V rings on either side of a fixed bulkhead... think of really big V rings with extra large flange lips.. on large ship propellers where they go thru bulk heads. so the ship can flex without any fear of a flooded compartment leaking thru the gap.. making the V seals Split to allow replacement and installation since pulling a propeller shaft on a 1,000 foot long ship is not easy.. see if you can find a copy of the Emma maersk accident report.. it will show that some but not all of the flooding was caused by the ship flexing the shaft seals leaking..
How would you do it if you need water not to enter the joint, for instance, in a washing machine?
