I hate, HATE, HATE the hard plastic legs. The first time I experienced them was when my kiddo opened a Barbie Fashonista with a realistic shape. She was SO excited for that doll.. But those legs were so disappointing. I was like, "MATTEL, WHAT IS THIS?"
I love a good Barbie roast! (Not the Soundgarden kind :D) All of the mermaids pale in comparison to for example a 90's Barbie that I own called Jewel Hair Mermaid. Tons of features and actual several textured fabrics! And a removable tail so she could walk! It wasn't even a special edition but the standard.
I honestly prefer the Barbie mermaids with just the tail, no legs underneath For me they are authentic mermaids 90s mermaids were beautiful but they were just normal Barbies with special hair DRESSED up as mermaids (and some of their tails didn't look like fish to me) The 2002 Mermaid Fantasy are the best because they had a tail that really looked like a fish and that really moved by squeezing the hips. I can't wait for Mattel to make a swimming mermaid Barbie
I was gifted that doll on Christmas, I absolutely adored it!!! Gosh as soon as I read her name, I looked it up to check if it was her and so many memories came flooding back, I almost got tears in my eyes from the nostalgia, the stars in her hair, the sparkles, the crown, the ring, the star earrings!!!I know it’s been 9 months since you wrote the comment, but thank you!
Please do a Bratz one! We are intrigueeed!! Honestly we don’t know why they decided to do the dreamtopia line, all the dolls are just tacky, colors super exposed, weird conmbinations… And maybe the bob mackie barbie was based on the star of bethlehem??
My daughter has few terrible barbies given to her over a few Christmas’s. I believe they could all be from the same line (dream topia) but she has a moulded fairy with flimsy plastic/cardboard wings (I hate those wings so much), the mermaid with the moulded body and tail and she has a bubble mermaid WITH MOULDED BODY, the bubble blower tail was so flimsy it bent and split into places and there’s something about not being able to dress these dolls that makes me sad because I see my daughters frustration trying to put Barbie clothes on these dolls and getting them stuck. The mermaids and fairy could have been better if the tail and wings were part of the outfit you could take off.
One of the main reasons I loved Barbies so much was all the clothes, dressing them up and creating new outfits! I had the Christmas Barbie from 90/91 or 92, the one in the green velvet dress with the red, green and clear gems sown onto the bodice, it it was so luxurious! Even when I was nannying (2008-2012), the girls ( aged 6 and 3 when I started) had some pretty good Barbies ( they may have had the knee bend still) and some decent fashions! Not sure when it all went completely downhill.
I transplanted the American Idol doll head on a normal 00’s belly button body , and she is quite pretty IMO. That body was just gross. You know what dolls I hated? Those Cali Girl era dolls with the huge flat feet and big balloon head. Those started the Barbie debacle. From then on playline Barbie had that huge swollen head for a long time.
The worst Barbie Holidays were 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2020, Honestly Barbie had a better quality in the past years, the modern Barbies are the worst with a terrible quality unfortunately.
Holiday 2020 was horrible in my opinion. That cheap gold material for her dress was terrible. She was wearing a plastic belt. On a holiday Barbie. From what I’ve seen this years holiday Barbie looks just as bad.
The past Barbie Holidays didn't have plastic accessories on them, some of them used to wear real accessories with beautiful gowns with a better quality, sadly they won't bring back that good quality that the past Barbie Holidays used to have.
“The skirt is cheap; the material’s cheap; the hair is cheap. Everything’s awful. So. . there you go!” For the first time in my life, I want a custom ringtone.
I know it's not a doll, but I've always had a love-hate relationship with the dresses that came with the World fashion magazines. You either got a beautiful piece of clothing or something either lazily designed or really bad quality. I know, it from a magazine but one of my all time favourite barbie dresses came from that magazine collection. It was a purple dress with a third layered skirt and 3d flowers on the chest.
Ouuu! New Video! I love these types of videos. I hope Mattel sees these and learns from their earlier Mistakes. I do like the Barbie Extra Line, it's bringing back Barbie's earlier quality.
