To my understanding, in the 70's and early 80's, any power equipment rated at or above 20 HP had to be classified as a compact or a utility tractor which would put it in a whole different market and would be subject to more regulation (as far as weight ratings, safety features, and attachment compatibility). This is why manufacturers like Cub Cadet (with the 982), Deere (with the 400), Bolens (HT-20), Sears (GT19.9/FF20), Simplicity (Powermax), and Ford/Jacobsen (LGT195) all rated their "super" garden tractors at 19.5-19.9 HP. Residential and estate owners likely didn't want to pay the extra dime for a tractor in a whole different class just to get the 60" deck.

I thought I read somewhere where if it was 20 hp or over they fell under a compact tractor and needed roll over protection devices added to them. Not sure how much truth is to that, But it does make sence.

I feel it is important to mention the Craftsman FF24, which seems to have avoided this because it cost $5300 brand new, less than other brands tractors with only 20hp

@@Claytonsgardentractors Good point. With those having been built in the early 80's, they came in around the time when the regulations changed and 20 HP was no longer the minimum - I'm guessing this is why they were never rated with the subcompacts of the time.

I’ve got the chance to work on a 1914 in my shop for a customer who is 5 minutes down the road. I’ll never forget when he sent me pictures of it and I realized what I was going to be working on. Did steering, brakes, lots of cleaning and it’s coming back in the spring to pull the engine out and fix the stator. It’s this tractor and my friend’s 1811 with 3 point that made me, a Wheel Horse guy fall in love with the 82 series Cubs. Gonna get my own one day. Probably will be 1572 or 1772 fully equipped.

Nice thing about any xx72 tractor is that they're all "fully equipped", minus the 3 point which you can add. But they're all power steering, dual brakes, and front outlet equipped.

Excellent video. I've always wanted one of the big Cubs. Your video is narrowing down my choice. I've had a first year and last year JD 420. I'm into the biggest garden tractors from that era. Thanks for sharing the information.

Great video with a lot of good information. Thanks for the shout out as well! I've also been curious about the 1872/2072 debacle - there must have been a significant cost difference in the engines for Cub Cadet to have to break them up into two different models. In terms of performance I don't think the 18 HP and 20 HP engines are all that different (except the 20 HP will use more fuel) - BUT the parts for the 20 HP are definitely harder and more expensive to find. You also bring up a good point about the 400 being a possible inspiration for the 982 - never really thought of it that way, but the "super garden tractor" concept really was taking off by the mid-70's so it was only a matter of time before IH joined the game. It's funny to think that the 982 replaced the 184 Lo-Boy (and the Cub tractor in general). The replacement was smaller and yet more powerful and ergonomic.

I believe the reason for the 1872 vs 2072 was Homeowners Insurance wouldn't cover 20 hp tractors on their policies. That was above their limit back then and who wanted an additional policy for a piece of equipment? It wasn't long after this period that Insurance Companies raised their limits to accommodate about anything.

    • @steiger256

That makes sense. I always wondered why they did that, But I could never find information on it. Thanks for sharing the information.

    • @williamhouk6880

I also think that's why that powerful Onan in the 982 was rated at 19.9hp to stay under that 20hp limit.

Great video and you have to very nice supers. Honestly another video I think you should do is compare the cub sgt to the John Deere 400 and 420 and the diesel models to the 430.

I have been thinking of doing that. I was waiting until i got a 420, But I have not found one at the right price just yet. I will try to get my hands on one to do a video on that. I will work on that in the next few months. Thanks for the ideas.

I've heard that these Kubota diesel engine mounts are prone to cracking and are made a substance called unobtainiuum. 😳 No problem with the 2182 gas model so if the diesel is your thing,, I'd grab up some extra engine mounts 😉 while you still can if you run across any.
2182 are supposed to be the same.

I think the cub cadet 1211 isn't very common. I have one and one other guy has one on the group and there's 2 or 3 on TH-cam and that's it. There's nothing special about it that I can tell I just haven't seen very many of them.
