Fantastic narration, thank you! You should have a TV show, seriously. We have a public tv station in the states called PBS, they regularly put British drama, britcoms, and European travel shows. I think your videos would suit them very well.
Thanks for bringing back a flood of dear memories! I remember visiting Arundel. I loved seeing the medieval castle, I loved walking around the town. I cherish the time I spent in England. It's truly a beautiful country.
There is a lovely swimming lido that as a child I used to float on my back looking a the ccastlelistening to the yachts rigging slapping around in the breeze in in the breeze. Lovely place, many happy memories
Hi there Richard thanks for showing part of the historic Arndal down in the County of Sussex Great selection of shops independently run fab to see. Beautiful stroll along the River Arab and we both loved our visit to the stunning Castke. A great share and thanks for the tour Beth and Simon 💚👍💚
Visited Arundel in the 90s with some friends from Emsworth. A lovely day out on the train and a nice walk in the town and up the hill to the Castle and Cathedral. It was was as you described. Still, I sometimes like all of the trappings of a ''tourist" destination including the brass rubbing and the antiques. Thanks for the video!
My goodness that brought back memories of being a ‘mod’ and going down the steep hill on the back of a Vespa (with no brakes!). Happy days, thank you x
It’s been years since I’ve been to Arundel - your video has inspired me to go back. Always fascinated by the parish church with one half being Anglican and the other half catholic!
Don't forget to visit Swanbourne Lake behind the Castle and maybe stop off at the Black Rabbit Pub and Restaurant on the bank of the river for refreshments
Lovely video Richard, brought back many childhood memories, as I used to spend my summer school holidays in Arundel staying on my uncles farm just on the outskirts of town, some fifty odd years ago. Hasn’t changed much in all that time, really hope to get back there one day soon.
Richard, you're a natural born You Tuber! I always find you engaging and very informative. I visited this gem of a place last summer and fell in love with it instantly. The castle is, of course, the star but the cathedral should not be missed; absolutely beautiful. Keep up the great work!
I've had a nice lunch there on the Arun river, just beyond the bridge where you started off. Had the smoked eel of which I was extremely reluctant to try. To my surprise it was very good! It was wonderful sitting there, by the river, swans swimming about.
I once got to go into Arundel Castle for free because my sister used to work there as a cleaner. We then got to go to a "staff only" section which was the basement.. it was really interesting. (we also got a free dinner :P)
@Rosida Andriyana I'm not lying. Although it was eight or nine years ago, I can still remember bits of it fairly well, such as the room we slept in and waking up in the morning.
i would like to thank Richard for his doco on Sussex , i lived in Worthing through the war , i was born in Shoreham in 1938 , my family was from Brighton where i later lived, I went to Western Australia in 1974 , i still live there. My first job was as a projectionist in the Odeon Worthing , a lovely 30s style restaurant and cinema wantonly demolished and turned into luxury flats for the rich who have destroyed most of the history of Worthing .
Wow!😍 Arundel was straight out of a storybook! With its charming town & Castle!!! Love!!!❤ You def could see they Saxon influence w/ all the German architecture style buildings.
I went to Arundel by boat from Littlehampton with my mother and uncle in 1965. It looks lovely - I must go back one day! I wonder if they still run the boat trips from Littlehampton
Hi Richard Have ever been to the Somerset- North Devon coast covering places such as Dunster (Old village and Castle through to right through to Ilfracombe and Lynton and Lynmouth David Chave
Im gradually working my way through your videos, I know this one was a while ago but I think this is only half the ruin, the rest is located behind the recently demolished old toilet block opposite on the other side of the road.
Wonderful Arundel, most certainly a jewel with which I'm very proud to be associated. Many of my ancestors were born, lived, worked and died there and a place I feel very at home in when I visit. Thank you Richard.
Ah yes, Arundel. But we didn't get to walk up the high street or along the lesser known path by the river, but we did pop over to the Black Rabbit after for a pint and some food. Thanks Richard.
Ah the draw of the Black Rabbit on a lazy summer lunchtime...and the park (Swanbourne Lake) en route...not to mention the wildfowl reserve...plenty to see and do...the RC Cathedral's not to be sniffed at either...beautiful stained glass... Dave
Love Arundel. Love the lake and wetland reserve. Kim's Bookshop is a nice way to spend some time. The annual tulip show in the castle is a wonder. Not to mention a number of places to get and English breakfast. :)
If I want to visit both Arundel and Chichester/Fishbourn Roman Villa, where should I base myself? I have two days to play with between going to Salisbury and Cantebury
I very much enjoyed your video. I visited Arundel once in 1972. Lovely historical town. My mum was born there.and met my father (a Canadian soldier) during WWII. They were married in the Cathederal. Have you ever considered using drone footage in your videos?
John Scott Thanks so much for watching and telling me of your connection with Arundel. How fascinating. Drone footage would be lovely. I need to save up!
I like the format of while you're filming you add the voice over with the facts about the place, I think that works really well ( hope I've explained that ok and you know what I mean )
I know exactly what you mean. I hope to do more of that type also. I have just shot one this morning that needs all the facts put over by voice, so I am editing that next!
Bit late commenting but would you recommend Arundel for those who don't have cars? I'm looking for somewhere to go that's easy with walking and public transport links in that general vicinity..
We will be traveling to Arundel from America in July. 12 glorious days we will spend there! Our son is going to a soccer camp at Seaford College. We can't wait and your video got us more excited!
Story I heard about Arundel Castle is that in the 19th century the local earl inherited it, and he didn't quite know what to do with himself having all this wealth handed to him. He grew long hair and a beard and wore poor clothes and wandered around like a hermit. One day he was in the local train station and a woman whistled at him to come and carry her bags for a penny, derisively remarking it was probably the only honest work he'd ever done. He agreed and took her bags for a penny, never revealing his identity.
It's a nice walk, and I've seen swans nesting along that path, but it can get very muddy. My sister, dad and I once walked into town via the river, but my sister was only wearing flip-flops, so we had to climb over the wall and go along the road.
Lovely video. I have been to the Castle but never walked around the town. I think I will visit soon. It will be a perfect destination for canal boat owners once the Wey and Arun Canal is once again, open.
I'd commend to any visitor the walk up Mill Road (between the Castle and the River) towards Offham...there's a beautiful parkland at Swanbourne Lake (get your walking legs on, or there's a nice cafe too!)...on the other side of the road there's the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre (birdlife galore), and further up near Offham is a wonderful riverside pub, the Black Rabbit...the lunches are to die for, and if the weather's fine you can dine out by the river and watch the swans go by... Back in town, the Cathedral's well worth a visit too...surprisingly lofty within and some lovely windows...in the town centre do wander a little...some of the shops are fascinating! It's a place I've always loved (does it show?).
#RichardVobes, all the ancient remains of the English heritage must be protected by the government. The history of the English culture must be protected.
Mark Howard Hello Richard. This comment on your Arundel expsode is about three years late, bur I just today discovered you and your video walks while exploring Google Earth. Aruldel has long fascinated me because my paternal forebears insisted that we are offshoots of the Dukes of Norfolk Howards of England. I can trrace my family in the U.S. only to the late 18th century, with no link ,yet to the English Howards. Aruldel castle might one day be mine if seven million people named Howard happen to die all at once. Little chance of that, so I entertain myself by studying English history as pertains to the Howard line. Your glimpses into history are helpful and well done. Some day I might even visit the UK and see some of these things for myself.
Anyone remember the Standard 10 with a steam engine poking out the bonnet?(in Maltravers Street,i think)that was parked for years.Don't know if it ever run.but we'd pass it on our Sunday drives with my parents, before the bypass was built.
Great video of Arundel. A very distant relative Sir John de Meriet Kt. (1328-1391), married Elizabeth fitz Alan (of Arundel) the widow of Sir Leonard Carew about 1370-73.
Oh yes - the ships came up from the river, packed with goodies from over seas. All gone now, like so many of our one time great rivers, empty of tall ships.
The author Mervyn Peake, while riding a train past Arundel was given the germ of inspiration for his Gormenghast Trilogy,on seeing the magnificent sight of the Castle and the Cathedral!! What a sight they are!!
Arundel is a great place, nice historic buildings, lovely architecture. Nice walk along the river down to the Black Rabbit pub, lovely spot in the summer. Not only that there is a fudge shop that does good locally made fudge!
Your wonderful lyrical programmes are doing a great service to the British countryside. Someone called this kind of response "Vaughan Williams @ co" which is gently humorous but very relevant !! Good luck. Warren
The Duke of Norfolk was building several cathedrals & ran out of money so Arundel was supposed to have a spire, 50 or so years ago I helped move the bones of St Phillip Howard into the new alter.
the spire was originally going to be similar to that of the Church of St Walburge, Preston, which is one of the tallest spires in the uk. it was the same architect. the base of the tower was still built.
Hi Richard, as a life long Arundel resident I have many happy memories of taking my children to see you preform for the Fringe, Thank you
Golly that was a long while a go. I loved the fringe! Thanks for watching.
Fantastic narration, thank you! You should have a TV show, seriously. We have a public tv station in the states called PBS, they regularly put British drama, britcoms, and European travel shows. I think your videos would suit them very well.

