Love the video, a note about the RAM - it is DDR4 as you can see in the product page you have in your video. Another note - I was able to install a 32 gb of DDR4 memory without issue - so that should help with the bottleneck! I just got this this week and currently playing around with proxmox 8!
I have been using Proxmox in my home lab for many years now in a clustered configuration. I started with some mini servers that ended up having issues with disk drive and memory errors. I suspected they were just not high quality systems. I then moved to Intel NUC systems. Later I replaced those with fan-less systems. As I have upgraded my systems, the power consumption is one consideration in my choice of hardware. The others are the maximum amount of memory the system can be configured with and the running noise level during use. I constantly find that I run into memory constraints long before the CPU usage is an issue. I would love to see more people focus on the amount of noise produced by computing equipment in general. After spending a lot of time during my career in loud computer rooms which has significantly damaged my hearing, I am now sensitive to noisy devices. Maybe you could focus some of your reviews on units that are fan-less or as silent as possible. I'm sure many have no idea how damaging fan noise can be on your ears and manufacturers simply don't seem to care very much.
@@VirtualizationHowto I am currently running systems purchased from Protectli. Three VP4670 for my home network and three VP2420 for my test lab. Along with a couple other devices from them running OPNsense as my firewall devices. I am tired of dealing with low quality systems that fail in mysterious ways and cost me more in time and effort than paying for better quality systems backed by a reputable company.
how well do you figure a lightweight machine like this could handle ollama and jellyfin alongside docker? i want to host a couple lightweight containerized home applications ive written alongside some of these open source utilities but i feel like jellyfin @4k alone might hurt perf enough to need a separate server and im new to ai and have no idea what to expect on that front
I'm currently running proxmox on an Intel nuc 12 and it's been working great. I'm even planning on trying eventually microstack as an alternative to proxmox
How would this handle transcoding a 1gb video file with ffmpeg? I’m looking at it as kubernetes worker node, and my most intensive task that my containerized Jenkins agent runs daily involves ffmpeg trancoding. The CPU fan on my 12th gen i7-7700k spins up whenever that job runs. Otherwise it’s silent.
I couldn't get it to recognize my 1tb m.2. Tried multiple m. 2s. Any tips? It would never see the drive when I tried to install PM. However it Took Home Assistant no problem. Makes no sense
@camaycama7479 this is the beauty of a hypervisor. It is scheduling CPU time behind the scenes. However, this is pushing the limitations of this little CPU as you will see the CPU wait time start creeping up by overprovisioning it like this.

Nice Video! Is a PCi passtrouch possible with the Host GPU? some changes in the Bios is not possible like Enable SVM/Virtualization Mode Enable VT-d Enable SR-IOV Enable IOMMU Got error 43 with the Intel UHD Grapihcs
@orkuncanberk6818 Thank you for the comment! I have not had very good luck with PCI passthrough on the mini PCs with built-in GPUs. Let me know if this helps. Also, check out the forums if you need help with any other questions you may have in the home lab...thank you again. www.virtualizationhowto.com/community
I'm looking at getting a few(x3) 5700u to make a cluster. 8c/16t 25tdp up, 16gb ram I'll upgrade to 32gb/max64. You can have 1 go down to upgrade/fix the 2 will carry over.
Do you think a N95 would be ok to use? The N95 uses even less energy than a N100. What about the RAM, I hear it is only a single ram and the new Intel cpu can't support dual.
@markconstable It would be great if you could share your experiences over on the VHT forums: create a topic over on the VHT forums here: www.virtualizationhowto.com/community. Thank you for the comment!
@mcrotbot thank you for the comment. It is XCP-ng which is a free Xen-based hypervisor. Reach out to me on the forums: www.virtualizationhowto.com/community

32gb with the s12 n100 cpu? How Come?
@@ronenavivmemory intensive apps?
I'd be interested to see how something like this fares against one of the lower power Ryzens like the 5500U or 6600U.

@jamesGreen-gv4yn, what type of system are you running now? Really like to see what everyone else has discovered. Thanks again for the comment!

Installed proxmox on this little computer, I got pretty high IO delay, anything you experienced?

Great demo. I was suprised a power sipping N100 would do so good.

Do you think the s12 mini is enought to serve content and hardware decode with the igpu passthrought on jellyfin or plex?
good Q! I think it will do well with quicksync support.
I’m curious how well it will do with cpu intensive ffmpeg jobs.

Keen for a few more similar comparisons, love small labs like this
Onscreen text/description will really help the delivery 💡
How on earth can you run so many VM at the same time with only 4 threads?? Also, does the s12 support IOMMU?

If I download the Proxmox 8 ISO, will I install it straight away without any problems?
These cheap but fast nodes could cluster well. Add a 4 TB sdd (cheap) for clustered storage between 3 nodes.

Can you test MINIX Z100-0dB ? Fanless mini PC with Intel N100 CPU , 16+512GB SSD and Windows11 Pro pre-installed.
Esse MiniPC aguenta a carga ligado direto ?
I've always used ZFS, so it was interesting to see how much LESS ram that LVM uses.

Is it normal to get that double courser on the windows VM?
@mr.domingues that doesn't sound normal to me.
Thank you.
How is is performance of windows 10 virtual os?

I did install proxmox on a beelink and it was a perfect disaster, vm became unavailable very frequently. I moved to a NUC 12 and wonderful!
Oh, really? What do you think the problem was?
A lot of these S12pros gets bricked and I think it is the SSD frying itself as there is no fan to cool it.

Could you try/take a look at the minisforum npb7?
I just ordered 3x minisforum npb6 for Proxmox Cluster. I really like the dual 2.5Gb nic