Tbh I HATE the painted on tops a lot of Barbie dolls have. I always hated them as a kid, too, because it limits your creativity when you're trying to play with those dolls. I don't understand why Mattel keeps doing it - it's not like the fabric they use is particularly expensive or anything.
My first RH was Violet too, and I felt the same way. I was especially in awe of the nice hair. I still prefer Barbie proportions, but RH is better quality than Barbie Extra (the same price), for sure.
I feel like what a lot of these dolls have in common is lack of versatility. Children play with dolls in so many different ways , so why make a doll that can only be one thing ?? Like the colour reveal dolls.
I'm 50 and when I was young all Barbie's were articulated. Now sadly children and collectors have nothing to look forward to except at best hinged legs ( unrealistic) or cheap nasty designs of rigid plastic. So to toy companies lift your game, maybe even if people need to pay more for quality perhaps they will, it's better than buying the complete rubbish that's out there at the moment.
I'm so glad you included the American Idol barbie. I acquired the Tori one in a lot recently and was totally dumbfounded as to what it was... I couldn't believe mattel would have made this contorted stretched out monstrosity! WTF mattel?!
@@amym2535 yes, I agree, the face is really pretty and nice hair, thought about re-bodying but sold her cheap to someone on ebay who wanted that freaky body.
The American Idol dolls were supposed to have the Everflex bodies that Dance N Flex and the 2003 Cheerleader dolls have but then used the weird bodies. What’s even stranger is how the entire arm and legs are fully flexible.
I despise molded on/painted on clothing. Mostly because it's hard to hide under some clothing. If they must do it I wish they would do underwear colors.
Remind Mattel that these are supposed to be fashion dolls. Plastic molded on clothes is a no no for fashion dolls. And the fashions need improvement, too.
"She looks like Slenderman" 🤣 I think American Idol doll had a rubber body so you could bend her any old way. Kinda reminds me of the Gumby dolls and their weird bodies. One of my friends and I collected Barbies right up until they stopped using the click and snap knees and went for the solid plastic legs. Hated it, still don't like it, and I'm sick of begging Mattel to at least use the articulated bodies. Not even MTM, just more than 5 points! I dislike, strongly, the Model Muse bodies. Poor girl looks like she never eats and has a back injury.
I feel that. I absolutely HATE the Model Muse body. What's even more insulting is the standard Barbies don't even have swivel head action anymore. They have a 1" spike so the head won't come off, but it only turns from side to side. I rebodied a couple and I was like WTF
When I was a kid, despite loving my 90s dolls, I was very aware that their were lower quality than my mom’s 60s dolls (who I was allowed to play with occassionally, under supervision.) Those 60s dolls had lifelike hair and so many tiny accessories, and their clothes were so intricate, like real clothes in miniature. My dolls were all polyester and velcro, while my mom’s dolls had zippers, lining, real pockets, mixed materials, even teeny tiny clothes tags. It’s sad to see that things have fallen so much further that my dolls are now a high point.
I had an American Idol doll from an eBay haul a while back and iirc they had such bad articulation, I think it was only the arms that moved and the legs were unmovable. I took the head off to customize and threw the body where it belonged. The skip.
Thank you for the video ! Its a shame how barbie quality is not the same anymore , principally for people who wants to start collecting , would you do a video about your favorite Barbie dolls of all time? And a video about your least favorites Bratz dolls would be good as well , again , thank you for your videos ! I really love them💗
i am actually so annoyed at what mattel has done to barbie. like, what is their excuse? Cheap crappy hair, painted on and molded clothes - those are literally the two things kids like the most about the dolls just taken away. But the thing that i think really really shows how pathetically cheap they are is the whole not extending the pattern all the way to the back of the clothes. Seriously, just HOW cheap can you get, i just can't.... i'm so annoyed lol And to end this on a positive note - love your channel!
After so many years it's nice to know where that red holiday dress came from. I got that red dress in a thrift store grab bag of barbie clothing and I used it to dress a Draculara doll I also found at a thrift store. The combination isn't half bad and after taking the underskirt off of the dress, it gives me an winter vibe.
