Hi Maura, another good informative vid from you. Your examples are particularly illuminating. But hey there, we Anglos would not say 'since three kilometres ago'. Rather, we would simply say this phrase without 'since'. You have made the distinction between 'desde hace' and 'desde' clear to me for the first time. Well done.
Prepositions are among the toughest things when learning a European language because... what do they really mean anyway? Something is "to" me or "for" or "at" me? Something is "of" me or "from" me? Or why not just not use them at all? You can talk me or yell me and everyone will understand what that means because you can also write me or call me.
I feel you! I always tell students not to obsess over prepositions because they'll come with time and usage. In the meantime, it's exactly like you said, people will understand even if you don't use them perfectly. =)=)=)
You'd have to change the tense to be able to use "por". Instead of "es de" you should say "ha sido" and then you can use the "por": Ha sido de la misma familia por décadas. EVERYBODY would understand the sentence you wrote, though and it wouldn't even be an obvious mistake to most people. 😉
Is that a mistake at 10:43? "De pequeños los humanos" etc - Surely "de pequeños" means "at" a young age, not "from" a young age. "From" would be "desde pequeños"
'Since' and 'Ago' only really refer to time in English not distance. It can relate to distance travelled but only in the sense of the time it has taken.
Actually we would say either, "get the books from the drawer" or "get the books that are in the drawer", but not, " get the books of the drawer" which makes no sense in English.
