Okay, as a physical therapist, I have several thoughts here -- firstly that orthopedist sucks. He clearly did a terrible job of explaining how a cortisone shot vs. naproxen works. Cortisone is not going to be immediate, it can take up to a week to do anything and sometimes it doesn't even do anything (also you have to be a little careful with cortisone because it is a steroid and if you use it too frequently you can actually weaken the tissue, among other scary things). Naproxen is literally what Aleve is, though the dosage might be higher in a prescription version. Neither of these things are going to cure anything necessarily. They're mainly to take the pain away temporarily, just like Tylenol would (although as a side note I have seen cases where simply reducing the inflammation does eliminate the pain for good). Secondly, you are the perfect candidate for physical therapy. They should be asking about your family history, so definitely let them know about all your mom's autoimmune disorders. They should ask you about your pain history as well, so don't be afraid to share all the different pains that you're having, as well as your history with the multitude of broken bones. Depending on the way your insurance and their company is set up, if they believe you have something autoimmune going on, they may be able to refer you to someone who is able to do the necessary testing for those things. Regardless if its an autoimmune disorder or a musculoskeletal disorder, PTs are equipped with a wide variety of pain management techniques and should be able to help you manage your pain. Lastly, while an MRI sounds vitally important to diagnosing a shoulder dysfunction, they're actually less helpful than you might think (and they tend to be crazy expensive). If you take an MRI of everybody you meet, something like 30% of them are going to show pathology but have absolutely no pain. And vice versa -- people with lots of pain won't have anything show up on an MRI. At the end of the day, what's most important is your subjective pain experience. (with all that being said, if you end up needing the testing for autoimmune disorders, and MRI might be part of it, though don't quote me on that). But I hope you have a good PT that listens to you and is able to find some solutions to help you. Living in chronic pain is absolutely no fun and I've got my fingers crossed you find a team that can help you!

Yes, going to a specialist in these situations is key. You know your body and sometimes we need to advocate for it when doctors try to spin it as "not a big deal". I know people who went to their family doctor for something, they thought it was no big deal and then turns out it was a disabling disease. Only finding out after multiple visits to different doctors. I am sure in most cases, it's not anything serious, but best to go to a specialist or professional in the field.

Maybe you can hang the tv instead of having it propped on the dresser, if there is room for it above the dresser. You could put some pictures of you and Zac on the blank wall to the right of your bed. You could flip over the mirror that is propped on the wall. You can also add a plant in a corner and get a cute pot for it (a fake plant would be best for a bedroom). You can also add a shelf somewhere on a blank wall and put some pretty purfumes or souvenirs on it to spice the walls up a little. Hope you can take some of those tips to good use!

For the room decor: for the curtains, you can attach a long strip of Velcro to the back that can attach to the wall to stop the light from peeking through. Then you can hang the mirror on the blank wall along some frames. For the dresser, you can buy some cute cheap knobs from amazon to replace & refresh! & for the blank space next to the bed, you can get a small stool (target has some) & put a faux plant on it!

Ugh, you're right! Health is such a process. I have endometriosis and I learned that you have to be your own health advocate. Don't let doctors boss you around or only give you a few minutes of their time. Demand more, do your own research, go with a list of questions/possible diagnoses. Make them hear you. If something hurts, then something is wrong. They'll try to placate you by giving you pain medicine and sending you on your way, but that won't treat the underlying issue. I wish you well, Clancy! I hope you get the answers you need.

Clancy: the shoulder pain could be inflammation around the tendon that moves inside a very small opening in the shoulder as you move your arm. Doc told me this is caused by weak muscles in the back. Not the big ones, the very tiny ones that control movement. Physical therapy will help with this a lot! They also use heat before and ice after so it really doesn’t hurt. Exercises were so simple and small that it could be deceiving. Stuff like grab a resistance band and pull it outward (like you’re opening a door). Doc said this happens a lot to people who sit and use a desk for long periods of time as we slouch and let the big muscles do the work and the small muscles get weak. (Find a rheumatologist for the immune questions you have.)

