❤️
I'm absolutely FOR local schools for the first few years, they'll learn the language FAST and become part of the community.... tutors can't do that, other kids do. That doesn't mean it has to be forever, but I can intuit that it's actually you adults who want more flexibility to go when and where you want and not be tied down to a school year. 🤣
Good points. ❤️❤️
That’s really good to know friend. Thank you. 🙏❤️
Thanks Jack!
Thank you for being so open in your answers
I, too, think your channel is the best...I am sure it wi continue to grow, and flourish. I am so excited that you are building your beautiful dream house..and that we will he part of your journey. Sending hugs to you all and pats to Obie
Don't worry. As soon as your children start attending a Portuguese school, they will teach you Portuguese, because they will naturally be bilingual
Children are great teachers. I learned much of my Spanish by interacting with my students. I taught them English inside the classroom but once we got out I learned from them.
Muchas gracias mis niñas. Saludos!
We think so too.
That's in the states where there is a lot of support for home schoolers, it won't be as easy to socialize the kids in Portugal.
And you, the parent, spoke the local language.
Thanks Lisa! ❤️❤️
Ola beautiful family. You go learn Portuguese with your children’s, let them go to school they love to be together making friends, go to party birthdays . See you Sunday 😊
Good evening precious Newbys. Big hugs, from Cathy, Port ELIZABETH. South Africa. Enjoying you all. 😊😊😊😊😊

Thank you John for talking so heartly of Finland!❤ kiitos paljon ❤❤❤❤
Thanks Anu! Ahhhh Suomi. It is where I spent my younger adult life, it’s definitely imprinted on me. I miss it often. 🇫🇮🇫🇮❤️❤️
Lived in NZ from the age of 15 to 26 then came back to Devon, but what an amazing country, you’ve got to get there to see for yourselves.
Yes!

Thank you Carole. That’s so kind friend. ❤️❤️
Thanks Hazel!
It helps!
Thank you so much friend. ❤️❤️❤️
I lived in Germany as my husband was in the army and I only learned the basics and I got by. The boy's will pick it up as they learn. Just got to love you all ❤
❤️❤️❤️
John is a youthful-looking 47 year old! You two make a lovely couple ❤
❤️❤️
Love his honesty about when he first met Tara ❤
Thank you Dawn ❤️❤️
A thought on homeschooling (coming from a retired public school teacher who is generally not a big fan): are there other expat families in your area? You can plan some co-op activities together (e.g. sports, field trips, enrichment activities like cooking, etc.). And there’s bound to be vast homeschool communities and resources available online, too!! 💕❤️
This is exactly what we do, it’s so refreshing to read this from a retired teacher, often it’s the complete opposite
Hi Sandra. Certainly for John the sports aspect is so important. Rugby, cricket, athletics, rowing. All spots John was heavily involved with and captained teams of as a teenager. We need to really consider hard these sport issues.
Do not give up on your convictions. Do what your inner beliefs think is truly best for your children. Lovely video, take care 🫶❤️
Yes! Thank you!
I love the idea of home schooling as a mum my experience of schools are horrendous they are so toxic these days better of at home ❤
❤️❤️🙏🙏
Love is in the air guys. I have been with my love for 46 years that's a lot of love and patience. ♥️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hugs, guys. You're both the best.
Thank you Wendy!
That’s good information Claire. Thanks friend. ❤️❤️
Keep m looking for to seeing your garden next year!❤❤❤
That’s so true Paulette. Thank you friend. ❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing!!
Love your honesty, love this channel, great person you two. No question 🙋♀️
Thanks so much!
Thanks Peter. In KL right now. Crusoe just shook hands with a monkey… kind of! ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Retired teacher here…100% agree with attending local school to establish relationships and so much more outside the home.
Retired teacher here and I also agree .
Homeschooling mother here, please do what you feel is best for your own children, homeschooling is far more rewarding than people think.
Kids can join sports and recreational clubs, as well as homeschool groups and get their needs fulfilled.
Thanks Linda! ❤️

As a teacher I totally agree with you.

