I wanted to put together a list of FAQ's for the XR18/MR18 to put these into one place, and link to longer videos if someone wants to know more on one of the questions. I narrowed it down to 5 that seemed to me to be the ones that pop up the most on Facebook and other forums. If there's interest, I might do a series of these over time... like "Five 'MORE' Frequently Asked Questions....". While 5 thru 2 could be debatable as to their rankings, I don't think there can be any doubt about the #1 question. Odbfs = bucket full, nice one. Here is another suggestion for a topic. Addictive drums has the ability to split its kit pieces into separate DAW tracks for external digital mixer control of each track volume, however what is the latency involved when using with an edrum kit, and how to lower it. FINALLY !!!!!!! A proper explanation ! Why didn't Behringer fix the labeling on the FX Section when they do their updates ? This can cause a lot of confusion when reading the interface .
Great suggestion! Probably the fly in the ointment for doing that for real, as far as multitracking goes, is I'd probably on the X32 where I could use the Live card for multitracking.

Alan, Once again a great video, But I agree you should also get an i-Pad as so many of us use the x-air edit software on it. It can get confusing to some novice operators of some of the slight differences where to find things and why they look different. Possibly a good subject for another video. 🎉 You do your videos so well that I have been sharing them with my AV club. Thanks for all your hard work.
It's beyond me why no one talks about a footswitch to switch effects on and off during a live gig. If anyone has just a device, I would be glad to hear about it.
My question for this setup is: Is there a way to have a tap tempo for delay set up on the main fader bank page instead of having to go back and to the delay effect itself in order to change the tempo?

Quick Question. When I mute a channel on bus1 let’s say, the channel gets muted across all buses as well as main LR. How do I make this behavior change to per-bus basis

