ERA vs FUE: Do you know the difference?

Hoy vamos a hablar sobre la diferencia entre "era" y "fue". Estas son formas del verbo SER en el pasado. ERA y FUE pueden ser muy confusos para los estudiantes de español, pero hoy vas a entender para siempre cuando usar ERA y cuando usar FUE.

Don't give up, practice reading in Spanish everyday until you get it right.

"Entender para siempre" is rather a bold claim - you don't know how long some of these things take me to absorb!
Pero, mil gracias por una explicación sencilla pero completa. I especially like that you give examples that use "fue" but then say, "but if you use 'era' esta bien" - or algo más or menos! And thanks for the reminder about reading - we can use it as an opportunity to process for a little longer why either "fue" o "era" was used in a particular situation.

Cuando era nino, era delgado, timido y guapo. Vivia en una casa ubicaba en un pequeno cerro en mi pueblo. La casa era pequena, y era pintaba de colores verdes y blancas. Era muy acogedora. Todas las parades eran de madera, pero el suelo era de concreto. En estos dias, mi mama era muy estricta, pero en general era muy amigable. Siempre cocinaba platos tipicos, y encantaba cantar todos los dias.

That's the easy part of understanding. What gets confusing is when you're speaking about the current day you're in or close past event.
Example "I read that book and it was difficult."
People will tell you to use "era" for descriptions but with this sentence, you would use "fue". Now if I say "I was reading this book the other day and there was a point where the book was so difficult." I would use "era.
Like this "Estaba leyendo este libro el otro día y hubo un punto en el que el libro era muy difícil." That's where people get confused.
