oh hey I'm in this video side note, are you still planning on mentioning Verve and his research into FEH AI later? I feel like it should have already been in this first part since I know it had a huge influence on me as I found myself referencing it often (and not just for AR purposes... in fact, usually not for AR purposes), but for all I know maybe I'm not a case of the bigger picture, or in-depth AI knowledge isn't supposed to be a part of this video, or whatever other thing I overlooked, it's your choice either way in the end but I felt I should mention that.

I just completely didn't think about it at the time of writing the script. Really great video! What a blast from the past. I remember coming back to FEH after Aversa got added since she was one of the units I wanted in the game along with Mozu. I loved Aether Raids so much for the first month. My maxed out Aversa (+2 at the time) was carrying me hard since people didn't switch to in-combat boosts yet. I had a lot of familiarity with different teams and enemy Aversa setups and was able to handle anything except Future Vision due to its unpredictability. As Surtr and Mythics were added, I immediately knew that the mode would feel P2W that will force either orb hoarding or perfect play and investment into Mythics for score instead of favorites. I dropped the mode around Fallen Corrin's release, but still followed news. When Edelgard came out though was when I tried to get back into it with the addicting Galeforce Sweeping. It required more careful planning ahead than usual, but it was so fun to manage to rip through everything in a single turn. The introduction of more annoying upgrades to old units made me drop it again like with Brave Ike and Lucina.
This was very well put together and an interesting video to listen to! Since I started FEH in Oct '19 I missed almost the whole early progression of AR and this made me wish I had played from the beginning. :,( I made it to Tier 21+ in 3 months of playing (F2p) thanks to Halloween Hector and Kronya, but at the time didn't understand what was the big fuzz about AR being "cancerous." comin' in hot with loads of sick content lately! 🔥 the number of times I want "oh yeah, I remember that!" while watching this video was absurd. it's pretty crazy realizing this game has been around long enough for there to have been entire "eras" in terms of the meta 😅 that subtle laugh when you were talking about Altina being an offense mythic at 41:00 killed me too lol
What a trip down memory lane, I remember despising AR until Brave Ike's refine (who luckily I had at +6 prior to it) for... basically every reason you listed lol. Fantastic research and presentation!
Awww yeah, you got the 9-day week! I remember terribly disrupting my sleep schedule on the final day to check for a defense replay, knowing that I needed a success to cross into T21.
I can explain how much i love this video. And I am impatient to see the next ones... And your voice is soooo relaxing I freaking love It, you got a new subscriber
As someone that joined the game in 2021, i cannot express how educational this video is, such a great video man! The thing that actually surprise me the most were actually the nerf to the maps layout, i don't know that never occurred to me as something that they changed 💀 Of course the Queen of light Season Peony prolly must have been insane impactfull on the meta Already excited for the next video, great job Man 😃
Great content, as somebody who started playing on book 5 i always hear about units like brave lyn and brave ike warping the meta (which i didn't understand at all)and this finally answered my questions about it in a very entertaining way. Also idk if you didn't mention because people didn't realize it at the time but you mentioned some brave ike counters none of which was eliwood who got his refine at the same time and im pretty sure ar-d spd/res hardy bearing and glacies eliwood would instakill bike (and deny his aether in case he didn't).
Agreed, there were several versions of Eliwood that were very meta in including the Glacies version and the more common lunge Galeforce one who wouldn't kill Ike but would move him away from Luci and get into the back line all at once.
@@KM-kw1mb Eliwood is still meta influencial to this day but more on offense than defense i think since saves completely deny his nuking due to guard and lunge galeforce due to near save. I use him on light season to galeforce off nott and sigurd which is specially good right now due to the fury seal making it easier to get into WoM range. He is the best galeforcer in the 3/4 star pool.