I love hearing you roast dolls loool. The careers ice skater and that halloween barbie are two I love though! Also, I think my main issue with the Fairy Secret one would be that her wings are too low down and look like they're coming out of her butt...
oh my god I had the American Idol Barbie! I saw it in a shop when I was around 10 and asked for it for Christmas that year. I was so hyped for it - I was convinced she must have a bendy body or something because of the way she was positioned in the box. But no, she's literally stuck like that. I found that a bit disappointing. I liked her outfit though, and all the bits and pieces that came with her - especially that karaoke machine that played Oops I Did It Again lmao
I agree !👍I used to love collecting the Halloween Barbie, it was a tradition to me ❤! But, then, Halloween Barbies just became cheap and i was DONE !!!
I agree that a doll wearing non-removable plastic clothes just doesn't draw on a person's creativity. But when it comes to the Dreamtopia line, I really, really like my 17 inch Dreamtopia Endless Hair Princess Barbie. She's posable, fun to dress, and she has a nice facial expression. I have the one with a cocoa complexion, and I really enjoy her. The only thing I wish I could change about her is the streak of purple in her long, dark hair. Thank you for making this video, Joey. You're authentic and expressive! I also enjoy your topics.
As a parent i will say this about the Dreamtopia mermaids. They are sturdy, with no loose parts to loose in the pool and therefore there will be no bereft six year old who is sobbing hysterically because she can’t find her Barbie’s tiara. Not the most Collector friendly dolls but my daughter immediately loved her mermaid and asked if she could sleep with her and Barbie is now a fixture in the bathtub. It also keeps her occupied and away from mommy’s fancy custom doll collection XD
Yeah, I keep wondering why Bob Mackie keeps getting selected to design Barbie outfits...What, is he sleeping with half the Board at Mattel? I don't care that he is a Fashion Legend. It's clear he doesn't know how to design for Barbie. As for my choice for worst: I wouldn't say they are the worst. I think most of the Holiday (Christmas) Barbies are bad. You spend so much more for them and the doll is OK, but not great. The dress, or outfit, is rarely good and only sometimes pretty. To spend that much on a Barbie and get..."well it's nice"... is not acceptable.
I’m pretty sure Bob Mackie hasn’t done a Barbie with Mattel in 10 years, so he doesn’t “keep getting selected”. He was a big name in fashion and Barbies 20+ years ago and designed some lovely (for the taste of the time) high-end Barbie Collector dolls. I think his Christmas dolls fell flat because he is usually extravagant, and they are the lowest-priced dolls he designed. I don’t think he knew how to work within those constraints. I disagree that he doesn’t know how to design for Barbie: some of his dolls are the best ever made by Mattel. Again, tastes have changed over time, but the fabrics, sequins, and embroidery are amazingly detailed and high-quality.
I have always hated Bob Mackie Barbie dolls, from the first one decades ago. They are just gross, their fashions way too ornate, and I would not want one if someone was giving them away! I refuse to collect anything but the true vintage 1960s Barbie family...
I'm very really disappointed on Nori mermaid doll ver. In the movie she is very confident, nimble her tail is very strong and gorgeous but for a doll version she looks like a baby fish nothing represents her character in this doll. I'm very sad.
I was surprised about the 2013 holiday barbie was on here the fabric for the dress isnt that cheap. Brocade is an expensive fabric and satin can be expensive (laser cut snowflakes) and her hair wasnt even that bad
I've always hated Barbies that "do stuff" like fly, twirl, turn, dance, sing, talk ... Even as a kid I was like Let Me Decide how to play with the dolls please 😑
Thank you for having that American Idol doll on list because that’s the first one that came to my mind. I got one when I was a kid and I was so disappointed that her body was stuck at that crooked weird angle. Absolutely awful, I never played with her.
The first doll, I got my daughter from the thrift store. I was taken aback by the lack of articulation at the legs. But my little girl loved how her wings spun around. It doesn't work anymore😅
I recently went back and started collecting all of the Barbie’s I had when I was a kid. If you grew up in the 80s, 90s, 00s you were lucky. I refuse to buy any new Barbie’s unless they are collectible ones, but even those have dipped in quality.