I think fairy lights can be decorative in the bedroom at anytime. It's just how you style them. Rolled up in a clear vase or jar and strategically placed can be quite pretty without being overwhelming. You could try stringing the lights across the headboard or have them cascading down a wall like a waterfall (my favourite). I think the key is confining the lights to just one space or area. Clancy have you looked on Pintrest-for ideas? Another thought. Focus on a theme which would make it easier for you when looking at items. Eg. Maybe an all white or cream colour theme where the styling is emphasised by texture only, such as simple white bedding and 1 or 2 white/cream textured cushions to add contrast.
You know I'm just thinking out loud, these are ideas I'm mulling around my head at the moment, I'm ready the change up my rooms in my apartment but I've got to stop my random shopping. If I stick to a theme and one or two colours, life should be simpler. Shouldn't it. Lol. 😄

Consider going to a sports Ortho doc who has a DO versus MD - they will consider all of your symptoms, not just 1 body part. Could also go to a GP. Ask for bloodwork work to rule in or out auto immune issues. It’s a shame, but you have to do your research and ask for the tests you know will give you the answers you deserve. Good luck - getting rheumatology diagnoses can be a daunting process but you’ve got the determination. !! Stay the course and keep trying docs until you find the one that will listen to you and consider all of your symptoms.

Ok, I hope you don’t mind unsolicited advice, but here goes: look into an anti-inflammatory diet. Since you can’t eat dairy, I would recommend a calcium supplement; it sounds like you may be deficient. I would also recommend a blood test for Vitamin D deficiency as most of us are deficient. Finally, I would try acupuncture! It’s not cheap, but it really does work. Disclaimer, not a doctor, but I would consider these things just based on your symptoms and what you’ve told us. ❤️

I think Sarah makes a lot of good points. I personally believe this is diet related in someway shape or form as is any autoimmune disease. Most of them can be fixed with a radical change in your diet. It’s not always something that people wanna hear because it’s not easy but it does work just like Montel Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and he cured it and he cleared it with his diet.

I have endometriosis and began a BIG flare in June that kept getting worse and ended up with me in the hospital twice the second time because the left side of my body completely stopped working. I spent a week in the hospital and I still left with no answers other than "probably your endo and probably a neurologic disorder but we don't know". Pain is such a difficult thing to live with and it's so difficult for doctors to figure out because a lot of the times pain doesn't show up on scans or in blood tests and they're as much in the dark as you are. The best thing you can do is keep fighting and keep going to doctors and letting them know you ARE in pain and you DO need help. Bring up a list of disorders you think you might have and they can test for them because maybe they didn't even think of that and it is what you thought. Being your own advocate is hard but is so worth it in the end.

I've been having wrist pain for the last 2 months and it's progressively getting worse and this morning I was just thinking how I should probably go get it checked out cuz it's getting to the point where it's affecting my daily routine. But the cortisone shot I have heard it makes you gain weight and there's other side effects which you would have to look into . But I agree with you I also hate taking medication and I only leave it as a last resource. since January I was really struggling with a lot of joint pain and I decided to look into natural remedies which have really helped.

Mount the tv above the dresser so that you can display stuff on the top of the dresser. Get some plants for the empty corners (I recommend snake plants and fun fact you can order plants on amazon) and a few floating shelves for the empty wall. Instead of propping the mirror up to keep the curtain flush against the wall install little sticky velcro pieces to the curtain and wall so you can velcro it closed to keep light out.

I feel your pain - like LITERALLY. I have fibromyalgia and hashimotos and deal with a lot of what you are experiencing. I had a "frozen shoulder" for FOUR YEARS before it finally loosened up enough to crack the shoulder to relieve the pain (but it's still painful). I had x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI's, cortisone, physical therapy, blah blah blah. All that did was rack up insane medical bills and nothing helped. I hope you find some answers and relief! Chronic pain is the WORST!!!!

I had severe shoulder pain and shoulder weakness. It ended up being an impingement of my rotator cuff. I waited about 8 years to go ( I'm 39). They offered a cortisone shot, and I reluctantly got it. Holy Cow...... it was like I got a brand new shoulder!!!!! The shot hurt a little, but I got it back in May and I haven't had a single bit of pain since. It was soooooooo WORTH IT!!!

So, you have a lot of white going on in your bedroom - easy fix - get some curtains that match your bedspread with color in them. Look for blackout shades - they do have them in different patterns & colors and will do a better job of blocking the light. Get enough curtains so they are full enough to extend past the window so you don't have light peeking through. That one blank wall is huge - get a wall mount & put your TV on it and make it one of the ones that you can swivel (I have that in my living room and it's great). Instead of the rope lights, maybe put a pretty electric fireplace/heater on your wishlist for christmas. You would have a mantle to decorate, warmth (electric heater) and the glow you are looking to replace from the rope lights. You might have to move some furniture around, but you could make it work! That would be so cozy for you. Get well soon.