@@Oblivionknight i used to run him on defense earlier in the year before saves became super common with ar-d spd defense and ignis he still does good into anything that isn't near save bector and smashed so many bikes it was shocking seeing him deal upwards of 80 damage with ignis
This video is so good, I don't really know what else to say lol. As someone who was there for Day 1 AR the memories this video brought back were wild. I think I still have a screen recording of someone wiping my team with 2 Duo Hectors and a Kronya. Also 0blivionknight if you see this Cookie Run Kingdom is going to add a cookie character that reminds me of your knight man avatar lol. Look up Tea Knight Cookie.
I felt a lot of nostalgia at the "omnitank" part. I've been at tier 21 and currently in and out of the vault of heaven with two F2P accounts (I inherited a friend's account) and for both accounts my strategy was the use of omnitanks- Nowi at one account and Nah at the other. With the advent of FEdelgard I end up replacing both girls as I was lucky enough to get +2 and +3 Fedelgards, and that's my "strategy" to this day- wait for the lighting tower to strike, slap FEdelgard in the butt towards the enemy formation, destroy the most dangerous units, pat myself in the back for being such a wonderful tactician. That and using AFjorm against ranged formations.
Damn i played this game since launch and this video just made me remember how hyped i was back then with the new banners and the old buids. The time before the dark era and mini tesis skill descriptions
Y'see, _this_ is a history lesson I can mentally invest in. Warning, I have a whole ass essay down here, for which I am sorry. I dunno where the inspiration for it came from >~< As someone who joined up sometime in the summer of 2020, during the Summer Passing banner, I didn't really have a grip on the meta and just kinda picked the units I liked (to some degree this still holds true, but I tweak units to make em suitable for whatever they need to do in modes like AR, Arena, Mjiolnir's Strike, etc.) Ruse became basically my preferred support style by accident when I picked B!Eliwood as my free summon on a whim, having just gotten off of fe7 on an acquaintance's suggestion before then playing 3h (imagine my sheer joy when I saw this lad give the biggest middle finger to Fedelgard with his refine) And nowadays, I've settled comfortably into a nice spot. Tier 21 AR, pretty solid defense teams that often give good results, a few finished +10 projects with others in progress, -plenty of waifus and husbandos- I'd say I've done pretty well for someone who had no clue how the game worked when he began and who's made a fair number of questionable decisions, eh heh. While feh's done it's fair share of no-nos, I enjoy the game and don't regret starting it :D -from, your average reclusive gamer
@@Oblivionknight I mean, if you're not playing for fun in this game, you're probably not gonna have a good time keeping up with the ever-shifting meta. Or I wouldn't, at least, but I do believe that a nice balance between being competitive and having fun maximizes the enjoyment you can get out of a game, this one included
Mufasa, Eir, Aversa, and Sutr all seem poised to get refines this year. Im so excited to see if they reemerge at the very least to get some types of niche soon
I can only imagine the amount of hours spent researching all of this. Watching this made me realize that I got caught up in the Ophelia craze. I don't normally get caught up in "meta" stuff but spamming AoE specials is fun. Wonder where her refine will take her.
One more thing that should've been noted, Hardy Bearing was now more prominent when Altina was released, due to her Brave/Vantage kit, I remember she used to break Ophelia and Reinhardt teams, until Hardy Bearing became a hard counter for her.
Man, so this was what all I missed after I retired from FEH at the end of the July prior to AR's release, funny thing was what brought me back to the game was the 1 thing I said would be the only thing that could do it, My boy Merric Getting an Alt, which happened just in time for me to miss out on Altina lol, man I hated trying to fight her back then, but after I crafted a spurn Bike (and skill powercreep happened) she stopped being an issue at all.
@@Oblivionknight The funny part was despite barely managing to get one he was an atk bane lol so I wound up not using him and just continued on with my max invested Regular Merric, I did manage to get a 2nd Y! Merric when the banner reran, but I still never bothered to build him oddly enough, I should really get around to doing that.
It's funny to think how awkward Altina's position the game was (and probably will be until like a year or so from now), that few minor changes to the character (making her Infantry and a Duo/Harmonic Unit instead of a Mythic) created one of the most powerful units to ever exist (W!Altina). And it's kind of funny to think that the day Altina gets a refine, W!Altina is also gonna do it (though, without the remix). It was quite a nostalgic trip this, I never was a particular player of AR, but I got to see a few highlights thanks to people like Pheonix and Akariss, so I'm familiarized with most of the terms... It's kind of wild seeing how everything evolved.