Thanks Lydia. Well spotted friend.❤️❤️
The boys are living life to the fullest. We know that unplanned play, learning skills on their own, problem solving will make then thrive.
Thanks Marjorie!
Thank you ❤️❤️
Hi The Newby's great episode I really enjoyed hearing your answers from the Q&A. It's a good insight into your lives. I watch you every week and you answered a few questions I was wondering about. Im currently in the coastal town of Mablethorpe visiting my family but I can't miss my favourite TH-cam family 🥰
Thank you so much!
Good luck. ❤
👍❤️🙏
Also just wanna say that I think this is one of the best AMA’s I’ve seen. Most are boring with the hosts just answering questions, but popping in B roll was a great idea. And the music. Thanks again

I can’t believe you’ve only been together 5 years! You seem to have lived a lifetime already. Love you and all that you do. Thanks for a great episode, love that you’re so honest and open. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!!
❤️🙏❤️
I live in Colorado but when I was in 9th grade, we moved to Brazil, which is the only country in South America that speaks Portuguese. I learned that the younger you are, the faster you learn the language. Definitely let them go to a Portugal school. I have also found that most foreign countries have a lot of people that speak English.
Thanks Paula!
We homeschooled. It was a great adventure!! BUT - you will make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time. Each child is different, each season has its own needs / opportunities, and the options can be overwhelming. Either way, with supportive and involved parents such as yourselves, your boys will learn amazing things!
❤
Thanks Chrystal. That’s super helpful friend. ❤️❤️
Thank you Judith. Sorry to hear about your husband friend. That’s very sad. Love to you and NZ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Rose. ❤️❤️
Thanks Frances! ❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏
Thanks Heather!
completely understand about your fears about education.
Good advice. Thank you.
Nice idea!!
Thanks Tara!
I tried.
Thanks Philip. That’s great advice friend. ❤️❤️
Dear Tara & John
It was wonderful
to listen to all the questions being answered.
Glad you are going to still build the underground rooms, some time in the future.
It will be a very safe place to be, when there is extream heat in Portugal,
and also a safe place when there is a threat of fire.
The
whole family would be safe there. Portuguise will gradually just develope as children grow, it will be very naturally, gradually just developed. I love watching your holidays so ....looking forward to
Bornio and Thailand
adventure.
Thanks Lesley!
Oh, I would definitely homeschool , good plan. But, you will decide when the time has come. Good on ya.
Thank you Margarethe! ❤️❤️❤️
See you Sunday Newbys ♥️🌻♥️
John, 47 is young, my husband and I turned 77 this year so we are slowing down. For almost 15 years we took out Harley around the country and Canada. You will never be sorry you took your children traveling. Time flys, it so nice to see you both spending so much time with them. They are like little sponges soaking it all up . Bless all of you
❤️❤️❤️
I teach you Tara und John Portuguese and you can teach me more English than I know 😊. The boys in no time will speak Portuguese soon. Keep well,be happy...Beijinhos ❤
Thank you! 😃
Someone told me that if I wanted to learn a language, I should take children's books in that language out of the library. How about reading in Portuguese to the boys at bedtime?
Yes,that’s how I learned to speak English. Reading those books to children was very helpful.
why are you ashamed ? you are clearly working at what is most important at the time for your family
That’s a great idea.
Thank you for sharing your precious moments with us. With parents like you any children will thrive at home or school all they need is love and someone to be interested in them. They have both by the bucket full. Love from a troubled uk you keep me sane and give me hope for a better world ❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
Let the boys watch Portuguese children videos and listen to Portuguese nursery songs. That is how my children learned English al though we do not speak English at home.
Great idea!
@@Bindismom exactly, as a homeschooling mum of 3 I couldn’t agree more 🙏🏼
@@AbigailGerlach-zt1shit’s only as difficult as you make it. My sister is currently doing it in her country. The children are learning language from each other. They’re doing home schooling activities and even shared specialty classes. There’s a range of ages. It’s beautiful and the older ones take care of the younger ones. They’re learning more about culture and life.
Similar concerns Abigail for sure. We need to really think this one through. ❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
UK primary teacher of 30 years here: children need to mix with other children.
❤️❤️🙏🙏