I think with Bob Mackie dolls you either love them or you hate them. I tend to not like them. I don’t like his Holiday dolls, they are my least favorite. There are some moon and sun dolls that just are overloaded with sequins and I just think they very tacky. There’s more but I can’t think of the names.
If Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie dolls were still alive today, she would be DISGUSTED to see her creation become a line up of sub-standard quality dolls. She's probably rolling in her grave.
It seems that as Barbie goes down hill MGA is making some really good quality dolls. I’ve been debating on starting to collect the omg dolls but at the moment I have nowhere to display them
What is with the face on that American Idol doll? Barbie usually has pretty/lovely/gorgeous face sculpts, even the cheap dolls, but that one looks horrible!
my least favorite barbie is gotta be the barbie rock 'n royals doll like i remember when my aunt got me it i was excited until i opened it. The doll looked pretty but there was no articulation on the legs. You can only move the hands but not the legs like it was sooo stiff that i found it so uncomfortable to play with. The mike on the dolls hand isnt removable and the the body was basically painted on and so was the necklace. the doll can sing but its pretty basic she can also change her cloths if u move her hand but still pretty basic asf. I really miss the days when barbies quality was so high.
OMG I had this doll and I think it was absolutely horrible no offence but no articulation whatsoever on the bottom half and the skirt was very low quality and it didn't change very well. No hate to this doll, it just did not meet the standards of the movie it came from.
The stupid part of all this is that doll influencers complain about the quality of Barbie nowadays, except they throw their money at mattel whenever they can to get some views.
I have collected Barbies for years and the quality of recent dolls (even the expensive "collector dolls" are so cheaply made). It's disheartening and if Mattel would go back to the quality of years past they would see a huge jump in sales. I've learned if the box is flimsy and cheap then expect the same from the doll inside.
The pink and white Bob Mackie Barbie that you don’t like the most and you said you didn’t understand the concept- the concept/inspiration is a “shooting star” 😀 the top of her diagonal sash has the star and the jagged edges are the shooting part. You can like or dislike any Barbie you want of course 💗 I am a Bob Mackie Barbie fan so I thought I’d share- and I am also a massive fan of yours too. I love your videos and your opinions and sense of humour- you are amazing!💗
It is supposed to be a shooting star??? I never noticed that :') I understand the concept, but kind of agree with him with the doll being kind of a mess. But I think it comparing with some of the other holiday Barbies, the two dolls he designed were unique
Honestly, I'm living for this! I always love hearing your opinions on Barbie. I do disagree with you on the 1st Holiday Barbie, as I own her and actually like her dress, but that's just my personal opinion. 😁💖
Children deserve high quality toys that had Barbie 90's. But I don't know a parent who would give his/ her doll from the collection away. Barbie 90's is an icon, a history but not a toy
I only like barbies up to about 2002 ish. I do like some of the modern Christmas dolls though. I mean, they used to have stars in their eyes… they were gorgeous! The clothing was nice too…. I’m sorry but I think they look awful now.
When I got the 2013 Holiday Barbie, I was ashamed of that dress she had on and the hair was filled with glue. The 2015 Barbie beach doll is very awful, smh.
The Mermaidia mermaid dolls with the stumpy tails were not so bad in person because there was a curve to the tails. It looks shorter in photos. However, I don’t understand the fins. That was weird.
I have too agree with you on all your picks, I can't stand molded on clothing , the fun is changing fashions, and also I gave up on holiday Barbies a long time ago

Gotta respectfully disagree with you about Nori from Mermadia and the American Idol Barbie. I actually appreciated Nori's 'stumpy' tail because unlike my other mermaid dolls, it never broke after taking her swimming with me countless times. And although her torso was curved, American Idol Barbie had a microphone she could actually sing into, so I made her the famous singer my other dolls would watch in concert. @@dmeyer7425 I just got halloween charm barbie from 2006 and I love her so much!
@@Jessieee
Yup I have her too. I think my favorite was the boo-tiful ghost. She was a target exclusive.