Well, the first part is easy since you're no longer tethered to a board you can just move away from them... but that second question might be harder.... ;)
Hey My Solo function is not working using XAir edit(linux version) or Mixing station (Android). I always here l/R output from my Phones output. What am I missing?
On X-Air Edit, open IN/OUT window.... Open MAIN OUT tab... Make sure PHONES is set to MONITOR in the graph. It's probably been moved to Left-Right. Also, you can check SETUP.... MONITOR tab.... For default settings- Make sure monitor source is L-R AFL, with PFL selected for channel solo and bus solo. (Although I don't think anything here in SETUP/MONITOR will cause your problem... this is just getting the normal defaults back in place... Your problem is almost certainly the first thing I mentioned).
Hi Alan, quick question. In reference to FAQ #4, when I gray out the Main output of any bus, it also does it for the Main LR. Vice versa, is this normal?
If I'm following your question correctly, then yes it is normal. Usually, you'll only want a bus output assigned to the Main LR when it's being used as subgroup.
I was just fooling around with this too and had the same question. Maybe you figured it out by now, but notice when he is talking about graying out the LR button, he has the whole bus output selected (the fader/column set all the way to the right). If you don't have the whole bus selected, it grays out across all the outputs like what you're describing. So make sure you select the whole bus before checking the LR box.
Hey :) I'm going to be mixing my school's live concert and want to record it to cubase without the effects (reverb) going to the the DAW if I can avoid it...is there a way to do this at all? If not, would I be better off being a little more conservative with the effect sends etc to reduce problems when mastering the mix before publishing it? I believe I can record as I hear the main mix in live which is kinda cool! PS: AWESOME VIDEO TUTORIALS!!
I haven't used Cubase so I can't speak to how you get to where you want to go on it, but you can definitely do what you want to do. For one thing, you can just track all your channels individually, tapped after the input gain, and mixdown the tracks later (either 'in the box' or using the XR). Or, if you don't want to have to mixdown the tracks later but do want a stereo recording of the event(s), sans reverb, then (assuming you have one or two busses available) create a subgroup on each channel. Either mono or stereo (stereo takes 2 busses). Enable all your channels in the subgroup. In the master section make sure your subgroup is NOT assigned to the L-R. Then in the XR routing (In/Out) USB sends, just take an unneeded USB output (2 for mono) and assign them to this recording subgroup. Then make sure Cubase is 'listening' to this USB send(s) for the track(s). Since it's a subgroup, it will track exactly with what your channel faders are doing in the mix. It will be a clone of the house mix (sans any house EQ/comp/processing on your main L-R output). Technically, you could set the bus or busses as a POST FADER SEND(S) instead for the recording feed. In that case, if you set the send at unity on each channel it will make a clone of the house mix, BUT you could make secondary adjustments so that the starting baseline recording feed starts with some things different than the house if you want (like say you have little guitar in the PA in the room but need it more on the record feed. This is how you'd do it. This video talks about recording to Reaper from the XR18. So if you know Cubase well enough, you just apply the Reaper info to Cubase. If the iPad you’re controlling it with dies, does the mixer still function as it did before? Does it freeze the settings? Also, does it have any safety feature or could an audience member just randomly connect and mess with it to screw up our performance?
The settings will stay at whatever the last setting used was. You can password protect the unit, so someone would have to have your password... and the app... to connect and mess with you.
I am having a weird crosstalk issue with the X18 Air. The Bass guitar that is using a Bass Sans Amp direct into the mixer. For some reason the monitor output is some how bleeding into Two Note Torpedo M plus IR direct boxes of the guitars.
If you can save your scene and send it to me (email is on my main YT page "About" section) I can take a look at your routing and see if I see anything odd that you might've missed.
You should be able to use the USB routing to return a feed from a Re-amp box. I'm not sure what the amount of latency would be. The USB outs are always active so a guitar connected to channel 9 (for example) would flow via USB 9 to your DAW. You could change that in the routing if you wanted. So track 9 on the DAW could feed a software amp and route it back to say... channel 10... (via USB). Or just set up one of the XLR aux outs to be a direct out for the guitar channel, into a box, and the box back into another channel on the XR18. Assuming you don't need all 6 XLR aux outs for mons or other uses.
Can you make a video on how to separate? Effects from front of house and monitors I watched your video on how to add effects to your monitors, but it does not separate them from front of house and monitors. Every time Effects applied to front of house they come thou my monitor and vice versa
At 5 mins or so in the video about FX to monitors, it talks about setting up a dedicated reverb for monitors. To keep reverb in the mons and out of the house, that is what you need to do. And for that effect, on the FX return channel, you need to UNASSIGN the Effect return from the Main L-R. By default, it'll be assigned to the house. Unassigning it means there's no path for it to get to the mains. I have another video that talks about the XR18 FX Rack (an "Explainer" video) but I don't recall if it actually delves into monitors directly or not. But it does talk about the signal path and all of that, which dovetails with understanding how the reverb(s) feed various sources. @@AlanHamiltonAudio ... depending on drivers and OS and whether you're using ASIO. Windows has not ever for me seen anything else than 4 times stereo devices or a single 1-8 channel device. My Mac sees them all just fine. And of course the pro audio software can talk with them all at least with ASIO. It's just sad that I can't fully and equally use all the channels, because only the first 8 or so can be allocated for "stupid software". :(
Are there any other good external router out of this tp link 1750? Around 30€ budget? O tryed the 750travel but not satisfied enough, i want a solid cabled signal pc->router->mixer with ethernet And then we can connect via ipad during sound check
I'm not sure any dual-band router won't be much better than the 2.4G router that is built in. The two routers than I'm most familiar with are the TP Link and the Asus rt n56u. I didn't mention the Asus in this video as I don't think it's any longer available. It works great if you can find one. No problem recommending it. I'm hesitant to recommend anything I myself have not used... just in case I'd come up with one that looks fine on paper, but doesn't perform amongst all the ones that people have remarked have worked much better than the built-in wifi for them.
@@matteomantovani4459 No, I use the Asus or the TP-Link 1750. I stay far away from the built in wifi. About the only time I use the built in at all is if I'm using the XR to test a larger rig and the talent is carrying their own console... So rather than setting up my own large console just to test the rig when the rig first goes up, I'll use the XR18 to send some signals to the mains, subs, fills, etc... just to test things early in the morning (or the night before if it's a late setup). Once we hear signal, we can fly the PA out. And for that use, I'll just use the built in wifi and my phone. Then pack it away and leave the drive lines for system for the act to connect to when they arrive. Although, an external router IS there even for this testing. But for those type of scenarios, nobody much is around at that point, and it's not mission critical if I did get kicked off... So I don't worry about the built in wifi in that situation. And even though it's not mission critical and I'm not mixing, I DO need to hear the PA to test everything before the band arrives, so IF the built-in wifi did refuse to work, I still have the router with me and it only takes a couple of extra mins to get it out and connect it.
I have a question?🤔 I have everything set up and I followed the tutorial but although I can change the faders it doesn’t actually change the signal. So I can’t get the Signal to clip or get a signal to disappear.🤔🙏
Give me a little more information. What faders (channel, mains, bus, channel sends fader)? And what part of the video, or what is it you're trying to do?
OK so, I was using the XR 18 before as a Recording interface and now just recently started using it as a PA system. I noticed before when I used the faders to make a channel louder I would see the signal peak on my board at some point. I don’t see that anymore although I do hear it getting louder. Is that normal?🤔I hope that makes sense.
@@DLC-music It doesn't sound normal if the meters aren't tracking with the faders. It would be normal if they were tracking, but just not peaking... that would just mean you either have your gain control set properly, or are running it too low. But if you're following norms and setting the gain on each channel so that the input meter averages -18dFS (can peak higher) then you should be good there.
@@DLC-music The input meter is showing the gain on each channel... But, at least on the X-Air software, there are two meters when you select a channel. The left is PFL, and the right is AFL.
Just unassign that FX return from the Main L/R and it won't be in the house. It just has to return to an FX Return, it doesn't have to go to the house if you don't want it to. In fact, it only gets there if the Main L/R assignment button is engaged. Otherwise, it CAN'T get there. Many times people will share the same reverb with the mains and house, but not always and there are times you definitely don't want to for a dedicated monitor verb. There's another way to keep it from the mains, and that is by not bringing the FX Return fader up (and making sure the channel monitor sends on the FX Return channel are not POST-Fader). That way works fine too, but the other way means it can't go to the mains, even IF you accidentally bring that FX Return fader up. Sadly no... But... You can use the FX rack to insert a dual delay (or the dual pitch shifter that has a delay option) and run it full wet, no repeats, and insert it on a couple of outputs... but that's the only work around for running a couple of delayed outputs. Of course if you just need one or two delayed outputs, losing a slot in the FX rack might be worth it.
My professional opinion is that most of these questions would not be frequent if the software user interface had been thoughtfully designed. What amazes me is that considering the success of the hardware, the Behringer/MIDA X Air software has not been improved. Maybe the software development was a contracted-out job and Behringer does not have anyone who can fix it? It is an all-too-common scenario in music hardware. Look at the truly hideous Blackstar Insider software. The painful interface of the BOSS Micro BR-80, Yamaha synths, etc.

