I was born in Scarborough in 1954 and we lived on the North Side. For some reason! we were popular with relations, who would visit us in the summer months in the early 60s. We always enjoyed going to the Mere, it was on the other side of town from us, which made a change, and was a lot of fun, watching the water ski school and our parents would make for the cafe after sending me and my cousins off on the Hispaniola. Great fun looking for doubloons, sometimes a pirate would come by and ask if we had found any, if not, he said "try over there" and we would discover some.
As an aside, our next-door-neighbour in Northstead, Ted Wadsworth, was a war veteran, and had lost a leg in the Merchant Navy, after he retired from sea he got a job on the Hispaniola, complete with a peg-leg supplied free by the council!

Great stuff, I was one of the trio that rescued her and spent the winter of 1997/8 ressurecting her. There is only about one thirdof the original hull left, the rest was renewed.

@@NorthYorkshireWanderer Im afraid not, there was a feller with a VDO camera who created a vdo record of the work over that period. However he refused to share the results with us, quoting copyright stuff, saying that the results were his, and nowt to do with us!

    Holy smoke!
70 or 71 years ago, I did it all, went on the boat to the island and was the first in that boat load to actually find a Dubloon.
At that time, there was a 'Crow's nest' of sorts, up a tree, I recall being Super excited climbing up to it and being immersed in the whole Pirate experience.
I don't actually remember having a certificate to go with the coin. Sadly, I don't know what happened to my coin. I do remember that it was a 'Boy's' magical, treasured possession of the time. And here I am today, in my twilight years, reliving those carefree moments, again.
    Thank you!

Oh What memories , My parents took me and my brother on the treasure hunt island in the early in 1960's and I was fortunate enough to find a doubloon on the Island . It held such excitement for me at the time , I still have my doubloon coin dated1751. Literally a childhood treasure . I was too young to remember it was located in Scarborough . A magic experience for young children ..Thank you Andrew .

I visited this aged 8 or 9 in the mid 1980s. Straight after disembarking on treasure island I found a food coin that wasn’t properly buried. We’d not been told we could start hunting though and the pirate in charge told me off and made me cry

We holidayed in Scarborough in 1979 and sailed on the Hispaniola. I returned to Scarborough for the first time last summer and only upon leaving did I discover that it still sails. I will take my family next summer for a few days and hopefully I'll find my way back onto the Hispaniola with my own kids in tow. Excellent video as always.

Another great video, I’m born n bred in Scarborough, but have lived in Norfolk for the last 20 years, haven’t been back in Scarborough since 2011. Your videos bring back many fond childhood memories. Up by Scalby Mills, on the N bay there’s a grand walk goes for miles and eventually leads onto the cinder track you talk about in another video, also not sure if you’re aware, again on the cliffs at Scalby Mills there used to be a rifle range target butts, built during the war I think, must still be there, we used play for ages down there looking for grass snakes and slow worms, might be worth a visit get the history of the place. Oh and it’s Doubloon, not Dublin, also schooner, pronounced Skooner as opposed to shoooner😂 keep up the good work 👍

Halcyon days, family holidays at Scarborough in the early 1950's, the Hispaniola crew really put heart and soul into the trip and certainly looked the part and got us kids so excited digging in the sand on the island, getting the dreaded black spot stuck on the back of your hand. I note in comments plastic Dubloons, they were definitely metal in the early fifties. Combine the Hispaniola with the naval battle at Peasholm Park, half a day sat on the high wall round the railway station train spotting, great trips inland onto the moors and of course the sandy beach, what more could a boy ask for! In my book not a mobile or lap top that keeps them occupied nowadays.

I was born in 1966, living and growing up in Bristol. In the very late 60's early 70's (easily before 1975) my younger brother and I were taken to Scarborough for a summer holiday. Even now at 56 years of age I can clearly remember being taken on the Hispaniola to 'Treasure Island' and the thrill we experienced when encouraged to successfully dig in the sand for doubloons. Back then you were allowed to keep them and I did so for years as a kid. Every time I saw them they immediately took me back to those memories. With that and the Naval Battles on the boating lake in the park, it stays with even to this day.

