  • I recently bought a flip phone because smartphones offer too many distractions which I can't afford to have. I now feel better than ever and my focus has never been higher.

So thrilled to see more people ditching social media all together. I've been off for 2 months now, and I feel a great sense of peace. I was reaching nearly 60k followers on IG, and everyone was so confused as to why I'd delete with such a following - in all honesty, it was just strange to have that many people aware of my existence.
I hope this video reaches many and inspires others to do the same ❤

When I’m out in the world, I feel like I actually present in a way that I never used to be. I try to buy small editions of books so I can keep them in my back pocket for bus rides or waiting in lines! That’s something I never thought to do when I had a smartphone. The reason why I gave up on social media, except TH-cam ( for like music and like for school and such ) is because it wasn’t good for my mental health. Always comparing myself to other people, their Careers, their easy life. They have no problems. Education status, money, always getting the latest things… and i just feel like shit. Okay I’m not like hating on them or anything, but constantly being ( even when I ignore them) shown these lives and beauty standards is really hard. I basically hated myself. I realize I only feel like taking pictures of myself to post on IG, otherwise I wouldn't snap a thing. I've lately have been thinking of deleting everything as a whole and just live in books. i have not personally posted on social media since 2019 and for the most part stayed off of social media. About two years ago i was going through some things and wanted a distraction and downloaded tik tok and til the day i regret that decision. it has had me in an extreme chokehold for such a long time i reflect and ask myself what i’m doing but i continue to engage heavily. this was truly inspiration for me to try and stop being so tempted to click and scroll. majority of the time it causes me so much anxiety and somehow i’m extremely sad afterwards. it’s a warped reality and i’m really sick of it. i hope this reaches so many of us that need this reality check and pushes us towards a more simple lifestyle like how it used to be. you’ve definitely gained a new subscriber! your channel seems so real and full of healing and i’m all for it! i wish you and your channel much success!

I have been of social media for 3 weeks and it’s been the best thing ever. More time, more focus, more creativity. My next step is getting a flip phone. I have decided that the people who need to see my art will see it, universe willing. And it’s been nice to find ways to ground myself despite my norm of the hustle and bustle of the city. I’m 24 and have had IG since I was 14. I deleted the instagram app about a month ago and I’m so much happier. My boyfriend’s even noticed how much happier and less anxious I am now. I was trapped in that cycle of comparing my life to others (especially women) and feeling sad that I wasn’t yet married or have children. I’d also feel insecure when I would see my mother post a lot about my younger siblings and hardly anything about me. It was also the first thing I would go to in the morning, the thing I would think about when going out to new places or going out on dates. I would always think about what kind of pictures to take and what would look best for my feed. Now, I’m just taking photos for my own pleasure and making a physical photo album ^-^ I’m so happy my boyfriend encouraged me to delete instagram. It’s brought so much peace to my mind and heart. And it’s definitely a lot less pressure on our relationship with keeping things private (:

I have the same conversation with myself everyday! Just the thought of how much a phone can take away so much time that could be going to more important things!! It’s too distracting but addicting & I hate it 😫
I use my phone to literally “run away” from my problems or as a coping mechanism. Sometimes mental illness doesn’t have a specific look huh? Thank you for sharing this 🥰 LOVE YOU BEAUTIFUL!

I’ve been saying this too. I used to read a lot and the phone distracted me. I’ve read 4 books this year and working on my 5th and 6th. Not near what I used to read but I hadn’t read that much in at least a decade. It’s nice. I got off social media and now I’m backing away from astrology/readings. I wanna dive back into God and stay there. I got lost in tarot due to a bad breakup/heartbreak and looking for clearer answers that just left me even more heartbroken and confused. The internet is interesting but I don’t want my child becoming one of these phone zombies and that starts with me

I’m slowly getting there with my addiction to social media. I used to be on my phone for 10 - 12 hours a day on my phone 2-3 years ago. Now? I’m on social media for 1 hour a day MAX (minus TH-cam) and I feel so much more present. I severely suffered with disassociation and not feeling like my life is real and now that I’m not even on my phone that much I feel so free and grounded. thank you for making this video as a reminder to keep pushing on living life to its purpose!!!

I'm off Instagram for 3 years or more and I never had TikTok, Snapchat and many others, I couldn't be more proud of myself. But sometimes I still spend too much time on youtube which is the only social media I have (because I can't uninstall it) or just reading news or something on the phone so I'm recently really trying to think about everything I'm doing during the day and make sure it's meaningful and purposeful, not just productive.

