No-dig / No-till vegetable garden beds | From start to planting 🌱

- I’m in the process of converting an old unkept allotment into an ecologically managed ‘no dig’, or ‘minimal disturbance’ vegetable garden and it’s finally time to create the main growing beds.
The allotment had been dug over year after year, and the soil has sunk and degraded overtime. However, by mulching, instead of digging or tilling, we can mimic natural proccess and start to rebuild the soil structure and allow the myriad of like within to thrive, whilst creating a symbiotic relationship with the plants as they grow, increasing yields and boosting biodiversity. 🌱🌼🐝
There’s also far less weeds and effort once they are made. 😊🙌🏻 and ground beds are cheaper to make and are less likely to harbour pests than raised beds.
Why would you ever dig? 🌱

Fascinating! I’ve watched much of Charles Dowding’s content, so this is very familiar to me. Love the idea of a roll of packing cardboard, so much easier than stripping down boxes. I would love to do this to my small garden, but we are plagued by cats owned by my various neighbours. That compost would be full of cat s-t overnight!
I cant wait for this channel to take off so you can add more frequently. I really enjoy watching/hearing you.
That’s really nice of you to say 😊 longer form videos take some getting used to, but I’ll be putting more time into the channel over the coming months, so I’m glad you enjoy them 🌱
What a fabulous job . Can't wait to see it evolve. So glad you started the channel.
Thank you so much! 😊 and I appreciate you watching over here too🌱
I tried the cardboard, but it attracts to many bugs that eat up my plants roots. Plants that have a huge root system seem to do fine, but smaller plants like my lettuce and zinnias were demolished. The rolly polly's love the cardboard and small plant.
I’m soooo happy you’ve started a TH-cam channel!💚💚💚
Thank you 😊 I’ve been meaning to for a while now and finally have the time to do so 🌱
Great video looking forward to seeing how things progress
Dang.. I should have watched this before I killed myself digging my bed out with just a mattock and a shovel! I’ve got some other stuff still to plant so am going to give this method a try too :)
Great video, really informative and helpful 🧝🏻♀️
Thank you 😊 Glad you found it helpful!
Great video, good to see the process and how simple it can be! Really transformed it into a more inviting space as well.
Thanks so much! 😊🌱
So satisfying to see the beds develop!! 👏🏻
Thank you 😊 glad you enjoyed it 🌱
Very good
This is a very satisfying video, can’t wait to watch your progress.
Thank you so much 😊 lots more to come! 🌱
These look very decent, do you have any videos on the growing schedule and doesn’t the no dig approach work with most veg or fruits ?? 🎉
Great video! Newbie here. Could I do this over partially weedy clay soil and be able to plant directly into the compost?
You can! And in fact it’s a great way to immediately improve your growing space and soil, what I did was strimmed the weeds as short as possible and then added a good layer of the mulch…if the weeds are quite invasive you may want to try and remove some of them or there roots, just because otherwise they may pop up in your beds (I’m thinking things like cooch grass, bind weed, thistle, ground elder etc) but even if they pop up, just keep popping them out and they will weaken and disappear because of the layer of mulch, hope this helps! 🌿
Thank you 😊 Yes, absolutely, the kitchen garden had clay soil too 🌱
@@megsophie8261 thank you so much!!
Only two videos in, but I can tell this is going to become my favourite TH-cam channel! Love everything you do on Instagram and am so excited for the longer form content 💚
That’s so nice of you to say, thank you! 😊 I’ll be posting more here over the coming months, so I’m glad you’re enjoying the longer form posts 🌱
🥰🌱
Hi Jamie, I am really happy to have found this channel. Whereabouts is your new plot? I am still struggling with the weather here in Staithes so my plot is still very wet.
Hi Alan, I’m glad you found the channel too, thanks for watching! 😊 it’s over near kirbymoorside, so very similar weather, very wet too 😅
Brilliant! Would you use this method on a (steepish) slope/edge?
Yes, absolutely, in-fact the short clip I show on the video of the other garden I caretake is on a hill, so we used this method but terraced them 😊
You’re content is the best content, I hope @youtube realise 🎉
I agree 🙏🏼
😂 thank you, nice of you to say! 🌱
Looks great! Do you plant right into compost?
Thank you 😊 Yes I do!
What size is this plot and how many bulk bags of compost and wood chippings did you use? I’ve just inherited a very similar allotment so I’m trying to figure out how much I need to order
How much did this cost?
Hey Jamie, loved the vid , nice to hear a northen accent, all i get here is french accents 🤣🤣🤣, i know you grow tons on your regular plot, i wondered if youve ever grown chaote , im trying it this year for the first time, so any prosand cons would be great, all the best from France ,,,, Dave
Hi Dave, thanks so much! 😂 I haven’t grown it before actually, so apologies that I can’t give you much of an insight
@@Nettlesandpetals no worries, maybe ill flip info to you if it works out ok ,
Hiya my g. How many of those big 900l bags did it take to make all these beds? Tryna figure out how many bags I need.
Keep up with the vids. Steezy dude.
I was wondering the same thing. I've ended up going with 750L bulk bags from the brand 'Eco' because they have a guide on how much you need to buy
How do you plant through the cardboard with the soil so shallow?
The cardboard degrades quite quickly so by the time the roots reach it they can penetrate quite easily, but if you were to plant a larger plant straight into them, I just make a hole in the cardboard 😊
@@Nettlesandpetals, oh great to know.