Great video! Love Arundel, beautiful town. I always think its cathedral looks like it belongs in France.
Live just down the road and love Arundel! Nice to hear the history of the castle, great video

Very nice town .. the castle is amazing 😀
the modern world is boring, your walks and talks are refreshing of spirit
So pleased you are enjoying them. Thanks for the comment.
My great grandmas lineage goes back to the Maltravers family. They were the Earls of Arundel. They trace to Edward III

Robert Reed Oh blimey. You didn't visit the high street! Golly I didn't realise.
There was a street faire and market just outside the main entrance to the castle that drew our attention that day

id say Arundel is the best RC church in England, i think the church of England should share its historic cathedrals more

I've been to Arundel lots of times, but never knew about the riverside walk.It would be great to find these places were Google can't go.
Yes, I found it by chance and figured a view across the river would look good.
It's a nice walk, and I've seen swans nesting along that path, but it can get very muddy. My sister, dad and I once walked into town via the river, but my sister was only wearing flip-flops, so we had to climb over the wall and go along the road.

Great video of Arundel. A very distant relative Sir John de Meriet Kt. (1328-1391), married Elizabeth fitz Alan (of Arundel) the widow of Sir Leonard Carew about 1370-73.

Very nice. Were the buildings across from the river walk originally warehouses for shipping?
Oh yes - the ships came up from the river, packed with goodies from over seas. All gone now, like so many of our one time great rivers, empty of tall ships.

I can't remember now.
I live there!
I’m also learning about the Anglo Saxons in History at school
Nice.
Amazing got married in Arundel x

Why not do a video of that other lovely town in West Sussex, Crawley?

Thanks so much Warren. Great appreciated. The countryside needs to be praised. It is our biggest asset.
Juggler and street entertainer? I think we need a history of Vobes series!
Ha ha - my deep past! :)
That war memorial has the names of four brothers (the Maxwell-Stuarts) ingraved on it. How the parents coped after that I cannot conceive.
It would have been difficult for sure.
The Duke of Norfolk was building several cathedrals & ran out of money so Arundel was supposed to have a spire, 50 or so years ago I helped move the bones of St Phillip Howard into the new alter.

Oh yes - very expensive in Arundel.
Very much worth it tho
