This is part one of a series in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! A melting pot for many cultures, this means there is nothing but unique and extraordinary takes on dishes as you see the culture and cooking flavors come together. .
I start my day off with a classic Malaysian Breakfast then head off to the Batu Caves to witness some breathe taking views. I finish off my journey in Petaling Street or the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. I find so many Chinese influenced Malay dishes and other Chinese classics!
I hope you all enjoy the video, feel free to comment, like, and subscribe if you like the content and want to see more!
Also let me know what you would like to see and where you would like to see my future travels take me!
    Wishing you the best,
    Max McFarlin

I'm glad you found the food in Petaling Street. It's far better than the touristy food that are sold in Alor Street. Also, we call them Chinese Food or if you want to be specific, it's Malaysian Chinese food. When we say Malay, we are referring to a particular race. Malaysian Chinese food are not (only) influenced by Malays. In fact all food in Malaysia has been influenced by each ethnic group. Eg. Curry Mee; there is a Malay version, Chinese version, Indian version, Mamak (Muslim Indians) version, et cetera. If you were to explore each state, Curry Noodles will taste different as each state has their own take on just this one dish. Now imagine the variety of dishes that we have here in Malaysia that has been influenced by Malaysian Chinese, Northern and Southern Indians, Malays from various tribes and states, Indonesians, Thais, Mamak, Punjabi... the listt goes on.
I don't know if anyone had already mentioned this; but that crunchy thing in the Hokkien Mee is deep fried pork lard. On the Fish Head noodle, the fillets are mainly from fish heads and that part with the long bones are from the rib section just before the head of the fish. We also have curry versions.
The sugar in the Tau Fu Fa is Palm Sugar we call Gula Melaka (Malacca Sugar).
It's so nice to see the look on the faces of foreigners when our food hits your palates. It's sad that many who visit us for the first time, are just too frighten to try the local dishes. They really don't know what they are missing.

Victor Lopez thanks so much for all this information man! This was actually really helpful so glad you chimed in! What are some of your must have dishes from Malaysia? Certain dishes I must try in specific states? I feel like I could learn so much from you!!

    • @catchariderocks
      @catchariderocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's a huge list actually but off the top of my head are Bak Kut Teh, Chinese Chicken Rice, Rojak Pasembur and Chendol in SS15 Subang Jaya and Chinese soft skinned Popiah (klang is my spot for this) to name a few. You should also visit our weekly night markets (imagine the Pasar Ramadan you visited but much larger).
If you come back here, contact me. I can show you the sights.

Jalan alor has varieties beyond chinese food. But sadly many stalls are run by migrant workers(not locals) i was told. And slightly higher price as it is touristy of course.

@@keangwooichoo6138 I believe most tourist don't mind the prices as it is still very cheap for them after conversions.

Hi Max! I came across your channel while binge watching Malaysian food videos.
Considering you're rather new in this, I'd say you did quite a good job. Part of the joy of discovering a new channel is seeing how you guys grow from all aspects (commenting, editing, shots, developing your unique style, etc etc).
What I like about you is that you're genuine, and did not resort to over-to-top commentaries or making a general fool of yourself. I hope you'll stay true to yourself, and take your time to develop your own unique style since well...Rome wasn't built in a day, yeah? lol

The kaya toast you dipped in the tea is usually served with a half-boiled egg that has soy sauce and white pepper on it. And you dip the toast in like what we Aussies call "toast soldiers".
Jalan Petaling rocks at night. The hotel I stay in when I go to KL is right on this street. Bargaining for stuff is a sport and a great way to spend an evening interacting with the stall owners.
10:15 The drum of charcoal with the chestnuts in it is a smell that drags me back nearly fifty years. I swear I can smell it 200 yards upwind!
Did you try air mata kucing- literally "cat's eye water"? The sauce on that tofu will be gula melaka- palm sugar. Then you've got the places that sell sliced fruits on skewers.

The way to do the million dollar bite with nasi lemak is that get a bite of the chicken mix the rice, sambal, anchovies and peanut in a spoonful and stuff it in your mouth like there's no tomorrow. The hokkien fry noodles you should ask for the belacan which is a chili paste that you can go with the noodle. I recommend that you split your noodle in two portion, one with original flavor and the other one with belacan it's awesome. Eating that fish head noodles with that much chili padi in one bite is ballsy man even I don't dare. The tau fu fa/ soy bean curd is best eaten with brown sugar syrup or you can try it with the ginger sugar it elevates the flavor to a new level. Drinking soy bean milk I recommend brown sugar it's way better than white sugar. Anyways hope u enjoy your stay here.😄

That sauce of the chili (served with fish head beehoon) is actually light soy sauce. Most of the Chinese noodles in Malaysia are served with this condiment.
