I agree with this so much. When I began memorizing poetry I didn't initially realize the change of my written voice, but after a year I showed a friend of mine some writing and he was blown away. "How did you get so good?" he said. In my mind, it was a little Auden, Shakespeare, Milton, Roethke, St. Vincent Millay, Blake, Wordsworth, and Whitman. I could see their fingerprints all over my words. But how do you explain that?
Also, I'm a much deeper reader after memorizing poetry. I notice a lot of things other readers don't.
However, none of those are the reasons I memorize poetry. I memorize poetry for the same reason I smell flowers. It is one of the most sublime things a human can do. Poetry is the beautiful domain of humans-no other creature can enjoy poems. They are the pinaccle of language, which is thought symbolized. Why would I not want to enjoy the greatest thoughts humanity has been able to create?
    Thanks for rhe video.

Came here from your M&B shill. Suggest learning to remove the "ums" from your diction.

Fair point. Most of my videos are fully scripted, while this one was from notes, so more ums. I'll have to get better on that, though, if I do more from notes.