I was born in 2000 and I agree, the 2000s were just a different vibe. I catch myself saying all the time that I feel as if I was born in the wrong decade, but the truth is that we must be aware enough to understand that we create our own realities. The social media platforms and devices are designed by people that are powerful and rich and I truly believe that it's all a form of social control. These devices are supposed to help us free up our time, but I agree with you, they are just making us lazy while messing with our emotions. I deleted social media for two months this year and it was the best I have ever felt. I recently decided that enough is enough and I will never slip back into those habits again so I just deleted everything. I absolutely loved your video! It's probably the first one to really open my eyes about the ramifications of social media. I will always come back to this video whenever I feel tempted to go back. Thank you

I think lately I’ve noticed that when I go on my phone, hell even watching TH-cam, I don’t even enjoy it! I used to. I used to go on my phone a lot but it would be enjoyable, maybe because my attention span was still a little bigger. Now scrolling just feels like chasing, and I never feel satisfied. I love a well crafted video essay, or a gaming video from a favorite TH-camr, etc. But like for me it’s definitely excessive. I have an app (That I pay monthly for) that can lock me out of apps at scheduled times, and I can set up a mode where I can’t turn it off. I need to keep using that, I do it for a few days but then I stop. I need to keep it going to really see change.
Anyway sorry for long post! But yeah. Social media isn’t even fun anymore. Might as well fill my brain with less things, and more quality things

I've been using a Light Phone for the last couple of months with the purpose of taking a break from my iPhone. I just switched over to using it full-time and I love it!! Not having a smartphone can definitely be inconvenient, but if you're willing to problem solve and make sacrifices, it can be so worth it & has helped me so much! People joke that it's harder to reach me now without an iPhone, but that's a big plus in my opinion... now the conversations I do have via phone are much more meaningful.

I’m so glad you’re calling it an addiction because that’s really what it feels like. It became physically and mentally hard to turn the phone off even when I know I’ve been sitting for hours and my eyes and head hurt. I’ve taken social media breaks here and there but I always end up sucked back in. Last night I reached my breaking point, I just feel like the life im living isn’t even a real life anymore because I’m so consumed by it every day and I just feel empty and unfulfilled. Today is day one of no social media and I already feel so much better. I never thought of the flip phone idea and you’re inspiring me! Also it’s amazing that you’re so young and doing all this. I grew up when the internet was just getting popular and MySpace was new. I love this video.
A flip phone is a bit extreme for me because I need to access maps, online banking, other instant payment apps and uber.
I am selling my iphone 13 pro and downgrading to an iphone 5. It’s not fun to use and it’s also conveniently small. Stays in my bag.
Trying to ween myself off youtube because although i generally watch pretty decent quality content: I am at the stage where I need to IMPLEMENT the tips instead of constantly being on my airpods 24/7.
The bonus is the iphone 5 battery is so not great so I have to be very present and selective about what I listen to.
With time, I will also need to learn to unglue mysef from my Kindle screen and just look up and enjoy the birds, sky, people watch etc.
Thank you for this great video!

I deactivated my Instagram 5 days ago. I did not dare to delete it completely. I deleted all of my social media besides TH-cam in 2019 before the lockdown during the pandemic. So many things changed in my life and I was stripped of friendships and relationships I really thought were pure. Getting off social media highlighted peoples intentions for me. I’ve been in an isolated place since then. I really see things for what they are now and how people will use you for what they perceive you to have. I have a video on my page listing the reasons why I wanted to get off etc. One huge reason was because I wanted my thoughts to be my own and to come from God instead of the media I was seeing on a daily basis. It was so freeing to get off and live a private life. Feburary 2023 I made a tiktok for business purposes and started posting on TH-cam again. I’m happy with my decision and don’t plan to share my personal life, photos, and details of my life with strangers ever again. There is a way to share while still being private and I think I’ve mastered that. I hope for the best for everyone just starting their journey 💕🙏🏾🫶🏾

As a 30 year old I resonate deeply. I basically have had social media in my life since I was in 6th grade (pretty much over half of my life 😣), but first… I grew up on flip phones! I miss those days when that was the only form of communication with your friends. And as the internet evolved there was MySpace ❤ MySpace was better than IG, and less stimulating. It actually gave you tools and creativity in regard to learning how to code to make & design your own profile, and coding for fonts! I used to be so good at it that I could’ve been a web designer with the codes I learned. But then there came Facebook & Instagram and everyone had no choice but to migrate to those apps & also upgrade to smartphones. Everything is so instantaneous.. I think the idea of a flip phone is amazing; my younger sister born in ‘98 got one a couple months back. You actually both have the same one lol. She too only uses her iPhone when at home but of course sets a boundary with it. Your video made me consider getting one even more. It’s been almost a month since I’ve posted on Instagram, so it feels good not to be seen. I was so caught up in who viewed my stories or liked my photos.. it really affected my mental health. I honestly feel more present since. I think getting a flip phone is the next step.. it’ll also allow me to use my iPhone as if it were a computer like back in the day… the only time we used social media was AT HOME! After school or on the weekend just staying in touch with friends through MySpace or AIM (AOL instant messenger) if we weren’t hanging out. Man, those were truly the days. Instant nostalgia of simpler and more intentional/mindful times. With that said I’m proud of you too. Here’s to being more present 🫶🏻

Wow I feel like I could’ve written this myself.
I haven’t been on IG since 2018. FB since 2011-12. I miss MySpace so much and designing!