Do you mean a DI? th-cam.com/video/6iwW5_Ia9Uc/w-d-xo.html The quick answer is "No, you don't need a DI"... with the caveats being: "No, as long as you cable is not really long. If it's 20-25' long (or less) then it's fine. 30' long would be pushing it". As length increases, the ability of instrument cable to pick up noise increases. So, assuming your XR18 is at the stage, and not out at FOH, and a cable of those lengths work, you should be good on that end of things. ...Unless... The XR18 and yourself onstage puts your bass cable run between the bass and the XR18 into a place that it's a trip hazard or that your movement might yank against the connector in the XR18... Either situation then causing it to become disconnected or (worse) breaking the input jack of the XR18.
@@aaronnanatweneboah785 What do you mean by a combo? Combo amp? Comp (compressor)? I guess I'm confused by the term you're using... You should be able to connect the bass directly to the input without anything (except an instrument cable), so that might answer your question anyway.
No. There are 6 MONO outputs and 2 stereo outputs. So the most stereo monitor outs you can have are 3 stereo monitor outputs (or if you're using the console as a dedicated monitor console then you can also use the main L-R as another monitor mix). ...And if using mono... 6 is the max (unless you use the main L-R for a mix IF you're not using the console for your FOH mix). Using the P16 you can expand on that though...

