  • Mood For A Day by Yes (Steve Howe)
    Guitar Lesson by Damon Wood
Lesson #50! Had to choose something epic.
I've known this song for at least 35 years.
    Fantastic Steve Howe composition.
I break apart all the parts very slowly and do several reviews to keep it all in check. It's a masterpiece of technique, melody and counterpoint.
Steve Howe has always been one of my favorite musicians and Yes one of my favorite bands so it's only fitting to pay tribute to this great song as my 50th lesson!
Any questions or requests, please put them in the comments! Thanks!!
Long live YES and Steve Howe!
    00:22 Part 1-Intro

    06:25 Part 3- D descending
    09:31 Big descending run
    09:52 Review

By far and away the best break down of the song yet! Thank you for such great and detailed descriptions! I’d learned the song long ago with different fingerings (and lots of minor mistakes) so have been trying to relearn it correctly - you’ve made it possible! Thank you so very much!

Yes, explained w/exactly the pacing and description style my brain absorbs most efficiently. I've always been able to play about half of this song but never had the patience to fill in the blanks. Thanks for doing it for me...

WOW! I actually just learned this from watching LickNRiff's YT Channel but I got to say, this one is the best. His would be a solid 2nd. best... #1 rule of thumb when consulting instructional guitar videos on You Tube... ALWAYS TRUST THE GUY with the Frank Zappa book in the background...

Haha! I love the Zappa comment. Fantastic! Glad you dig the lesson. What a tune, right? I met Steve Howe's family after a James Brown show at Royal Albert Hall. They were awesome. I've seen him play twice. Once in Vegas and once in Buenos Aires. One of my very favorite musicians of all time!

@@DamonWoodGuitarLessons That's really cool you had that experience. I always liked YES but never was SUPER into them... Not to say, I didn't realize the levity of their talent and contributions to PROG ROCK. Now that I'm 60,.my appreciation has expanded and I'm more keen on recognizing epic talent. My really close friend was telling me about how his brother could play this song and I definitely remembered it as well as most of the songs from FRAGILE. I decided I needed to add some Baroquish/Flamencish to my repertoire. When I first sat with this piece, I thought... there's NO FUCKING WAY I'munnadodat... but thanks to guys like you and Assaf, I have indeed been able to tackle it. I'm almost there. I just need to get up to tempo and smooth out the transitions between movements. What I appreciate about your approach is that you're very thorough, you play it at tempo and then slow it down and most useful to me in working out some fingering details... you use your camera expertly to show exact finger placements which is something the other guy didn't do quite so well. When I REALLY master this, I will post it on my YT channel and also write up step-by-step instructions of my process in learning this masterpiece so I can hopefully help others to also learn it. THANKS AGAIN BROTHER!
