Black walnuts don’t have to go very deep to germinate. At least, not in upstate New York. We had two, in our front yard and when the nuts fell off, I loaded them in a wagon and took them up in the neighbors woods and dumped them out for the critters. If I missed any in the area next to the road, they’d pop up the next year. The thick, composting grass, was enough for them to sprout.

Josh, info about bald cypress. They are very prolific in sprouting and need dry ground to sprout. Once sprouted, they can be kept in a bucket of water to grow; I have done it in NE Texas. Yes, they are slow-growing, about 12 inches in diameter per 100 years. They don't have growth rings if cut down. If they grow where the water alternately covers and uncovers the roots, vertical growth will form on the roots called knees and will grow about 1/64 to 1/32 inch per year. As long as the tree is well started and can't be shaded out, it will be happy to grow in good ground. They love water and soggy conditions because not much else will grow there. The leaves look like needles but are not and they do fall off in the fall after turning brown hence bald cypress. The leaves are feathery. The wood is very soft; in fact, you can mark it with your thumbnail. It is very rot-resistant and termite-resistant. Cypress is home to just about every Southern state around marshy or continuously wet ground. I think they will grow to between 50 and 75 feet tall. You are correct that they are gorgeous.
Check with your local NRCS next time you plant. They might be able to hook you up with a tree planter that you can hook up to the back of your tractor. You will need to get someone to help you but it's a lot faster than a Dibble bar.
crab apple are really good eating grandma use can them whole with spices goes really good with pork or deer they also add flavor to cider made with assorted apples 🍎
Have any of the crab-apple varieties been bred to be SWEET as opposed to sour? Can they be used for jams or jellies? Love the Kitty! All of the critters doing OK? BTW? OSAGE wood can be used to make BOWS!
I have two 100+ year old apple trees that are nearing the end of there life I am considering taking some cutting from them and grafting them onto a crabapple sapling
