    Indeed the mulch is a game changer. I only have a tiny garden, but even in a hanging basket or planters the same formula works. Fresh wood chips straight from the shredder can limit plant growth substantially during the first season, because it takes time for the micro organisms and insects and the woodlice to grow their colony large enough and to break down the wood. And yes, woodlice (which are not insects) are a big part of that cycle too, because they do a lot of the hard work by breaking down larger chunks of bio mass (large for a bacteria), and the waste materials from the woodlice also feeds the micro organisms. So it is recommended to add matured or composted wood chips to the area where you want to grow food or ornamental flowers, and to use fresh wood chips only for the pathways and your compost pile or worm bin.