Altina definitely was put into an awkward position wanting to be a carry unit, but not being able to receive any Mythic buffs. I hope with her remix they give her enough power to fill that role again
@@Grima1805 Its definitely more difficult to do now, but if that's the goal you want to hit you can definitely do it! Just gonna need to save orbs for mythic merges and practice AR
I used a combination of Sutr and Aversa, Sutr with distant counter and defense skills and was very hard to kill in time, for the attackers, even my +1. I stopped around tier 18 with the game and started recently again Since the halloween banner with H!Rhea as main. I am around tier 18 again now. Very interesting to see the time i missed.
I don't recall rally traps to be used that much during the pre-meta, people started discovering & optimizing them over time. I think you could've put a dragon like Nowi or Fae in the graph for the f2p omnitank part as they were much more popular & easier to build than something like Donnel. Also I'm surprised you mention Nailah but not Fallen Lyon, although released a bit later, he was literally made as an anti-meta unit that could solo all the Reinhardts, Brave Lyns, Veronicas (plus other healer cavs) and Ophelias that were going rampant and still very hard to deal with. I don't think Altina was that impactful in the meta honestly, she was a good vantage tank but people were already prepared for that. She won AHR because she was the new shiny unit and people thought getting an astra mythic would improve their AR performance/rewards (although there was no chance of it happening when you really think about it) but she aged pretty poorly. That's some of the nitpicks I have about it but I gotta say I enjoyed the video though. Made me remember the times when I climbed to tier 21 with just an unmerged Eir and mostly going hit & run with ranged cavs and dancers. And when you could make a pretty threatening defense just by stacking some cavs together with a nuke like Ophelia + a dancer in the middle. That were some fun times... I still like Aether Raids but I can't really say I'm enjoying the L!Sigurd/pathfinder/save meta that much.
im Happy that I start The games on Jan 1st where i can get borh Byleth, yuri littery 3h character xd! getting Fallen just damn broken..now i got luck with double hector At home Og hector come same time with azura and ced to she fun now i can clear chain more faster!.
I remember how in the past people also didnt read the rules properly so many ignored the pots in the past lol It was the reason i was in the top at the start of aether raids
just look at them just doing big bungus go while we now have legendary sigurd bridal catria forced initiation rally restore trap XL light & kuckles with dante from the devil may cry series prepare to die edition. not even considering how insane weapons have become we now have so manny shenanigans that i think that if they could of done that in the beginning of ar you literally couldn't win against that.
It was definitely a simpler time. The funny thing is I think Aether Raids was more difficult in year 1 then it is now. We have so many powerful tools for Offense it's a bit ridiculous
@@Oblivionknight but the gap between f2p and wales is way larger now. i play since the beginning so even f2p i have all those things but i can't imagine how bad it would be if you start right now and have to deal with that.
As someone who's been playing since day 1 I miss the F2P golden era(sans horse emblem def teams). The meta we are in now sucks with how much cancer I have to deal with.
I joined the game late as I wasn't sure about gacha games, but Surtr became my favourite character. Wish I could made use of him during his time in the meta, meh whatever, still gonna try +10 him anyway.
I dropped off a little after they came up with Null C-Disrupt. As a F2P I pull Surtr with STR+ Spd- and felt like a monster. Then they took that away. I remember Three Houses spoilers, like Sothis came out as a Red Dragon, basically the counter to Surtr. That all compounded to take me out of the game for a while. Interesting to see what happened over the long haul of it all.