I'm so busy these days, compared to 2020, that I probably wouldn't be. My schedule is not very consistent these days with shows, equip prep, truck packs, maintenance, etc...
I think I would unless you're really comfortable on many different digital mixers and don't think you'll have many questions. The XR18/MR18 user base is pretty large, and plus many answers are also the same for the X32/M32's so that increases the chances of finding help. But the Soundcraft is good as well, but I don't think you'll find the same userbase out there.
A question that I haven't seen asked, and thus not answered... How many FoH FX racks have you seen that have stereo main EQ as opposed to dual mono? For me it's only the cheapest of cheap use stereo. So why does the XR18 only have stereo? Or Am I mistaken to think that in a vastly asymmetrical room, you need dual mono FoH EQ?
The majority of the time, for a stereo rig, you're going to want stereo EQ. But, yes, you could be in an oddball shaped room and want different EQ on one side or the other. The X32 allows you to do this with a dual mono GEQ option. But the XR18 doesn't... but there is a workaround IF that situation presents itself... You can change one of the aux outs to be a main out (via routing)... and the EQ on it will be mono.
@@AlanHamiltonAudio Aha, don't know why I didn't see that, must be losing it. Kinda dirty, but it will do. The room has multi paned windows one side and an alcove bar the other. I am having a very slow conversation with Behringer over this. Anyway, thanks for the tip.
Is it just a mix problem or is he/she changing it so much they threaten to clip the channel? If they change it so much they clip or threaten to clip the channel, you have to just run it extra cool to allow headroom for when they turn up. A compressor won't help with preamp issues since it's after the preamp. A compressor CAN help to tame level changes that impact the mix. Maybe set it 2:1-4:1 with barely a flicker of gain reduction via the threshold as you start out. Then as they turn up, they will effectively be into the threshold more and be compressed more. If they turn up a lot, then you might as well start at 4:1 and just a flicker of GR at normal settings to start off. For every 4dB they turn up, once they cross the threshold, the increase in the house will only be 1dB. You still might need to reduce the channel fader at a certain point (and maybe mons depending on your tap point), but having the comp keeping them to only an increase of 1dB for every 4dB they turn up will help keep them from exploding out front. Back to the gain... I don't recommend chasing gain as long as they can stay within a window... BUT... If they really push it and slam their level, not just play more dynamically but really turn up a bunch... then reducing the gain back to your normal level with adjust the mix everywhere back to what it was when things started. Which might be great for a stream mix. For the house, it still might not be enough reduction because stage volume itself will be filling the room more. For most of the monitors, they might be glad you reduced the gain and brought the levels back to where things started... But if the musician him or herself turned up while actually being in their own mon mix, then they probably LIKE the increase in level. If you turn the gain down and don't compensate on their mon mix, they'll probably just turn up more at some point.
@@AlanHamiltonAudio Thanks for suggestions. This is sound advice ;) This musician is playing a keyboard and utilizing the main volume knob on the piano to increase his monitor presence. He also has a tablet available with Mixing Station where he can change his personal Bus mix, but i think it's instinct to reach for the volume knob. I watched during practice with the band and while he turns himself up, the other members reach for their own busses and turn him down. No doubt this is an experience issue, just curious how those in the biz deal with such problems. I have a compressor for emergencies to prevent clipping in the mix as you've suggested, but i don't think i can do anything before that in the staging. Am i wrong in thinking the volume knob is sacred and should not be touched post sound check?
@@mikedehaan81 I usually try and get the keyboard player to give me full volume, unless they are uber-experienced. Sometimes they have multiple boards and are layering their sounds so adjusting the levels to balance the layering is part of their sound. But the ones doing this are usually experienced enough to do it right. Usually, with the kez going into their own mixer that is then giving me a single stereo feed from there. If the player is inexperienced, and using just one keyboard, probably best to get them to give you the full key level so they can only turn it down, not up. At least the keyboard itself and what they are sending the house. If they have songs where the patch levels vary too much, sometimes it helps to take notes during the course of the show and just make sure the keyboard player is aware their lead patch in XYZ is too loud, and his piano on ABC is too quiet... and the intro to AAA is too loud, but the rest of the song too quiet, etc... From experience, it always SEEMS like you'll remember the songs to tell them, and then by the end of the night, there are so many you wished you'd written them down with some notes. In cases like that, they might be adjusting their mons, or living with things thinking they are OK for you, but would be happy to change to what you need... if they knew you needed it.
One thing to point out with FAQ #5 (reverb in monitors) is that, if you send a reverb to a monitor (aux) bus, the artist will hear not just their channel's reverb but the combined reverb of *all* of the channels sent to that monitor (aux) bus :-)
Yes, definitely. In the longer version video that I linked to, I described that scenario and even demonstrated the monitor/reverb bleed... and discussed how to avoid it by dedicating FX to musicians/mixes... But also, especially on the XR18/MR18, the limited FX slots makes dedicating too many verbs/FX for musicians/mixes an issue pretty quickly if some of the band can't compromise.
Because they don't include a balance control for wet/dry. So it's 100% wet you insert it. Unless you want 100% reverb (or delay) and no dry signal, then inserting it won't work.
They do this on the X/M32 as well... I'm going to assume it's because of the number of people that don't understand this control and misuse it in analog world. I can't count the service calls I used to make back in the day and see a bus effect with the mix control NOT 100% wet like it should be for that setup. So, to eliminate that potential issue, and the issues it creates (turning up reverb turns up the dry signal too... theoretically even latency might rear its head... definitely feedback is a potential issue). So Behringer just removed the control and took away the potential of operator error of misapplying wet/dry control of the effect in a bus.