I had Bubble Angel Barbie (2:05) when I was a child. I loved the blue see-through, Cinderella like slippers she had! That's also the reason why I nowadays have myself see-through ballerina shoes made by Melissa :)
Always love your videos. You're one of the very few 100% homest toy reviewers. Everyone else just say they like everything and I think it's just too prevent arguments and offending the companies (probably also to continue getting freebies lol) but you just say it how it is with no filter. You're brilliant 💗💗 xx
Totally agree. They *NEED* those free products so they can keep making the most profit off of their videos.
@@DannyoffireAwaken I think with some it's more just for freebies but I guess others it's for more money too. I love that with Joey he keeps it real. He seems like a lovely person too 😊👍

Perfect examples of designing for the garbage bin. Colour Reveal is definitely the worst Mattel output ever.
Even children are maddened by painted on tops. My daughter has attempted to scratch them off!
Haha barbie roast
I honestly prefer the Barbie mermaids with just the tail, no legs underneath
For me they are authentic mermaids
90s mermaids were beautiful but they were just normal Barbies with special hair DRESSED up as mermaids (and some of their tails didn't look like fish to me)
The 2002 Mermaid Fantasy are the best because they had a tail that really looked like a fish and that really moved by squeezing the hips.
Honestly we don’t know why they decided to do the dreamtopia line, all the dolls are just tacky, colors super exposed, weird conmbinations…
And maybe the bob mackie barbie was based on the star of bethlehem??
His “Goddess” Barbies were magical. Idk what he was thinking with that one!
Whenever I get a gifted Barbie with molded hair I like to trim it off and make a wig for her lol
@@louisacoote2337 around 2015
I am kind of sad for you kids right now :')
В яблочко!😂
@@dmeyer7425 It is terrible, the bodice looks like star wars or some weird armor
I hate the Dreamtopia line. All the colors they use are so garish.
Tbh I HATE the painted on tops a lot of Barbie dolls have. I always hated them as a kid, too, because it limits your creativity when you're trying to play with those dolls. I don't understand why Mattel keeps doing it - it's not like the fabric they use is particularly expensive or anything.
"Hi, Joey!" 💝 Many of these don't even look like Barbies. Hopefully, the 'Barbie Movie' will inspire more classic and quality Barbies! 💖
I want the high quality pastel dolls back
I want the dolls to have puffy jackets and the princess dolls to have full gowns with LONG sleeves again.
@@accidentalalien4112 ikr
I just open my first Rainbow High doll (Violet) today and I just can't believe how superior her quality than my recent barbie dolls!
Hello did you get the 1977 Superstar Barbie ? That one is gorgeus , the 25th anniversary remake is not as gorgeous as that one
You should put Skipper babysitter inc on this list bc that line was so expensive and they were horrible
that's the sad thing- barbie isn't glamorous anymore 🥺
I'm so glad you included the American Idol barbie. I acquired the Tori one in a lot recently and was totally dumbfounded as to what it was... I couldn't believe mattel would have made this contorted stretched out monstrosity! WTF mattel?!
She's not so bad when you rebody her. That body never made any sense! I still have one floating around, I should send it back to Mattel lol.
I actually like the Bob Mackie Holiday doll because it gave me a modern type of Clara from the Nutcracker beside the mauve made her look elegant.
I've always been fond of the Bob Mackie dolls, his designs are actually fun and creative
I agree. I love them. They are the only holiday Barbie’s I ever bought for myself.
I really love them💗
What are you??
Halloween Barbie, rolling her eyes and pointing at her ear headband: I'm a cat. Duh
5:30 I would have NEVER guessed that is an original Barbie! Looks like a 5 pound bootleg
It looks like a toddler got a hold of some Sharpies had a field day.
I love mermaidia dolls ;'(
i am actually so annoyed at what mattel has done to barbie. like, what is their excuse? Cheap crappy hair, painted on and molded clothes - those are literally the two things kids like the most about the dolls just taken away. But the thing that i think really really shows how pathetically cheap they are is the whole not extending the pattern all the way to the back of the clothes. Seriously, just HOW cheap can you get, i just can't.... i'm so annoyed lol
And to end this on a positive note - love your channel!
😂
oh my god I had the American Idol Barbie!