Such a nostalgic vídeo! I really miss the CC + Vantage meta. I would crack almost every single map with my Broadleaf Fan+ Sothe no problem. It was a really powerful strategy, but also demanded skill and strategy to pull off, witch made it really satisfying when executed effectivelly. Book III was propably the best of times to play FEH as f2p too, I feel, since the Grail pool had really interesting units available for the competitive AR players. Recently I lost all my old passion of AR and FEH in general, not because of Peony and the Book IV fairies, not (entirely) because of the L! Sigurd, F! Edel or Save skills annoyance, but simply because the game has been aggressively favoring money spenders (whethers whales or dolphins). I ardently HATE Duo units. This type of unit is, in my humble opinion, the symbol of everything wrong with this game right now: Duo units have high artificial BST like legendaries units, witch is to blame for the unreacheble Arena tier 21 score ceilings (D! Dagr reaches 200 BST, my dudes! And the highest BST available for f2ps is still just 185) and they are blesseble, so there are no restriction of use in all modes (L! Sigurd, for example, only have his full power in AR-D during wind season and even so he is countered by even pulse tie, stall ploy etc). Also everyone is forced to have at least one Duo unit to enable the obligatory Duos Hindrance building if you want to mantain some sort of high score in AR. It's so tiring, you know! Before this, we should just keep up with the meta with strategy and skill, but now It doesn't feel that rewarding anymore. Sorry for the soft ranting here. I liked the vídeo very much and i'm looking forward for Part 2!
I agree. Duo units are essentially 6 stat heroes. They are built to be more powerful than your average 5 star and they made them more and more powerful to force people to use them. Its unfortunate
Gosh, i remember when the bolt trap was super useful to upgrade cuz people wouldnt use healing tower, staff users or vantage lol I upgraded to max the bolt trap and i regret nowadays, as the enemy can take advantage of it Also it was terrible always seeing "failure -120" but everyone saw it so it kinda was a meme lol
You can definitely start now. The anniversary is actually in 9 days and they give a ton of free stuff away so its a great time. Only thing I recommend is choosing if you want to play competitively or just for fun before you do summon for characters
Aether Raids was fun in the beginning. I enjoyed the first 2 seasons. Then came the stall defence stuff and I noped outta there. I come back once in a blue moon to get some quest rewards and that's it. Defence teams are so not fun to go up against. Also, keeping up w/ Mythic boosts and stuff is a chore imo.
man, i remember the lead up to book3 like it was yesterday. honestly felt like the game was so much better back then. intsys really held no restraint in 2021 and all the questionably bad and gamebreaking decisions last year made feh not enjoyable anymore, it makes me miss the simpler days of the game. recently deleted feh because of it, modern day feh just doesnt have that appeal anymore

At the end the video is a wing creature in the shadow with Red glowing eyes.
Really enjoyed the video. Nice work 👍🏼
Glad to hear it :)
comin' in hot with loads of sick content lately!
It's crazy that this game is about to be 5 years old. There's so much that has happened and so much that has changed.
What a trip down memory lane, I remember despising AR until Brave Ike's refine (who luckily I had at +6 prior to it) for... basically every reason you listed lol. Fantastic research and presentation!
Thanks! :)
Awww yeah, you got the 9-day week! I remember terribly disrupting my sleep schedule on the final day to check for a defense replay, knowing that I needed a success to cross into T21.
That sounds so stressful lol. Not to say I haven't been in a similar situation though. That week was definitely a big one for the Tier 21 meta
This is a great video! Nice trip down memory lane
That was definitely my intention. Glad you enjoyed it
I can explain how much i love this video. And I am impatient to see the next ones...
And your voice is soooo relaxing
I freaking love It, you got a new subscriber
So glad you enjoyed it!
Yo GRATZ on the 1k you ABSOLUTE DESERVE IT
Thanks!
As someone that joined the game in 2021, i cannot express how educational this video is, such a great video man!
The thing that actually surprise me the most were actually the nerf to the maps layout, i don't know that never occurred to me as something that they changed 💀
Of course the Queen of light Season Peony prolly must have been insane impactfull on the meta
Already excited for the next video, great job Man 😃
I'm glad to hear that. I'm hoping this video can act as a documentary of sorts, so people who join later or forget can see the impact of year 1
Great content, as somebody who started playing on book 5 i always hear about units like brave lyn and brave ike warping the meta (which i didn't understand at all)and this finally answered my questions about it in a very entertaining way.