You can add some plants to your bedroom it’ll liven it up, in the humidifier corner and the corner by the dresser/window. Change the hardware on your dresser and night stand to give it a refresh. That empty wall by the bed you can put up some pictures that even you can print and get black frames it’ll look nice once it all comes together. Can you mount the tv to the wall? So then you’ll have the top of the dresser free to add whatever you want. You can add a few pretty books or a “platter” with your perfumes and colognes. I love homemaker/decor shows watch them all the time! Hope your shoulder feels better and you find the answers you’re looking for. Sorry reading this sounds like do this do that😂 not meant that way just suggestions.

Naproxen is NSAID basically generic Aleve and is recommended for muscle/joint pain that can be caused by arthritis...it’s a higher dose than OTC. I would recommend finding a PCP (primary) they will review you family history and do blood work to rule out common vitamin deficiencies and recommend specialists for any ongoing issues (rheumatologist, ortho, etc) if needed. Also, PT is pretty standard with shoulder/joint pain. From my personal experience PT won’t make the issues worse, therapy will relax the the area to decrease inflammation and then apply specific exercises to strengthen and possibly prevent further wear and tear. When I was your age, I tried to avoid meds and surgery as well, so I welcomed the PT and found it helpful.

For your bedroom first things first you could do a few small things like this until you decide what you want to do on the walls but personally I would push the bed as close to one wall as possible (leaving just enough room for a nightstand and so you or Zack can still get into your side of the bed but it would give you quite a bit more room and I think then it would be easier to find something for just the one major blank wall adjacent to the bed. You could decorate the top of that dresser the tv is on with some small fake plants, some pictures, candles, whatever cute decor pieces and that would help cover the bottom of the tv (or distract from it anyway) and you could also replace the knobs on your dresser for some fun ones so you don't have to dedicate to a paint color to change it up! lastly if you pushed the bed over like I mentioned you could add a small fluffy rug (or whatever kind of rug) with the more open space it would create that would give it a more homey feel too! I'm sorry I love decorating and my mom used to be a decorator when I was a kid and I would go and help her and stuff and I've done a few places and I think its so fun but thats what I would do to short term make it more homey and personal! Then all you would have left is to decorate like one wall. P.S. I forgot, hanging planters aren't very expensive at all and you could get a cute one of those for your room so everything wouldn't be so low to the ground and I love plants too so if you don't have a green thumb you can always get a golden pothos, they literally can survive with so little light its nuts and you can even just straight up "plant" it in a bowl of water and put it in the hanging planter so all you would have to worry about is changing the water whenever you notice it gets gross (it will take a pretty long time before that happens), and occasionally add water as the plant drinks it (this also will take a while) but its way easier to notice when you need to water something when its in an empty bowl of water than when its in dirt, haha + its cleaner. Bottom line it would be nearly impossible to kill this way and those plants are super sturdy, I've never been able to kill one. OKAY I'M SO SORRY FOR THIS NOVEL, this is prob super pointless and you'll never see it but I'm bored at home and my work still hasn't opened bc of the virus so I clearly have a lot of time on my hands, haha. Hope you're having a great day if anyone read this whole thing! Xoxo

Hi Clancy! I went through something similar in high school! I’m 25 now but in high school I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which ended up being lupus. I remember not even being able to get out of bed for hours because of how much pain I was in. My arms and shoulders hurt so bad I couldn’t move them I just felt like cutting them off. I remember it starting off as flare ups and just getting worse. I went to a rheumatologist then diagnosed me with lupus and Started treating me. Thankfully we were able to find a medication that helped ease the inflammation but I do think the pain or flare ups go away on their own. The flare ups usually happen due to hormones in women...I would go see a rheumatologist to take care of it now before it can get worse! I hope you are able to find a good doctor out there and I hope your pain goes away!! 💙

Just put a bedside table on the side where that empty space is, and maybe put a cool lamp on it, or a floor lamp next to it. And I think the main issue is just that the room isn’t as feminine as you/I like. Put a brighter or girlier color comforter on, get some cute throw pillows for the bed. Get some cute pictures for the wall. Get a fake ficus tree(so you don’t have to worry about it dying), and put white lights on it, put it in that corner next to the tv(my parents house has ficus trees w white lights going down their hallway on both sides, it’s so pretty, I love that look). Hang the tv on the wall, use the top of the dresser for like, pictures and stuff. That’s all really easy and inexpensive to do, and it would make a big difference. ❤️
You could also put a small chair w a throw pillow and/or throw blanket in front of that window, like in front of the ficus( that I really think you need, apparently. Haha).

