    this man is so endearing; a true martial artist. i currently practice muay thai and have done kyokushin karate for a little before but none of that matters. people can continue to argue about effectiveness of an art but martial arts is far more than just fighting. this man clearly lives for karate and is a true example of what a martial artist should be. it seems like he embodies karate in its pure, unadulterated form. that is what i love.

    I have been fortunate to train, at times, under Masters Mikami, Okazaki, even Nakayama a couple of times, but Master Ochi is so freaking cool. What a great attitude! OSS!!!

    I don't know all japanese senseis, but I have the honour to know Ochi Sensei from his seminars in Germany. He is always a kind and very humorous Sensei who also smiles overbearingly when men do Karate (as to be seen on other You-tube videos with Ochi sensei).

    Well, he's been living in Germany since 1970. He's the current national coach of the German JKA section. His German is quite fluent, and learning from him, even as occasionally as I managed it was as much fun as honour - he actually takes the time to work with "normal" hobbyist karatekas, too.
    He might be mixing German and English, too. Never quite know with him.

    Been doing Martial Arts for 56 years. Teaching, completing nationally and in internationally. Your biggest opponent is always yourself. You over coming yourself. Some think it is their opponents, it's not. It is yourself you are learning about, learn what is going on inside your body, your mind. your thoughts, your feelings ..... first seek to know yourself and conquer yourself, know how your body and mind works. First seek to control yourself before seeking to control or over come others. Often we think ... the mind has to control the body... this is a yes and No. When your mind has the control, the body won't rule all by it's self... yes but........>>>>> , instead we want them both to work together. Harmony. With intelligence they work together. Listen to your body but don't confuse what it is saying. Understand your body. Your body wants to save energy just in-case it is needed. What does this mean? It will say it is tired and out of energy when it is not. It will say it is hungry when it only wants to refuel before burning up saved energy (fat cells). This is the physical realm of life and martial arts. To get into the mental realm, you need to push pass this on a daily basis and memorize how it feels to continue when your body say it is too exhausted to move. When the body is too tired to hold you up and do things, it is your mind that wills you to go on. Memorize this. Do every day and learn the feeling well. It is like any emotion, laughing, crying, happiness, love, joy, sadness, anger. mad, glad............. we all know how it feels when we cry or great happiness. These emotions are duplicate able. So learning to completely push yourself into complete exhaustion day after day, learn to feel and know how it feels... learning to memorize this feeling is how we can always have it at will. Most all humans only play with the idea of this, thus they are always in the physical realm of martial arts. They will speak of incredible feats, but sadly never able to duplicate them. They accidentally got it right, but not enough to be able to memorize how it was to duplicate it. Thus i often laugh. Being a martial artist is liken to an actor in the beginning. (you might be thinking? How is that) To be a master, first you act the part, think as a master, do as a master........... at first you are not at the level, but have to still think and do as best you can as how a master thinks and does things. This is the road of a master. You keep thinking and doing as a master, even brainwashing yourself into believing it. You are acting as a master! You act as a master, do as a master thinks, until one day you are the master. You no longer are acting the part of a master, you are a master. I was taught this. To be a master, you have to do as a master thinks and does, at first it may be an act, keep at it and it will become the real thing. The true mind set is knowing how to think and how it is to be done. Copy it until the copy becomes you naturally.

    @neggo, you are so right. karate is for the self, the one, for the art, to self improve to be better than yourself, that's what I love about it. Unfortunately too many people have no true idea of what it's really all about. They only see violence or someone who's trying to act tough, there are many whom mock it as a weaker art, I'd really truly like to know

    It would be interesting to find out who added those three hops and what they were thinking? I understand the whole wanting to end at the same spot you started, what I mean is the application of the movements. Wado-ryu stylist Iaian Abernethy thinks its an arm break and takedown. Jesse Enkamp thinks that's just nonsense and that its just _"filler"_ to get back to the original start point.
    In both the the shorin-ryu and shito-ryu versions the person finishes the kata at the final (covered) punch. In the shudokan version the person steps backwards with each punch. All three systems are "siblings" to shotokan.

    But I assume you do understand that you only need one good techique to finish a fight. Trying to weaken your opponent by using low kicks with the shin is just a different approach. This doesn't make a particular style better or stronger than others. A strong punch in the throat always terminates a fight regardless the style it came form or how strong are your shins. Merry Christmas to all karate buffs.

    In my limited experience, the point beats the edge 9 times out of 10, ie an oi tsuki tends to be faster than a hook. Kicking with the shin strikes me as unwise, considering the ease with which shins may be broken; a correctly set gedan barai might do that. And let's not even talk about what a lateral shift may let me do with your knee.
    In the end, technique doesn't matter that much anyway. Skill and will matter more than what your school calls itself.

They allways smile overbearingly when they see women do Karate, they did it in the 70'tees and they apparently still find it a bit funny !! apart from that, they have my outmost respect because of their patience...

  • @CoriolanusAtrox
    @CoriolanusAtrox 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Funny, since there's actually a kata called Empi, which, yes, does include that technique. Personally, I wouldn't want to try for someone's face with my knee, unless they were on their knees already - that sort of technique leaves you very unbalanced as you focus on attack to the exclusion of all else. Fine if it works, but if not, you just opened yourself to a world of hurt.

    lol why does everyone say that? Of course if an old man and a Thai fighter get into a ring the old mans gonna lose. Karate is not all about violence and fighting. Its a way of life and self defense. If they meet in the street and the old man survives, his style whatever it is has served him. Everyone thinks its about scoring KO's. Karate is about the perfection of oneself but I guess if you don't do it you wouldn't understand.