My father & brother are builders, so I really look forward to watching your house being built. John has learned a lot & is so skilled.
Thanks Lisa!
I agree wholeheartedly. They have plenty of opportunity to splash in mud puddles. Developing social skills with peers is essential.
Thank you. That’s strong and solid advice. ❤️🙏
I have had a long time not being able to follow all your achievements ....our internet connection not working, and just got able to follow all your last achievements were a real joy being able to see all you have been working on...and in Portuguese for you....verdadeiramente adorei te reverer 💯🥰💫
Hi Ilona! Great to hear from you friend. Hope the internets fixed for you now ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Whaaaaat? Five years? Those years of friendship really show, what a great foundation for your romantic life. I really thought you'd been together for 10 or so, and just waited to have children. That was amazing, thank you for sharing all that information which we are so nosy about.
Thank you so much!
Enjoyed your q and a's.
Love both of your channels and usually forward your Bee videos onto friends.
Thanks so much
Once your boys are in the school system, you're portugese will come.
Thanks Debbie!
One way to really help the Newbies is to interact in the comment section, and interact with other commenters. The more comment interaction, the more their channel is pushed by TH-cam to more viewers who are unaware of them.
Often I comment as I'm watching the video because things just make me laugh out loud.😂
❤️❤️❤️❤️
The boys will teach you Portuguese once they play with other kids that speak Portuguese...
Thanks Mary!!
❤️❤️❤️
Growing up bilingual and learning two extra languages I assure you that sending your boys to a Portugeese school is going to be the best language learning you can give them. Having a teacher come to your house is not going to work. I have been that teacher. Please, please, please make it a priority for them if it's not a priority for yourselves which honestly makes me sad but I know life gets buisy.
Agreed. Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. ❤️
Det är så kul att följa allt ni gör så jag ser fram emot varje gång som ni lägger ut en ny wideo. Jag tycker att ni är så rara emot varandra och en så mysig familj. Önskar er all lycka i framtiden.❤
Thanks Iris! ❤️❤️
Please send the children to school. It is important for them to speak the language and navigate the culture. They have a whole farm to play in...A school environment is essential.
Schools are just indoctrination camps, home school much better, healthy happy children.
Thanks Julie. ❤️❤️
It’s not up to you Julie, nothing wrong with homeschooling. Everyone has an opinion
I love your life, your enthusiasm, your zest for life and dedication to your farm and family. Its a great example for others❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you.❤
❤️❤️
What a nice and cozy Q&A with that wonderful view in the back! Looking forward to some new exciting content on the other channel soon! 😊
Oh and also, education in Portugal is free and compulsory between the ages of 6 and 18. Homeschooling is quite strictly regulated and complicated to legalize, so even if you didn't quite like the playgrounds, I would still recommend to let the boys attend.
Thanks so much! 😊
Learning Portuguese is the Last Thing you needed to do these past 3 years! I am so annoyed by these couch critics! You've been Really Busy, Really Productive! ❤❤❤❤
True that! The Portuguese will come naturally eventually, no need to stress it!
Thanks Mary! ❤️❤️
And google has made it much easier too.😊
So true Donna!
It’s none of our business and so far I trust the Newbys 100%
Apart from that, all the best from Chile 🇨🇱
🤗✨✨✨
I totally disagree that homeschooling is isolating. Our five adult grandchildren were homeschooled and they are amazing selfless individuals they are productive members of society and they are compassionate people. Homeschooling is a very viable way to educate children. Making sure that your children are happy and healthy is the goal of raising children. There is no way that the Newby children will be isolated. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Carmen.
I loved this segment. I feel like now i know your family better! Great story of how you both met! Thank you for being so open about your life! I will see you wonderful people on Sunday 😉 much love from Michigan ❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the question and answer today. I really enjoyed getting to know you better.
Thanks Marilyn!
Your family has a great wonderful precious life♥️🙏
We are so lucky and grateful. ❤️❤️
Borneo was on the top of our bucket list but doubt if we will be able to do it now due to health reasons. I am more than happy with the variety of places we’ve been lucky enough to visit. You go for it while you are able to.
Thanks Maggie, coming soon on @thenewbysexplore
Loved hearing your stories!!!