It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion! I had issues with pain a year ago, and the first doctor was NOT helpful. She essentially told me that it was "all in my head". The second doctor I went too was ten times more helpful. She listened to my concerns and found me a great method of treatment. When in doubt, go see another doctor! Especially if you didn't get to have a lot of your questions answered.

I have headaches on the daily that connect from neck to my temples. All I was given was muscle relaxers and pain medication but I'm also mortified to take medication. I get medication to treat my symptoms when all I want is to find the root of the problem. It's so frustrating.

  • @Zoetta11
    @Zoetta11 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Clancy! I had a VERY similar problem. It all started after I got the flu shot!! The normal soreness you get after the shot never went away and felt different from the beginning. I went through all the steps that your physician suggested to you (X-ray, cortisone shot, physical therapy etc.) I did end up getting an MRI but it came out clear. Physical therapy made my shoulder pain worse, and the cortisone shot did not work. My physician said that based on my signs and symptoms as well as how my shoulder was reacting to treatment, it seemed like a nerve problem. Nervous tissue heals a lot slower than other body tissues, and that’s why it seems never ending! Essentially, I just had to wait the pain out. It finally got better after around 5-6 months. So I’m not sure when your pain started or if something like a shot triggered it, but I hope my story gives you some insight!

Maybe paint the drawers and or get new knobs for the bureau.
    A plant would be great.
Hang the mirror. Get room darkening curtains and wear an eye mask to sleep.
Can you hang the tv on the wall to free up the top of the bureau?

For the past 2 months I’ve had intense pain in my elbows (pinching to be exact), shoulder pain (right side), ankle pain, and I couldn’t move my wrists any longer because of sharp pain I would feel just by moving them.
I went to a chiropractor and little did I know that my shoulder was misaligned so bad to the point that it was causing major tension along my neck and shoulder blade area. That resulted in my elbows and wrists being misaligned. My misaligned hip had been causing my ankle pain. A few days after my adjustment, I could say I’m so happy to finally be able to move again without pain!
I’d recommend looking into a chiropractor to see if that’s a possible option for you, because I know that if I didn’t address my issue soon, it would’ve lead to crazier health issues in the long run. Hope things go well for you, Clancy!

As someone who has had major issues like this since I was small, my autoimmune issues emerged when I was 13. It took 6 years and 8 orthopedists (on Long Island) before an orthopedist told me and my dad that there's nothing on an Xray, but that doesn't mean there isn't an issue. That lead to splinting, cortisone shots, 2 casts, then tendon surgery. (which worked great until I broke that wrist).
Agree with others who mention the rheumatologist. I also suggest going to the university health group tied to a teaching hospital (UC Health, I think), because you tend to get integrative care, when you have multiple health issues, they coordinate your care better, and you do blood work with one, and any doctor in the group can access the results. All of my doctors are convinced I have lupus, but it's a diagnosis of exclusion, and I don't have the two symptoms that usually appear.
I've lived with daily pain since 13, the last 13 years, the average day was pain scale 5 or 6 out of 10. Two years ago, I started the Autoimmune Protocol and got my life back. With your dislike of taking medicine, you may want to look into it.
Naproxen is the stronger form of Aleve.

I work for an orthopedic group specifically in the authorizations department. I see and talk to patients who have shoulder pain on a daily basis. Almost all insurances require 6 weeks of conservative treatment: NSAIDs, injections, bracing, home exercises, physical therapy etc. You don’t have to have completed all of those, but at least 2 with no improvement. Unfortunately insurance dictates the healthcare you receive. (That’s why they would only see you for one body part) I would try physical therapy/ home exercises. Then go back in 6 weeks and request an MRI. You may have a rotator cuff tear or SLAP. The only way to confirm is an MRI. If you can’t physically do physical therapy at least have them document it. That way you have a record of attempt for insurance. I hope this helps and you can figure out what it going on!
