This. Is. Genius. Not sure I've experienced such joy watching a YT video in a long time. Long live expertly made, intensely creative, content that helps us navigate and process this soup of images we're swimming through everyday.

Welcome to the 10 minute BrainCraft video essay. I'm always experimenting with format, so let me know what you think 🙃
And do you have a favourite remix?? Right now, mine is "Smashmouth Recreated From Windows XP Sounds" (see 9:42)

my favourite pogo has to be the TNG one; th-cam.com/video/bl5TUw7sUBs/w-d-xo.html but there are some great songify contenders for general remixes [e.g. can't hug every cat or obama singing call me maybe... ]

So we crave repetition. But at the same time, if something repeats too often, we grow tired of it. Food for thought.

I saw a video made by a guy named Adam Neely that stated that in modern music, nobody is original, that everyone creating music today has slight influence from other artists whether we realize it or not. I feel like this has been extremely heightened by remixes from as simple as using another voice to cover a song in almost the exact same way to mashing together different movies and TV shows into a song. I, myself, admit to making many (experimental) remixes that (a small amount of) people seem to enjoy. Not only is it fun to look at, it can also be fun to make. I think that's why we (sometimes or often) like to listen to songs that sound similar to other songs and why we like remixes.

This video explains prefectly, why I love hiphop, and why it became so popular so quickly. (Sampling being part of it from the very beginning, easier to participate then other genres since you can do it without instruments etc). But this is just a theory, a some kind of theory

I never felt any nostalgia with this video 'cause I am from the Philippines and not from USA and context and culture-wise I never knew those people presented in this video and don't have visual or emotional memory of them that really can make me nostaligc...........but the repetition of words, scenes, and videos made me seem to feel weird, happy, scared, afraid, dizzy, and amazed .......................my head is aching right now honestly.............but I love this experimental modern art-like video you made.

Kinda makes me inspired to write a program that takes the transcription of a video and checks a database of every song ever made (with lyrics) if the video has words to make up the entire song. With a little help of autotune and some background music, it'd be a very easy way to make a remix of something like a politician speech.

I wonder if remixes have any staying power. Also, how many times can you combine remixes to produce remixes and still be effective?

Interesting subject, but I'm not sure we all like remixes.
I like remix of a song only if (in my opinion) the remix is better than the original song, e.g. because that remix fits better into my favorite genre of music. But remixes are often seen as a fake / bad copy of the original song, movie, etc. Some remixes are highly irritating for me.
Speaking of "irritating", this video has too many flashing and frequently changing images - It's uncomfortable to watch. I was close to clicking the thumb down button because of that. I didn't do it just because I like this channel very much and I appreciate Vanessa's work.

I am a sucker for incongruity, especially when it’s in the spirit of mingling differences in culture. Gimme a cattle auctioneer set to a trap beat. Gimme cybergoths dancing to Thomas the tank engine. Gimme footage from one of those hands-on-healing mega churches where people ‘catch the spirit’ and freak out and play Black Metal over it so it looks like a mosh pit. All of that is my jam!
P.S. That channel with the calculator music did a damn fine version of Despacito.

  • @ThatShyGuyMatt

One Remix that is really well done is the Thomas the Train Engine remix using Biggie Smalls rap song. BTW its very NSFW in terms of language sadly. But its a good remix none the less. Though if you want a "safe" one to listen to look for the Fresh Prince remix of Thomas.
