You should use hobby paint remover to strip the old paint from it. When you painting on. Keep more distance with paint can. Sure you will use a bit more but the model will be nicer too close make too tick paint layer. I use to paint with spray and learned that by doing it with around 18 inches distance minimum To model come out much better.
The reason air brushes are used is because normal spray paint is too thick and covers the detail. You have way more control of how much paint comes out with an air brush. The shell should have been stripped first. I know I am posting way late but I am sure people are still watching. I just came across this my self.
Why are you priming over paint. It serves no purpose except to hide the details. Athear paint can be stripped easily enough. You wont need as much primer when you start with a clean model. Just sayin.....

Remove all the paint first by soaking in Isopropyl Alcohol for about 1 or 2 or maybe even 3 days. Detail is lost with too much paint build up.

kbkchooch I find it easier, and the primer that I use goes on thin that it does not hide the details.