I'm just the opposite, I'd probably rather have it on. I'm usually not setting individual monitor bus sends different on each channel. And the global setting only affects 1 bus at a time per channel. So it's just global as far as bus 1 on each channel. It won't change bus 2 unless you also change bus 2... then of course... all bus 2's will change to that new setting. But, your point is good because people should be aware of the global setting and make sure they have it set to what is best for their workflow and so they remember to change it when they need to do something differently than their normal workflow/baseline type settings. In my case, if I'd happen to want to set some trax to be post-fader on the monitors, so I could fade out monitors when I fade out house, I'd definitely need to remember I normally have the global setting ON. That way I could remember to shut it OFF before I make that one-off change that I just want on one channel.

It's beyond me why no one talks about a footswitch to switch effects on and off during a live gig. If anyone has just a device, I would be glad to hear about it.
A MIDI footswitch that has programmable switches and is able to send control commands, not just program changes, would do it.

Quick Question. When I mute a channel on bus1 let’s say, the channel gets muted across all buses as well as main LR. How do I make this behavior change to per-bus basis

Hey My Solo function is not working using XAir edit(linux version) or Mixing station (Android). I always here l/R output from my Phones output. What am I missing?
On X-Air Edit, open IN/OUT window.... Open MAIN OUT tab... Make sure PHONES is set to MONITOR in the graph. It's probably been moved to Left-Right.
Also, you can check SETUP.... MONITOR tab.... For default settings- Make sure monitor source is L-R AFL, with PFL selected for channel solo and bus solo. (Although I don't think anything here in SETUP/MONITOR will cause your problem... this is just getting the normal defaults back in place... Your problem is almost certainly the first thing I mentioned).

Hi Alan, quick question. In reference to FAQ #4, when I gray out the Main output of any bus, it also does it for the Main LR. Vice versa, is this normal?
If I'm following your question correctly, then yes it is normal.
Usually, you'll only want a bus output assigned to the Main LR when it's being used as subgroup.
I was just fooling around with this too and had the same question. Maybe you figured it out by now, but notice when he is talking about graying out the LR button, he has the whole bus output selected (the fader/column set all the way to the right). If you don't have the whole bus selected, it grays out across all the outputs like what you're describing. So make sure you select the whole bus before checking the LR box.

Hey :) I'm going to be mixing my school's live concert and want to record it to cubase without the effects (reverb) going to the the DAW if I can avoid it...is there a way to do this at all?
If not, would I be better off being a little more conservative with the effect sends etc to reduce problems when mastering the mix before publishing it?

I haven't used Cubase so I can't speak to how you get to where you want to go on it, but you can definitely do what you want to do. For one thing, you can just track all your channels individually, tapped after the input gain, and mixdown the tracks later (either 'in the box' or using the XR).
Or, if you don't want to have to mixdown the tracks later but do want a stereo recording of the event(s), sans reverb, then (assuming you have one or two busses available) create a subgroup on each channel. Either mono or stereo (stereo takes 2 busses). Enable all your channels in the subgroup.
In the master section make sure your subgroup is NOT assigned to the L-R.
Then in the XR routing (In/Out) USB sends, just take an unneeded USB output (2 for mono) and assign them to this recording subgroup.
Then make sure Cubase is 'listening' to this USB send(s) for the track(s).
Since it's a subgroup, it will track exactly with what your channel faders are doing in the mix. It will be a clone of the house mix (sans any house EQ/comp/processing on your main L-R output).
Technically, you could set the bus or busses as a POST FADER SEND(S) instead for the recording feed. In that case, if you set the send at unity on each channel it will make a clone of the house mix, BUT you could make secondary adjustments so that the starting baseline recording feed starts with some things different than the house if you want (like say you have little guitar in the PA in the room but need it more on the record feed. This is how you'd do it.
This video talks about recording to Reaper from the XR18. So if you know Cubase well enough, you just apply the Reaper info to Cubase. The XR18 will be the same regardless of the DAW.