Glad I could help. That's true he did become a common counter and definitely began showing up all over Aether Raids, especially after his resplendent
Those were my least favorite Eliwoods :(
@@Oblivionknight i used to run him on defense earlier in the year before saves became super common with ar-d spd defense and ignis he still does good into anything that isn't near save bector and smashed so many bikes it was shocking seeing him deal upwards of 80 damage with ignis
Wow! 😳 amazing video! This was so incredibly engaging I didn’t even notice how long it was! Can’t wait to see the next one ☺️
Thanks Ari!
Me when I slowly got into Ar: Cav line is so easy to counter.
When L!Sigurd showed up: Allow me to introduce myself
This was absolutely amazing!! Subbed
Thanks :)
LOL omg he does look like a cookie version of my OC
Nice video as always. Oh good old days, cc vantage, days when you can clear 90% maps with Kronya 😆
I loved that meta. Maps always felt so satisfying to beat
Nice video! I just became your 1000th subscriber, so congrats on the milestone!
Thank you so much!
There are definitely days I do the same. Just end turn Brave Hector and win
Nice video dude ❤️ I started playing very late and it's interesting how AR changed
Honestly AR is such a crazy game mode. It's insane how much the mode changes and adapts to strategies
Love love the series! Can you do one on arena one day as well if possible or on pawns of Loki?
I'll probably tackle Arena eventually, but I'm not sure I know PoL well enough to talks about its meta
Damn i played this game since launch and this video just made me remember how hyped i was back then with the new banners and the old buids. The time before the dark era and mini tesis skill descriptions
Always fun to look back at those old days
Y'see, _this_ is a history lesson I can mentally invest in. Warning, I have a whole ass essay down here, for which I am sorry. I dunno where the inspiration for it came from >~<
As someone who joined up sometime in the summer of 2020, during the Summer Passing banner, I didn't really have a grip on the meta and just kinda picked the units I liked (to some degree this still holds true, but I tweak units to make em suitable for whatever they need to do in modes like AR, Arena, Mjiolnir's Strike, etc.) Ruse became basically my preferred support style by accident when I picked B!Eliwood as my free summon on a whim, having just gotten off of fe7 on an acquaintance's suggestion before then playing 3h (imagine my sheer joy when I saw this lad give the biggest middle finger to Fedelgard with his refine) And nowadays, I've settled comfortably into a nice spot. While feh's done it's fair share of no-nos, I enjoy the game and don't regret starting it :D
-from, your average reclusive gamer
That was fun to read. I'm glad that you were able to find success with your favorites. That's one of the best feelings in this game
@@nerothewateruser8030 Completely agree
Ah, I remember wanting to get into this mode for well over a year but being unable to get in until 2020ish.
Goddamn, the cliffhanger right after Peony...
Love this when is part 2 coming out cus I want to hear how you tell us how fedelgard traumatized people
11:35 what is that cutscene please.
It's from the second Lord of the Rings movie
Mufasa, Eir, Aversa, and Sutr all seem poised to get refines this year. Im so excited to see if they reemerge at the very least to get some types of niche soon
It's insane to think that could be happening, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. They are some my favorite and oldest units
Remember when everyone run cd, slaying, close call, noontime and pulse smoke? It seems like it was yesterday
I liked that meta
I can only imagine the amount of hours spent researching all of this. Watching this made me realize that I got caught up in the Ophelia craze. I don't normally get caught up in "meta" stuff but spamming AoE specials is fun. Wonder where her refine will take her.
It took a ton of time tbh. I completely underestimated how much research would be needed.
Baby Merric is such a great unit too
@@Oblivionknight The funny part was despite barely managing to get one he was an atk bane lol so I wound up not using him and just continued on with my max invested Regular Merric, I did manage to get a 2nd Y! Merric when the banner reran, but I still never bothered to build him oddly enough, I should really get around to doing that.
