  • The free material of Addressing Gettysburg is only the tip of the iceberg. Our Patrons get up to four episodes a month. We are making old Patreon episodes available for free in the hopes that it might make you want to support us. Please click here and become a Patron today. Regular contributor, author and former chief of interpretation here at Gettysburg National Military Park, Scott Hartwig, is back to, hopefully, put an end to the "shoe myth" for once and for all. At least in the minds of our audience. Here's the blogpost that inspired this episode Part 1 Part 2

I must say. Your placement of commercials is spot on. Really enjoy listening and learning to your material.

Did I put a commercial in this?

@@addressinggettysburg I meant the TH-cam ads. Not sure if you do that or not. The ads don't interrupt the conversation mid sentence. Lol

As I am listening to this I wonder if you could do a podcast, possibly with Scott and/or others, on how to pronounce "Gettysburg". I noticed during this podcast Matt and Scott pronounce it differently!

It has been determined that James Gettys, the town founder, pronounced his name phonetically as Gettis. Some of the local historians have adopted the Gittis sound, which is probably proper. The rest of us often still say Gettee. This is the truth to the story. Town historian Tim Smith has spoken with descendants and they confirmed the Gettis sound.

I love the shore story, even though it's probably bunk. I imagine that is Heth requested to go to get those shoes, it would be the shoes from the Union men they intended to whip. Early would have cleared the town of any proper shoes.

It's a Gettysnob way of pronouncing the local borough by calling it "Gettisburg"

I do believe it is properly pronuounced as Getiss but, the rest of the country outnumbers those in the the know and so, as far as I’m concerned, it’s Getteesburg
