The Cub Cadet 782 Lives! Onan P218G Engine - First Start in 13+ Years

  • The moment of truth! It only took me 5 months of wrenching (whenever I could find time), but I finally got the Onan P218G engine ready to mount and run in the Cub Cadet 782. In this video, you'll see the old Onan come to life after sitting idle for more than 13 years. That's not an exaggeration either; this engine was pulled out of a John Deere 318 back in 2005 right after the previous owner put a brand new carburetor on it. I have the original Onan box that the carb came in, and it has a 2005 manufacture date on the label.
    Since the last update video, I installed a new wiring harness in the 782 (it's for an earlier IH-built 782, so it doesn't have the neutral safety or reverse PTO relays built in). Also replaced the key switch and fuses. I found all the missing engine tins needed in order to bolt the 982 muffler shrouds up. But the tins were either rusty or had mismatched black paint, so I dropped all the tins off at a local powdercoating shop to get sandblasted and coated in satin black. I also had to replace the cheap eBay starter with a higher-quality starter because the eBay one didn't have enough power to crank the engine over, even with a full 12 volts from the battery.
    I got the new starter and engine tins installed, and mounted the P218G engine in the tractor once again. Hooked up the driveshaft and tightened all the CV joint screws, wired up the coil and regulator, installed the fuel tank with new shutoff valve and fuel lines, replaced the air filter & spark plugs, and changed the engine oil to Rotella 15w40 diesel oil (my go-to for opposed-twin engines). Also changed the oil filter and installed a new filter grommet (to keep the engine from losing any cooling air around the oil filter hole).
    I primed the carb and checked to make sure the fuel pump worked. Turned the key, and.....I'll let the video tell the rest of the story! Once I get a few more hours of run-time on the tractor, I will start piecing it back together. It's going to be a very tough worker when I'm finished with it...planning to add power steering, dual brakes, three-point hitch, and lots of other accessories down the road.

    Can you onan swap a gear drive, cub cadet vs the hydrostatic or will the clutch not work properly. I have a 1050 and i kind of want to get rid of the M10 (it runs really good,no smoke or anything) a twin or 3cylinder kabota in it but im not sure how i could make the clutch work or the mule drige work

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard of a couple guys running Onans in their 1050 pullers. You will need to use the engine mounting plate from a twin-cylinder model like a 682/782/1811 etc, and will need to make a custom clutch driver disk to fit the Onan flywheel since the bolt pattern is different from the Kohler.

    Nice repower, just gonna warn you the side panel on the oil filter side may be hard to put on. Had a p224 in a 82 puller and I couldn't use the engine side shields cause the side panel hit.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah this one is a really tight fit. The 13-year-old oil filter was about 1/2" longer than an OEM one, and it stuck out just far enough that I couldn't fit the side panel on. But I put an OEM-sized filter on it when I changed the oil.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sure the float doesn't have a small hole in it? I have heard of that happening with the Kohler twins before. The Onan's don't usually flood but they are always difficult to start when warm because of how the intake and exhaust manifolds are routed - the gas usually boils off inside the carb from the exhaust heat.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly. You'd have to swap the oil pan and starter with the ones from a B43G or B48G engine, and you'dhave to swap out the key switch with a regular 5-prong switch (no kill wire). The driveshaft also would not line up using the original pieces for the Kohler engine. You'd need to find the drive hub and pilot bushing for a 982, which are not easy to find. For that reason, I ditched the original driveshaft and had to use a custom-built driveshaft out of an 1862 in this tractor.

      @@MichaelTJD60 A dear late friend of mine told me they were known as the sidewinder. About 7 yrs ago, some fella gave me an old Cub Cadet. I can't remember if it was the same size tractor as this one, or perhaps slightly bigger, but it did have the Onan engine. ( Again, can't recall the engine size. ) He told me all it needed was rear tires & carb work. Had the plow, box blade & another attachment that I can't remember. The mower deck had 3 blades & I believe it was a 52" cut. Does that sound right? I know it was close to that. Anyway, I sold it to my late friend for $250.......only because he fell in love with it immediately, and I knew I may never get it running, lol. I knew nothing about Onan's at that time. Sure enough, he fixed it, and it ran great. When I pulled into his driveway, he was using it to "bush hog" the vacant 1.5 acre lot next door. He already had half of it mowed down & was still going. I swear, it was nothing but mostly thick, dense rag weeds & other weed waist to chest high, with many of the weed stems about an inch or more in diameter. He had that thing in 3rd gear I think, and that tractor was slinging those weeds 20 feet, lol. That motor was humming along just fine, not smoking, bogging, or sputtering at all. I had to jog to catch up to him, I kid you not, lol !!! Needless to say, I was very impressed. He used it for about 2 years & sold it for $1200. That was my introduction to the famed Onan "sidewinder". My late friend told me the Onan is one of the best gasoline engines ever made for small tractors.

      @@howabouthetruth2157 He was certainly right about that! The Onan's are my favorite small engines, they produce a lot of torque and are hard to kill (with proper maintenance of course). It's a shame parts are expensive for them, but they will outlast (and out-torque) a lot of other small engines in their class.

      @@MichaelTJD60 Parts being priced very high for these doesn't surprise me. I guess we get what we pay for. Take care.