@@EnergyBurst2 Hes still a great unit
I remember in the beginning, I was so close to getting a golden thron
One of the golden thrones I'm missing actually came from the first two weeks. That lesson taught me to never drink and play AR lol
@@Oblivionknight The closest I got to a golden thron was in the beginning, now it's hopeless
The last time in the game i actually liked it. Stayed through book 4 but dropped very early book 5 and don't really look back whistfully.
Sorry to hear that. Even so I love this game period too. Definitely one of the best periods to play the game
8:22 I like that TH-camr.
Pre AR meta summarized: 🐎 ⚡️⚡️
This is definitely the Three Houses Era. If your a big fan of 3H then this was great time to start
I remember how in the past people also didnt read the rules properly so many ignored the pots in the past lol
It was the reason i was in the top at the start of aether raids
That's so true. People were so confused by the pots and the scoring system
just look at them just doing big bungus go while we now have legendary sigurd bridal catria forced initiation rally restore trap XL light & kuckles with dante from the devil may cry series prepare to die edition. not even considering how insane weapons have become we now have so manny shenanigans that i think that if they could of done that in the beginning of ar you literally couldn't win against that.
It was definitely a simpler time. The funny thing is I think Aether Raids was more difficult in year 1 then it is now. We have so many powerful tools for Offense it's a bit ridiculous
Don't foget the duo sigurd dancer trap and corner F!Edelgard.
@@Oblivionknight but the gap between f2p and wales is way larger now. i play since the beginning so even f2p i have all those things but i can't imagine how bad it would be if you start right now and have to deal with that.
@@esrohm6460 Definitely. They need to expand Heroes Path so it offers way more help to new players
As someone who's been playing since day 1 I miss the F2P golden era(sans horse emblem def teams). The meta we are in now sucks with how much cancer I have to deal with.
I definitely miss the old days too. Powercreep has come a long way in such a short time
I joined the game late as I wasn't sure about gacha games, but Surtr became my favourite character. Wish I could made use of him during his time in the meta, meh whatever, still gonna try +10 him anyway.
He should be getting a refine soon, so he may become good again and pirate sutr is still amazing
@@Oblivionknight Ya, I'm praying for his refine. Oh but for sure thank god for Pirate Surtr, I can wait till then.
@@Oblivionknight Sorry for my terrible english!
@@llukelcs It was completely fine. i understood everything :)
bro just explained the early ar lore like the fnaf lore 💀
Gosh, i remember when the bolt trap was super useful to upgrade cuz people wouldnt use healing tower, staff users or vantage lol
I upgraded to max the bolt trap and i regret nowadays, as the enemy can take advantage of it
Also it was terrible always seeing "failure -120" but everyone saw it so it kinda was a meme lol
I did the same thing. The high damage on the Bolt trap let my Brave Veronica/Brave Lyn combo to smash enemy teams
Man I've always wanted to play this game but I feel like it's just too late for me
You can definitely start now. The anniversary is actually in 9 days and they give a ton of free stuff away so its a great time. Only thing I recommend is choosing if you want to play competitively or just for fun before you do summon for characters
I don't wanna remember the Era of Surtr and Brave Cavalry (Lyn and Veronica) 😑
Lol 😆 Those were the simpler days though they were annoying in there own ways
Aether Raids was fun in the beginning. I enjoyed the first 2 seasons. Then came the stall defence stuff and I noped outta there. I come back once in a blue moon to get some quest rewards and that's it. Defence teams are so not fun to go up against. Also, keeping up w/ Mythic boosts and stuff is a chore imo.
Mythic merges definitely are just an orb tax
man, i remember the lead up to book3 like it was yesterday. honestly felt like the game was so much better back then. intsys really held no restraint in 2021 and all the questionably bad and gamebreaking decisions last year made feh not enjoyable anymore, it makes me miss the simpler days of the game. recently deleted feh because of it, modern day feh just doesnt have that appeal anymore
I hope they can make changes to improve the game and so we can go back to the good time feeling
Return to Fir meta COPIUM
That's how I feel too, but return to Fallen Ike meta lol
Mythics were a mistake. I don't like being forced to use units I don't give a shit about.
I would agree. Mythics definitely helped to shrink the pool of units used