If the iPad you’re controlling it with dies, does the mixer still function as it did before? Does it freeze the settings?
Also, does it have any safety feature or could an audience member just randomly connect and mess with it to screw up our performance?
The settings will stay at whatever the last setting used was. You can password protect the unit, so someone would have to have your password... and the app... to connect and mess with you.

I am having a weird crosstalk issue with the X18 Air. The Bass guitar that is using a Bass Sans Amp direct into the mixer. For some reason the monitor output is some how bleeding into Two Note Torpedo M plus IR direct boxes of the guitars.
If you can save your scene and send it to me (email is on my main YT page "About" section) I can take a look at your routing and see if I see anything odd that you might've missed.

Is it possible to use the XR18 also as a ReAMP-Box? Or is there a option to change the Lini in 17/18 to a Line out, to connect them to a ReAMP box?
You should be able to use the USB routing to return a feed from a Re-amp box. I'm not sure what the amount of latency would be. The USB outs are always active so a guitar connected to channel 9 (for example) would flow via USB 9 to your DAW. You could change that in the routing if you wanted. So track 9 on the DAW could feed a software amp and route it back to say... channel 10... (via USB).
Or just set up one of the XLR aux outs to be a direct out for the guitar channel, into a box, and the box back into another channel on the XR18. Assuming you don't need all 6 XLR aux outs for mons or other uses.
Can you make a video on how to separate? Effects from front of house and monitors I watched your video on how to add effects to your monitors, but it does not separate them from front of house and monitors. Every time Effects applied to front of house they come thou my monitor and vice versa
At 5 mins or so in the video about FX to monitors, it talks about setting up a dedicated reverb for monitors. To keep reverb in the mons and out of the house, that is what you need to do. And for that effect, on the FX return channel, you need to UNASSIGN the Effect return from the Main L-R. By default, it'll be assigned to the house. Unassigning it means there's no path for it to get to the mains.
I have another video that talks about the XR18 FX Rack (an "Explainer" video) but I don't recall if it actually delves into monitors directly or not. But it does talk about the signal path and all of that, which dovetails with understanding how the reverb(s) feed various sources. Which might help you better see how to keep it from getting into the mains, or why and how a common reverb does get to the mains. Here is that link:

@@AlanHamiltonAudio ... depending on drivers and OS and whether you're using ASIO. Windows has not ever for me seen anything else than 4 times stereo devices or a single 1-8 channel device. My Mac sees them all just fine. And of course the pro audio software can talk with them all at least with ASIO. It's just sad that I can't fully and equally use all the channels, because only the first 8 or so can be allocated for "stupid software". :(

I'm not sure any dual-band router won't be much better than the 2.4G router that is built in.
The two routers than I'm most familiar with are the TP Link and the Asus rt n56u. I didn't mention the Asus in this video as I don't think it's any longer available. It works great if you can find one. No problem recommending it.
I'm hesitant to recommend anything I myself have not used... just in case I'd come up with one that looks fine on paper, but doesn't perform amongst all the ones that people have remarked have worked much better than the built-in wifi for them.

@@matteomantovani4459 No, I use the Asus or the TP-Link 1750. I stay far away from the built in wifi. About the only time I use the built in at all is if I'm using the XR to test a larger rig and the talent is carrying their own console... So rather than setting up my own large console just to test the rig when the rig first goes up, I'll use the XR18 to send some signals to the mains, subs, fills, etc... just to test things early in the morning (or the night before if it's a late setup). Once we hear signal, we can fly the PA out.
And for that use, I'll just use the built in wifi and my phone. Then pack it away and leave the drive lines for system for the act to connect to when they arrive. Although, an external router IS there even for this testing. But for those type of scenarios, nobody much is around at that point, and it's not mission critical if I did get kicked off... So I don't worry about the built in wifi in that situation.
And even though it's not mission critical and I'm not mixing, I DO need to hear the PA to test everything before the band arrives, so IF the built-in wifi did refuse to work, I still have the router with me and it only takes a couple of extra mins to get it out and connect it.

Give me a little more information. What faders (channel, mains, bus, channel sends fader)? And what part of the video, or what is it you're trying to do?
OK so, I was using the XR 18 before as a Recording interface and now just recently started using it as a PA system. I noticed before when I used the faders to make a channel louder I would see the signal peak on my board at some point. I don’t see that anymore although I do hear it getting louder. Is that normal?🤔I hope that makes sense.