I can relate to this. My approach is similar.
I have pulled away from the “close-social” parts of social media. any platforms where engaging socially with others is the main focus (FB, IG in particular) I have deactivated those accounts. But any media that I can exist in my own little world in I still have (like TH-cam, TikTok, Twitter, Pinterest) I’m not connected to any friends/family on any of these apps. So my engagement with others is para-social at most.
TikTok and TH-cam I’ll leave comments chatting with strangers but there’s no real pressure to develop and maintain actual relationships online. this is increased my desire for in person connections and I’m glad.
And with Pinterest and Twitter I’m literally friends with no one-I use one as online journal and the other as online moodboard. This has been fulfilling personally because it feels safe and protected.
. I’m glad you have found ways to log out and tap in at such an early age. You’re going to open yourself up to so many life fulfilling opportunities. It’s a rich experience, why spend it on cheap thrills?

You are so wise. I’m 44 - not that age means much, but I’m learning so much from you. It’s all resonating. Thank you for making this video.

    Long!
30m here and I guess the algorithm sent me here because we are on Similar paths… I grew up with dialup internet and vhs/VCR player and witnessed the the entire evolution to high speed internet and the ability to do everything from your fingertips. A little less than a year ago, I realized nothing really satisfied me anymore. I couldnt clinically say I was depressed but I knew something wasn’t right. I stumbled upon screentime in settings and seen my avg was something like 8hrs 40min per day and the breakdown of what I spent it on.. I wanted to cut back to about 2 hours per day haven’t gotten there yet but I’m now somewhere around 2h30 mins per day. Which is 6 hour per day.42 hours a week .. social media is a drug/ cult. 1. They hide the logout button, you often have to jump through hoops to log out now. 2. Once you do log out they send you even more alerts, usually in the form of emails trying to give you a recap of what you “missed” or they’ll create fake alerts or even now “memories” to get you to log back in… This person posted this… wanna react?.
    3. When you log out it seems friends only want to send you links to SM
    Phones:
it’s smart to switch to a flip phone as 1. It limits how much advertisers can try to sell to you. Just about every single email I recieve has a hyperlink to some sort of store… even the weather channel.
Phones no longer offer a true silent mode… the silent mode still vibrates for alerts which is still a distraction. I keep mines in do not disturb which is silent but sends all 1st calls to voicemail unless I set it up to do other wise.
When you get to the side of choosing to deal with the phone on your own terms you’ll realize the model is just like the game of tapping somebody on their opposite should to get them to look the other way except you kept falling for it.

Omg Muahrah!!! I just came across your content and I feel so grateful ahhh I LOVE this video. Such an inspiring tips here, definitely going to start incorporating similar habits to refine my relationship with social media :)) So much of what you're sharing here reminds me Superhuman meditations that I started using recently after a friend showed it to me. It's a really cool concept - multi tasking meditations helping you tap in to your ultimate self and manifest your future. Sooo applicable to leveling up your life and getting clear on how you want to live and feel. They even have a meditation to stop mindless scrolling on social media! Incredible habit stacking - can't help but share b/c I feel like you'd love it haha :)) it's been a game changer for me! So excited to explore all of your content x

I used a flip phone for like half a year. It was ok but definitely didn't magically fix all my problems. I found my self using more social media on my computer and doing other forms of procrastination. One of my main problems was that I still liked to listen to music and audiobooks on it and that was a huge pain.

Congrats! I have been off social media except TH-cam sins 2018 and it has been so liberating and refreshing. I had been feeling the pull to delete my instagram and when I finally set out to do it I remeber how anxious I felt. Like my heart was literally beating out of my chest because I was so scared to lose all of my followers and I had been building my IG page up since 2010 so it was my baby lol I knew I had to let it go because I hated feeling so attached to it. Im now in the mindset to let go of TH-cam aswell because it takes up way too much of my time smh

This is exactly what i needed to hear. I love this. I've been trying to have these kinds of dopamindetoxes many times, but it never works. You, however, make it sound so easy and motivating! Now I want to try again

I try to delete My social medias too, especially the ones where you scroll endlessly like tiktok and instagram. I deleted them since 2 month. I feel better. I kept TH-cam and twitter. TH-cam for long videos that -I- choose to watch, and Twitter for art. I will try now to not watch My phone when i wake up. :)
