      @@fiotai935 You can't blame China's earlier poverty on the west. That's such a simplistic thought. Many poor coutries are not colonised but they are suffering under corrupt leaders. A country's wealth depends on it's leadership. China had generations of emperors who did nothing to grow the country, except enjoy the wealth the country offers. Later after the emperors were overthrown, the governance was replaced by communism, the system that doesn't reward hardwork and innovation. After a long time only they had recent good and strong leaders who are forward thinking.

      I am a Chinese native. Many Chinese retired elderly people here will get up early to exercise, and some of them go to dance at night. This is very common in China. On the contrary, young people are more inclined to go to the gym or indoor sports, probably because most of the time is spent on work. For example, in addition to my daily work, I often help foreign friends choose Chinese names in my spare time. It has been 4 years now.

    the banging, against a tree or against railing, any sort of hard surface, is to "break and rebuild" muscles so they are more resistant to damage. my old wing chun routine includes hitting my forearms and shoulders against a brick wall to dampen pain sensitivity again training on the wooden dummy. rugby training i was training my shins against trees. i guess more commonly recognized in pop culture is how you see Muay Thai fighters condition their body in training to withstand attacks. but in general, light hits like these help blood circulation as well as reducing muscle degredation. similar to the leg rolling exercise you were doing.

      i should also add that considering the old man banging his back against a tree is Chinese (this is also prevalent in Japan, Korea, and some parts of SE Asia), it's basically the equivalent to having a child or grandchild massaging the back and upper shoulders of the grandpa/grandma with his little fists or there are these wooden mallets with rubber tips(敲背锤) you can buy for this purpose. it's generally called 槌背, although different regions have their local slang.

    After watching this video, I feel so embarrassed haha, can't even lift my own weight, these elders are totally a motivation for us "younger" kids. Thanks, Amy, always enjoy your videos, age is totally not a thing for them it's just a number, they wouldn't be offended if you asked them but here it's like no no-no. That 86 year old is killing it.

    • @sigerlion8608
      @sigerlion8608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Age is a point of pride for the older people in China. It's like "see, I've made it this far and I've still got it." And Chinese culture respects and venerate older people. The don't ask about age thing is totally a Western concept that most Asians wouldn't understand or agree with.

      Many people retire much earlier in China in their 50s. Generally speaking, Chinese culture didn't work people to death and trapped them in debt so they had to keep working. After the 2000s and Westernization, things are kinda different and worse for the younger generation IMO.

    I also noticed many of them love to exercise or dance in an open area and they weren't shy at all. I love that they enjoyed doing what they do and it's really normal there -- nobody thinks it's weird. I actually like that.

    These people are so impressive! It is clearly evident that they stay fit not just by the exercising, but also by socializing with each other which probably helps them all to have a beneficially healthy attitude. It's a shame that if you tried to make parks like this in the USA, the equipment would be instantly vandalized and the citizens would all get mugged, robbed, and harassed - - this speaks volumes about the true nature and culture of the two countries and their people.