@@DLC-music It doesn't sound normal if the meters aren't tracking with the faders. It would be normal if they were tracking, but just not peaking... that would just mean you either have your gain control set properly, or are running it too low. But if you're following norms and setting the gain on each channel so that the input meter averages -18dFS (can peak higher) then you should be good there.
@@DLC-music The input meter is showing the gain on each channel... But, at least on the X-Air software, there are two meters when you select a channel. The left is PFL, and the right is AFL.
i still dont inderstand why fx needs to be in main before it is available in monitor sends, what if i dont want reverb in the mains?
Just unassign that FX return from the Main L/R and it won't be in the house. It just has to return to an FX Return, it doesn't have to go to the house if you don't want it to. In fact, it only gets there if the Main L/R assignment button is engaged. Otherwise, it CAN'T get there. Many times people will share the same reverb with the mains and house, but not always and there are times you definitely don't want to for a dedicated monitor verb.
There's another way to keep it from the mains, and that is by not bringing the FX Return fader up (and making sure the channel monitor sends on the FX Return channel are not POST-Fader). That way works fine too, but the other way means it can't go to the mains, even IF you accidentally bring that FX Return fader up.

Sadly no... But... You can use the FX rack to insert a dual delay (or the dual pitch shifter that has a delay option) and run it full wet, no repeats, and insert it on a couple of outputs... but that's the only work around for running a couple of delayed outputs.
Of course if you just need one or two delayed outputs, losing a slot in the FX rack might be worth it.

My professional opinion is that most of these questions would not be frequent if the software user interface had been thoughtfully designed. What amazes me is that considering the success of the hardware, the Behringer/MIDA X Air software has not been improved. Maybe the software development was a contracted-out job and Behringer does not have anyone who can fix it? It is an all-too-common scenario in music hardware. Look at the truly hideous Blackstar Insider software. The painful interface of the BOSS Micro BR-80, Yamaha synths, etc.
I'm not sure if you have seen my video about the built in FX Rack but it's certainly a case where it's more confusing than it needs to be due to the GUI and some curious choices made there in wording and implementing how you do some things.

The quick answer is "No, you don't need a DI"... with the caveats being: "No, as long as you cable is not really long. If it's 20-25' long (or less) then it's fine. 30' long would be pushing it". As length increases, the ability of instrument cable to pick up noise increases. So, assuming your XR18 is at the stage, and not out at FOH, and a cable of those lengths work, you should be good on that end of things.
...Unless... The XR18 and yourself onstage puts your bass cable run between the bass and the XR18 into a place that it's a trip hazard or that your movement might yank against the connector in the XR18... Either situation then causing it to become disconnected or (worse) breaking the input jack of the XR18.

No. There are 6 MONO outputs and 2 stereo outputs. So the most stereo monitor outs you can have are 3 stereo monitor outputs (or if you're using the console as a dedicated monitor console then you can also use the main L-R as another monitor mix).
...And if using mono... 6 is the max (unless you use the main L-R for a mix IF you're not using the console for your FOH mix).
Using the P16 you can expand on that though...

I think I would unless you're really comfortable on many different digital mixers and don't think you'll have many questions. The XR18/MR18 user base is pretty large, and plus many answers are also the same for the X32/M32's so that increases the chances of finding help.
But the Soundcraft is good as well, but I don't think you'll find the same userbase out there.
A question that I haven't seen asked, and thus not answered...
How many FoH FX racks have you seen that have stereo main EQ as opposed to dual mono? For me it's only the cheapest of cheap use stereo.
So why does the XR18 only have stereo?

The majority of the time, for a stereo rig, you're going to want stereo EQ. But, yes, you could be in an oddball shaped room and want different EQ on one side or the other. The X32 allows you to do this with a dual mono GEQ option. But the XR18 doesn't... but there is a workaround IF that situation presents itself... You can change one of the aux outs to be a main out (via routing)... and the EQ on it will be mono.