I do want a follow up video.
All the hard plastic straight leg dolls. They break quite easily.
The quality of the barbies have gone down greatly. Barbie use to gave great quality clothes and accessories now everything is cheaply made.
Even though Mattel and MGA HATEEE each other I think they should team up for ONE a item and hopefully it’s good? Btw love ur vids bye!
@@c.w.2000 Your right, I should have looked it up first. It just seems I always hear that he designed this or that for Barbie.
I have always hated Bob Mackie Barbie dolls, from the first one decades ago. They are just gross, their fashions way too ornate, and I would not want one if someone was giving them away! I refuse to collect anything but the true vintage 1960s Barbie family...
The Holiday Barbies here are beautiful, there are worse Holiday Barbies like the last two or 2016 with the awful faces and plastic bodices.
I like the Bob Mackie holiday barbie I have the AA version of it ,she has good quality that modern holidays barbie dont have ..
As for the Bob Mackie dolls .. They don't call him Tacky Mackie for nothing..lol
Considering they’re supposed to be fashion dolls and dressable, plastic molded clothes are counterintuitive af
I was just checking if you had uploaded any videos recently! Btw I really like the quality of your channel and your accent.
my least favorite barbie is gotta be the barbie rock 'n royals doll like i remember when my aunt got me it i was excited until i opened it.
It was his opinion and it really is not that impression class A barbie editions so at least he made an awareness and critique about it
They doing barbie dirty these days 😢
I never noticed that :')
I understand the concept, but kind of agree with him with the doll being kind of a mess. But I think it comparing with some of the other holiday Barbies, the two dolls he designed were unique
Can you make a video with all the fairy Barbies??? Some of them are just amazing!!
Yess please make a Bratz one!! Would love to see it
Honestly, I'm living for this!
I think the idea to make a bubble fairy Barbie is very good, but the results aren‘t so good.
That was weird.
i just bought nori and I’m in love with her yes maybe the tails could have been given a bit more love but the doll itself is everything! 💫☺️🏳️🌈
I have too agree with you on all your picks, I can't stand molded on clothing , the fun is changing fashions, and also I gave up on holiday Barbies a long time ago

I was so disappointed with the color reveal dolls. They seemed to be phoning it in to get on the mystery package trend. They really missed the mark.

Lots of good memories with those dolls 💞
I had a Barbie mermaid I don't remember which line she was from but she had a rubber tail, and at her hips there was some like mechanicisn if you pushed it her tail moved

I actually had first doll but I gave it away to my cousin she was so happy, as a collector that doll was not it but for a kid to play with its really good cuality, especially that the clothing was molded on since by cousin have four other siblings, if the clothes were real fabric they would've gotten wet and sticky!
11:28 yeah I agree, when I was a kid (born in 91) I had a "kelly car". It had buttons on it that would cause the car to move.
I grew up in the 2000s, Barbie just isn’t a fashion doll anymore
Lmao i have the barbie and the secret door one, ngl i don't even remember how i got her since i've never heard of this movie untill now
It gets worse when u take off the fabric skirt.. also you can't remove the wand, she's currently lost somehwere in my old toys
I'm sorry but i don't recognize these dolls are Mattel/barbie dolls. For me, they're trash, simply genuine ugly dolls.
American idol barbie was a camp icon for having a broken spine and slenderman limbs, she was giving!!! Honestly id like to see you talk about more cursed dolls like her.
I have the america idol barbie.. and she's amazing. Her clothes are very good quality, and her hair is very nice. Her body looks wired in the package, but I swear once u get her out she's fine. But I do agree with all the rest..❤️
🤣 I love that you are "TOO REAL" with your reaction to these dolls
I just remembered one of my Barbie dolls who was a mermaid. I’ve completely forgotten about her, until I saw your video. Haha!
OMG I really dislike too when the "clothes" are not removable, or just, not made out of fabric in general
Absolutely cannot stand molded and painted on clothes. It’s called a “fashion doll”. Clothes stuck on dolls leaves no ability to change fashions on the doll. I buy Barbie’s specifically to change their clothes and to brush and style their hair. Period.