I just want to say WOW what a fantastic video, I have watched several of your films now and brought back so many memories. I am 57 now and remember loads of the things you are talking about. Scarborough council have a lot to answers for, seems the council don't or wont invest anything into the projects like this or Peasholme. The town is my home town but now live in Pickering and I am now more and more ashamed to call Scarborough my home town, keep highlighting this like this and maybe one day the council will start to look at its natural assets

You hit the nail on the head Andrew.... nowadays yes the Hispaniola is on the North Sea but something is definitely missing !

that was about 1968 .. my mam put it into her purse for safe keeping .. never saw it again .
My Ma passed in 2011 .. and sadly going through her things found a purse and in it was my Dubloon .. Thanks for saving my coin Ma

Next time I visit my friends over there I must take a ride for sure. I loved the way you integrated the old footage and photos with your fabulous drone footage and your choice of music score was spot on. Really fantastic stuff, I loved it. Just a vague memory, almost like a dream, but one that kept coming back to me, especially when, in more recent years, we visited Scarborough and drove past the Mere. Many thanks for the great nostalgia trip Andrew. I made the trip to Treasure Island on the Hispaniola back in the 1950's, I still vividly remember digging at the base of a tree and suddenly there was a doubloon in the hole. I suspect it was dropped in by one of the pirates while my head was turned lol.
I can not remember what happened to it or any certificate but a few years ago I acquired another one to keep. It must of inspired me as years later you could often see me on the beaches of the East Coast with a metal detector looking for treasure. Sadly due to age and ill health I can no longer do it.

My very earliest -- but equally very faint -- memory of Scarborough Mere was of walking/sliding on it, frozen to ice in the severe winter of 1947.
I strongly suspect that the biggest catalyst for the introduction of the Treasure Island attraction was the great success of the 1950 Walt Disney movie of Stevenson's Treasure Island, starring Robert Newton as the all-time quintessential Long John Silver. I do remember sailing on the Hispaniola several times in the 'fifties, hunting for doubloons, and climbing up to the crow's nest. And by the end of the decade, the water ski school was a big draw for my more athletic schoolmates.

I even found the doubloons when I cleared my Mum’s house. Can’t believe how small the Hispaniola looks now, I remember it being massive. Thanks for the memories. Doing a sponsored walk on the 24th Sept from Whitby Brewery to Scarborough Athletics ground for prostrate cancer. There’s a good group of Seadogs doing it. You are more than welcome to join us if you fancy it. Cheers mate.

Cheers mate! Glad it’s brought back some memories & that you’ve got some Doubloons! I think the boat must have seemed bigger to us all sailing on The Mere compared to being out on the sea.
Thanks for the invite on the walk 👍🏼 I really do fancy it but I’m planning to be out filming another video that weekend. Will see at the time, though. UTB!

I only went one time, in the late 70's, but it is an enduring memory, somehow there is still a little flicker of the adventure inside me. I don't recall a certificate, or actually finding a doubloon in the sand, but I was frantic to find one. I'm surprised how small the island looks. Though my 7 year old memory might be quite inaccurate, in my head it was a vast expanse of golden sand!!!! If I recall rightly, adults weren't allowed, it added to the adventure!

Loved it - do look forward to your vlogs. What a pity the council didn’t keep the “ treasure island” up to date. Even with all the technology children have today, they still love something real adventures like digging for treasure etc. Thanks once again for sharing this adventure and old footage.

Thanks Jill! I’m sure it would be successful again if they brought it back - even for just a few months of the year. 🏴‍☠️

I remember the Hispaniola on the Mere in the late 50's or early 60's. I found a metal doubloon (I think they were plastic later on?) unfortunately I don't still have it but my memory was that it had uneven edges but I may be wrong.I don't remember the certificate but I'm sure they had a 'bucket of blood' on board ☠️ I think about it every time I visit Scarborough & was thrilled when I first realised that the ship sailing the South Bay was the very same one. Thanks for the memories.

Fantastic memories, thank you, I went on The Hispaniola back in the 70s and I’m sure Ben Gunn was on the Island scaring us whilst we hunted for treasure, and didn’t there used to be a couple of water ski ramps on The Mere back then?

Loved The Goonies feel to this video right down to your 'Truffle Shuffle' t shirt! Lol. Remember finding a douboon back in the 70s but don't remember the certificates. The only place that equalled this for excitement for me was The tree walk, would like to know the history of that too as despite researching I can't find much at all.

A harr me ol’ ‘earties, I be cap’n Blackbeard a harr, oy remember being but a wee sprat when I be a traveler on the “igh seas sailing to the pirate stronghold to find th’ gold doubloons,a harr.
    🥸🤣🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
Yes, it has always stuck in my memory when on a holiday in Scarborough my mum and dad took myself and my twin sister for a trip to the pirate island on the pirate ship… back then, there were photographers who frequented the sea front with their camera in one hand, and a monkey in the other where they’d take your photo with the monkey in hand.
I still have the photo of us both… that was a long time ago now.
The other memory was of the ‘sea battles’ on a Loch in Scarborough where they had model ships and submarines and they would reenact a battle.
Keep up the good work, informative and entertaining too… a harr!

Yet another crime against enjoyment and the town by Scarborough council.
I walked round the mere a few months back and what a sad lonely place it is compared to how it used to be. I'll never understand the council's attitude to the town so I tend to avoid it, shame as I used to love it.
Excellent video as always, thanks for the brilliant memories.