How do I deal with a musician who keeps changing the volume on his instrument?
Is it just a mix problem or is he/she changing it so much they threaten to clip the channel?
If they change it so much they clip or threaten to clip the channel, you have to just run it extra cool to allow headroom for when they turn up.
A compressor won't help with preamp issues since it's after the preamp.
A compressor CAN help to tame level changes that impact the mix.
Maybe set it 2:1-4:1 with barely a flicker of gain reduction via the threshold as you start out. Then as they turn up, they will effectively be into the threshold more and be compressed more. If they turn up a lot, then you might as well start at 4:1 and just a flicker of GR at normal settings to start off. For every 4dB they turn up, once they cross the threshold, the increase in the house will only be 1dB.
You still might need to reduce the channel fader at a certain point (and maybe mons depending on your tap point), but having the comp keeping them to only an increase of 1dB for every 4dB they turn up will help keep them from exploding out front.
Back to the gain... I don't recommend chasing gain as long as they can stay within a window... BUT... If they really push it and slam their level, not just play more dynamically but really turn up a bunch... then reducing the gain back to your normal level with adjust the mix everywhere back to what it was when things started. Which might be great for a stream mix. For the house, it still might not be enough reduction because stage volume itself will be filling the room more.
For most of the monitors, they might be glad you reduced the gain and brought the levels back to where things started... But if the musician him or herself turned up while actually being in their own mon mix, then they probably LIKE the increase in level. If you turn the gain down and don't compensate on their mon mix, they'll probably just turn up more at some point.

This musician is playing a keyboard and utilizing the main volume knob on the piano to increase his monitor presence. He also has a tablet available with Mixing Station where he can change his personal Bus mix, but i think it's instinct to reach for the volume knob. I watched during practice with the band and while he turns himself up, the other members reach for their own busses and turn him down.
No doubt this is an experience issue, just curious how those in the biz deal with such problems. I have a compressor for emergencies to prevent clipping in the mix as you've suggested, but i don't think i can do anything before that in the staging.
Am i wrong in thinking the volume knob is sacred and should not be touched post sound check?
@@mikedehaan81 I usually try and get the keyboard player to give me full volume, unless they are uber-experienced. Sometimes they have multiple boards and are layering their sounds so adjusting the levels to balance the layering is part of their sound. But the ones doing this are usually experienced enough to do it right. Usually, with the kez going into their own mixer that is then giving me a single stereo feed from there.
If the player is inexperienced, and using just one keyboard, probably best to get them to give you the full key level so they can only turn it down, not up. At least the keyboard itself and what they are sending the house.
If they have songs where the patch levels vary too much, sometimes it helps to take notes during the course of the show and just make sure the keyboard player is aware their lead patch in XYZ is too loud, and his piano on ABC is too quiet... and the intro to AAA is too loud, but the rest of the song too quiet, etc...
From experience, it always SEEMS like you'll remember the songs to tell them, and then by the end of the night, there are so many you wished you'd written them down with some notes.
In cases like that, they might be adjusting their mons, or living with things thinking they are OK for you, but would be happy to change to what you need... if they knew you needed it.

One thing to point out with FAQ #5 (reverb in monitors) is that, if you send a reverb to a monitor (aux) bus, the artist will hear not just their channel's reverb but the combined reverb of *all* of the channels sent to that monitor (aux) bus :-)

Yes, definitely. In the longer version video that I linked to, I described that scenario and even demonstrated the monitor/reverb bleed... and discussed how to avoid it by dedicating FX to musicians/mixes... But also, especially on the XR18/MR18, the limited FX slots makes dedicating too many verbs/FX for musicians/mixes an issue pretty quickly if some of the band can't compromise.

Why not?
Because they don't include a balance control for wet/dry. So it's 100% wet you insert it. Unless you want 100% reverb (or delay) and no dry signal, then inserting it won't work.
They do this on the X/M32 as well... I'm going to assume it's because of the number of people that don't understand this control and misuse it in analog world. I can't count the service calls I used to make back in the day and see a bus effect with the mix control NOT 100% wet like it should be for that setup.
So, to eliminate that potential issue, and the issues it creates (turning up reverb turns up the dry signal too... theoretically even latency might rear its head... definitely feedback is a potential issue). So Behringer just removed the control and took away the potential of operator error of misapplying wet/dry control of the effect in a bus.

I'm just the opposite, I'd probably rather have it on. I'm usually not setting individual monitor bus sends different on each channel. And the global setting only affects 1 bus at a time per channel. So it's just global as far as bus 1 on each channel. It won't change bus 2 unless you also change bus 2... then of course... all bus 2's will change to that new setting.
But, your point is good because people should be aware of the global setting and make sure they have it set to what is best for their workflow and so they remember to change it when they need to do something differently than their normal workflow/baseline type settings.
In my case, if I'd happen to want to set some trax to be post-fader on the monitors, so I could fade out monitors when I fade out house, I'd definitely need to remember I normally have the global setting ON. That way I could remember to shut it OFF before I make that one-off change that I just want on one channel.
